Effect of School-Based Sex Education Involving Parent-Child Communication on High School Students' Attitudes to Premarital Sex

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the feasibility of school-based sex education involving parent-child communication,and its effect on adolescents' attitude to premarital sex.Methods:A 2-year intervention study was conducted among high school students and their parents in 4 high schools in Shanghai.Two intervention models adopted were sex education for students as well as sex education for both parents and students.The impact of the interventions was evaluated by comparing the results of questionnaire survey before and after intervention.Results:The combined sex education for both students and parents effectively promoted parent-adolescent communication on sexual issues,especially on issues of relationship with opposite sex.After intervention,lower proportion of students who received combined sex education disapproved premarital sex.Multiple analysesalso displayed comparing with sex education only for students,combined sex education made high school student attitudes toward premarital sex more conservative.Conclusion:School-based adolescent sex education involving parents is feasible and can help adolescents to formulate right sexual perspectives.
