Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of a community-based sex and reproductive health education and services program on unmarried youth's sexual behavior. Methods Two towns in sub-urban Shanghai were selected as the study sites. The intervention lasted 20 months and comprised 3 main areas of activities, i. e. building awareness, offering counseling and contraceptive services. The longer-term effectiveness of the program was evaluated by comparing the results from the follow-up survey conducted 28 months after the completion of the intervention with those from the baseline and post-intervention surveys. Results Among all respondents interviewed in the third survey, middle school students in the intervention group were less likely to have sexual behavior than those in the control group. However, the difference was no longer found after adjusting possible influence factors, indicating the intervention had no long-term effect on sexual behavior among all respondents. Among old respondents who had no sexual experience at baseline survey, middle school students in the intervention group were less likely to have sexual behavior than those in the control group at post-intervention survey. However, the differences of sexual behavior between the two groups among different types of subjects were not statistically significant at follow-up survey. After adjusting possible influence factors, the intervention still had no long-term effectiveness on sexual behavior among different types of old respondents. Among new respondents, subjects of different types in the intervention group were less likely to have sexual behavior than those in the control group. However, the differences were no longer found after adjusting possible influence factors. Conclusions Community-based sex and reproductive health education and services had no long-term effectiveness on sexual behavior among unmarried young people. The main reasons might be that sex education activities were weakened obviously in the intervention group, while similar education activities were implemented in the control group during the follow-up period, and there is a custom of cohabitation among engaged young people in the local society.
