Abstract:In the increasingly warming wave of renovation and reconstruction in old cities,exploring models which can balance various contradictions is the chief problem in the redevelopment of old cities in China.However,there is no general model.Taking Hangzhou Quanye Li as an example,this article explores the methods and processes meeting with the Chinese current situation.Based on the site survey,the project analyzes the development mode,planning method,and architecture designing ideas of the construction and renovation in Quanye Li old residential area from the angles of sociology and typology.Finally,it suggests to exploiting apartments for the elderly and residential districts for both oldsters and youngsters,as well as continuing traditional settlement texture and keeping live traditional spatial sense in the planning and architecture design.

Abstract:Abstract This research focuses on the renovation of historical buildings of Zhuyangxin Plaster Store, Hangzhou, China. By following three architectural design strategies, namely protecting the surrounding environment, rejuvenating the commercial and cultural function and recovering the original appearance, the historical buildings are to be retrofitted to achieve a sustainable regeneration. Meanwhile, based on an on-site investigation into the present residential environment of the buildings, suitable architectural technologies to improve the residential environment are analyzed from the aspects of envelop, facilities, sun shading, passive technology and sunlight utilization. After some retrofit measures were adopted for the envelop of the historical buildings, the simulation results showed that not only the thermal and light environment will be improved, but also energy efficiency of 50.34% can be achieved according to the standard in China.

Abstract:Through an analysis of Hangzhou's Jinghang Grand Canal riverside industrial land uses this paper emphasizes the importance of maintaining the relationship of people with the land with the continuity of local culture.The renovation model for riverside industrial land is discussed and an interactive function conglom-eration model is proposed.The conglomeration model identifies the growth point for renovation that retains sustainable functions and maintains both old and new building ratios.An effective functional cycle that considers both functional and location needs is formed to push the area toward positive development.

Abstract:The facade form of vernacular architecture is an outward manifestation of the building structure, which can easily give people an intuitive impression of the building. Most of the existing studies focus on analyzing the construction process and building materials of vernacular architecture in detail, but there are few studies on the characteristic elements in the form of architectural facades. The main objective of this study is to propose a new methodology for objectively analyzing the morphological characteristics of architectural facades with complex networks to support the sustainable development of vernacular architecture. The results of the study show that the vernacular architectural facades in the Jiangnan region are characterized by the richness of details and distinctive layers and that the formal elements that can show the regional characteristics are preserved in the process of the sustainable development of vernacular architecture. The most crucial part of this is the roof shape, followed by the simplification of the detailing and how the vertical form elements are laid out horizontally. The article addresses the protection and continuity of vernacular architectural facade characteristics and proposes a strategic plan to strengthen the vernacular architectural facade characteristics in the Jiangnan region, aiming to protect the traditional characteristics and continue the traditional culture.

Abstract:How to realise the goal of city revival through the preservation of historic districts is an important issue for all historic cities. This article introduces the Preservation and Renovation Project of Zhongshan Road in Hangzhou regarding its guiding principles, design concepts, and the entire construction process. In this project, the existing historical buildings along Zhongshan Road were preserved by keeping the remains of different historical periods and various lifestyles of the inhabitants. Rather than merely refurbishing the street front only, we reconstructed the Southern Song Dynasty city-block walls along Zhongshan Road and restored the Fangxiang city fabric to create the streetscape of the former Imperial Avenue. Afforested terraced teahouses were built along the road, and the original water system was restored so as to realise the atmosphere of ‘watertown’. New buildings were added by adopting local materials and vernacular building forms. The article summarises two strategies for the preservation of a historic district in a large city. One is the comprehensive project planning by research and investigation. The other is the overall design guideline for the street blocks. It also reflects on the disappointing aspects that mainly resulted from time limitations and the poor taste in the refurbishment of shop houses.

Abstract:Historic and cultural districts reflect the cultural memory of a specific historical period, but they are also the physical space where real people live and move around, and therefore their conservation is an important part of urban development. This study takes the old district renovation project of Enning Road in Guangzhou as an example, describes the current situation after the renovation, discusses the problems, refers to successful cases of renovation at home and abroad, and proposes renovation measures from the perspective of visitors sense of experience. From the end of the 19th century to the present day, a series of renovation policies have revitalised Enning Road, and the transformation has gradually changed from large-scale demolition and construction to micro-renewal of the city. The development of Enning Road, as a commercial centre with a local historical character, has revealed a lack of renovation for the experience of tourists in terms of travel and safety, as the number of tourists attracted has increased year by year. This paper proposes zoning and beautification of shop decoration, enhanced traffic safety planning in the scenic area and the development of special tourist routes under the conditions of tourist demand.

Abstract:This research paper sketches qualitative dialogue regarding a topic of radical renovation caused from the Westernization process in Singapore Chinatown. Singapore"s urban policy in preserving its historic districts was implemented in the context of a fast-expanding economy and rapid urban development under westernization and globalization toward developed western countries. However, the authorities did not pay attention to the needs of traditional conservation in Chinatown. Even though Singapore’s Chinatown benefited in part from its modernized and westernized appearance, the stories of the shophouses and Majesty Theatre show that the regional policy has not succeeded in retaining the traditional and historical activities which were reflective of the authentic local community life. After several decades of demolition and rebuilding, there is now a cautious and keen governmental interest in conserving areas of historic-ethnic Singapore. There is nowhere that better represents and manifests the history of Singaporean and Chinese culture than in Singapore’s Chinatown. In particular, the governing authorities have radically redeveloped and globalized Chinatown in Singapore with Western standards based on modernization and globalization. However, the regional history is a society’s memory of its past. Thus, when structures and districts have excellent historic properties, they should be managed and conserved in a proper way. Furthermore, to advocate for the preservation of slums and decrepit shophouse buildings because of romantic sentiments is undoubtedly required for improving their future, and does not constitute an unrealistic and undesirable aim. Buildings and ways of life should be preserved because they have certain benefits to society as a whole.

Abstract:The value and necessity of the current renovation and reuse of old industrial buildings are obtained by introducing the status quo of China's old industrial buildings and citing the protection methods in the world in each period. Through the field investigation and observation analysis in Guangzhou, China, taking the number of users as the evaluation standard, the influence of the building material, color, number of floor, lighting and greening on the renovation and utilization of old industrial buildings is expounded. Combined with the relevant theory and case analysis, the favorable factors of affecting the old industrial building renovation are obtained to be some of the inspiration and recommendations of the old industrial building renovation and utilization. Finally, according to research conclusion, it is applied to the actual project. Through the project design, the previous research conclusion is further comprehensively used, and the final result is explained with the help of the three-dimensional model.

Abstract:In view of the rising energy consumption of rural buildings in recent years and the neglect of the connection with regional architectural culture in the construction process, this study explains the connotation and representation of regional culture based on the theoretical tool of cultural regional character, and constructs a suitable technical system for green transformation of rural buildings incorporating regional culture from five aspects, which are regional character creation, outdoor environment improvement, envelope structure performance optimization, indoor environment quality improvement, and renewable energy utilization. Based on the construction of this system, this study takes the renovation of the village residence in Nanping, Conghua, Guangzhou as an example, and explores the ways to achieve green and sustainable development in the renovation of rural buildings in the Lingnan Guangfu area with the guidance of the system and method of integrating regional culture and modern green building technology. The study compares the buildings of Nanping village residence in Conghua, Guangzhou, before and after the renovation, and finds that after the renovation, the building consumes less energy, the spatial quality is improved, and the overall spatial and stylistic expression is more in line with the regional cultural characteristics, which provides theoretical and practical references for the green renovation of rural buildings.
