Abstract:Functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) opens a versatile avenue for the preparation of soluble CNTs and novel CNT-based hybrid nanomaterials and nanodevices. in this work, we present a multifunctional reaction platform based on CNTs, poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT-PGMA). The reaction platform of MWNT-g-PGMA was achieved by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The polymerization kinetics was investigated. The epoxy groups of MWNT-g-PGMA call be converted into azido groups by reaction with NaN(3). The "click" reaction between azido groups and alkyne modified coumarin 343 affords luminescent CNTs. The epoxy groups can also be readily converted into hydroxyl and amino groups in the presence of hydrochloric acid and 1,2-ethylenediamine, respectively. Further reaction of the hydroxyl groups with succinic anhydride results in the formation of multicarboxylic acid polymer-functionalized CNTs. The chemical structure, morphology and the grafted quantities of epoxy, hydroxyl, amino and carboxylic acid groups functionalized MWNTs were determined by FTIR, (1)H NMR, SEM, TEM and TGA measurements. Magnetic CNTs and silver nanocrystals-decorated CNTs were fabricated through subsequent assembly of magnetic nanoparticles (e.g., Fe(3)O(4)) and in situ reduction of Ag(+) in aqueous Solution using the amino and carboxylic groups functionalized CNTs as templates, respectively.
