Abstract:By using an outdoor small scale manipulating experiment, the effects of available soil space on the diversity-productivity relationship of species and the possible mechanisms controlling this relationship were tested. The results show that monoculture of individual species varies greatly in their productivity in different soil spaces, indicating that soil space has important effects on the productivity of different species.Available soil space also has important effect on the diversity-productivity relationship.Under the condition of a small space, the relationship between species diversity and productivity shows a unimodel pattern. And as the soil space increases, the relationship between species diversity and productivity shows a positive linear pattern. These suggest that with the increasing of soil space, the diversity effects are strengthened.Relative yield total calculation indicates that under the small space conditions, the relationship between species diversity and complementary effects also show a unimodel pattern, demonstrating that under the small space conditions, resource complemetary use in mixtures with higher diversity is limited. In a large soil space, however, the relationship between species diversity and complementary effects shows a significant positive linear pattern, suggesting that the increase of soil space benefits resource complementary use in mixtures with higher species diversity. Our results provide support for.a linear increase of the magnitude of positive biodiversity effects on productivity with increasing available soil space, and this increase is mainly caused by complementary effects between species in the large soil space.
