Abstract:A cooperative platform called Cova is presented, which aims to uniformly model a wide range of cooperation scenarios and to reduce the groupware design and development work. To achieve these goals, Cova provides two facilities, namely a specification language for developers to describe various cooperation modes uniformly and a run-time system that provides some generalpurposed services guaranteeing the semantics specified. With these facilities, the developers can then concentrate on the application specific functions rather than the control mechanisms. Therefore, the development efficiency is promoted. This paper details the design and implementation issues of the platform including the model and the specification language, platform architecture, transaction management, service integration and so on. Application development with Cova platform is also covered.

Abstract:Nowadays it has been widely recognized that traditional transaction models with (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation and Durability) properties generally are not applicable to cooperative applications. To solve this problem, a new transaction model called CovaTM is proposed. CovaTM views one execution of a cooperative process as a transaction with its sub-transactions corresponding to activities. It provides sophisticated but flexible control over cooperative process and relaxes the restrictions on atomicity and isolation. Therefore, it can meet the requirements of cooperative applications well. This paper details the implementation issues of CovaTM including how to construct a transaction according to the cooperative process description as well as the mechanism and algorithm adopted at runtime.

Though many advanced transaction models have been proposed to address the problems, they are too database-centered or too rigid to be useful in real environments. This paper presents a new transaction model named CovaTM, which provides sophisticated but flexible control over cooperative process as well as support for error recovery and exception handling. The most distinguished feature of this model is that user intervention is explicitly introduced into transaction processing. This paper details the features and structural elements of this model. An example is also given to illustrate how it works in real world settings.
Design, Implementation of the Parallel C Language Based on C/S Mode in Distributed Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we designed Parallel C Language, a kind of parallel programming Language, to implement parallel computing in distributed systems. It is to add some special identification statements on ANSI C Language. The parallel computing is based on C/S mode, incorporating multithread and RPC(remote procedure call). Multithread is used to cut tasks and concurrent the subtasks, and RPC is used to deploy and execute the subtasks on remote server nodes. The allocation of remote server nodes is dependent on load balancing mechanism. We also implemented the Pre-compiler of this Parallel C Language program, which parses the Parallel C Language program into several RPC application files. The other RPC application files are constructed by RPCGEN. The result of test shows that using this Parallel C Language to program in distributed systems reduces the codes size and makes full use of the system resources and improves efficiency.

Abstract:The successful traditional transaction model with ACID properties, Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation and Durability, generally is not applicable to cooperative applications. To solve this problem, this paper propose a new transaction model called CovaTM. CovaTM views one execution of a cooperative process as a transaction with its sub-transactions corresponding to activities. It provides sophisticated but flexible control over cooperative process by EGA rules and relaxes the restrictions on atomicity and isolation, which are considered to be the main factors causing ACID transaction inappropriate for cooperative environments. This paper details the implementation issues of CovaTM including how to construct a transaction according to the cooperative process description as well as the mechanism and algorithm adopted at runtime. Also comparisons are presented between CovaTM and other advanced or extended transaction models.
A Cova-based Platform for Groupware Development

Abstract:As the tool to support cooperation among people, groupware has gained great success. However, there exist many problems with the development of groupware, such as low efficiency and duplicated work, to name a few. Recently it has been widely accepted that a software development environment capable of providing some forms of general-purpose services that ease developers' endeavors should be developed. The paper introduces a Cova-based platform for groupware development, which allows developers to compose cooperative applications quickly by integrating various services with the ones provided by the platform. The platform architecture as well as its interfaces is described. Issues such as transaction support and security are also covered.

Abstract:AbstractModelling collaborative processes is a complex task because it may involve many people with different backgrounds, each having their own focuses and interests. To get a perfect process description, a mechanism must be provided to support the cooperation among these people. It is in this sense that we declare that process modelling by itself is a collaborative process, which is neglected in existing modelling tools. This paper summarises the characters of this special process, then presents the policies needed to support the efficient cooperative modelling of processes so that perfect process descriptions can be produced. These policies are implemented in CovaModeler, which is a multi-user tool for Cova-based process collaborative modelling.

Abstract:It has now been, widely recognized that a CSCW platform will be critical to the success of CSCW research, development and application. A CSCW platform tries to ease developer work in developing a cooperative application by providing some types of general-purpose cooperation support services. However current CSCW platforms lack the power to support uniformly the development of a full spectrum of cooperative applications. This paper summarizes some experiences and considerations in the design and implementation of a general-purpose CSCW platform named Dicse. The basic idea is to provide developers with the Cova model, with which the static and dynamic properties of data objects and the cooperation control policies can be described, and a interpreting system, which interprets the description and conducts the required cooperative control. In this way, cooperative services can be provided, while the implementation details are completely hidden from developers. We will discuss the Cova model, the services provided how they are implemented, and how they can be used by developers.

