Abstract:The performance of the Monolithic Polycapillary X-ray Lens(MPXRL)for application in the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure(EXAFS)technique is reported,especially,the main characters of the MPXRL such as gain in flux density,stabilizing effect,and high energy filtering.Experimental results show that the spatial resolution of the EXAFS facility based on the MPXRL is about 25 μm,and the gain in flux density of the Monolithic Polycapillary Focusing X-ray Lens(MPFXRL)is about 3 000 when the MPFXRL is used to focus the laser plasma pulsed X-ray for ultrafast time-resolved EXAFS experiments.These indicate that the MPXRL is helpful in the improvement of the EXAFS facilities.

Abstract:X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) is an emerging imaging modality for industrial inspections and biomedical applications. A polycapillary semilens is utilized in the grating-based XPCI to reduce the imaging time or improve the image quality of the reconstructed images in this work. The proposed system is proved to be effective for improving the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the reconstructed images compared with using an aperture diaphragm in the system under the same exposure time. The polycapillary semilens concentrates the X-rays on the region of interest (ROI) of the sample, which reduces the unnecessary radiation in other areas.

Abstract:A monolithic capillary half focusing X-ray lens (MCHFXRL) is used to focus the synchrotron radiation. The magnitudes of the focal spot size and gain of the synchrotron radiation microbeam focused by the MCHFXRL are in the orders of 10 mu m and 10(3), respectively. In the energy range from 5.5 to 11.5keV, the focal spot size varies from 88 to 29 mu m; the transmission efficiency varies from 26.1% to 20.5%; the translation of the vertical position of the focal spot is 3 mu m; the change of the output focal distance is 155 mu m. On the basis of the investigation of the performances of the MCHFXRL, the application of the synchrotron radiation microbeam in micro-extended-X-ray-absorption-fine-structure (micro-EXAFS) analysis is studied.

Abstract:Photon correlation spectroscopy probing fluctuations in scattered or fluorescent intensity to study particle dynamics in fluids is by now well established in the visible light regime. With the advent of high-brilliance synchrotron radiation sources, correlation spectroscopy utilizing scattered radiation has recently been extended to the x-ray wavelength regime by using spatially coherent x-rays to study the time fluctuations of the corresponding speckle patterns. In this presentation, we report the development of a new technique, x-ray fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (XFCS) for elucidating the dynamics of particles. This technique does not require coherent beams but relies on intense microfocused x-ray beams. Further, it is element specific. As a demonstration of this method, the dynamics of gold colloidal particles and aggregates undergoing diffusion and sedimentation in water was studied by measuring the time autocorrelation of the gold fluorescence intensity from a small illuminated volume. The values of the translational diffusion constants and sedimentation velocities obtained are in excellent agreement with theoretical estimates and other measurements. Further potential applications of the technique are discussed.

Abstract:A new confocal three-dimensional micro X-ray fluorescence (3D micro-XRF) facility based on polycapillary X-ray optics in the detection channel and Kirkpatrick- Baez (KB) mirrors in the excitation channel is designed. The lateral resolution (l(x), l(y)) of this confocal three-dimensional micro-X-ray fluorescence facility is 76.3(1(x)) and 53.4(l(y)) mu m respectively, and its depth resolution d(z) is 77.1 mu m at theta = 90 degrees. Abstract:A new glancing incident X-ray fluorescence (GIXRF) spectrometer using parallel polycapillary X-ray lens has been developed. Integrated with a Zr filter and slits, a highly collimated and monochromatic X-ray beam has been achieved. This method eliminated the monochromator used in the conventional GIXRF method. Moreover the parallel X-ray lens increased the acceptance solid angle and hence increases intensities of the excitation spectrum. In this paper, this method has been applied in analysis of single crystal and film sample.

