Abstract:As biodiversity declines, wildlife conservation focuses on in situ and ex situ management strategies. Zoo‐based breeding programmes are often designed to contribute to the conservation of species that are threatened in the wild. Diet contributes to the reproductive success, disease status and longevity of all animals. It is near‐impossible to replicate a species' diet in captivity using only the species they consume in the wild, but the nutritional composition of a wild diet, if known, can be closely matched using commercially available foods for which the nutritional composition has been calculated. Ecological research has identified food items of importance in the diet of many species. However, the nutritional composition of these food items is rarely evaluated, even though the composition of wild food items is important in understanding the dietary adaptations and requirements of wildlife. In contrast, the nutritional requirements of domestic species are well researched and can be used to predict a range of plausible nutrient requirements of some wild species, especially those with similar life histories. Access to wild populations provides further opportunities for nutritional science to determine the requirements of individual species. Small‐scale dietary experimentation undertaken at conservation institutions may show positive effects on health and welfare but is rarely published in the scientific literature. This review describes current standards in nutritional management of birds and recommends pathways for filling knowledge gaps. Research on mammals has dominated the nutrition literature, so there is a relative lack of nutritional management information for birds. We combine concepts of domestic animal nutrition with recent findings on the nutritional requirements of birds to provide a foundation for further studies of avian nutrition. We call for the broader zoological community to share data and collaborate on nutritional research to support conservation institutions in nutritional management of wild birds.

The many major problems confronting human beings, such as environmental pollution, lacking of resources ecological damages and health harm can be solved by exploiting and investigating microorganisms. Biotechniques will produce significant effects on sustainable development. The main factors affecting aqueous ecology and their interrilation were discussed. The function, evolvement and prospects of microorganisms applied in ecological regulation were emphatically analyzed.The feasibility of application and industry of advanced microorganism techniques,such as genetic engineering technique and clonal technique in environmental field was analyzed.

Abstract:It has been discovered that intestinal fungi play important roles in microecological systems of human body, which affect the human health by influencing gut microbiota directly or indirectly. This article reviews the research progress about the fungi-bacteria interaction, and effects of intestinal fungi and their products on host’s health. The article also discusses the correlation of intestinal fungi with inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, HBV-related liver diseases, metabolism-associated fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease, indicating that intestinal fungi are widely involved in the development of human diseases.

Abstract:In recent decades, probiotics have attracted widespread attention and their application in healthcare and animal husbandry has been promising. Among many probiotics, Bacillus coagulans (B. coagulans) has become a key player in the field of probiotics in recent years. It has been demonstrated to be involved in regulating the balance of the intestinal microbiota, promoting metabolism and utilization of nutrients, improving immunity, and more importantly, it also has good industrial properties such as high temperature resistance, acid resistance, bile resistance, and the like. This review highlights the effects of B. coagulans in animal husbandry and its underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:The plant-soil subsystem is one of the most important terrestrial ecosystems relating to the human health. The movement of organic pollutants in this subsystem is dominated by various micro-ecological processes on root-soil interface. These micro-ecological processes are mostly driven by physio-chemical and biological changes induced by root-soil interactions, such as root exudation of organic anions and protons. In order to safeguard the sustainable production of safety food and to maintain the environmental quality, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of these micro-ecological processes. This paper presents a personal overview on the recent achievements in this research field with the aim of provoking further in depth research in the near future.

Abstract:With the application and development of high-throughput sequencing technology, the structure and function of insect gut microbiota have been analysed, which lays a foundation for further exploring the intricate relationships between gut microbiota and host feeding behaviour. The microbial community in the insect gut, as an important ecological factor, affects the host's food selection and nutritional metabolic processes through various mechanisms, which play a key role in population dynamics and ecosystems. The implications of these interactions are profound, affecting agricultural practices, biodiversity, and the broader environment, such as pollination and pest control. In-depth exploration of the molecular mechanism of the interaction between gut microbiota and hosts contributes to the grasp of insect biology and evolution and offers novel avenues for manipulating insect behaviour for practical applications in agriculture and environmental management. This paper focuses on the possible mechanisms of insect gut microbiota regulating host feeding behaviour. It inspires further research on the interaction between gut microbiota and insects affecting host behaviour.

