Abstract:Based on the 0.49 million tons scale methanol to propylene (MTP ) process, the technology combinations of high temperature methanol to dimethyl ether (MTD)and front-end debutanization separation process,high temperature MTD and front-end depropanization separation process,low temperature MTD and front-end debutanization separation process,low temperature MTD and front-end depropanization separation process were studied.In the four combinations,the combination of low temperature MTD and front-end depropanization separation has the lowest energy consumption (502 MW),the lowest energy cost (6.22×10 8 RMB yuan/a),the lowest CO2 emissions(2.023 × 10 9 kg/a ) and the highest energy efficiency (0.7107 ), thus, it is most competitive.The energy consumption ratio of product separation unit exceeded 50%,so that the energy conservation and improvement of this part will be the key point for enhancement of MTP process.

Abstract:Methanol to olefins (MTO) is a new technology of modern coal-to-chemicals industry. The catalyst performance and selectivity of light olefin in the MTO process can be remarkably improved by well-designed reactor operating mode. The simulation of MTO reaction in a single, two and three fluidized-bed connected in series was carried out by using the reaction and deactivation kinetics experimentally obtained on the commercial SAPO-34 catalyst, combined with fluidized-bed dynamic two-phase model and particle residence time model. The effects of catalyst residence time, gas-solid cocurrent and countercurrent flow on the MTO performance were investigated. The simulation results show that the catalyst coke content and selectivity of the light olefin depend on the catalyst residence time. The multi-bed in series operating mode will reduce the particle back-mixing, which results in a more uniform coke distribution and a longer catalyst lifetime. For the gas-solid countercurrent flow of two reactors in series, the second reactor is used to pre-coke the catalysts before entering into the first reactor and therefore the light olefin selectivity and the total coke content are increased. The catalyst production capacity of one pass is increased by 24.4% compared with that of single reactor mode. Three reactors connected in series mode can fully utilize the different functions of each reactor for pre-coking, MTO reaction and post-coking, bring about a 1% increase in the selectivity of the light olefin and a 31.1% increase in the catalyst production capacity when compared with the single reactor.

Abstract:With low oil prices, the existing coal-to-olefin enterprises are forced to improve profitability by reducing energy consumption. This paper studies the comprehensive energy analysis and integration of coal-based MTO process. Process simulation is established first and is validated by comparing with the industrial data. Energy analysis of the MTO process was then conducted, calculating relevant information of each heat exchange stream. The heat exchanger network synthesis was proposed by using gradual optimization integration strategy based on the T-H diagram. It was found that the hot energy of purified water and steam condensate could be fully utilized. The cold energy of ethylene tower could replace partial −24 °C refrigerant. It was also found that there is the possibility of multi-stage heat transfer in this process. The maximum energy recovery is achieved under the principle of energy cascade utilization and stepwise matching. The result showed that the new design decreases the utility duty and the required exchanger area by 4.76% and 8.63% compared with the industrial process. The capital cost, operation cost and total annual cost of total site are 8.17, 14.64 and 17.27 million $, which are 8.29%, 2.78% and 3.66% less than the industrial design.

Methanol to propylene process using moving bed technology and its engineering study

Abstract:A novel moving bed process for methanol to propylene(MMTP), and conducts engineering analysis for this process were presented. Firstly, according to the principle that the reactor must be matched with reaction catalyst deactivation, the most matching reactor for ZSM-5 catalysts(with mid-level deactivation) is moving bed. Moreover, the MMTP process can not only exert higher propylene selectivity of the catalyst, but also can utilize medium particle circulation rate for reaction and regeneration to serialize and stabilize high yield of propylene process. Secondly, regarding the strong exothermal characteristics of the MMTP reaction, two kinds of processes, fluidized bed one-step operation and fixed bed two-step operation, are compared. Based on the comparison results, it is concluded that the two-step operation of MMTP process can allocate reasonable reaction heat and control product distribution with flexibility. Finally, through integration of heat-exchange network optimization and alcohol-oil refining process, MMTP process owns high propylene yield on the basis of water and energy saving. On the basis of current MMTP process, 10000 t·a-1 propylene technology package design has been completed. In summary, MMTP owns visible competitive advantages both on technique and economics, which has high application potential in industry.

