Abstract:The influences of the chemical agents,oxidative modification and coupling treatment for carbon fiber dispersion and binding properties were investigated.The fiber suface morphology was analyzed by the image of fiber analyzer,and the fiber dispersion was reflected by the Zeta potential of slurry,absorbency and digital pictures.The functional paper were prepared with a different ratio of carbon fiber and pulp,and the physical strength and volume resistivity of the paper were tested.The results showed that: the effect of tween-80 was the best in four kinds of chemial agents,coupling modification significantly improved the dispersion performance of carbon fiber,superior than oxidative modification,the increase of the dispersion would enhance the conductivity and physical strength of functional paper,and 30% content of carbon fiber achieved the "percolation threshold" of conductive material.

Abstract:Through the detection and analysis of the solution by zeta potential, absorbency and digital photos, the alkaline pretreatment and surface treatment of different reagents were investigated on the effects of the dispersion properties of carbon fiber. The physical strength and volume resistivity of paper consist of carbon fiber and plant fiber pulp. The results showed that alkaline pretreatment could improve the dispersion of carbon fiber to a certain extent, Tween-80 and CPAM reagents could further significantly increase the dispersion and tensile index and electrical conductivity of carbon fiber paper. However, their dispersion mechanism were different. Tween-80 realized the fiber dispersion by reducing the solid-liquid surface tension and improving the wetting ability of water on the fiber; and CPAM formed a large three-dimensional network to prevent the movement and clusterging of carbon fiber together, and to improve the dispersion of the carbon fiber in the pulp.

Abstract:APMP (alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp) of bamboo was treated in NaOH-urea aqueous solution to modify the fiber properties. The effects of soaking time, fiber concentration, alkali dosage, freezing temperature, and freezing time were evaluated by single-factor experiments. The optimal conditions were determined as a soaking time of 10 min, a fiber concentration of 15%, an alkali dosage of 6%, a freezing temperature of -7 °C, and a freezing time of 40 min. Compared with the properties of untreated APMP, the tensile index of the treated APMP was increased by 64%, and the burst index was increased by 82%. The bulk was reduced by 15%, and the softness was increased by 18%. There was no obvious variation on the folding strength. According to the instrumental analysis, there were no significant effects on the structure in terms of functional groups, the crystalline region, or the fiber surface morphology; however, the variation on the fiber quality was more significant.

Abstract:In this work we have investigated the effect of surface modification of fibres on the overall mechanical properties of high-density papers. Paper sheets were prepared by a combination of heat-pressing and polyelectrolyte Layer-by-Layer (LbL) modification of different softwood fibres. LbLs of Polyallylamine Hydrochloride (PAH) and Hyaluronic Acid (HA) were adsorbed onto unbleached kraft fibres and bleached Chemo-ThermoMechanical Pulp (CTMP) to improve the strength of the fibre–fibre joints in papers made from these fibres. Additionally, different sheet-making procedures were used to prepare a range of network densities with different degrees of fibre–fibre interaction in the system. The results demonstrate that interfacial adhesion within fibre–fibre joints plays a pivotal role in the network's performance, even at higher paper densities. Hygroexpansion measurements and fracture zone imaging with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) further support the claim that stronger interactions between the fibres allow for a better utilisation of the inherent fibre properties. Surface treatments and network densification significantly improved the paper sheets' mechanical properties. Specifically, LbL-treatments alone increased specific stiffness up to 60% and specific strength by over 100%. This improvement is linked to the build-up of residual stresses during drying. Due to a high interaction between the fibres during water removal the fibres become constrained, leading to increased stretching of fibre segments. Strengthened fibre joints intensify this constraint, further increasing the stretch and, consequently, the paper's strength.

Abstract:Kozo paper, usu-mino-gami, is frequently used as the first back lining paper of hanging scrolls in order to support the main paper with a painting or a work of calligraphy on it. To dye it an appropriate color, paper is often treated with an alkali mordant solution. However, current kozo paper products have received such comments from conservators that wet tensile strength is weak and hard to handle. Therefore, improving the wet tensile strength of kozo paper is required. In previous papers, the effect of the sheet forming method, cooking condition, and parenchyma cell content between fibers on the wet tensile strength of kozo paper has been investigated. In this paper, the effect of glucuronoxylan, the main component of hardwood hemicellulose on the wet tensile strength of kozo paper was investigated. The wet tensile strength of kozo paper, when made in different cooking conditions, was evaluated using the Finch device. Glucuronoxylan content in fiber was analyzed using GC-FID. According to the results, it has been proved that glucuronoxylan content (with a xylan to glucan molar ratio of 4.43% to 5.16%) itself contributes to the wet tensile strength of the kozo sheet. Therefore, to increase the wet tensile strength of kozo paper, it is recommended to cook under milder conditions, thus retaining a higher amount of glucuronoxylan in the pulp.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of chemical composition (Extractives content, lignin structure, sugar component) and basic density of eucalyptus woods on their characteristics in kraft pulping, two special eucalyptus species were used as raw material and cooking experiment, chemical and chromatography analyses were carried out in this research. The results showed that the main factors affecting pulping characteristics and pulp yield were the ratio of condensed structure in lignin, extractives content and neutral sugar content as well. The basic density of the wood influenced the dosage of active alkali and pulp yield only to some extent.