Abstract:The misuse and abuse of antibiotics in livestock and poultry seriously endanger both human health and the continuously healthy development of the livestock and poultry breeding industry. Plant-derived bioactive compounds (curcumin, capsaicin, quercetin, resveratrol, catechin, lignans, etc.) have been widely studied in recent years, due to their extensive pharmacological functions and biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antistress, antitumor, antiviral, lowering blood glucose and lipids, and improving insulin sensitivity. Numerous studies have demonstrated that plant-derived bioactive compounds are able to enhance the host's ability to resist or diminish diseases by regulating the abundance of its gut microbiota, achieving great potential as a substitute for antibiotics. Recent developments in both humans and animals have also highlighted the major contribution of gut microbiota to the host's nutrition, metabolism, immunity, and neurological functions. Changes in gut microbiota composition are closely related to the development of obesity and can lead to numerous metabolic diseases. Mounting evidence has also demonstrated that plant-derived bioactive compounds, especially curcumin, can improve intestinal barrier function by regulating intestinal flora. Furthermore, bioactive constituents can be also directly metabolized by intestinal flora and further produce bioactive metabolites by the interaction between the host and intestinal flora. This largely enhances the protective effect of bioactive compounds on the host intestinal and whole body health, indicating that the bidirectional regulation between bioactive compounds and intestinal flora has great application potential in maintaining the host's intestinal health and preventing or treating various diseases. This review mainly summarizes the latest research progress in the bioregulation between gut microbiota and plant-derived bioactive compounds, together with its application potential in humans and animals, so as to provide theoretical support for the application of plant-derived bioactive compounds as new feed additives and potential substitutes for antibiotics in the livestock and poultry breeding industry. Overall, based on this review, it can be concluded that plant-derived bioactive compounds, by modulating gut microbiota, hold great promise toward the healthy development of both humans and animal husbandry.

Advance in ecological environment impact of veterinary drug residues.

Abstract:The research progress in ecological environmental impact of the veterinary drug residues was reviewed from the aspects of the environmental behavior of the veterinary drug residues such as transportation,accumulation and degradation and their influences on animals,plants and microorganisms,etc.The research priorities in the field of eco-toxicities of veterinary drug residues were prospected.It is pointed out that many veterinary drugs are adsorbed by soil and accumulated by plants,earthworms,and other organisms.The effects of veterinary drugs on plants and soil microbial community are mainly dependent on the properties of veterinary drugs and types of soil.The antimicrobials easily induce bacterial resistance and even pollution-induces community tolerance(PICT) in soil.So veterinary drug residues become long-term risks to ecosystem health including human beings.

Abstract:Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide health benefits to the host by improving the intestinal microecological balance,which have been widely used in livestock production as a feed additive.Not only can probiotics promote the ability of gastrointestinal tract for digesting and absorbing,and thus,improve performance of animals,but also can regulate host metabolism and prevent metabolic diseases of livestocks efficiently.This reviewprovided an update on probiotic effects on digestion,absorption and liver metabolism of nutrients in order to provide theoratical evidence for application of probiotics in animal production.

Abstract:This paper introduced briefly the specific characteristics of nanotechnology (such as great specific surface areas, a lot of surface active centers, high surface activity, strong absorbing ability and high catalytic efficiency). The purpose of this review was to apply these characteristics to animal husbandry, such as functions of nanoparticles uptake and absorption in gastrointestinal tract, sustained and controlled release of drugs by loading nanoparticles, animal genetic and breeding and adjuvant vaccines. Potential applications and future prospects of nanotechnology in animal husbandry were also highlighted.

Abstract:As the second genome, host associated microbiota can enhance the functions of host immune systems, improve host nutrient availability and acquisition capacity, and increase host resistance to abiotic stress. Constructing host associated microbiomes by applying various bioinoculants has become an attractive tool for promoting human health and increasing food production. However, despite their promising properties, the efficacy of bioinoculants vary significantly in actual field and clinical practices. Understanding the global design principles that shape the outcomes of interactions between bioinoculants and target host and microbiome symbionts remains a considerable challenge. In this study, we used a wheat production system as a case study to quantitatively understand how soil nutrient status impacts the establishment of host and microbiome interaction networks and their subsequent interactions with external bioinoculants. We found that soil organic carbon, one of the most general soil properties for global crop productivity and resilience, could affect the outcome of bioinoculant applications in wheat production systems, which led to functional instability in bioinoculant application outcomes. The results of this study significantly improved our understanding of the global design principles of nutrition dependent root microbiome engineering for regulating crop yield via the application of live microbial inoculants and provide theoretical guidance for bioinoculant applications in agricultural practice.

Abstract:To study microecology disturbance, we need to understand microecology balance first. Microecology balance is formed through a long-term evolutionary process, in which the normal micro-population exists with its hosts in different developmental stages in a dynamic and physiological group. This combination between the micro-population and its hosts is a physiogenic entity of normal interaction in the different levels of the ecological organizational structure of the normal micro-population and ecosystem spatial structure of hosts (human, animal or plant) in the body or on the body surface under the effect of the common macro environment. The internal structure and condition of this entity is the ecological balance [1]. And the reverse side of ecological balance is the micro dysbiosis, which includes disturbance among microbes, between microbe and host and between the microbe-host entity and the external environment.

