Abstract:We consider extended $1$-perfect codes in Hamming graphs $H(n,q)$. Such nontrivial codes are known only when $n=2^k$, $k\geq 1$, $q=2$, or $n=q+2$, $q=2^m$, $m\geq 1$. Recently, Bespalov proved nonexistence of extended $1$-perfect codes for $q=3$, $4$, $n>q+2$. In this work, we characterize all positive integers $n$, $r$ and prime $p$, for which there exist such a code in $H(n,p^r)$.

Abstract:Extended $1$-perfect codes in the Hamming scheme $H(n,q)$ can be equivalently defined as codes that turn to $1$-perfect codes after puncturing in any coordinate, as completely regular codes with certain intersection array, as uniformly packed codes with certain weight coefficients, as diameter perfect codes with respect to a certain anticode, as distance-$4$ codes with certain dual distances. We define extended $1$-perfect bitrades in $H(n,q)$ in five different manners, corresponding to the different definitions of extended $1$-perfect codes, and prove the equivalence of these definitions of extended $1$-perfect bitrades. For $q=2^m$, we prove that such bitrades exist if and only if $n=lq+2$. For any $q$, we prove the nonexistence of extended $1$-perfect bitrades if $n$ is odd. Perfect Codes over Non-Prime Power Alphabets: An Approach Based on Diophantine Equations

Abstract:Perfect error-correcting codes allow for an optimal transmission of information while guaranteeing error correction. For this reason, proving their existence has been a classical problem in both pure mathematics and information theory. Indeed, the classification of the parameters of e-error correcting perfect codes over q-ary alphabets was a very active topic of research in the late 20th century. Consequently, all parameters of perfect e-error-correcting codes were found if e≥3, and it was conjectured that no perfect 2-error-correcting codes exist over any q-ary alphabet, where q>3. In the 1970s, this was proved for q a prime power, for q=2r3s and for only seven other values of q. Almost 50 years later, it is surprising to note that there have been no new results in this regard and the classification of 2-error-correcting codes over non-prime power alphabets remains an open problem. In this paper, we use techniques from the resolution of the generalised Ramanujan–Nagell equation and from modern computational number theory to show that perfect 2-error-correcting codes do not exist for 172 new values of q which are not prime powers, substantially increasing the values of q which are now classified. In addition, we prove that, for any fixed value of q, there can be at most finitely many perfect 2-error-correcting codes over an alphabet of size q.

Abstract:In this paper we consider completely regular codes, obtained from perfect (Hamming) codes by lifting the ground field. More exactly, for a given perfect code C of length n=(q^m-1)/(q-1) over F_q with a parity check matrix H_m, we define a new code C_{(m,r)} of length n over F_{q^r}, r > 1, with this parity check matrix H_m. The resulting code C_{(m,r)} is completely regular with covering radius R = min{r,m}. We compute the intersection numbers of such codes and, finally, we prove that Hamming codes are the only codes that, after lifting the ground field, result in completely regular codes.

Abstract:In this paper, the properties of the i-components of Hamming codes are described. We suggest constructions of the admissible families of components of Hamming codes. Each q-ary code of length m and minimum distance 5 (for q = 3, the minimum distance is 3) is shown to embed in a q-ary 1-perfect code of length n = (qm − 1)/(q − 1). Moreover, each binary code of length m+k and minimum distance 3k + 3 embeds in a binary 1-perfect code of length n = 2m − 1.

Abstract:It is well-known that pure quantum error correcting codes (QECCs) are constrained by a quantum version of the Hamming bound. Whether impure codes also obey such a bound, however, remains a long-standing question with practical implications for the efficacy of QECCs. We employ a combination of previously derived bounds on QECCs to demonstrate that a subset of all codes must obey the quantum Hamming bound. Specifically, we combine an analytical bound due to Rains with a numerical bound due to Li and Xing to show that no ((n,k,d < 127)) code can violate the quantum Hamming bound.

Abstract:It is known that the binary generalized Goppa codes are perfect codes for the weighted Hamming metrics. In this paper, we present the existence of a weighted Hamming metric that admits a binary Hamming code (resp. an extended binary Hamming code) to be perfect code. For a special weighted Hamming metric, we also give some structures of a 2-perfect code, show how to construct a 2-perfect linear code and obtain the weight distribution of a 2-perfect code from the partial information of the code.

Abstract:We consider Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding of multiple sources and extend the packing bound and the notion of perfect code from conventional channel coding to SW coding with more than two sources. We then introduce Hamming Codes for Multiple Sources (HCMSs) as a potential solution of perfect SW coding for arbitrary number of terminals. Moreover, we study the case with three sources in detail. We present the necessary conditions of a perfect SW code and show that there exists infinite number of HCMSs. Moreover, we show that for a perfect SW code with sufficiently long code length, the compression rates of different sources can be trade-off flexibly. Finally, we relax the construction procedure of HCMS and call the resulting code generalized HCMS. We prove that every perfect SW code for Hamming sources is equivalent to a generalized HCMS.

Abstract:We consider the problem of existence of perfect $2$-colorings in the Doob graphs $D(m,n)$ and $4$-ary Hamming graphs $H(n,4)$. We characterize all parameters for which multifold $1$-perfect code in $D(m,n)$ exists. Also, we prove that for any pair $(b,c)$ that satisfy standard conditions (Lloyd's and sphere-packing conditions) there is perfect $(b,c)$-coloring in Doob graphs and Hamming graphs if diameter of graph and $n$ are sufficiently large ($n$ not less than $0$, $1$ or $8$ for some cases). Also we obtain some completely regular codes with covering radius $2$.

On the existence of some completely regular codes in Hamming graphs

Abstract:We solve several first questions in the table of small parameters of completely regular (CR) codes in Hamming graphs $H(n,q)$. The most uplifting result is the existence of a $\{13,6,1;1,6,9\}$-CR code in $H(n,2)$, $n\ge 13$. We also establish the non-existence of a $\{11,4;3,6\}$-code and a $\{10,3;4,7\}$-code in $H(12,2)$ and $H(13,2)$. A partition of the complement of the quaternary Hamming code of length~$5$ into $4$-cliques is found, which can be used to construct completely regular codes with covering radius $1$ by known constructions. Additionally we discuss the parameters $\{24,21,10;1,4,12\}$ of a putative completely regular code in $H(24,2)$ and show the nonexistence of such a code in $H(8,4)$. Abstract:Studying binary perfect codes we show the existence of homogeneous nontransitive codes. Thus, as far as perfect codes are concerned, the propelinear codes are strictly contained in transitive codes, wheresas homogeneous codes form a strict subclass of transitive codes. In the work we deduce a necessary and sufficient condition for transitivity of perfect binary codes of rank one more than that of Hamming code. The paper is in Russian.

Abstract:A multifold $1$-perfect code ($1$-perfect code for list decoding) in any graph is a set $C$ of vertices such that every vertex of the graph is at distance not more than $1$ from exactly $\mu$ elements of $C$. In $q$-ary Hamming graphs, where $q$ is a prime power, we characterize all parameters of multifold $1$-perfect codes and all parameters of additive multifold $1$-perfect codes. In particular, we show that additive multifold $1$-perfect codes are related to special multiset generalizations of spreads, multispreads, and that multispreads of parameters corresponding to multifold $1$-perfect codes always exist.
