Abstract:Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of as-extruded alumina borate whisker (Al18B4O33)w reinforced pure aluminum composite in 3.5%NaCl solution was investigated using double cantilever beam (DCB) method. The effect of whisker orientation on the stress corrosion cracking behavior of the composite after extrusion was examined. The results indicated that the crack propagated easily along the interface between whisker and matrix in the composite. The whisker orientation plays an important role in stress corrosion cracking of the composite after extrusion.

Abstract:Sol–gel γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3 ceramic coatings were deposited onto surfaces of aluminum borate whiskers to control the spinel reactions between whiskers and matrix alloys. Interface observations, tensile experiments and hardness measurements of the composites were conducted to evaluate the coating effect.By comparison with γ-Al2O3 coating, the α-Al2O3 coating was found to be more effective in controlling the interfacial reactions, and it helped to enhance the elastic modulus of the composite. The introduction of alumina coatings to the composite postponed the peak-aging process, due to a smaller depletion of magnesium in the matrix of the coated composites.

Abstract:Alumina borate (A{sub 18}B{sub 4}O{sub 33}) whisker reinforced aluminum composites have attracted interest because of their high specific strength, high modulus and low cost. An obvious feature of the microstructure in A{sub 18}B{sub 4}O{sub 33}/Al composite is that an interfacial reaction exists between the whisker and the aluminum alloy. In order to discuss the influence of interface interaction between the whisker and matrix on the erosion resistance of composites, two reaction treatments are conducted. From the results of the treated composites, it can be obtained about the erosion characteristics of the composite materials under steady-state conditions.

Abstract:An aluminium borate whisker reinforced aluminium composite with a whisker volume fraction of 25% was fabricated by the squeeze casting method. The tensile and impact fracture behaviours of the composite were studied. Observation via TEM indicated that the higher the casting temperature, the higher the degree of interfacial reaction. Tensile and impact experiments showed that there is an optimum degree of interfacial reaction corresponding to the maximum strength and toughness of the composite. Observation of the fracture surfaces of the composites using SEM suggests that the interfacial reaction plays an important role in the fracture mechanism of the composite.

Abstract:Solid erosion of as cast and treated 19.5%(volume fraction) Al 18 B 4O 33 whisker/AC4C Al composites was investigated at room temperature under steady state conditions. The results indicated that the interfacial reaction between the whisker and matrix alloy have an effect on the erosion characteristics of the composites. The erosion resistance of the composites with a strongly bonded whisker matrix interface and the higher whisker strength resulted from suitable reaction treatment can be improved at high impact angles and is the same as the as cast composites at low angle. For the composites after excessive reaction treatment, the weak and brittle interface fractures easily at small strains, and the whiskers with relative low strength and low hardness at the specimen surface can not effectively resist the microcutting or microploughing action, thus the composites exhibit reduced erosion resistance.

Abstract:The changes of the surface morphology of an extruded composite of Al 18B 4O 33 w/ pure Al during the early stages of corrosion by 3.5 % NaCl solution were observed by atomic force microscopy. The features of corrosion of the composite samples with different normal angles to the extrusion orientation in 3.5% NaCl solution were studied. The results indicated that corrosion occurred preferentially at the interface between whisker and matrix. Pitting occurred frequently at the end of whisker firstly and propagated along the interface between whisker and matrix. The number and size of pits on the surfaces of the extruded Al 18B 4O 33 w/ pure Al composite samples are different due to the sample surfaces with various angles to the extrusion orientation of the bulk composite.

Abstract:Copper coating was deposited on the surface of aluminum borate whisker by an electroless plating method.This method was used to modify the interfacial property of squeeze-casting aluminum borate whisker reinforced 6061Al matrix composite.Interface observation indicates that the spinel reaction（MgAl2O4） is hindered by the copper coating,and the difference in interfacial reaction degree affects the tensile property and aging behavior of the composite.For the composite with less spinel reaction（MgAl2O4）,its peak-aging process are postponed due to less depletion of magnesium.On the fracture surface of copper-coated composite dimples and fractures of whiskers are more,but on the fracture surface of uncoated composite pull-out of whiskers are more than that on the coated one.In uncoated composite the fracture generally originates from the near-interface-region.

Abstract:To control the interfacial reactions in squeeze-casting aluminum borate whisker reinforced 6061Al composites, sol-gel γ- and α-Al2O3 coatings were deposited on the whisker surfaces for preparation of the alumina-coated composites. Tensile and bending tests of the coated and uncoated composites were carried out. Experimental results indicated that, although the room-temperature strength of the composite was not improved, the introduction of alumina coatings contributed to the enhancement of elastic modulus. To eliminate the strength-scattering effect and to evaluate the thermal-resistance of alumina coatings, an index of strength-decrease degree (Δσbd) was useful. The alumina coatings were found to improve the composite's high-temperature strength and change the fracture mechanisms of the composite at different testing temperatures.

Abstract:Interfaces of the Al18B4O33w/Al composite subjected to different thermal exposure treatments were investigated by means of TEM and its tensile properties were tested. The results of observations indicated that the interfacial reaction took place in the specimens thermally exposed at 500°C for 50h, the products of which were γ-Al2O3 with the spinel structure and boron. In addition, tensile tests showed that Yong’s modulus, ultimate tensile strength as well as yield strength initially increased, then decreased with time at 500°C; however, Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength both had an increasing tendency with temperature for a given 10h exposure time, but yield strength initially increased and then decreased with increasing temperature for a 10h exposure time. Before the interfacial reaction took place, welding of the microcracks at interfaces of the starting as-squeeze cast composite was responsible for an improvement in tensile properties. However, the interfacial reaction always deteriorated the tensile properties of the Al18B4O33w/Al composite.