Abstract:OPEN is an ontology-based programming framework for rapid prototyping, sharing, and personalization of context-aware applications. Unlike previous systems that provide programming support for single group of users, OPEN provides different programming support for users with diverse technical skills. According to the programming requirements of different users, several cooperation patterns are identified, and the mechanisms to facilitate resource sharing and reuse are built into the framework. Three corresponding programming modes are elaborated by showing how a context-aware game has been developed with the support of the OPEN framework, and the usability of our system is validated through an initial user study.

Abstract:We present Coevo, an online platform that allows both humans and artificial agents to design shapes that solve different tasks. Our goal is to explore common shared design tools that can be used by humans and artificial agents in a context of creation. This approach can provide a better knowledge transfer and interaction with artificial agents since a common language of design is defined. In this paper, we outline the main components of this platform and discuss the definition of a human-centered language to enhance human-AI collaboration in co-creation scenarios.

Abstract:Although they are being exploited by businesses in a variety of industries, current workflow systems are considered to be too rigid. However, it is difficult to construct a new workflow system from scratch, due to its complexity. On the other hand, meta-groupware is attracting more and more attention, in that it can be used to compose sophisticated systems. In this paper, we show how to implement a workflow management system (WfMS) by using Cova, a meta-groupware system developed at Tsinghua University. Problems, including process design, run-time synchronous support and reliability, are addressed. It is efficient as well as easy to construct a WfMS based on meta-groupware. In addition, a system developed in this way presents many desired features, such as flexibility, reliability, and so on

Abstract:In cooperative authoring, asynchronous cooperation and implicit cooperation are dominant processes with synchronous and explicit cooperation as subordinate processes. A cooperative authoring system is supposed to provide comprehensive support for all types of cooperation. Distributed computing technologies were used to develope a distributed cooperative authoring (DCA) system which incorporates multiple cooperation tools intended for end users and common cooperation function services for developers to facilitate the development of new applications and the integration of existing applications. Specialized cooperative authoring systems can be built by integrating domain specific authoring tools into DCA, resulting in shortened development cycles, reduced cost, and a reduced gap between system generality and customers' special needs.

Abstract:The emergence of e-commerce (EC) brings great challenges to both research community and industries. As an enabling technology, workflow is viewed as a good basis for EC solutions due to its immense power in dealing with complex tasks and integration of heterogeneous resources. However, there are many issues with existing workflow systems such as rigid process definition, lack of interoperability, limited support of transaction, to name a few. This paper details how to support EC applications by extending Cova, a meta-groupware with process management ability, to support Web services. Based on the ability of run-time process adjustment provided by Cova, the dynamics of EC applications can be well addressed, while the introduction of Web services facilitates the interaction between different organizations without violating their autonomy.

Abstract:While not yet in commercial existence, quantum computers have the ability to solve certain classes of problems that are not efficiently solvable on existing Turing Machine based (classical) computers. For quantum computers to be of use, methods of programming them must exist. Proposals exist for programming quantum computers, but all of the existing ones suffer from flaws that make them impractical in commercial software development environments. Cove is a framework for programming quantum computers that extends existing classical languages to allow for quantum computation, thus providing a quantum computing toolkit for commercial software developers. Since the target users of Cove are commercial developers, it is an object oriented framework that can be used by multiple languages and also places emphasis on complete documentation. The focus of Cove is not so much on the software product, but on the fundamental concepts that make quantum computing practical for common developers.

The language is upward-compatible to C++, and its basic building block is process, a class with its own thread of control. Abstract:Nowadays business process management (BPM) receives more and more attention and is considered as the "next step" after the workflow wave of the 1990s. Due to the complexity and divergence of business processes, many challenges need to be solved when developing a business process management system (BPMS). In this paper, a system based on Cova, a meta-groupware, is proposed to support business processes. The paper shows how the functionality of Cova is extended with the new emerging Web technologies and how unstructured collaboration is supported via instant messaging, conference service and agent technology. The proposed approach can be used as a reference when improving existing systems or developing new solutions to support business processes.

Abstract:The availability of high performance network brings up numerous interactive distributed cooperative applications. Most of these cooperative applications are oriented a certain domain, and the system or part of its modules are difficult to be reused in any other application scenarios. However, after analyzing numerous cooperative applications, we found that these systems contain some common modules with very similar functions. Obviously, duplicated development of these modules leads to a mass of unnecessary costs. So, in this paper we have proposed a universal middleware framework called Co Services which provides these commons modules for new cooperative applications. To make the framework adaptive to heterogeneous scenarios, we have defined a set of interfaces using web service so that the framework can be compatible with multiple kinds of client platforms. Besides, we have built a uniform data sharing model which can be used to represent different types of data and integrate various data sources. In addition, to satisfy divers need for concurrency control in different situations, we have designed a configurable concurrency control algorithm which can be customized by configuration. Last, we have developed two applications based on Co Services to validate the effectiveness of the framework.
