Abstract:Abstract This research focuses on the renovation of historical buildings of Zhuyangxin Plaster Store, Hangzhou, China. By following three architectural design strategies, namely protecting the surrounding environment, rejuvenating the commercial and cultural function and recovering the original appearance, the historical buildings are to be retrofitted to achieve a sustainable regeneration. Meanwhile, based on an on-site investigation into the present residential environment of the buildings, suitable architectural technologies to improve the residential environment are analyzed from the aspects of envelop, facilities, sun shading, passive technology and sunlight utilization. After some retrofit measures were adopted for the envelop of the historical buildings, the simulation results showed that not only the thermal and light environment will be improved, but also energy efficiency of 50.34% can be achieved according to the standard in China.

Abstract:Based on the reinforcement and reconstruction of historical buildings in the city,the importance of the protectioin of historical building is presented.According to the ideology of classification,for the building that only interior reconstruction is permitted,the columns shall beweakin architecture and strongin structure.The beams should have enough capacity and good connection with the exist structure,so the building will has a good anti-seismic performance;and for the builing that outside reconstructioin is permitted,the safty in construction is emphasized.The existing wals that shall be removed after the new structure proves to be a good method.Both of the two situations are given with three new foundation schemes,pier foundatin,composed foundation and cantilever foundation.

Abstract:With the advent of the post-industrial era, China’s traditional industrial industry has gradually declined or transformed, leaving a large number of industrial buildings abandoned and idle. A majority of these existing industrial building heritages were built with original facade design, which cannot meet the requirements of the time and no longer fits into the new urban interface. From the perspective of language relationship in architecture, building skin and building space are two vital interdependent elements, and the study of building materials as a carrier has a significant impetus to the exploration of building skin. Therefore, the external wall material has naturally become an important factor directly related to the design and performance of the renovation of the industrial building heritages. Its performance and form largely influence or determine the possible ways and means of the transformation of the heritage facades. How should material performance be used to preserve the historical imprint of industrial heritage while conforming to contemporary aesthetics? What are the rules of material performance in the renovation of industrial buildings? These are the issues that needs to be considered and studied in the transformation of industrial building heritage.This paper studies the exterior wall materials and structures in the renovation of industrial building heritage facades, and uses reconstruction theory as a methodology to sort out effective strategies and methods for the material performance of industrial building heritage facade renovation. First it summarizes and elaborates the classification and performance characteristics of the materials of heritage facades as well as the principles and methods of facades transformation. Later it focuses on the practice and development of the renovation of facades in China’s industrial building heritages, taking the reform practice of Nanjing Hutchison Factory as an example. Combing the analysis and summary of the practical project with the theory, this paper helps improve the theoretical system of architectural skin materials within the scope of architectural design theory, summarizes the design concepts consistent with the current view, and conclude the corresponding architectural skin design strategy and methods.

Abstract:The preservation of historical traditional architectural ensembles faces multifaceted challenges, and the need for facade renovation and updates has become increasingly prominent. In conventional architectural updating and renovation processes, assessing design schemes and the redesigning component are often time-consuming and labor-intensive. The knowledge-driven method utilizes a wide range of knowledge resources, such as historical documents, architectural drawings, and photographs, commonly used to guide and optimize the conservation, restoration, and management of architectural heritage. Recently, the emergence of artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) technologies has provided new solutions for creating architectural facades, introducing a new research paradigm to the renovation plans for historic districts with their variety of options and high efficiency. In this study, we propose a workflow combining Grasshopper with Stable Diffusion: starting with Grasshopper to generate concise line drawings, then using the ControlNet and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) models to produce images of traditional Minnan architectural facades, allowing designers to quickly preview and modify the facade designs during the renovation of traditional architectural clusters. Our research results demonstrate Stable Diffusion’s precise understanding and execution ability concerning architectural facade elements, capable of generating regional traditional architectural facades that meet architects’ requirements for style, size, and form based on existing images and prompt descriptions, revealing the immense potential for application in the renovation of traditional architectural groups and historic districts. It should be noted that the correlation between specific architectural images and proprietary term prompts still requires further addition due to the limitations of the database. Although the model generally performs well when trained on traditional Chinese ancient buildings, the accuracy and clarity of more complex decorative parts still need enhancement, necessitating further exploration of solutions for handling facade details in the future.

