Abstract:With the development of broadband service and the improvement of broadband technology,it seems that EPON becomes more and more important in the access network.And the design of burst-mode optical receiver is a key technology in EPON.A AC-coupled burst mode receiver is designed,and its performance is verified.It shows that such a receiver certifies EPON standard regulated by IEEE802.3ah.Moreover,it can recover the data at the first bit.

Abstract:We demonstrate a WDM-PON system with port agnostic tunable SFP+ transceiver modules. With low-frequency envelope-modulated message channel, error-free data transmission is achieved at 8.5 Gbps with a sensitivity better than -19 dBm.

Abstract:A 100Mb/s optical burst transceiver is designed and implemented in this paper. Spatial oversampling technology is adopted for optical burst data recovery. Burst transmitter is implemented through controlling driver circuit of laser device. The test results show that this scheme can implement correctly burst data's transmission and reception. It can also reduce preamble overhead in burst packet head and raise bandwidth utility through eliminating waiting time needed by phase lock and clock recovery.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel design of a burst-mode transceiver with local real-time intelligence for point-to-multipoint upstream transmission at 155.52 Mb/s. Using embedded intelligence for controlling laser drive parameters, and a trailer canceling technique at a receiver, excellent combined performance of high sensitivity (-37 dBm at BER 10-9), large optical power budget (36 dB), wide dynamic range (33 dB), and short run-in time (26 ns) was successfully demonstrated. It can connect up to 32 subscribers through a passive optical tree network using a burst TDMA scheme.

The design of two special chips for EPON is put forward. One is for OLT, and the other is for ONU. The designed chips achieve the main functions of transmission convergence of EPON. Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:In this paper, a new architecture of the networks based on the proposed optical CDMA based on PON (OCDMA-PON) is presented, the design of the Optical Line Terminator (OLT) and the Optical Network Unit (ONU) for the OCDMA-PON are studied. The performance of networks based on the OCDMA-PON is analyzed in detail. Its bit error rate (BER) performance, networks scalability and transmission performance of such a system are studied under consideration of the multiple user interference (MUI) and the difference noise contributions. As shown in the study, the number of ONU/ONT, the channel link length, the number of available codes and the optical component characteristics deeply impact both the scalability and the transmission performance of such a system. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is feasible and that the novel design can improve the scalability and transmission performance of the optical access networks.

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a cost-effective point-to-multipoint solution to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic demands in the future optical access network. Recently, time and frequency division multiplexing (TFDM) coherent PON have attracted increasing interest, due to its advantages of providing low latency access and flexible bandwidth allocation. One critical challenge for TFDM-PON system is the upstream burst-mode digital signal processing (DSP). DSP should converge fast in the specific time slot to ensure low latency for subcarrier allocation. The conventional subcarrier recognition and demultiplexing are realized in the frequency domain. The process of time-frequency conversion introduces extra computational complexity if the burst-mode DSP use time-domain algorithms. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a data-aided DSP scheme for burst-mode detection in coherent TFDM-PON. Subcarrier demultiplexing is implemented in the time domain by using coarse and fine filtering. Coarse and fine filtering are achieved by convolving the signal with finite impulse response (FIR) pulse-shaping filters. Least square (LS) algorithm is used for channel estimation achieving fast convergence. With a 79.36-ns training sequence, -37.5-dBm and -29-dBm sensitivities are achieved for QPSK and 16QAM signal-based 200G TFDM-PON with four subcarriers after 20-km fiber transmission.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a full-duplex integrated passive optical network (PON) and indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) system. For the PON part, an external cavity laser (ECL) and a directly modulated laser (DML) are used as optical sources for downlink and uplink, respectively. The OWC subsystem utilizes a visible light-emitting diode (LED) for downlink and an infrared LED (IR-LED) for uplink transmission. To enable high spectral efficiency (SE), high-speed transmission, and flexible multiple access with simplified optical network unit (ONU)-side digital signal processing (DSP), multilevel, multiband quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and hybrid 128/64/16 Nyquist single-carrier frequency domain equalization (N-SC-FDE) modulation are implemented in this paper. In terms of 62.5 MHz OWC N-SC-FDE signals, the system successfully delivered a further 140 cm indoor distance after transmitting over a span of 25 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) together with three subbands of 250 MHz PON signals. As a proof of concept, an integrated system of symmetrical full-duplex 5 Gb/s PON and 250 Mb/s OWC at each direction for three wired users and one wireless user is successfully achieved. The measured bit error ratios (BERs) for each user are all smaller than the 7% pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) limit of 3.8 x 10(-3), which shows the promising potential and feasibility of this proposal to extend multiple services from metro areas to suburban areas.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a single-fiber bi-directional burst-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to simultaneously improve upstream and downstream loss budget in time and wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (TWDM-PON). Instead of additional light sources for upstream gain clamping, the downstream signal acting as saturation signal effectively suppresses the upstream burst surge, which widens the input dynamic range of upstream burst signal. For potential reflections caused by the absence of optical isolators, experimental results have demonstrated the degradation of receiver sensitivity at bit-error rate of 1 × 10-3 is negligible with a reflection power up to -14 dBm, which proves the promising applications in PONs of the proposed single-fiber bi-directional burst-mode EDFA.

