Abstract:A simple and efficient procedure is presented for Aza-Michael additions of various amines with conjugate alkenes bearing electron withdrawing group catalyzed by polystyrene-supported aluminum chloride (Ps-AlCl3) without the use of any solvents. The catalyst shows high catalytic activity for both aromatic amines and aliphatic amines. Chemoselective additions of the two types of amines with conjugate alkenes are achieved. Regioselective additions of two different amino groups in one molecule proceed smoothly. Ps-AlCl3 has better recyclability and can be reused several times without apparent loss of activity.
Chemical Modification on Top of Nanotopography to Enhance Surface Properties of PDMS

Abstract:In the present study we report the surface modification of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via combining both physical and chemical modification routes. Well defined nanostructures were created on PDMS surface through anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template method. On top of the nanostructures, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was coated after the nano patterned PDMS was exposed to air plasma. The influence of the combined modification on surface properties of PDMS was examined by ATR-FTIR and water contact angle measurement. The impact of plasma pretreatment time and storage time in ambient environment were investigated, and property of films with or without nanostructures was compared. Experimental results show that long-term stable hydrophilic surfaces of PDMS can be achieved by PVA coating and be further improved by the surface nanostructures. The modified PDMS was also used for cell culture. The results indicate that both nanostructuring and chemically modifying the PDMS surface improves cell growth. Additionally, combination of these surface modifications has an additive effect on cell proliferation.

Abstract:A general procedure for surface modification of nano-alumina using N, N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) mediated amidation is reported. Aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids reacted smoothly with nano-alumina pretreated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in the presence of DCC, giving modified aluminas having organic surfaces. The grafted aluminas have been characterized qualitatively by FT-IR or 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy, and quantitatively by thermogravimetric analysis and elemental analysis. The procedure was applied to polyether dendrons bearing carboxyl groups at the focal points, giving successful grafting of dendrimers onto nano-alumina.

Abstract:Solid state reduction reaction of ZnO and Al powder mixtures induced by mechanical alloying has been investigated. It is revealed that the reduction product consists of crystalline zinc and amorphous alumina particles with nanometer sizes of 10–50 nm. The zincite is found to be reduced by Al through a diffusion-controlled mechanism, rather than a rapid self-sustaining combustion reaction process. This is attributed to the fact that the calculated theoretical adiabatic temperature for the reaction is far below the critical one to trigger the mechanical alloying induced combustion when evaporation of zinc is taken into consideration. The amorphous structure of the produced alumina, which consumes excess enthalpy released during the reaction, further lowered the theoretical adiabatic temperature. The gradually proceeding redox reaction sustains a relatively low temperature environment, which favors the formation of the amorphous alumina.

Abstract:A simple co precipitation method was adopted to synthesize nanometer gamma-Al2O3 and then surface modification was implemented by coupling agent KH-550. The structure and morphology of the modified and unmodified gamma-Al2O3 were characterized by XRD, IR and TEM. The results show that the particles were 30 nm rod shape and homodisperse. The lipophilic groups were endowed onto the surface of modified gamma-Al203.