Abstract:Industrial heritage is critical representation of the industrial civilization. It carries the memory of the modernization process of the city, and provides precious foundations for city renewal and brand building. The transform of industrial structure and the rising awareness of heritage protection make the waterfront docks, garages, and old factories become important industrial heritages. Based on a review of industrial heritage and the spirit of the city, this study uses the industrial heritage area on the west side of Gongchen Bridge, Hangzhou,which adopts the museum approach and builtds Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museums, as a case study. It firstly examines the development model and initiatives undertaken by the management team, including the holistic protection model, positioning on the mass audience, live presentation approach, initiative management, and adopting of digital techniques. This study suggests a dual-layer model, including a basic element layer and a supporting element layer, referring to industrial heritage protection and prolonging the spirit of the city in this case. Through in-depth interviews from a view of a city wanderer, this study further assesses different stakeholders' attitudes towards the museums' practice in protecting and transferring the industrial heritages. In this case, the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage takes a comprehensive form which integrates partial functions of traditional museum, creativity industry park and leisure tourism place together instead of a single so-called reuse model. Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museums own its unique lead, innovation and brand, which is bound up with external factors including Hangzhou's urban renewal concept, leisure tourism environment, cultural industries cultivation, internationalization, etc., and internal factors brought by the Grand Canal(Hangzhou Section) Comprehensive Protection Project. Therefore, empirical model related to this case could be only provided as a reference and comparison, and more effective ways would be found if combined with the trend of urban organic renewal, heritage authenticity protection, industrial chain extension, and human emotional appeal.

Abstract:How to realise the goal of city revival through the preservation of historic districts is an important issue for all historic cities. This article introduces the Preservation and Renovation Project of Zhongshan Road in Hangzhou regarding its guiding principles, design concepts, and the entire construction process. In this project, the existing historical buildings along Zhongshan Road were preserved by keeping the remains of different historical periods and various lifestyles of the inhabitants. Rather than merely refurbishing the street front only, we reconstructed the Southern Song Dynasty city-block walls along Zhongshan Road and restored the Fangxiang city fabric to create the streetscape of the former Imperial Avenue. Afforested terraced teahouses were built along the road, and the original water system was restored so as to realise the atmosphere of ‘watertown’. New buildings were added by adopting local materials and vernacular building forms. The article summarises two strategies for the preservation of a historic district in a large city. One is the comprehensive project planning by research and investigation. The other is the overall design guideline for the street blocks. It also reflects on the disappointing aspects that mainly resulted from time limitations and the poor taste in the refurbishment of shop houses.

Abstract:The pst-industrial era witnesses the gradual decline or transformation of China's traditional industrial industry. Meanwhile, the original facade design of most of the existing industrial architectural heritage can no longer keep up with the pace of the times, which left a lot of issues that need to be considered and studied urgently in the renovation of industrial architectural heritage. In this article, the adaptive facade renovation design of industrial architectural heritage was studied and effective design strategies were summarized. Firstly, the research background of adaptive renovation of industrial architectural heritage and the research objects in this article were outlined and discussed, and then the relevant concepts and materials of facade renovation of industrial architectural heritage were summarized. Secondly, the renovation of Nanjing Hutchison Factory was cited here as an example for specific analysis. Finally, based on the analysis and summary of the case, corresponding design strategies and methods for the adaptive facade renovation were summarized, and the future research direction was put forward. This article is not only of great guidance and promotion to the renovation of Hutchison, but also of certain reference value to similar facade renovation projects of architectural heritages in China and even in the world.

Abstract:The facade form of vernacular architecture is an outward manifestation of the building structure, which can easily give people an intuitive impression of the building. Most of the existing studies focus on analyzing the construction process and building materials of vernacular architecture in detail, but there are few studies on the characteristic elements in the form of architectural facades. The main objective of this study is to propose a new methodology for objectively analyzing the morphological characteristics of architectural facades with complex networks to support the sustainable development of vernacular architecture. The results of the study show that the vernacular architectural facades in the Jiangnan region are characterized by the richness of details and distinctive layers and that the formal elements that can show the regional characteristics are preserved in the process of the sustainable development of vernacular architecture. The most crucial part of this is the roof shape, followed by the simplification of the detailing and how the vertical form elements are laid out horizontally. The article addresses the protection and continuity of vernacular architectural facade characteristics and proposes a strategic plan to strengthen the vernacular architectural facade characteristics in the Jiangnan region, aiming to protect the traditional characteristics and continue the traditional culture.