Abstract:A pure aluminum matrix composite reinforced by aluminum borate whisker with Bi2O3 coating was fabricated by squeeze casting method. During fabrication, there occurred an interfacial reaction between Bi2O3 coating and Al matrix, accompanying the formation of metallic bismuth on the interface. The compressive deformation results show that the existing bismuth coating on the interface is beneficial to the compressive deformation of composite thus decreases the maximum compressive flow stress and the probability of whisker fracture during compressive deformation at elevated temperature. The apparent activation energy of the composite with Bi2O3 coating is much larger than that of the composite without Bi2O3 coating at 220–320°C. However, both of these two composites present the comparable apparent activation energy at 400–500°C.

Abstract:To control the interfacial reaction in aluminum borate whisker reinforced 6061Al composite, copper was coated on the whisker surface using an electroless plating technique. The pure whisker reinforced and copper-coated whisker reinforced 6061Al composites were fabricated by squeeze-casting method. The interfacial reactions and the ultimate tensile strengths of the composites were studied after solution treatment at 490°C for different time. The results indicate that the solution treatment has great influence upon the interfacial reactions and the ultimate tensile strengths of the composites. The interfacial reaction in the composites reinforced by copper-coated whisker takes place mainly between the coating and 6061Al matrix, and the ultimate tensile strengths of the composites are enhanced greatly by the coating. In addition, the solution treatment can improve further the ultimate tensile strength of the composite with coated whisker.

Abstract:A sol-gel alumina coating method was used to modify the interfacial properties of squeeze-casting aluminium borate whisker reinforced 6061A1 composites. Interface observations indicate that the interfacial reactions have been hindered by both the γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3 coatings, and the controlling effect is better with an increase of the coating thickness. The difference in interfacial reaction degree affects the bending properties and aging behavior of the composites. The composite with less interfacial reactions has a higher elastic modulus, and its peak-aging process has been postponed due to less depletion of magnesium. More whiskers are pulled out from the fracture surface of coated composites, while in the uncoated composite the fracture generally originates from the near-interface-region. On modifying the interfacial properties of the composites, the α-Al2O3 coating shows great advantages over the γ-Al2O3 coating.
On the Thermal Stability of Coating in an Al18B4O33w/α-Al2O3/6061Al Composite

Abstract:A sol–gel α-Al2O3 coating was deposited on aluminum borate whiskers to restrain the interfacial reaction occurring in a 6061Al matrix composite. The fine structure of the interface in the coated composite was characterized by electron microscopy. Experimental results showed that, even after thermal exposure at temperatures up to 550°C, the nanocrystalline α-Al2O3 coating was effective in hindering the interfacial reaction between the whisker and the matrix and preserving the tensile strength of the composite. But the coating dissolved and thus lost its protective role after thermal exposure at 800°C. This may be due to extensive diffusion of elements at the whisker/liquidus matrix interface.

Abstract:The aging behavior of alumina borate whisker (Al(18)B(4)O(33)w/AC8A-Al) composite was examined by hardness and differential scanning calorimetry heat flow measurement. Microstructures were investigated by transmission electronic microscope. The results indicated that the interfacial reaction played an important role in the aging precipitation behavior of the composite. As the interfacial reaction between the whiskers and AC8A-Al alloy consumed the Mg atom of the matrix in the composite, the time to the peak aging of the composite was almost same as that of the AC8A-Al alloy. The free precipitation zone can be found nearby some whisker in the composite, duo to Mg content decreased in the matrix. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Abstract:A new aluminum matrix composite containing β-eucryptite particles and aluminum borate whiskers was obtained by a squeeze casting technique. This composite exhibits a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and high strength. The interfacial reactions on both the surface of β-eucryptite particle and the surface of aluminum borate whisker in the composite were studied by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The effect of interfacial reaction on the CTE of the composite was investigated in detail. The results indicate that the interfacial reaction product on the surface of β-eucryptite particle is Mg2SiO4 (forsterite). The solution treatment at 520°C has little effect on the interfacial reaction on the aluminum borate whisker, but the degree of interfacial reaction on the surface of β-eucryptite particle increases with solution treatment time. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the composite is affected greatly by the degree of interfacial reaction on the surface of β-eucryptite particle.

Abstract:The fracture characteristic of an aluminum borate whisker-reinforced aluminum alloy 6061 was investigated. The results show that the T4 treatment has an optimal effect on tensile properties of this composite, while the degree of the interfacial reaction increases with the treatment time increasing. The origin, the configuration, the density and the distribution of subcracks on the sides of fracture surfaces as well as the main crack are corresponding to the mechanical of the composite, and also have a relationship with the interface reaction degree.

Abstract:In the present work, the corrosion behavior of the B4C/pure Al composite in a Cl- containing environment is investigated. Thereby, the B4C/pure Al composites have been subjected to the different heat treatments to highlight the impact of the corrosion behavior at the different interfaces. The results of current sensing atomic force microscope (CSAFM) and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPFM) show that the dissolution of the Al matrix is relevant to the micro-galvanic corrosion between anodic Al matrix and cathodic B4C particles. The as quenched (AQ) composites with a higher volta potential difference (VPD) show inferior anticorrosion property than that of the as produced (AP) composites and the as annealed (AA) composites. By combining X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and geometric phase analysis (GPA), the higher residual stress and obvious interfacial strain between the B4C particles and the Al matrix of the AP samples is detected, which result in increasing the driving force of micro-galvanic corrosion.