Abstract:Methanol to olefins (MTO), which provides a new route to produce light olefins such as ethylene and propylene from abundant natural materials (e.g., coal, natural gas or biomass), has been recently industrialized by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), Chinese Academy of Sciences. In this contribution, the process development of MTO is introduced, which emphasizes the importance of mesoscale studies and focuses on three aspects: a mesoscale modeling approach for MTO catalyst pellet, coke formation and control in MTO reactor, and scaling up of the microscale-MTO fluidized bed reactor to pilot-scale fluidized bed reactor. The challenges and future directions in MTO process development are also briefed.

Abstract:The methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction was analyzed in its intrinsic kinetics, diffusion, and reaction-diffusion aspects for maximized propylene yield. An intrinsic MTP kinetic model was introduced to account for the combined path of hydrocarbon pool and dual-cycle mechanisms of the MTP reaction over HZSM-5 catalyst. The MTP reaction was performed under several olefin cofeeding cases to study the effects of olefin recycling on the MTP mechanism and propylene production. Analyses on olefin cofeeding have shown to improve propylene yield by 10-20% as the added olefins enhance olefin methylation and cracking rates for higher propylene production. Development of a reaction-diffusion model also showed the recommended temperature use of 480 degrees C for optimum reaction and diffusion rates within the HZSM-5 catalyzed MTP process. These findings provide important insights for future works on the optimum design of the HZSM-5 catalyzed MTP process with an olefin recycling feature.

Abstract:The methanol-to-olefins (MTO) and methanol-to-propylene (MTP) processes are important ways to convert coal to chemicals. Successfully commercialized processes in recent years include the DMTO, s-MTO, MTO+OCP and MTP technologies developed respectively by Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, SINOPEC, UOP and Lurgi. This paper analyzes the characteristics of the heterogeneous catalytic reactions in the MTO process, and on this basis discusses various multiphase catalytic reactors used for converting methanol to olefins. Key features and specifications of different technologies, and the similarity and difference between the MTO and fluidized catalytic cracking processes are compared. The MTO reactions occur by hydrocarbon pool reaction mechanism, which has autocatalytic and coking deactivation behavior that makes it important to control the working state of the catalyst and limit back-mixing in the reactor to achieve good activity and olefin selectivity. The use of a hierarchical zeolite catalyst and a fluidized bed reactor with little back-mixing or a reactors-in-series assembly is suggested as potential improvement for the process.

Abstract:Methanol conversion to olefins, as an important reaction in C1 chemistry, provides an alternative platform for producing basic chemicals from nonpetroleum resources such as natural gas and coal. Methanol‐to‐olefin (MTO) catalysis is one of the critical constraints for the process development, determining the reactor design, and the profitability of the process. After the construction and commissioning of the world's first MTO plant by Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, based on high‐efficiency catalyst and fluidization technology in 2010, more attention has been attracted for a deep understanding of the reaction mechanism and catalysis principle, which has led to the continuous development of catalysts and processes. Herein, the recent progress in MTO catalyst development is summarized, focusing on the advances in the optimization of SAPO‐34 catalysts, together with the development efforts on catalysts with preferential ethylene or propylene selectivity.

Abstract:The methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction is an interesting and important reaction for both fundamental research and industrial application. The Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) has developed a MTO technology that led to the successful construction and operation of the world's first coal to olefin plant in 2010. This historical perspective gives a brief summary on the key issues for the process development, including studies on the reaction mechanism, molecular sieve synthesis and crystallization mechanism, catalyst and its manufacturing scale up, reactor selection and reactor scale up, process demonstration, and commercialization. Further challenges on the fundamental research and the directions for future catalyst improvement are also suggested.

Abstract:The production of high-quality gasoline and light olefins harbors tremendous industrial and economic significance. In this paper, a novel process is proposed for converting inferior light cycle oil (LCO) into propylene and ethylene, as well as the high-octane-number gasoline with rich BTX contents. The unique feature for the novel process is the integration of LCO selective hydrogenation unit with two-stage riser catalytic cracking. For comparative techno-economic and environmental analyses, typical two-stage riser catalytic cracking for maximizing the propylene (TMP) process and conventional residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) process models are developed. Based on the detailed process modeling and simulation results, techno-economic evaluation and environmental assessment have been performed. It is found that the novel process, coupled hydrogenation and TMP process, has a favorable impact on both the economic and environmental performances. The HTMP process has the highest net present value that means 2.13 times of TMP and 4.94 times of RFCC process, and reduces 15.26 t CO2 equivalents per million dollars output value compared with the TMP process. Moreover, we conduct the thermo-economic optimization for the HTMP process based on the exergy analysis. The result shows that full scale hydrogenation and recycling of hydro-LCO and increasing of the second riser outlet temperature could significantly increase the profitability of this novel process.