Abstract:Surface organic molecule modification of nanosized alumina particles is an effective way to improve its dispersion in polymer and to enhance the properties of polymer nanocomposites. In the present study,gamma-aminopropyl triethoxysilane was used as a surface modification agent to react with the hydroxyl group on the surface of nanosized alumina. The properties of the modified alumina particles were characterized by FT-IR spectra, particle-size analyzer and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The nanocomposites of the epoxy resin filled with nano-sized alumina before and after surface modification were fabricated by physical blending. The mechanical behaviour and heat resistant properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the effective chemical bonds were formed between nano-alumina particles and gamma-aminopropyl triethoxysilane after modification. Compared to the non-modified particles, the modified alumina nanoparticles exhibited a good dispersibility, and distributed uniformly in the epoxy matrix. The epoxy matrix filled with the modified nanoparticles showed a shorter gel time and a higher curing degree. The composites filled with modified nano-alumina revealed the optimum improvement of heat resistance. The composites with 3 wt% weight fraction modified particles had higher thermal decomposing temperature and glass transition temperature, and they were raised by 11 and 10 degrees C relative to that of the neat resin, respectively. The modified alumina nanoparticles had better enhancement effect on epoxy matrix. The ultimate flexural strength and flexural modulus of the composites with 3 wt% modified particles increased by 55 and 77.1%, respectively; the impact strength of the composites containing 5 wt% modified particles increased by 24.7% relative to the neat resin, and the impact fracture surface presented ductile fracture features. Abstract:This paper focuses on the preparation and modification of zeolite Y by different methods. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, nitrogen adsorption–desorption and zeta potential measurements. The obtained catalysts were tested in the Michael addition reaction. Several parameters affecting the Michael reaction such as the catalyst nature, catalyst mass, solvent and to generalize the reaction several acceptors were tested. The results showed that zeolite Y has a larger specific surface area, but their modified counterparts showed weak surfaces due to the partial destruction of zeolite framework after the different treatments. The catalytic application of zeolite Y and its modified counterparts have shown interesting results via the addition of Michael with yields between 70 and 100%. Reuse of zeolite Y in several cycles showed that this catalyst was stable during six consecutive reuse tests.

Abstract:A wet chemical method was adopted to introduce alumina sol to surface-modification of alumina bubble and in-situ decomposition characteristics, distribution of alumina sol, microstructure and mechanical properties of surface-modified alumina bubble were studied by SEM, XRD, Coulter LS Particle Size Analyzer and self-preparation experimental device for measurement of compressive resistance. The results showed that the alumina sol formed film on the surface, filtered into and distributed on the pore and crack of alumina bubble. After heat-treatment at 500similar to900degreesC, the alumina sol can in-situ decompose to high active gamma-Al2O3 powder, compressive resistance of surface-modified alumina bubble was heightened from 15.6N to 30.2N after sintering at 1550degreesC.

Abstract:Chemical functionalization of ZnO surface with an alkyne functional group was successfully achieved by exposing ZnO nanopowder to gas-phase propiolic acid in vacuum, which left the alkyne group available for subsequent chemical modification via the azide-alkyne cycloaddition "click" reaction with benzyl azide. The highly selective formation of a bidentate carboxylate linkage and the reaction of benzyl azide were confirmed by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Most importantly, scanning electron microscopy revealed that the surface morphology was perfectly preserved by this gas-phase modification, as opposed to the alternative protocols based on liquid phase processing. This simple and precise design can serve as a universal method for the modular functionalization of zinc oxide surface following the initial surface preparation and be further applied to thin films, nanostructures, and powders, where preserving surface morphology during chemical modification is especially important.

Abstract:Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) is an electrochemical approach for the surface treatment usually applied on so called valve metals such as Al, Mg and Ti. MAO is usually carried out an aqueous electrolyte, which involves a bath cooling and leads to the creation of surface contained components originated in the electrolyte. In current work, we applied a different approach of ceramic surface formation on Ti alloy used in biomedical applications. Here, MAO process conducted in molten nitrate salt at 280 deg C. The developed surface morphology, chemical and phase composition, and corrosion resistance were investigated and described in the work.

Abstract:Shape-controlled nanocrystals, such as nanoflowers, are expected to serve as innovative nanocatalysts with high catalytic activity. It is well-established that these nanocrystals can be readily synthesized with specific shapes using colloidal methods in solutions containing capping agents. However, these capping agents tend to reduce the catalytic activity of nanocatalysts. Therefore, it is imperative to remove these agents without altering the morphology to enhance catalytic efficiency. In this study, we developed a method for eliminating melamine, a common capping agent, from supported Au nanoflowers using water extraction and ultraviolet-ozone treatment. This process significantly enhances the catalytic performance, particularly for alcohol oxidation reactions such as the conversion of 1-phenylethyl alcohol to acetophenone.
Improved ignition and combustion performances of aluminum nanoparticles by in-situ partial conversion of native alumina to surface Al-MOF shell