Abstract:Recently, mode division multiplexing (MDM) has been introduced into optical transmission systems and networks for capacity enhancement. In this letter, we propose a bidirectional passive optical network (PON) architecture based on MDM. The bidirectional optical distribution network (ODN) of the MDM-PON consists of few-mode fiber, passive mode multiplexer/demultiplexer and few-mode circulators (FMCS), all of which are characterized by low modal-crosstalk. Signals in different modes are able to be transmitted and received independently for both downstream and upstream transmission. We experimentally demonstrate the bidirectional MDM-PON transmission over 10-km 2-mode optical fiber. 10-Gb/s on-off-keying (OOK) signals can be independently transmitted and directly detected without coherent receiver and multi-input-multiple-output (MIMO) processing. Moreover, nonlinear transmission impairments are experimentally investigated.

Abstract:<p>Optical access networks have been evolving to meet the explosive growth of data traffic. It is foreseeable that the 100Gb/s/λ and beyond passive optical network (PON) will be required in future optical access networks. Coherent optical communication is a promising solution for the future beyond 100G PON. However, the traditional digital signal processing (DSP) for coherent optical communication is difficult to realize fast convergence due to blind and complex algorithms. In this paper, we design a specific preamble structure and propose a burst-mode DSP to achieve fast convergence for the coherent PON. For verifying the feasibility of the proposed scheme, point-to-multi-point (P2MP) coherent PON is experimentally built up based on digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM), which is a kind of frequency division multiple access. When the allocated frequency of the optical network unit is suddenly changed, the DSP should converge fast to ensure a low handoff latency. In P2MP coherent PON, the proposed specific preamble structure and burst-mode DSP jointly implement the fast convergence using a short preamble with only 416 symbols. The experimental results show that the 8-Gbaud/SC×8-SCs 400Gb/s-net-rate coherent PON in burst-mode detection achieves the receiver sensitivity of approximately −27dBm at the 20% soft-decision forward error correction limit and approximately 35.5dB optical power budget with an optical pre-amplifier.</p>

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel architecture for the SSB-ADM-based OFDM-PON system.Its downlink transmission is based on 10 Gbit/s SSB-based OFDM-4-QAM modulation,while the uplink transmission is based on 2.5 Gbit/s ASK modulation in the Time Division Multiple Access(TDMA) mode by using the other sideband retained in the downlink signals.This architecture can perfectly overcome the Rayleigh backscattering effect in the bidirectional transmission.When the backscattering effect is considered,the power penalty will be <0.8 dB for downlink signals and <1.8 dB for uplink signals.

Abstract:In this paper, a design of optical fiber transmission system of 4-port and 8-wavelength opticalburst switching network is described. A novel scheme of wavelength channels is mentioned, and it is fit for OBS network and reducing difficulty and cost of the network. Burst mode transmitter and receiver are designed for OBS. At 1.25 Gbps bit rate transporting packets, output optical power of transmitter is more than -2 dBm, input optical power of receiver is less than -23 dBm, dynamic range is more than 15 dB, burst synchronization is less than 6 μs, and guard band between packets is 6 μs.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Passive Optical Network based on Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA-PON) is presented. The design of the Optical Line Terminator (OLT) and the Optical Network Unit (ONU) for the OCDMA-PON are studied in detail. The proposed OCDMA-PON combines the advantages of PON and OCDMA technology and it can be applied to an optical access network with full services on demand, such as internet protocol, video on demand, tele-presence and high quality audio. Compared to other multiple access technologies, the proposed OCDMA-PON provides more ONU and assembly flexibly for PON. We analyze in detail the scalability and system transmission performance of such a network. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is feasible and that the novel design can improve the scalability and transmission performance of the optical access networks.

Abstract:We propose a symmetric 40-Gb/s aggregate rate time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) system with the capability of simultaneous downstream differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signal demodulation and upstream signal chirp management based on delay interferometer (DI). With the bi-pass characteristic of DI, we experimentally demonstrate the bidirectional transmission of signals at 10-Gb/s per wavelength, and achieve negligible power penalties after 50-km single mode fiber (SMF). For the uplink transmission with DI, a similar to 11-dB optical power budget improvement at a bit error ratio of 1e-3 is obtained and the extinction ratio (ER) of signal is also improved from 3.4 dB to 13.75 dB. Owing to this high ER, the upstream burst-mode transmitting is successfully presented in term of time-division multiplexing. Moreover, in our experiment, a similar to 38-dB power budget is obtained to support 256 users with 50-km SMF transmission. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America