Abstract:This paper reviews the research in nutrition and feed development in aquaculture animals in recent years, and analyzes the problem and future development of feed industry. In past 10 years, great advances have been achieved in aquaculture animal nutrient requirements, feeding, larval feed, broodstock nutrition, additives etc. But there are still some problems regarding aquafeed including high feed conversion ratio, high environmental discharge, high feed cost and unstable profit. In the near future, the research and development of aquaculture nutrition and feed should focus on “high efficiency, safety, economic and environmental neutral”. New concepts from ecology and genomics technologies should be applied in the study on molecular mechanism of nutrition and metabolism, nutrient requirements and accurate feed and feeding, feed quality control and processing, animal quality regulation, etc. The government should provide more opportunities for cooperation between scientists from different areas and long term support.

Abstract:A healthy soil plant continuum is critical for maintaining agroecosystem functions and ensuring food security, which is the basis of sustainable agricultural development. Diverse soil microorganisms form a complex assembly and play an important role in agroecosystems by regulating nutrient cycling, promoting plant growth, and alleviating biotic and abiotic stresses. Improving microbial coexistence may be an effective and practical solution for the promotion of soil–plant ecosystem health in the face of the impacts of anthropogenic activities and global climate change. Modern coexistence theory is a useful theoretical framework for studying the coexistence of species that are competing for resources. Here, we briefly introduce the basic framework of modern coexistence theory, including the theoretical definitions and mathematical calculations for niche difference and fitness difference, as well as ways to test for these differences empirically. The possible effects of several major biotic and abiotic factors, such as biological interactions, climate change, environmental stress, and fertilization, on microbial niche and fitness differences are discussed. From the perspective of stabilizing and equalizing mechanisms, the potential roles of microbe–microbe interactions and plant–microbe interactions in promoting healthy soil–microbe–plant continuum are presented. We suggest that the use of the coexistence theory framework for the design and construction of microbial communities in agricultural production can provide a solid basis for the biological improvement of agroecosystems.
A global meta-analysis of animal manure application and soil microbial ecology based on random control treatments

Abstract:The processes involved in soil domestication have altered the soil microbial ecology. We examined the question of whether animal manure application affects the soil microbial ecology of farmlands. The effects of global animal manure application on soil microorganisms were subjected to a meta-analysis based on randomized controlled treatments. A total of 2303 studies conducted in the last 30 years were incorporated into the analysis, and an additional 45 soil samples were collected and sequenced to obtain 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA data. The results revealed that manure application increased soil microbial biomass. Manure application alone increased bacterial diversity (M-Z: 7.546 and M-I: 8.68) and inhibited and reduced fungal diversity (M-Z: −1.15 and M-I: −1.03). Inorganic fertilizer replaced cattle and swine manure and provided nutrients to soil microorganisms. The soil samples of the experimental base were analyzed, and the relative abundances of bacteria and fungi were altered compared with no manure application. Manure increased bacterial diversity and reduced fungal diversity. Mrakia frigida and Betaproteobacteriales , which inhibit other microorganisms, increased significantly in the domesticated soil. Moreover, farm sewage treatments resulted in a bottleneck in the manure recovery rate that should be the focus of future research. Our results suggest that the potential risks of restructuring the microbial ecology of cultivated land must be considered.

Abstract:The mammalian gut, the site of digestion and nutrients absorption, harbors diverse microbes that play an essential role in maintaining physiological homeostasis of the gastrointestinal system. These commensal microbes are important for the normal development of the host immune system and alteration of the microbiota of gastrointestinal system has been found to play an important role in the development of obesity, metabolic syndromes such as type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Several recent studies with mouse models and in humans have demonstrated that intestinal microbiota has important role in host metabolism by regulating energy absorption and modulating the endocrine functions. A variety of nutrients and metabolites derived from commensal bacteria have been proved to be important regulators in improving gut barrier functions and immune homeostasis. Here we review current literature on the interactions between microbes and host in the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract and based on these interactions we proposed a hypothesis in which the microbiota interacts with the host gastrointestine through a gut-brainendocrine- immune system. By understanding this system, we should be in better position to develop treatment for metabolic diseases and inflammation in human and animals.

Abstract:Features of soil animal community ecology researches in China were summarized in this paper,including that the research areas mainly distributed in eastern China,extensive ecological systems were investigated from different aspects,and rapid development in application researches.Research developments were summarized from the view of ecology,i.e.relationships between soil animal community and environment,composition and diversity,structure,function,succession and soil animal community in disturbed ecosystems.Several key fields in soil animal community ecology research in the future were put forward.
