Abstract:In order to determine the capacity of composite foundation,the computational model for composite foundation reinforced by stone columns is founded according to load transfer characteristics and failure pattern.The expression of pile-soil stress ratio considering lateral bulging deformation is obtained according to spatial axisymmetric elastic theory and basic assumptions,which includes deformation compatibility and the equilibrium of radial stress on the interface between stone column and soil.The calculation method of the critical edge load and the critical load of composite foundations reinforced by stone columns is provided by the application of Mohr-Coulomb's failure criterion to soil between stone columns.The critical load is approximate to the results of the classical methods for ultimate capacity of composite foundation.
Numerical analysis on the performance of a cushioned foundation with a mixture of both rigid and flexible piles

Abstract:The composite foundation supported by piles with various stiffness is a recently developed ground improvement method for resisting vertical load in the thick soft soils. In this composite foundation system, the flexible piles are designed to strengthen shallow soft soil, while the rigid piles are used to reduce settlement of the foundation system. A flexible cushion below the rigid foundation cap is used to redistribute the external load and to adjust stress levels acting on the piles and surrounding soils. The soft soil underneath the cushion can also resist a portion of the applied load. As a result, the composite foundation system can resist much higher load with less settlement. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses are conducted to investigate the performance of the cushioned composite foundation system with a combination of both rigid and flexible piles. The effects of several factors, such as, stiffness of the flexible pile, length of rigid pile, stiffness of cushion, that might affect the consolidation behavior of the composite foundation are studied by using the commercial software ABAQUS. The numerical investigation results indicate that there are optimized values existed among these factors. The loading induced pore pressure in the soft subsoil has minimal influence on the stiffness of flexible piles. Whereas, the settlement of composite foundation can be adjusted by changing the length of rigid piles. Copyright ASCE 2009.
In-situ test of bearing capacity behavior of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles

Abstract:In-situ tests were carried out in Wenzhou in order to study the stress distribution of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles under long-term load. Results show that the stress of composite foundation is related with the superstructure rigidity. When the superstructure floor is low, loads are undertaken mostly by soil; when the superstructure floor is high, the stress concentration happens on the top of rigid pile and flexible pile. The pile stress variation rule with floor increment is different at different spots and cushion can alleviate the stress difference. The load sharing ratio of rigid pile in the composite foundation without cushion is larger than that in the composite foundation with cushion.

Abstract:In order to study pile-soil interaction of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles,static load test of composite foundation with one cast-inplace pile and four cement mixing piles under stripe foundation is carried out in Wenzhou area.On the basis of monitoring data,this paper analyses load bearing capacity and deformation under the application of load.The Q-s curve variation of composite foundation is slow.Soil pressure distribution under stripe foundation shows the shape of being large in middle part and small at the edge.The soil stress concentration occurs at the plane of pile tip.There are negative friction force at rigid pile top and flexible pile top.Furthermore,the degree of bearing capacity display on rigid pile is 0.97,while that on flexible pile is 0.73 and that on soil is 0.99.

Abstract:A composite foundation that incorporates rigid and flexible piles is a new type of composite foundation. In order to investigate the pile-soil interaction of this composite foundation, a static load test of the composite foundation, consisting of one rigid pile and four flexible piles supporting a stripe foundation, was done in Wenzhou, China. The load transfer behavior was observed by embedding earth pressure cells, strain meters and stress meters beneath the bearing plate at different locations. Variation and rules of load sharing among the rigid pile, flexible piles and soil, as well as, stress distribution, were analyzed in the process of load application. The experimental results clearly indicated that placing a cushion beneath the bearing plate reduced stress concentration on the top of rigid pile and made the soil and flexible pile share load in the initial load stage, thus improved the performance of the composite foundation system. The load transfer mechanism of rigid pile and flexible pile in a composite foundation system is different from a normal pile system or a normal soil cement mix pile system. Copyright ASCE 2006.

Abstract:Composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles under strip foundation is analyzed by means of finite element method on the basis of field test. The influential factors including cushion, cap, rigid pile and flexible pile on deformation characteristics of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles are studied systematically. The results indicate composite foundation settlement reduction along with cushion thickness reduction and module increment, cap thickness increment is advantageous to differential settlement reduction, rigid pile is main component to control settlement; flexible pile increment can reduce differential settlement. These conclusions are helpful for optimum design.

Abstract:Rigid-flexible-pile composite foundations are a newly developed method for resisting vertical load in deep soft soil. Flexible piles are used to strengthen shallow soft soil, and rigid piles are used to reduce settlement of the foundation. A cushion below the foundation caps is used to redistribute and adjust stresses on the piles and subsoil. The soft soil can also share part of the applied load in the foundation system. This enables the rigid-flexible-pile composite foundation to resist much larger load with less settlement. This paper examines the performance of such a foundation under vertical load. The results show that the stress and load-sharing ratio of the two kinds of pile and subsoil varies with the applied loading, but most of the applied load is shared by the rigid and flexible piles. Settlement of the composite foundation is controlled well, and can satisfy the performance requirements of buildings on deep soft soil.

