Abstract:Integration into GVC has brought with unprecedented opportunities to the Chinese manufacturing industry,and also with obstacles to further upgrade the industry. High attention should be paid to the strategic transformation of the integration into GVC and the construction of NVC parallelly during the process from the growth on the bottom of GVC and to the upgrading of the high sector VC. Based on the analysis of two development mechanism,GVC and NVC,we studied two important method of building China's NVC,namely,specialized market and Leading enterprise network,we explored the mechanism,the approaches and the possible difficulties of building NVC for upgrading of industrial function. We considered that in China,the country who has large domestic market and developing consumption structure,the coordination between GVC and NVC is the most significant issues during globalization to achieve the industry upgrading.

Abstract:By using methods of literature, comparative analysis and logic analysis, this paper studies the obstacles and constraints faced by the value chain leaders in the process of functional upgrading of China's sporting goods manufacturing industry cluster under the global value chain environment. The upgrading practice of foreign industrial clusters shows that domestic enterprises can rely on the familiar local market and cultural background to form a strong national value chain (NVC), occupy the high-end links of the value chain, have domestic well-known brands, sales channels and other high-end links in the value chain, and then develop and spread gradually, occupy foreign markets with similar demand, establish a national value chain dominated by local companies as the "chain master", and finally, enter the European and American markets to establish a balanced value chain parallel to the dominance of international giants such as ADIDAS and NIKE, break through the status of being "captured" and "squeezed", and realize product functional upgrades.

Abstract:The new round of industrial revolution is setting off the prelude.As a new growth pole of the sustainable and healthy development of national economy, advanced manufacturing industry is highly concerned by the countries all over the world.China's advanced manufacturing industry still lags behind developed countries.In the period of new industrial revolution, the key to quicken the upgrading and development of China's advanced manufacturing industry is to grasp the discourse power and the dominant power in the process of reconstructing the global production system.Taking "The Belt and Road" initiative as an opportunity to construct international regional value chain (IRVC) can expand the international space for the upgrading and development of China's advanced manufacturing industry.Through the governance and expansion of national value chain and international regional value chain, the enterprise can improve the comprehensive governance ability of value chain, and lay the foundation for the constructing and leading of the new global value chain (New GVC).With the deepening of " The Belt and Road" initiative, the value multi-circulation system with the core of China will be gradually formed and become a new motive to promote China's advanced manufacturing industry upgrading and development.

Abstract:Considering that as the key mode of the present international industry transference, global value chain (GVC) has essentially influenced the micro-base of the global economy. Firstly, this paper first puts forward a GVC-like paradigm of industry transference and speeifies four classic facts. Secondly, this paper points out the international work-division system formed by the GVC-dominated industrial transference after the analysis of the driving force to the GVC-mode industrial transference, is the implementing institution of the international technology frontier. Thirdly, this paper points out warning significance to reflecting the developing countries' industrial upgrading. Last but not least, This research outcome tells us to develop national value chain by combining the competitive way of the GVC-mode industrial transference with the present situation and advantage is a new way for China to upgrade industries and reduce the area disparity.

Abstract:China’s entry into the global value chain, not only caused the rapid growth of trade, but also provided Chinese enterprises with a rapid track of process escalation and product upgrades. However, their functions have also hindered further escalation. We found that, entering into a balanced network which is based on the ability to share and concentrated on developing new products and new techniques, are more symmetrical than in a captured value chain. China’s industrial upgrading opportunities are determined not only by its relationship in the global value chain, but also by its ability to determine its own strategy and innovation competence.

Abstract:The globalized development of manufacturing enabled China to reap huge profits as a leading producer. However, the embedded global value chain (GVC) export-oriented development model has also brought some challenges to China, as it does international subcontracting work at the bottom of GVCs. China is thus striving to adjust the imbalance in the world economic structure by shaping China's globalization strategy based on domestic demand and establishing an outlook and a mechanism creating a virtuous circle between the domestic and international economies. The new Chin-adominated GVCs will become China's new, high-level, comprehensive, and open spaces, links, and vectors, which will enable our economy to achieve high-speed industrial development on a mid-to-high-end basis. The GVCs formed through the "One Belt One Road" initiative, based on domestic demand, will help to push its economy more quickly into a new stage of innovation-driven development, which in turn will provide China's manufacturing sector the bright minds and the wings it needs to soar.