Abstract:Although aluminum nanoparticles (n-Al) as the promising metal fuel have attracted much attention, it still remains great challenge to efficiently extract chemical energy from n-Al. The energetic performance of n-Al is limited by native alumina layer, which slows down mass/heat transport, hinders sufficient ignition/combustion. In this study, we report the in-situ partial conversion of native alumina to surface Al-MOF shell (MIL-53(Al)), the resulted n-Al@Al-MOF has been confirmed by TEM, XRD and XPS. The effects of treatment conditions on the thermochemical reactivity, ignition/combustion of n-Al@Al-MOF and comparison samples have been investigated by TGA-DSC-MS, CO 2 laser ignition, and constant volume combustion experiments. Tuning organic linker (terephthalic acid, H 2 BDC) amount and treatment time, the onset temperatures of n-Al@Al-MOF oxidation in air are lowered by about 18.0–38.0 °C than that of pristine n-Al (529.2 °C). Moreover, n-Al@Al-MOF with suitable content of surface Al-MOF shell exhibits remarkably improved ignition and combustion performances in comparison with n-Al, representing a shorter ignition delay time (t ig ), higher peak pressure (P max ) and higher pressurization rate ( e.g. 4 ms, 638.2 kPa, 3088.6 kPa/ms for n-Al@Al-MOF vs. 20 ms, 106.3 kPa, 349.8 kPa/ms for n-Al). Importantly, violent deflagration even occurs for n-Al@Al-MOF modified with appropriate surface Al-MOF shell. However, shortened t ig , enhanced pressurization rate and deflagration behavior have not been observed by physical mixtures of n-Al with MIL-53 (or H 2 BDC). The surface Al-MOF shell should decompose as CO 2 gases to form voids, playing unique roles in facilitating mass/heat transfer and improving ignition/combustion. In addition, n-Al@Al-MOF exhibits a decreased combustion heat but a good stability in air. This work provides a facile, mild and effective route to enhance the ignition and combustion performances of metal fuels.

Abstract:The sodium laurate was used to modificate the nanometer CeO2 which was prepared in this work.At first all the effect factors were investigated respectively and each optimum range of factors was obtained.Because of cross action between the four factors,the orthogonal tests were done in order to obtain the optimum condition of modification.The modifier concentration was 2.1 g/L,the modification temperature was 45 ℃,the modification pH was 6 and modification time was 18 min.The lipophilicity of the nanometer CeO2 which was modified under optimum condition was 0.48.The powders were well dispersed in alcohol.

Abstract:Due to its high reactivity, the nano aluminum particle (n-Al) has attracted more attention in energetic materials but is easily oxidized during processing. In order to realize sewage sludge (SS) resource and n-Al coating, the organic matter was extracted from SS, using the deep eutectic solvent method due to its strong dissolving capacity, and then the organic matter was pretreated by ball milling, which was used as an interfacial layer between n-Al and fluoride. It was found that organic matter was successfully extracted from SS. The main organic matter is proteins. The ball milling method can effectively destroy the secondary structure of proteins to release more active functional groups. During the pretreatment, the Maillard reaction broke the proteins structure to form more active low molecular weight compounds. It was confirmed that n-Al can be coated by PBSP under mild conditions to form a uniform core-shell structure. PFOA can effectively coat the n-Al@PBSP to form n-Al@PBSP/PFOA, which can enhance the combustion of n-Al. The gas phase flame temperature can notably improve to 2892 K. The reaction mechanism between n-Al and coating was analyzed. The results could help SS treatment and provide new insights for n-Al coating and SS-based organic matter recovery and utilization.

Abstract:Nano-SiC particles were coated with AI(OH)(3) by heterogeneous nucleation process with the buffer pH using as precipitation reagent. The thickness of coating layer was controlled by controlling at of AI(OH)3 and was the by TEM observation. The electrophoretical property of nano-SiC particles coated with alumina precursor was different from that of uncoated nano-SiC particles and showed like that of alumina powders, and the dispersity of coated nano-SiC aqueous suspensions was improved greatly. In addition, the oxidation resistance of nano-SiC particles was increased largely below 1000 degreesC.