Abstract:The methanol-to-gasoline (MTG) and methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process are 2 epochal technological discoveries in the synfuels arena, first introduced by Mobil Oil Corporation, some 50 years after the Fischer-Tropsch process. Apart from the technological breakthroughs, the MTG and MTO processes have also provided a rich tableau for scientific research and pursuits. In this report, we will first provide anecdotal information pertaining to the discovery and development of these 2 processes. We will then focus on how the MTO process has evolved into a stand-alone technology in its own right for the 2 value-added products, ethylene, and propylene. Currently, UOP/Hydro is the world’s leading commercial technology supplier/licensor, for the MTO process, with Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) and Sinopec, as its close competitors. It appears that the MTO technology is now primed for future advancements and expansions. Two recent MTO production sites put in place with UOP/Norsk technology licensors, became operational recently, both in China: The newest is a 0.8 MM MTPA venture, licensed and operated by Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical Company, and the 0.3 MM MTPA Wison China Clean Energy venture started in 2013, licensed and operated by Wison Energy.

Thermodynamic Analysis of a Solar Thermochemical Cycle-Based Direct Coal Liquefaction System for Oil Production

Abstract:Direct coal liquefaction turns solid coal into transportable liquid fuel with a high energy conversion efficiency of nearly 60%. However, the hydrogen used in the direct coal liquefaction process mainly comes from coal gasification units, and gasification coal consumption accounts for about 30% of the total coal consumption. The authors of this article have proposed a solar thermochemical cycle-based direct coal liquefaction system and conducted a corresponding thermodynamic analysis. In this work, the economic feasibility, environmental impact, and the influence of key factors (coal price, oil price, carbon tax) for the industrial-scale low-carbon oil production system are analyzed. Compared with the traditional direct coal liquefaction system, the total coal consumption of the new system is reduced by ∼40%. Under low carbon constraints, the economics of the new system is comparable to that of the traditional one with a lower solar thermochemical hydrogen production cost (<13–16 yuan/kg H2). With the help of the solar thermochemical hydrogen production process, CO2 emissions of the new system can be reduced by 63%. Moreover, the solar thermochemical cycle could generate additional pure oxygen and profits. The methodology and results can provide important references for coal-to-liquid technology with high efficiency and low carbon emissions.

Abstract:The conversion process of coal or natural gas to light olefins via methanol is an effective way to solve such problems as the limited oil resource and the increasing olefins demands.Several representative processes,such as UOP/Hydro's methanol to olefins,syngas via dimethylether to olefins (SDTO) of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Lurgi's methanol to propylene,AtoFina/UOP's olefin cracking integrated with methanol to olefins,are reviewed.The technical requirement,new betterment and industrialization progress of these processes are focused.These processes except SDTO are hoped to industrialize in the following few years.And the abundant engineering design experience in fluid catalytic cracking(FCC) should be used to develop the domestic methanol to olefins process.At the same time,the devotion to the development of fluidized catalysts for methanol to olefins process also should be increased.

Abstract:Methanol-to-olefins (MTO), the most important catalytic process producing ethylene and propylene from non-oil feedstocks (coal, natural gas, biomass, CO 2 , etc.), is hindered by rapid catalyst deactivation due to coke deposition. Common practice to recover catalyst activity, i.e. removing coke via air combustion or steam gasification, unavoidably eliminates the active hydrocarbon pool species (HCPs) favoring light olefins formation. Density functional theory calculations and structured illumination microscopy reveal that naphthalenic cations, active HCPs enhancing ethylene production, are highly stable within SAPO-34 zeolites at high temperature. Here, we demonstrate a strategy of directly transforming coke to naphthalenic species in SAPO-34 zeolites via steam cracking. Fluidized bed reactor-regenerator pilot experiments show that an unexpectedly high light olefins selectivity of 85% is achieved in MTO reaction with 88% valuable CO and H 2 and negligible CO 2 as byproducts from regeneration under industrial-alike continuous operations. This strategy significantly boosts the economics and sustainability of MTO process.