Abstract:Separation and integration of GVC form four trade-off relationships between outsourcees in developing countries and MNCs or big buyers as outsourcers in developed countries.Captive network relationship has to be accepted by developing countries in nowadays international trade pattern,which make outsourcees in developing countries not realized to the course of functional upgrading or inter-sectoral upgrading.Captive network comes from technology power of MNCs and market power of big buyers,so the way out of casting off captive network relationship is located at fostering NVC based on home market in developing countries.From on the view of a comparative survey of GVC and NVC,we analysis inner conditions to constructing NVC,probe into path from NVC to GVC and finally put forward the obstacles and four countermeasures to eliminating captive network in China.

Abstract:Recent literature has problematized the limits of deeply held assumptions about linear, unidirectional upgrading trajectories in global value chains (GVCs). As firm and chain trajectories and sources of upgrading have changed in recent years, GVC analysis has adjusted to focus on new emerging actors and new distributions of power within value chains. After a discussion of some limits to the treatment of upgrading in the GVC literature, the paper develops a simple extension of the classical model of upgrading in ways that do not presuppose particular valuations of functional, product, and processes upgrading, and that do not fetishize upgrading as such. The paper works with case studies of four Chinese firms located in Ningbo, China. Each 'wears multiple hats' and together they provide illustrative examples of the limits of linear, unidirectional approaches of upgrading. This simple model has the singular advantage of ensuring that trajectories of business upgrading and downgrading in GVCs can be understood as always open, often operating in diverse and contradictory ways. In this sense, the confusion of upgrading with firm strategy with their regional impacts can be avoided.

Abstract:This paper constructs the regional GVC embeddedness based on the Chinese customs import and export trade data in 2000-2015,then tests the effect of GVC embeddedness on industrial structure upgrading and its regional heterogeneity by OLS model and 2SLS model, the results show that: First, GVC embeddedness contributes to the optimization and rationalization of industrial structure, so that becomes an important driving force for the industrial structure upgrading. However, attention should be paid to the phenomenon of “false industrial balance” in the rationalization of industrial structure. Secondly, there is regional heterogeneity in the impact of GVC embeddedness on industrial structure upgrading. GVC embeddedness significantly promotes the upgrading of industrial structure in eastern China, and the rationalization of industrial structure shows “a benign industrial equilibrium”, but GVC embeddedness has no significant impact on the upgrading of industrial structure in central and western China. In view of this, China should not only continue to deepen the participation in global value chain, but also strengthen the cultivation of competitive advantages of industrial chain, and encourage the central and western regions to seek differentiated path of industrial structure upgrading according to their own conditions.

Abstract:Eastern areas's entry into GVC,not only causes regional disparity,but also reduces industry linkage.Low position of eastern areas locks central and western areas in supplier of labor and raw materi- al.International subcontracting in eastern areas might transfer to other developing countries when produc- tion cost increases.We find that NVC based on GVC is a feasible road to industrial upgrading and balanced development of area.But establishment of NVC needs to transfer labor-intensive industry to central and western areas.Therefore we should lower transaction cost of inland areas.

Abstract:The functional activities, such as management, marketing, R&D and fabrication, carried out by a country or industry is of great importance for its governance and upgrading on the global value chains (GVCs). This paper provides a long-term macro-economic analysis on China's functional upgrading in GVCs and its drivers between 1999 and 2011. We combine the world input-output database with the newly compiled labour occupations database to measure China's functional income growth in internationally fragmented production networks, and then incorporate the concept into the chaining structural decomposition analysis (SDA) to explore its drivers. We find that China has achieved functional upgrading to some degree, reflected in the growth of China's domestic value added in headquarter activities, such as R&D, at the aggregate and industrial levels. However, fabrication activity still stands out, indicating that China still has a long way to go on upgrading in GVCs. Finally, through the chaining SDA, we find that among the GVC production, technology and consumption effects, the consumption level (consumer demand) is the main factor driving the growth of China's functional upgrading.