Abstract:X-ray optics with good focusing ability and high spectral resolution are required in X-ray spectroscopy for the diagnosis of high temperature and density plasmas. In our study, a novel X-ray spectrometer is developed to provide the ability to record spectra with excellent focusing performance and high energy resolution. It is accomplished by using a continuously conical crystal (CCC) that is formed by circles with different curvatures. In this paper, we present the foundational work of the design and development of continuously conical crystal spectrometer (CCCS) along with initial results obtained with a titanium (Ti) target as the object source. First, the spectrometer based on such a continuously conical crystal is used to measure X-ray spectra on Ti target X-ray Tube device. The spectral resolution (λ/Δλ) is around 615 with the source size of 1 mm. Then, we test the capability of the spectrometer on Xingguang-III Laser Facility with Ti target. He-like and Li-like Ti lines are recorded based on which the spectrometer performance is evaluated. The experiment result shows that the spectrometer provides a high spectral resolving power up to 1000, while acquiring a one-dimensional image of the source.

Abstract:A confocal fluorescence endstation for depth-resolved micro-X-ray absorption spectroscopy is described. A polycapillary half-lens defines the incident beam path and a second polycapillary half-lens at 90° defines the probe sample volume. An automatic alignment program based on an evolutionary algorithm is employed to make the alignment procedure efficient. This depth-resolved system was examined on a general X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) beamline at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Sacrificial red glaze (AD 1368-1644) china was studied to show the capability of the instrument. As a mobile endstation to be applied on multiple beamlines, the confocal system can improve the function and flexibility of general XAS beamlines, and extend their capabilities to a wider user community.

Abstract:X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) is an important tool for materials information of atoms with bond length, coordination numbers and electronic state. Most of the related research has been performed at the synchrotron radiation facility for past decades. The development of conventional X-ray source and bent crystal analyzer makes it possible to conduct XAFS experiment in the laboratory. We developed a laboratory X-ray absorption spectrometer. It includes an conventional X-ray source, a Johann-type spherically bent crystal analyzer, precision Rowland circle scanning mechanism, and a silicon drift detector. The spectrometer is designed for both the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. The spectrometer covers the photon energy range of 8.9 - 9.6 keV and the energy resolution is about 1.2 - 3.5 eV with W anode source (spot size 0.4 mm) and Ge(800) crystal. The absorption spectrum of a copper foil with thickness of 10 mu m is measured. The result is similar to that conducted at the synchrotron radiation facility.

Abstract:The Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT) is one of the main payloads on board the Einstein probe satellite. In order to obtain data with high signal-to-noise ratio and realize high-precision positioning of the sources, FXT adopts Wolter-I X-ray focusing optical system which has been wildly used in X-ray astronomy. According to the principle of Wolter-I, combined with the actual manufacture characteristics, several key parameters affecting the optical quality, such as surface roughness Root-Mean Square (RMS) and surface profile error, are simulated by Monte Carlo simulation algorithm. The effect of each parameter is analyzed according to the simulation results. Then, the simulation method is verified by the test results of the focusing mirrors provided by PANTER laboratory, and the surface profile error parameters are restricted. The simulation results of the Half Energy Width (HEW) of the Structural-Thermal Module mirrors are basically consistent with the test results. This method can be effectively applied to later study of focusing mirrors manufacture and to accumulate experience for test and calibration work of FXT focusing mirrors. Furthermore, combined with the tested calibration data, some key performance of the mirrors such as the effective area, vignetting and the point spread function which can compose the on-orbit calibration database can be obtained by this simulation method.

Optimization of polycapillary lens for neutron focusing

Abstract:Using various neutron focusing techniques to obtain the focal spot with small size and high gain at the sample location is highly desired in micro-area analysis. Our previous work fully demonstrated the feasibility of polycapillary lenses in the field of neutron focusing; however, the focusing performance of the lens fell short of expectations. This study attempts to optimize the lens by adjusting the design parameters of the lens in order to achieve better focusing performance and higher gain. In addition, microscopic observations revealed that the previously developed lens has some defects in its microstructure, which are not conducive to neutron transmission. In this paper, a manual sorting process was added to the lens manufacturing process to obtain a lens with improved microstructure. The focusing performance of the optimized lens was tested using quasi-parallel neutron beams from China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the optimization strategies, which has a significant guiding property on the development of lenses.