Abstract:Numerical simulation model was established with FLAC3D to calculate the stress of pile and soil and the settlement of composite foundation with different modulus of cushion,bearing stratum and pile.The rules of the effect of material modulus upon cement-soil pile composite foundation have been obtained.The results show that the bearing capacity of soil between piles is affected by the material and modulus of cushion,so graded joint sand is appropriate for cushion,and the range of cushion modulus is from 20MPa to 50 MPa.The bearing capacity of composite foundation can be increased and the settlement of the composite foundation can be reduced if the modulus of bearing stratum is increased,so the bottom of pile should be located in the stratum with higher modulus.The strength of bearing stratum has no notable effect on the bearing capacity and the settlement of composite foundation except soft soil.The bearing capacity of composite foundation can be increased and the settlement of the composite foundation can be reduced effectively if the modulus of pile is increased with a certain range.Quite high modulus of pile is not used in cement-soil pile composite foundation,and the reasonable range of it is from 200MPa to 400 MPa.

Abstract:A simplified planar model for geosynthetics reinforced composite foundation under large-scale loading was established with a new consolidation analysis. The cushion was modeled by modified Pasternak model and the reaction of pile and subsoil was modeled by Winkler model. The effect of geosynthetics layer was directly considered as an elastic cable and the subsoil was divided into numerous columns with only vertical drainage. The solution was obtained by a finite difference based iterative scheme. The feasibility of the model was demonstrated by a case study. Then a parameter study was executed to analyze the effect of several influential factors. The results showed that there is a critical pile –to-pitch ratio that makes the increase of the stiffness of the geosynthetic material the most conducive to deformation control.
Study of Influence of Cushion on Settlement of Cement-Soil Mixing Pile Composite Foundation

Abstract:The influence of cushion thickness on the settlement of cement-soil mixing pile composite foundation was studied by the static load tests and numerical simulation. The static load tests of natural foundation and four cement-soil mixing pile composite foundations in which the cushion thickness was different were carried out for the silt soil in Zhuhai area. The settlement-tubes and magnetic rings were pre-buried in the foundation. And the probe with scale was used to detect the positions of the magnetic rings and obtain the data of the layered settlements. According to these experimental data of composite foundation for four cement-soil mixing piles,the settlement law was analyzed; and layered settlements of piles and soil in different composite foundation were calculated by numerical calculation. The comparison between the different composite foundation shows that the settlement of pile could be reduced by the cushion,but the thickness of cushion has a significant influence on the supporting capacity of composite foundation—a much thicker cushion could weaken the supporting capacity and increase the settlement of composite foundation. For choosing the optimal thickness of cushion,the geological condition was suggested to be considered except for the supporting capacity and settlement of composite foundation. The cushion thickness could be from 20 cm to 40 cm—the higher value is selected when the silt layer is below the middle sector of pile,conversely the lower value is selected.
Influences of different replacement ratios on composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles

Abstract:In order to study the influence of pile replacement ratio on the performance of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles, lots of static load tests were carried out in Wenzhou. Pressure cells beneath bearing plate were monitored in the static load test. On basis of test results, the composite foundation settlement with different replacement ratios was investigated, and the influences of different replacement ratio on stress, pile-soil stress ratio and pile-soil load sharing ratio were analyzed. Test results indicate that the rigid pile replacement ratio influences settlement characteristics largely, and the settlement is reduced obviously with the increment of rigid pile replacement. Rigid pile plays an important role in the load bearing in composite foundation. The deformation module is reduced with reduction of rigid pile replacement ratio. When the pile replacement ratio is higher, the rigid pile bearing capacity display is smaller, the flexible pile bearing capacity display is bigger, and the soil bearing capacity display is smaller.

Abstract:The load transfer mechanism and deformation characteristics of cast-in-place piles in composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles are different from that in free state. Working property of pile is complex due to interaction between rigid pile, flexible pile and soil. Static load tests of the same pile under different situation are carried out in Wenzhou. On the basis of monitoring data in the process of static load test, settlement characteristics, load transfer mechanism and compression of pile shaft are analyzed; the conclusions can benefit to engineering design and construction.

Abstract:This paper introduces a successful application of the composite foundation with low-strength-concrete pile and cement-mixed pile in Ouhai road of Wenzhou to alleviate bridge-head jump.Through pressure metre under embankment,the magnitude of pile-soil stress ratio and its variation with the time are measured,and the variation of pile-soil load share ratio with time is analyzed.Furthermore,the measured results in site show that the measured pilesoil stress ratio under flexible foundation is much less than that under rigid foundation.The conclusion can provide valuable preference for the design of the composite ground under embankment.

Abstract:A model of 6×6 piles rigid-soft-pile foundation was established to analyze coordinative working performance of composite pile foundation with the three-dimensional FEM.When the ratio of the rigid-soft -pile-number and loading level becomes, the changing rule of loading on the top of the piles and strain-stress in the foundation was researched.If the rigid-soft-piles-number ratio is constant and the piles' loading is lower than their ultimate loading capacity,under different loading levels,the rigid-soft-pile-loading ratio is nearly invariable.Under the same loading level,there is economical ratio (lower than 40 %) of the rigid-total-piles-number.When the rigid-total-pile-number ratio is lower than it,the stress in superficial layer reduces effectively with the number of rigid piles increased.And the effect of decreased-settlement is also obvious.When the rigid-total-pile-number ratio is higher than it,increased the number of rigid piles reduces the stress and strain in the foundation un-apparently.

