Abstract:Thin films or sheets subjected to external forces often undergo mechanical instability, leading to regular patterns of wrinkles, folds, and creases. As can be anticipated from the difficulty of flattening a curved globe, any natural curvature of the sheet will have a strong influence on these instabilities. Here, we develop a non-invasive synthetic schlieren imaging technique to image and reconstruct the surface of wrinkling curved sheets, confined to float on water. Our method circumvents the small-amplitude limit of related imaging techniques, and we demonstrate robust means to estimate the reconstruction accuracy. We then evaluate how the sign and magnitude of Gaussian curvature affects the wrinkling of thin curved sheets, and compare observations of the wrinkle wavelength, amplitude and domain structure with recent theoretical predictions. While generally validating model predictions, we find that the assumption of a conserved surface area during wrinkling should be treated with some care. The control of wrinkling behavior demonstrated here can have application in design of liquid lenses, microfluidics, active textured surfaces, and flexible electronic components.

Abstract:The moire method is typically applied to the measurement of deformations of a flat surface while, for a curved surface, this method is rarely used other than for projection moire or moire interferometry. Here, a novel colour charge-coupled device (CCD) micro-moire method has been developed, based on which a curved surface micro-moire (CSMM) method is proposed with a colour CCD and optical microscope (OM). In the CSMM method, no additional reference grating is needed as a Bayer colour filter array (CFA) installed on the OM in front of the colour CCD image sensor performs this role. Micro-moire fringes with high contrast are directly observed with the OM through the Bayer CFA under the special condition of observing a curved specimen grating. The principle of the CSMM method based on a colour CCD micro-moire method and its application range and error analysis are all described in detail. In an experiment, the curved surface residual stress near a welded seam on a stainless steel tube was investigated using the CSMM method.

Abstract:As representative non-contact optical techniques, Moiré methods have been extensively used to visualize deformation distributions of materials, arrangements of structures, and shape features of objects in research and industrial fields. This article overviews the up-to-date developments of Moiré techniques and applications to in-plane and out-of-plane deformation measurement, planar structure characterization and three-dimensional shape analysis based on recently published patents. The planar periodic structure parameters, alignment accuracies, overlay errors, defects as well as distortions, and document security are able to be accurately detected. The heights or depths, three-dimensional shapes, three-dimensional surface profiles or topographies, and surface flatness are also effectively obtainable. The phase-shifting technique and the color technique have been used to improve the measurement accuracy. Further developments of Moiré techniques are promoted by the demands of high-accuracy, extremely small- or large-scale, multi-scale, dynamic, high-temperature, three-dimensional, and on-line measurements. Abstract:An approach for moire deflectometry based on Fourier-transform analysis is described. Fourier-transform is used for analyzing and evaluating both infinite and finite moire deflectograms. Deflections in two orthogonal directions are integrated to reconstruct the tested surface. A least square fitting is used in finite moire deflectogram to eliminate declination error caused by inclination between two Ronchi grating lines. Results from experiments of aspheric surface measurement based on this approach have proved its effectiveness.
Study on the replicating technique of high-frequency phase-style deformed gratings from a curved surface

Abstract:A study on the deformed gratings replicating technology from a curved surface at room temperature or 85��C was carried out here, in which, the double deposited metal-film phase style holographic gratings of high frequency (1200 1/mm) was used. The experimental results show that high-quality copies of the curved-surface deformed holographic gratings can be obtained by using this method, which has the advantages of high sensitivity, high quality in its fringes, and ease in operation in situ. This study provides a new method for the moire interferometry technique in the measurement of deformation of curved surface even under the condition of high temperature.

