Abstract:Ongoing challenges in computing the spectrum of hadronic resonances and shallow bound-states from lattice QCD are reviewed. Since such states are identified as poles in the scattering matrix, nearby non-analyticities must be treated to analytically continue to complex center-of-mass energies. Significant lattice spacing effects have also been observed in some channels, necessitating a continuum limit. Recent achievements are also highlighted, including lattice investigations of states in the charm region, baryon-baryon scattering, and the first coupled channel meson-baryon amplitude in the $\Lambda(1405)$ channel.

Abstract:Despite quantum chromodynamics (QCD) being established as the theory of the strong interaction and its many successes since then, significant challenges in our understanding of hadron physics remain. The lack of a full understanding for how the observed hadrons arise from the quark and gluon degrees of freedom which define QCD represents a real challenge in connecting the theory to experiment. In particular, the rich spectrum of hadrons marks a significant gap in our understanding, as no model can currently explain all observed hadrons and QCD itself has only been used to study a small subset of the full spectrum. The significant hurdle for using QCD directly is due to the non-perturbative nature of the theory at low energies, requiring methods like lattice QCD. Here, the spectrum of hadrons and how it relates to few-body dynamics is reviewed, with a focus on state-of-the-art methods for their study through lattice QCD.

Abstract:Over the recent years, the relatively young field of quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories - aiming at implementing simulators of gauge theories with quantum platforms, has gone through a rapid development process. It is now of interest not only to people in the quantum information and technology community, but also seen as a valid tool for tackling hard, nonperturbative gauge theory physics by more and more particle and nuclear physicists. Along the theoretical progress, nowadays more and more experiments which actually implement such simulators are being reported, manifesting beautiful results, but mostly on $1+1$ dimensional physics. In this paper, we review the essential ingredients and requirements of lattice gauge theories in more dimensions, discuss their meanings, the challenges they impose and how they could be dealt with, potentially, aiming at the next steps of this field towards simulating challenging physical problems.

Abstract:Anchoring our understanding of low-energy nuclear and hadronic physics to the fundamental theory of strong interactions, QCD, remains and outstanding challenge for physicists. Lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory are the most powerful theoretical tools we have at our disposal to make this connection. These tools share a symbiotic relationship as chiral perturbation theory is used to understand the light quark mass dependence of observables, while lattice QCD is used to determine the values of the unknown operator coefficients appearing in the chiral Lagrangian. In this talk, I review our present understanding of select single baryon properties from lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory, highlighting some of the challenges and discussing some unresolved puzzles.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. Simulation of quantum field theories and fundamental interactions is one of the most challenging tasks in modern particle physics. Classical computers generally fail to reproduce accurate results when it comes to strongly coupled theories such as QCD. Recent developments in quantum technologies open up the possibility of simulating such physical regimes by using quantum computers. In this paper, we study the quantum resource related to the simulability of a quantum theory, i.e. non-stabilizerness for Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT) with discrete symmetry gauge groups. We show that enforcing gauge constraints for [math] LGTs has no cost in terms of this resource and discuss the relation between non-abelianity of the gauge group with the average non-stabilizerness of the gauge invariant Hilbert space.

Abstract:Supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions have taught us many important physics lessons. These can both inform and be informed by future work on the lattice. I focus on three issues: the properties of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and its relation to the non-supersymmetric case; the properties of gauge theories with matter and their relation to real QCD; and, briefly, the recent discovery that gauge theories and string theories are more deeply connected than ever previously realized. Specific questions for lattice gauge theorists to consider are raised in the context of the first two topics.

Abstract:The bulk of this paper centers around the tension between confinement and freedom in QCD. I discuss how it can be understood heuristically as a manifestation of self-adhesive glue and how it fits within the larger contexts of energy-time uncertainty and $\textit{real virtuality}$. I discuss the possible emergence of $\textit{treeons}$ as a tangible ingredient of (at least) pure gluon $SU(3)$. I propose $\textit{flux channeling}$ as a method to address that and allied questions about triality flux numerically, and indicate how to implement it for electric and magnetic flux in material systems. That bulk is framed with broad-stroke, necessarily selective sketches of the past and possible future of strong interaction physics. At the end, I've added an expression of gratitude for my formative experience at the Erice school, in 1973.

Abstract:The N*-program provides a path to understanding the essentially-nonperturbative fundamentals at the heart of the Standard Model: confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. Relating this data to QCD's basic degrees-of-freedom is a key challenge for theory. In tackling it, one steps immediately into the domain of relativistic quantum field theory where within the key phenomena can only be understood via nonperturbative methods. No one tool is yet fully equal to the challenge. Nonetheless, the last few years have seen significant progress in QCD-based theory, and the reaction models necessary to bridge the gap between that theory and experiment.

Abstract:This presentation briefly addresses three basic issues of low-energy QCD: first, whether the Nambu-Goldstone scenario of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is well established; secondly, whether there is a dynamical entanglement of the chiral and deconfinement crossover transitions in QCD; and thirdly, what is the status of knowledge about the phase diagram of QCD at low temperature and non-zero baryon density. These three topics were injected as key words into a panel discussion at the Schladming school on Challenges in QCD. The following exposition reflects the style and character of the discussions, with no claim of completeness.

Abstract:By trapping cold polarizable atoms in periodic potentials created by crossed laser beams, it is now possible to experimentally create "clean" lattice systems. Experimentalists have successfully engineered local and nearest-neighbor interactions that approximately recreate Hubbard-like models on table tops. I discuss the possibility of using this new technology in the context of lattice gauge theory and in particular, relativistic dispersion relations, flavor symmetry, functional derivatives and emerging local gauge symmetry.

A Multiple-Grid-Patch Evolution Scheme for 3-D Black Hole Excision

Abstract:When using black hole excision to numerically evolve a fully generic black hole spacetime, most 3-D 3+1 codes use an $xyz$-topology (spatial) grid. In such a grid, an $r = \constant$ excision surface must be approximated by an irregular and non-smooth "staircase-shaped" excision grid boundary, which may introduce numerical instabilities into the evolution. In this paper I describe an alternate scheme, which uses multiple grid patches, each with topology $\{r \times ({\rm angular coordinates})\}$, to cover the slice outside the $r = \constant$ excision surface. The excision grid boundary is now smooth, so the evolution should be less prone to instabilities. With 4th order finite differencing, this code evolves Kerr initial data to ${\sim} 60M$ using the ADM equations; I'm currently implementing the BSSN equations in it in the hope that this will improve the stability.
