Abstract:We solve the problem of the classification of perfect quantum codes. We prove that the only nontrivial perfect quantum codes are those with the parameters . There exist no other nontrivial perfect quantum codes.

Abstract:A famous open problem in the theory of quantum error-correcting codes is whether or not the parameters of an impure quantum code can violate the quantum Hamming bound for pure quantum codes. We partially solve this problem. We demonstrate that there exists a threshold such that an arbitrary quantum code must obey the quantum Hamming bound whenever . We list some values of for small d and binary quantum codes.

In this paper, we classify all connected quintic Cayley graphs on abelian groups that admit a perfect code, and determine completely all perfect codes of such graphs.

Abstract:Perfect error-correcting codes allow for an optimal transmission of information while guaranteeing error correction. For this reason, proving their existence has been a classical problem in both pure mathematics and information theory. Indeed, the classification of the parameters of e-error correcting perfect codes over q-ary alphabets was a very active topic of research in the late 20th century. Consequently, all parameters of perfect e-error-correcting codes were found if e≥3, and it was conjectured that no perfect 2-error-correcting codes exist over any q-ary alphabet, where q>3. In the 1970s, this was proved for q a prime power, for q=2r3s and for only seven other values of q. Almost 50 years later, it is surprising to note that there have been no new results in this regard and the classification of 2-error-correcting codes over non-prime power alphabets remains an open problem. In this paper, we use techniques from the resolution of the generalised Ramanujan–Nagell equation and from modern computational number theory to show that perfect 2-error-correcting codes do not exist for 172 new values of q which are not prime powers, substantially increasing the values of q which are now classified. In addition, we prove that, for any fixed value of q, there can be at most finitely many perfect 2-error-correcting codes over an alphabet of size q.

Abstract:A subset <math>C</math> of the vertex set of a graph <math>Γ</math> is called a perfect code in <math>Γ</math> if every vertex of <math>Γ</math> is at distance no more than 1 to exactly one vertex of <math>C</math>. A subset <math>C</math> of a group <math>G</math> is called a perfect code of <math>G</math> if <math>C</math> is a perfect code in some Cayley graph of <math>G</math>. In this paper we give sufficient and necessary conditions for a subgroup <math>H</math> of a finite group <math>G</math> to be a perfect code of <math>G</math>. Based on this, we determine the finite groups that have no nontrivial subgroup as a perfect code, which answers a question by Ma, Walls, Wang and Zhou.

Abstract:Hybrid codes simultaneously encode both quantum and classical information into physical qubits. We give several general results about hybrid codes, most notably that the quantum codes comprising a genuine hybrid code must be impure and that hybrid codes can always detect more errors than comparable quantum codes. We also introduce the weight enumerators for general hybrid codes, which we then use to derive linear programming bounds. Finally, inspired by the construction of some families of nonadditive codes, we construct several infinite families of genuine hybrid codes with minimum distance two and three.

Abstract:This study investigates Hermitian rank-metric codes, a special class of rank-metric codes, focusing on perfect codes and on the analysis of their covering properties. Firstly, we establish bounds on the size of spheres in the space of Hermitian matrices and, as a consequence, we show that non-trivial perfect codes do not exist in the Hermitian case. We conclude the paper by examining their covering density.

Abstract:There have been various constructions of classical codes from polynomial valuations in literature [2], [7], [8], [10], [11]. In this paper, we present a construction of classical codes based on polynomial construction again. One of the features of this construction is that not only the classical codes arisen from the construction have good parameters, but also quantum codes with reasonably good parameters can be produced from these classical codes. In particular, some new quantum codes are constructed (see Examples V.5 and V.6).
On Nearly Perfect Covering Codes

Abstract:Nearly perfect packing codes are those codes that meet the Johnson upper bound on the size of error-correcting codes. This bound is an improvement to the sphere-packing bound. A related bound for covering codes is known as the van Wee bound. Codes that meet this bound will be called nearly perfect covering codes. In this paper, such codes with covering radius one will be considered. It will be proved that these codes can be partitioned into three families depending on the smallest distance between neighboring codewords. Some of the codes contained in these families will be completely characterized. Other properties of these codes will be considered too. Construction for codes for each such family will be presented, the weight distribution and the distance distribution of codes from these families are characterized. Finally, extended nearly perfect covering code will be considered and unexpected equivalence classes of codes of the three types will be defined based on the extended codes.

Abstract:We consider extended $1$-perfect codes in Hamming graphs $H(n,q)$. Such nontrivial codes are known only when $n=2^k$, $k\geq 1$, $q=2$, or $n=q+2$, $q=2^m$, $m\geq 1$. Recently, Bespalov proved nonexistence of extended $1$-perfect codes for $q=3$, $4$, $n>q+2$. In this work, we characterize all positive integers $n$, $r$ and prime $p$, for which there exist such a code in $H(n,p^r)$.

