Abstract:Objective Gray scale contrast-enhanced ultrasonography was used in the evaluation of acute renal trauma in comparison with pathological findings in order to explore the clinical significance of this new diagnostic method. Methods Cute and blunt injuries of different levels were produced in 32 kidneys of 18 New Zealand rabbits, gray scale contrast-enhanced ultrasonography was used to examine the damaged kidneys and the results were compared with surgical and pathological findings. Results Intrarenal hematomas appeared to be non-enhanced or unevenly enhanced areas in 26 kidneys during arterial and parenchymal phase.Subcapsular hematomas appeared to be arc-shaped non-enhanced area in 18 kidneys.Active hemorrhage within 21 kidneys or around the kidneys showed abnormally enhanced.Diffuse concusion showed delayed and attenuated enhanced in 2 kidneys. Conclusions Gray scale contrast enhanced ultrasonography could clearly demonstrate the site and degree of damage and help to determine the occurrence of bleeding so as to improve the accuracy of ultrasonography for the diagnosis of acute renal injury.