Abstract:A novel system combining high- (HTFT) and low-temperature Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (LTFT) in olefin production is proposed. Utilizing syngas from coal gasification as the feed gas, the combined system integrates the advantages of HTFT and LTFT and results in an increased range of products, namely α-olefins (mainly C4, C6, and C8), synthetic lubricant, gasoline, diesel, and naphth. The system avoids the risk of product market fluctuation and especially realizes the objective of diversifying production and maximizing economic benefit. Innovative ethylene oligomerization process is suggested to increase the α-olefins production. Different schemes of Fischer–Tropsch synthesis process are simulated by the aid of Aspen Plus software and a feasibility analysis on each of them is also done. In an economic perspective, the optimal ratio of HTFT to LTFT for the HTFT–LTFT combined plant with ethylene oligomerization scheme is 3:2. The project presents a low fresh water consumption of 0.138kWh/USD, electricity consumption of 3.78×10−3kWh/USD and CO2 emission of 2.52kWh/USD, and is expected to have a net present value of 8.66 billion USD and an annual average of return on investment of 42.03% under the current crude oil price 0.25–0.31USD/L (2015–2017). These data demonstrate that the combined system has excellent economic profits and a remarkable ability to resist market risks compared to traditional single HTFT or LTFT process under a low crude oil price (below 0.5USD/L).

Abstract:As the world's largest consumer of coal, China is committed to developing a carbon–neutral coal industry. For this purpose, upgrading the carbon emission-intensive coal-chemical industries, such as coal-to-liquids (CTL) is imperative. This study develops a technical–economic framework to model and test four promising CTL upgrading processes. First and second processes involve low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis practices with larger gasifiers and air-separating units than the current level. Third, the process combines olefin and fuel co-production practices that utilize low- and high-temperature FT synthesis processes. Finally, the process produces both electricity and fuel by sending the tail gas of the synthesis process to an integrated cycle. Aspen Plus® is used to simulate the chemical processes, and the financial cost accounting model of the American Association of Cost Engineers is utilized to estimate the financial costs accurately. The results show that the upgraded processes can achieve an energy efficiency of more than 48 %, which is 6 % higher than the existing coal-to-oil process. Additionally, the break-even point is 2 %–14.45 % lower than the actual process, reducing carbon emissions by 2.78 %–10.34 %. According to these findings, the upgrade can help China reach its carbon neutrality targets and significantly contribute to global climate change and sustainable development goals.

Abstract:This study proposes two Coal-to-Aromatics processes integrated with Green Hydrogen (GH-CTA) to address the shortcomings of traditional processes, such as high carbon emissions and an unreasonable process structure. Additionally, one of the designs incorporates co-feeding of coal and wheat straw (GH-BCTA). The proposed processes are integrated with renewable energy-based hydrogen production technologies to balance the hydrogen and carbon elements in the system, resulting in near-zero carbon emissions. Through detailed process modeling, the technical performance, production costs, and environmental impact of the GH-CTA and GH-BCTA processes were analyzed and compared to the basic processes. The results demonstrate that both GH-CTA and GH-BCTA processes offer significant technical and economic advantages over the basic process. Notably, the GHBCTA process shows the most promise with a carbon utilization efficiency, energy efficiency, and net present value of 96.58 %, 84.57 %, and 3400.59 M$, respectively. CO2 emissions decrease significantly to 3.21 kg/kgaromatics, and water consumption decreases to -1.44 kg/kg-aromatics. The influence of fluctuating key economic factors on the economic performance of the two proposed processes was investigated through sensitivity analysis. The results indicate that the proposed processes demonstrate greater resilience to fluctuations in coal and aromatics prices. Furthermore, the environmental analysis revealed that the GH-CTA process exhibits lower life cycle energy consumption and carbon intensity compared to the other proposed processes. As a result, both the GH-CTA and GH-BCTA processes have the potential to significantly enhance the techno-economic and environmental performance of the traditional process, making them promising candidates for industrialization.