Abstract:A novel digital nano-moire method is proposed to measure the in-plane nanoscopic deformation of an object. In the measurement, the periodic lattice of a single-crystal material acts as a specimen grating while a digital reference grating (DRG) is prepared by computer software. These two gratings overlap to generate a moire fringe pattern. The preparation of the grating, the formation principle of digital nano-moire fringes and its relative phase shifting technique are described in detail. A typical experiment was conducted with a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) sample. The residual deformation of the irradiated HOPG sample was measured using this method. The experiment result verifies the feasibility of this method, and demonstrates the potential for further applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the wave propagation in a finitely pre-deformed elastic half-space overlain by a thin coating layer (or surface film) is considered. The coated half-space is subjected to a particular uniform pre-deformation such that it is kept to be tractions-free on its surface. The first-order effective boundary conditions are introduced to approximate the effect of the overlying surface film. Then the Stroh formalism and Barnett-Lothe theory are adopted to study the surface wave characteristics. In particular, general criteria are established to identify the existence of surface waves of different modes by taking advantage of the surface impedance matrix. As an illustration, surface waves in a coated soft half-space under biasing field are investigated. Both the surface film and the half-space are modeled by the Hadamard strain energy function for soft isotropic materials. Explicit conditions for the existence of different surface wave modes (including the first-order Rayleigh waves, second-order Rayleigh waves and Love waves) are obtained, and the corresponding wavenumber ranges are also determined. Our theoretical analysis and numerical simulations show that both the surface film and the pre-deformation could remarkably affect the propagation of surface waves as well as the stability of the coated elastic half-space. Particularly, it is proved that, distinguishing from Rayleigh waves, the velocity of Love waves varies linearly with pre-stretch for a given frequency, a striking feature which is highly desirable in the sensor designs.

Abstract:Two novel micro/nano moire method, SEM scanning moire and AFM scanning moire techniques are discussed in this paper. The principle and applications of two scanning moire methods are described in detail. The residual deformation in a polysilicon MEMS cantilever structure with a 5000 lines/mm grating after removing the SiO2 sacrificial layer is accurately measured by SEM scanning moire method. While AFM scanning moire method is used to detect thermal deformation of electronic package components, and formation of nano-moire on a freshly cleaved mica crystal. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of these two moire methods, and also show they are effective methods to measure the deformation from micron to nano-scales.
Curvature Induced Hierarchical Wrinkling Patterns in Soft Bilayers

Abstract:Sinusoidal wrinkling will occur in a planar film-substrate bilayer when the uniaxial compressive strain imposed to the system exceeds a critical value. However, when a core-shell soft cylinder is subjected to axial compression, surface wrinkling patterns may evolve from the sinusoidal mode to the diamond-like mode, depending on the modular ratio and the curvature of the system. Inspired by this phenomenon, we here propose a simple yet robust strategy to fabricate hierarchical wrinkling patterns by controlling the curvature of a film-substrate system. To quantitatively understand the experimental results, a three-dimensional finite element model has been built to track the wrinkling pattern evolution. Furthermore, a phase diagram is provided based on the theoretical analysis and finite element simulations, which may guide the experimental design. In addition, the wetting properties of the surface with hierarchical micropatterns fabricated using the proposed method are investigated. The results show that the hierarchical surface wrinkles lead to anisotropic wetting behavior, which can be tuned by controlling the imposed compressive strain. The tunable anisotropic wetting surface fabricated here may find a broad range of applications such as in the development of sensors, fluidic devices, micro-reactors and biomedical devices.

Abstract:In this study, the atomic force microscope( AFM) scanning moire method is developed. The scanning lines in the AFM monitor are used as the reference grating. The reference grating interferes with the specimen grating, and forms a moire pattern on the monitor. The formation mechanism of AFM moire, the deformation measurement principle using this method are described in detail. The AFM scanning moire method is used to measure the residual deformation of mica substrate after being damaged by the YAG laser, and the thermal deformation in a QFP type electronic package. The experiment results verify the feasibility of AFM scanning moire method and show its ability to measure the in-plane deformation in both micro-and nano-scales.

Abstract:In the analysis of origami structures, the deformation of shells usually couples with the rotation of creases, which leads to the difficulty of solving high-order differential equations. In this study, first the deformation of creased shell is solved analytically. Then, an approximation method named virtual crease method (VCM) is employed, where virtual creases are used to approximate the deformation of shells, and then a complex structure can be simplified into rigid shells connected by real and virtual creases. Then, VCM is used to analyze the large deflection of shells as well as the bistable states of origami structures, such as single creased shell and cell of Miura-Ori. Compared with experiment results, the deformed states given by VCM are quite accurate. Therefore, this generalized method may have potential applications in the analysis of origami structures.