Abstract:The engineering characteristics of composite foundation with rigid-flexible and long-short piles are studied. By using the finite element method, the effects of cushion modulus, cushion thickness, short pile modulus, and long pile length on the total settlement of composite foundation, the stress ratio of long-short pile, and the axial stress of long-short pile are discussed respectively. The results show that the engineering characteristics of composite foundation can become more reasonable by optimizing material parameters; and long pile can effectively reduce settlement of composite foundation. Based on the in-situ measurement of pressures in soil and piles of a practical engineering in Wenzhou City, stress ratio of pile to soil and pressures in the process of construction are analyzed. Some conclusions are provided as references for future design and application of this kind of composite foundation.

Abstract:To simulate the stress migration in local damage and cracking of piles, ABAQUS software was used to establish a 3-D analytical model of composite foundation improved by rigid piles with concrete damage plasticity model. Stress and failure mechanism of piles were studied in the process of embankment reclamation and loading. The results show that concrete damage model has good performances in predicting the reduction of pill stiffness and redistribution of internal forces; the linear elastic model yielded higher moment and lower displacement; Unlike ultimate moment under pure bending, the maximum moment in pile depends on its location with respect to the embankment; When the embankment is approaching failure, piles outside the shoulder tend to subject to stretch-bending or compression-bending failure while piles close to the embankment center mainly bear vertical pressure; pile failure could hardly occur in the first place as it is usually caused by failure of embankment slope; Shear failure unlikely occur in rigid piles.

Abstract:A newly developed composite foundation technique is used in the practical project of soft soil foundation treatment. This kind of composite foundation is made up of two types piles, the rigid one is concrete pile, and the flexible one is mixed-in-place cement pile. The design ideas of the composite foundation are proposed. In order to determine the bearing capacity of composite foundation, the in-site loading tests of an important project were carried out; and the major engineering characteristics of the composite foundation are studied. The stress ratio and the load ratio of pile to soil in the process of loading are analyzed carefully. The results of tests indicate that the rigid pile, the flexible pile and soil can interact on each other very well; and their bearing capacities can be developed reasonably.

Abstract:The technology of the composite ground under a flexible foundation have been widely used in transportation, water conservancy and other departments, yet its theory of characterizing the behavior of the composite ground needs to be further researched. A simplified analytical model is presented, considering the above four parts which includes the flexible foundation, the cushion, the composite ground, and the underlying soils as an interactive system, allowing for the relative movement between piles and soils, and assuming different settlement of foundation soil at the same elevation. The force equilibriums of a typical element are established. And then, according to the compatibility of stress and deformation on the interfaces between these four components, the formulas on settlement and stress ratio of pile-soil, which is used to characterize the behavior of the composite ground, are derived.
FEM Analysis and Design of Long Short Pile Composite Foundation

Abstract:A practical case of the long short pile composite foundation is presented,in which the long and short piles are made of reinforced concrete and cement soil respectively.The stress distribution and displacement of the long short pile composite foundation、whole long pile composite foundation、whole short pile composite foundation and nature foundation under the same geological condition have been calculated and compared by FEM. The results show that by use of the long short pile composite foundation, the whole settlement is reduced effectively and the settlement difference of foundation slab is cut down. Long pile makes shallow soil stress reducing and deeper soil displacement falling. A design method of the long short pile composite foundation is introduced. After comparing the calculated value of the settlement with the actual measurement , it is proved that the design method is available.

Abstract:CFMPs (cement and fly ash mixing piles) are used to reinforce fly ash foundation to solve the problem of a large amount of fly ash accumulation in coastal areas. CFMP-fly ash composite foundation is used as the foundation of coastal and coastal engineering. Through the indoor model test, the bearing characteristics and load transfer mechanism of CFMP-fly ash composite foundation under wave load were investigated. The results show that with the increase of wave load, the horizontal resistance of the fly ash stratum increases gradually, the soil resistance moves down, and the level of resistance shows nonlinear characteristics. The pile bending moment, pile displacement, and horizontal resistance of the CFMP composite foundation are concentrated in the upper pile and fly ash stratum, which can improve the ability of the composite foundation to resist horizontal load by improving the physical and mechanical properties of the upper fly ash stratum. Through the calculation of the load–displacement curve, it is found that the measured displacement value is closer to that obtained using the p – y curve method (a method for solving nonlinear lateral resistance of piles). The hysteretic curve area of cyclic loading decreases with the increase of cyclic number. The accumulation of elastoplastic deformation of pile shows that the properties of fly ash gradually change to elastic stage, cyclic loading can reduce the horizontal deformation modulus of composite foundation CFMP caused pile—fly ash system of weakening, in peak load reaches level under the critical state displacement curve showed a trend of the rapid growth of nonlinear, cyclic cumulative failure occurs, and the cyclic load limit state is reached, which affects the service performance of the whole structure.