Abstract:Ultrafast time resolved x-ray absorption and x-ray diffraction have made it possible to measure, in real time, transient phenomena structures and processes induced by optical femtosecond pulses. To illustrate the power of these experimental methods, we present several representative examples from the literature. (I) Time resolved measurements of photon/electron coupling, electron/phonon interaction, pressure wave formation, melting and recrystallization by means of time resolved x-ray diffraction. (II) Ultrafast x-ray absorption, EXAFS, for the direct measurement of the structures and their kinetics, evolved during electron transfer within molecules in liquid phase. (III) XANES experiments that measure directly pathway for the population of high spin states and the study of the operating mechanism of dye activated TiO2 solar cell devices. Abstract:We have developed a high-throughput x-ray characterization system, which can rapidly screen structure, composition and x-ray scintillation of combinatorial materials libraries using energy-dispersive x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, and x-ray photoluminescence. This system consists of an x-ray source, a polycapillary x-ray lens, one or two x-ray energy detectors, and a fiber optic spectrometer. A Windows-based software package was also developed to control the measurement system and data acquisition automatically. Examples are also demonstrated to show the applicability of this system. Abstract:Obtaining sub-10 pm spatial resolution by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy is required in many important fields of research, such as lattice distortion studies in colossal magnetic resistance materials, high-temperature superconductivity materials etc. However, based on the existing EXAFS data analysis methods, EXAFS has a spatial resolution limit of pi/2 Delta k which is larger than 0.1 angstrom. In this paper a new data analysis method which can easily achieve sub-10 pm resolution is introduced. Theoretically, the resolution limit of the method is three times better than that normally available. The method is examined by numerical simulation and experimental data. As a demonstration, the LaFe1-xCrxO3 system (x = 0, 1/3, 2/3) is studied and the structural information of FeO6 octahedral distortion as a function of Cr doping is resolved directly from EXAFS, where a resolution better than 0.074 angstrom is achieved.

Abstract:A monolithic half focusing polycapillary X-ray lens (MHFPXRL) composed of 289,000 capillaries is used to produce a synchrotron radiation microbeam. The energy dependence of the output focal distance, focal spot size, transmission efficiency, vertical beam position, and gain in flux density of this microbeam is studied in detail. There is a slight change in the output focal distance of the MHFPXRL when the X-ray energies change.

Abstract:Spectroscopy focusing array (SFA) and polarimetry focusing array (PFA) are the two major payloads of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP). Nested Wolter-I X-ray mirror module is implemented in SFA and PFA to achieve a high effective area. When evaluating the properties of the mirror module, the alignment of the optical axis of the X-ray mirror module and a quasi-parallel X-ray beam is a prerequisite for ensuring accuracy of the results. To assist the alignment of the X-ray mirror module, an X-ray focal plane detector with one of the largest detection areas, is designed based on a back-illuminated scientific complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor transistor (sCMOS) sensor(GSENSE6060BSI; Gpixel Inc). Then the characteristics of readout noise, dark current, and split-pixel event properties of the detector are studied with the self-developed multi-target fluorescence X-ray source in a 100-m long X-ray test facility. The energy calibration is performed based on the single-pixel event, and the energy non-linearity of the detector is also observed. Finally, based on the optical model, the eXTP mirror module is simulated, and the alignment test of the Wolter-I X-ray mirror module designed for Einstein Probe/Follow-up X-ray Telescope via the “Burkert test” method is demonstrated.
High-speed X-ray Diffraction for Studying Irreversible Materials Structure Dynamics

Abstract:At the 32-ID beamline of the Advanced Photon Source, we recently developed the high-speed x-ray diffraction technique for studying highly dynamic materials behaviors. Different from conventional pumpprobe type of ultrafast diffraction techniques, our technique uses high-flux white or pink undulator x-ray beams, and diffraction movies of single material events are recorded by a high-speed multiframe detection system. In another word, each diffraction pattern is generated with single exposure without repeatedly pumping and probing the sample. By taking advantage of the time structure of the filling pattern in the storage ring, single x-ray pulse diffraction can achieve with an exposure time set by the natural width of the pulse (down to 100 ps) and a frame rate set by the bunch repetition frequency (up to 6.5 MHz). Therefore, our high-speed diffraction technique is particularly suitable for real-time probing those transient processes which are non-repeatable and/or irreversible, such as grain refinement or phase transformation induced by high-rate loading, rapid material reactions, laser additive manufacturing, etc. In this contribution, I will present the beamline instrument and software we developed, and also some scientific cases which well highlight the unique capabilities of our high-speed hard x-ray diffraction technique.