Abstract:In this paper, laser moiré interferometry method, electron beam moiré method,proposed to measure deformation in micro-meter scale. The measurement principle and the adaptability of these methods are discussed and compared. 1200 lines/mm holographic gratings in ultra low expansion (ULE) mold plate were replicated onto the cross section of the measured sections in a ball grid array (BGA) electronic package and a quad flat package (QFP). These holographic gratings were fabricated on ULE mold plates and were replicated onto measured was obtained on a MEMS structure, and this result demonstrates the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Spiral surface patterns endow materials with unique properties and functions. Surface wrinkling in a system consisting of a thin film on a compliant substrate subjected to surface torsion is explored. We find that each spiral wrinkle has the shape of an Archimedean spiral curve. A scaling law is derived to characterize the correlation between the wavenumber and the properties of the system. Both experiments and numerical simulations are performed to validate the scaling relation. Our results foresee the feasibility of fabricating spiral patterns by wrinkling-based techniques and have potential applications in the measurement of local mechanical properties of inhomogeneous soft materials.

Abstract:Periodic delamination patterns in multilayer structures have exhibited extensive applications in microelectronics and optics devices. However, delamination behaviors of a closed thin shell on spherical substrates are still elusive. Herein, a unique instability mechanism of buckle delamination in a closed thin film weakly bonded to spherical substrates is studied by experiments, simulations, and theoretical analyses. The system of an Al film depositing on polystyrene spheres subjected to thermal mismatch strain is used for demonstration. Unlike traditional phenomena of wrinkling and wrinkle-induced delamination under increasing misfit strain, the weak adhesion between the core and shell results in a periodic pattern of delaminated hexagonal dimples that emerges directly from the smooth sphere configuration, before which no wrinkling occurs. Both substrate curvature and interfacial adhesion are revealed to control the dimple size and delamination width. These findings open a new venue for manifesting new controllable features for surface microfabrication.

Abstract:A basic characteristic of stiff film/soft substrate systems is their ability to experience large deformation under compressive stresses, which inevitably leads to formation of patterns on the surface. Such pattern formation is the result of loss of stability and symmetry breaking. Knowledge on how such instabilities arise and evolve is essential to describe, understand, predict, and ultimately to design complex functional materials and structures, for example the fabrication of stretchable electronic devices and micro/nano-scale surface patterning control. In this paper, quantitative predictions of various instability pattern formations and evolutions, which involve highly nonlinear deformation and multiple bifurcations, will be presented based on advanced mechanical models and methods, from planar to curved geometry. The results can provide further insight into fundamental understanding in a whole view of a variety of surface patterning morphology and imply a potential way to facilitate the design of functional materials and structures by quantitatively harnessing surface instabilities.

Abstract:Moire interferometry combined with hole-drilling is an effective method for measuring welding residual deformation. In this study, two lap-welded rectangular steel plates with different overlap widths were manufactured, and cross-gratings with a frequency of 1200 lines per mm were replicated on test areas of the welds. Sixteen through holes were drilled in the plates to release residual stress, while Moire interferometry, integrated with a phase-shifting technique, was used to determine the corresponding surface residual deformation. The distribution characteristics of the residual displacements around the drilled holes were investigated using the experimental data as basis. The relationship between the residual displacement located in the plates and the distance to the weld lines is also presented in this paper. Furthermore, the magnitude and direction of the residual strain both near the holes and within the plates were analysed. The experimental data and detailed analysis in this paper can serve as some reference for research on the residual strain of welds.

Abstract:The dynamic deformations of impulsed viscoelastic plates measured with the moire method are discussed. A new method for producing visco-photoelastic material is proposed. The material was processed as plate type specimens with elliptical or circular holes, and utilized to investigate its dynamic deformation behavior at 42°C. The measuring method and procedures, as well as the experimental results are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Functional design and morphomechanics via wrinkles have received extensive attention due to its increasing applications in different fields such as smart materials, flexible electronics, and biomedical engineering. Here through a combination of experiments and nonlinear simulations, we demonstrate controllable spatially dependent wrinkling pattern of hard films on pre-curved soft substrates can be realized by tuning curvature and pre-stretch. We stamp an initially flat sheet onto a curved mold to obtain the pre-curved soft substrate, and a metal film deposited onto the substrate forms wrinkles after flattening the curved bilayer via subsequent removal of it from the mold. Various spatially distributed wrinkling patterns such as checkerboard, bead-chain, herringbone, radially or circumferentially oriented stripes are observed through numerical simulations, in good agreement with experimental observations. Such approach provides a strategy for tunable wrinkling patterns of a film by releasing the pre-bending of its underlying substrate.