Abstract:Since launching its reforms and opening up, China has actively integrated itself into global value chains (GVCs) and experienced continuous growth. However, there exists a significant imbalance between GVC upgrading and economic growth across regions in China. Can GVC upgrading promote economic growth at the regional level? Despite the theoretical foundations and empirical evidence provided at the national level, research on GVC upgrading at the subnational level remains limited. This study constructs a temporal indicator to measure GVC upgrading at the finest subnational level, including cities at the prefecture level and above, and employs panel fixed effects (FE) and mediation models to examine the impact and mechanism of GVC upgrading on regional economic growth, aiming for a meaningful exploration in this area. The results show that GVC upgrading has a significant positive effect on regional economic growth with robust performance. Specifically, a 1-standard-deviation improvement in GVC upgrading leads to a 0.054-standard-deviation increase in the logarithm of per capita gross domestic product (GDP). Heterogeneity analysis shows that the promotion effect is more pronounced in coastal areas and administrative centers. Mechanism analysis indicates that GVC upgrading promotes regional economic growth by facilitating capital accumulation, promoting technological progress, and enhancing human resources, among which, facilitating capital accumulation plays the most significant role, accounting for over 70% of the economic growth effects associated with GVC upgrading. Thus, China should create an enabling environment for promoting GVC upgrading, enhance capital accumulation, foster regional innovation systems, improve the quality of human capital, and promote domestic market integration.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate and, more importantly, examine the path of a successful young Chinese high-tech firm in upgrading and reconstructing its position in the global value chain (GVC) of the chip industry. We examine the existing GVC positions of chip firms, the motivations for the firm’s entry into the market, the choice of path to upgrading, and the attempt to restructure the GVCs. The study uses a qualitative approach, mainly interviews and secondary data. The findings suggest that devising and consistently implementing a targeted differentiation strategy, overcoming technological bottlenecks and developing products towards a high-value location, and targeting customers through open innovation and entrepreneurship are key for laggards to improve their position in the GVCs. Building an ecological alliance based on the existing ecosystem is an important means for upgrading a firm and rebuilding the GVC. This is possible for young firms in the emerging segments of Industry 4.0, which are moving into a highly digitised world where there are numerous market opportunities both internally and globally. We argue that the ability to upgrade requires not only internal capabilities, but also the creation of appropriate markets to support the development of capabilities. Our study also provides some managerial implications.

Abstract:With the in-depth development of the global economy, China's manufacturing export is facing an urgent need for transformation and upgrading. From the perspective of global value chain, this paper analyzes the position and challenges of China's manufacturing industry in the global value chain, discusses the motivation and path of export transformation and upgrading, and puts forward corresponding strategic suggestions. The study shows that China's manufacturing industry is gradually climbing from low end to high end in the global value chain, but it still faces problems such as technical bottleneck and brand lack. Therefore, it is necessary to increase investment in technological innovation and brand building, enhance export competitiveness, and realize the sustainable development of manufacturing industry.

Abstract:Cross-border investment is essential for western China's globalization. Global value chain (GVC) forms cross-border investment networks between industries in western China and overseas cities. Focusing on GVC, this study uses the social network analysis method, entropy method, multi-index comprehensive evaluation method, and quadratic assignment procedure analysis method to examine the characteristics and influencing factors of the urban networks of research and development (R&D), production, and sales formed as a result of the overseas investments of listed manufacturing companies in western China. Results showed that the three types of investment networks involved multiple industry types and multiple central cities with differentiated diversity and multicentrality. The R&D urban network's leading sub-industries were the mechanical equipment and instruments, medicine and biological products, and metal and nonmetal industries. The destination cities were mostly those home to educational and scientific research centers. The production urban network's leading sub-industries were the mechanical equipment, instrument, and food and beverage industries. The destination cities were mostly regional central cities in developing countries. The sales urban network's leading sub-industries were the mechanical equipment and instrument, metal and nonmetal, and petrochemical and plastics industries. The destination cities were numerous and scattered. In addition, the R&D urban network easily formed specialized clusters, core nodes easily controlled the production urban network, and individual nodes did not easily control the sales urban network. Technological and economic system advantages greatly impacted the three network types. Considering the different influencing factors, this study suggests optimizing the institutional investment environment to narrow the institutional gap, adjusting and optimizing the investment layout to expand overseas markets, and increasing R&D funds to stimulate technological progress and overseas investments in western China.