Geometrically Local Quantum and Classical Codes from Subdivision

Abstract:A geometrically local quantum code is an error correcting code situated within $\mathbb{R}^D$, where the checks only act on qubits within a fixed spatial distance. The main question is: What is the optimal dimension and distance for a geometrically local code? Recently, Portnoy made a significant breakthrough with codes achieving optimal dimension and distance up to polylogs. However, the construction invokes a somewhat advanced mathematical result that involves lifting a chain complex to a manifold. This paper bypasses this step and streamlines the construction by noticing that a family of good quantum low-density parity-check codes, balanced product codes, naturally carries a two-dimensional structure. Together with a new embedding result that will be shown elsewhere, this quantum code achieves the optimal dimension and distance in all dimensions. In addition, we show that the code has an optimal energy barrier. We also discuss similar results for classical codes.

Abstract:A perfect code in a graph is an independent set of the graph such that every vertex outside the set is adjacent to exactly one vertex in the set. A circulant graph is a Cayley graph of a cyclic group. In this paper we study perfect codes in circulant graphs of degree $p^l - 1$, where $p$ is a prime and $l \ge 1$. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for such a circulant graph to admit perfect codes, give a construction of all such circulant graphs which admit perfect codes, and prove a lower bound on the number of distinct perfect codes in such a circulant graph. This extends known results for the case $l=1$ and provides insight on the general problem on the existence and structure of perfect codes in circulant graphs.

Abstract:In this note we show that the weight enumerators of a real quantum error correcting code with $ X $ and $ Z $ exactly transversal must satisfy certain identities. One consequence of these identities is that if the code is error detecting then it is automatically error correcting for free; implying a relationship between transversality and code distance.

Abstract:It is well-known that pure quantum error correcting codes (QECCs) are constrained by a quantum version of the Hamming bound. Whether impure codes also obey such a bound, however, remains a long-standing question with practical implications for the efficacy of QECCs. We employ a combination of previously derived bounds on QECCs to demonstrate that a subset of all codes must obey the quantum Hamming bound. Specifically, we combine an analytical bound due to Rains with a numerical bound due to Li and Xing to show that no ((n,k,d < 127)) code can violate the quantum Hamming bound.

Equivalence Classes of Quantum Error-Correcting Codes

Abstract:Quantum error-correcting codes (QECC's) are needed to combat the inherent noise affecting quantum processes. Using ZX calculus, we represent QECC's in a form called a ZX diagram, consisting of a tensor network. In this paper, we present canonical forms for CSS codes and CSS states (which are CSS codes with 0 inputs), and we show the resulting canonical forms for the toric code and certain surface codes. Next, we introduce the notion of prime code diagrams, ZX diagrams of codes that have a single connected component with the property that no sequence of rewrite rules can split such a diagram into two connected components. We also show the Fundamental Theorem of Clifford Codes, proving the existence and uniqueness of the prime decomposition of Clifford codes. Next, we tabulate equivalence classes of ZX diagrams under a different definition of equivalence that allows output permutations and any local operations on the outputs. Possible representatives of these equivalence classes are analyzed. This work expands on previous works in exploring the canonical forms of QECC's in their ZX diagram representations.

Abstract:A perfect code in a graph $\Gamma$ is a subset $C$ of $V(\Gamma)$ such that no two vertices in $C$ are adjacent and every vertex in $V(\Gamma)\setminus C$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex in $C$. Let $G$ be a finite group and $C$ a subset of $G$. Then $C$ is said to be a perfect code of $G$ if there exists a Cayley graph of $G$ admiting $C$ as a perfect code. It is proved that a subgroup $H$ of $G$ is a perfect code of $G$ if and only if a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $H$ is a perfect code of $G$. This result provides a way to simplify the study of subgroup perfect codes of general groups to the study of subgroup perfect codes of $2$-groups. As an application, a criterion for determining subgroup perfect codes of projective special linear groups $\mathrm{PSL}(2,q)$ is given.

Quotient Space Quantum Codes

Abstract:Additive codes and some nonadditive codes use the single and multiple invariant subspaces of the stabilizer G, respectively, to construct quantum codes, so the selection of the invariant subspaces is a key problem. In this paper, I provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for this problem and, establish the quotient space codes to construct quantum codes. These new codes unify additive codes and codeword stabilized codes and can transmit classical codewords. Actually, I give an alternative approach to constructing union stabilizer codes, which is different from that of Markus Grassl and Martin Roetteler, and which is easier to deal with degenerate codes. I also present new bounds for quantum codes and provide a simple proof of the quantum Singleton bound. The quotient space approach provides a concise and clear mathematical framework for the study of quantum error-correcting codes.