Abstract:Chemical structure and molecular weight of acetic acid lignin of eucalyptus viminalis were studied with IR, 1H-NMR and GPC. The paper was treated with acetic acid lignin. The characteristics of polyurethane derived from paper was also analyzed. It was found that acetic acid lignin contained many hydroxyl groups including phenolic and aliphatic hydroxyl groups and had typical structure of polyol. The molecular weight of acetic acid lignin was relatively high and molecular weight dispersion coefficient was small. The molecular weight distribution of acetic acid lignin was even. The carbamate bonds were formed among fibers when the paper was treated with acetic acid lignin and polyurethane. The carbamate bonds bonded the fibers in paper together. Therefore,the treatment enhanced the physical strength of papers, especially the wet strength, but also broadened the application fields of papers such as packaging ,architecture and so on.

Abstract:Fixing agents, highly cationic and low molecular weighted polyelectrolytes, are widely used in the papermaking industry to attach dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) to wood fibres and remove them from papermaking systems. However, the interaction between the fixing agents and DCS is still not well understood. In this study, oxidized starch, resin acid, and mixes thereof were used as models for dissolved substances (DS), colloidal substances (CS), and dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) in simulated papermaking furnishes, respectively. These were treated with three different polyamine fixing agents (PA) and their effect on the stability of the systems was evaluated by analyzing the residual concentrations of the model compounds after solid-liquid separation. The interactions between the dissolved substances and the colloidal substances were inferred from the results. The effectiveness of the fixing agents in removing the oxidized starch was poor while their effectiveness in removing the resin acid was good in the singular systems. However, in the mixed DCS system, the removal of the oxidized starch was improved, while that of the resin acid was worsened. The results indicate that when a fixing agent is added into the mixed DCS system, the DS is first changed into DS-polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC), and the PEC is attached to the CS particle surfaces, improving the stability of the latter and making it more difficult to remove. On the other hand, once the CS stability is disturbed and its agglomeration takes place, more DS can be removed compared to the singular DS system.

Abstract:Holocellulose fibers provide great potential to make paper with high performance. However, inappropriate reaction conditions may limit its improvement in paper performance due to the lack of sufficient research data. In this work, paper is prepared from the birch holocellulose fibers based on peracetic acid treatment and the papermaking process. The features of resulting holocellulose fibers are evaluated for different peracetic acid treatment conditions such as temperature and time. It reveals that high temperature and long treatment time lead to the degradation of hemicellulose/cellulose and the destruction of fibers, which further results in the poor mechanical performance of paper. By optimization for the treatment condition of holocellulose fibers, the corresponding paper exhibits the highest tensile strength (93 MPa), good bursting strength (601 kPa), and tearing strength (647 mN). The determination of optimum conditions will provide guidelines for the industrial production of holocellulose fibers and paper.

Abstract:Abstract Recycled paper and some hardwood paper often display poorer mechanical properties, which hinder its practical applications and need to be addressed. In this work, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) obtained by a combined process of enzymatic hydrolysis and grinding (EG-CNFs), grinding and microfluidization (GH-CNFs) or TEMPO-mediated oxidation and grinding (TE-CNFs) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, CNFs were made into films on which some characterizations including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV–Vis transmittance spectroscopy were implemented. Results showed that CNF fibrillation was promoted as times of passes increased in microfluidization, and CNFs pretreated by enzyme possessed shorter length. Crystallinity of CNFs was related to CNF manufacturing methods, while CNF films’ transparency was correlated to CNF diameter distributions. Moreover, CNFs were applied with different dosages on recycled and hardwood paper. Lengths of CNFs, strength of CNF network, and pulp properties were critical factors affecting the mechanical strength of CNFs-enhanced paper. GH-CNFs showed better strengthened effect on tensile strength of paper than TE-CNFs and EG-CNFs. The best overall improvement was achieved at GH-CNF10 dosage of 5.0 wt% on hardwood paper. The increment of tensile index, burst index, and folding endurance were 108.32%, 104.65%, and 600%, respectively. This work aims to find out the relationship between production methods and morphologies of CNFs and how the morphological characteristics of CNFs affecting the mechanical performance of paper when they are added as strength additives.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibril（CNF） was used as the anionic component of two dual strengthening systems wherein polyamidopolyamine epichlorohydrin resin（PAE） or cationic starch（CS） was used as the cationic component. Their strengthening effects were investigated for lowbasis-weight（30 g/m~2） paper composed of a mixture of fully bleached softwood and hardwood pulp in a 4:1 mass ratio. Using the PAE/CNF or CS/CNF dual system, it was generally easier to achieve higher wet and dry tensile strengths of paper compared to the paper using the single PAE or CS system. For example, the paper using the PAE（0.4%）/CNF（0.3%） dual system exhibited 89% higher wet tensile strength than the paper using the single PAE（0.4%） system, and the paper using CS（1.3%）/CNF（0.3%） dual treatment showed 21% higher dry strength than that using the single CS（1.3%） system. However, the PAE/CNF system only showed small improvement in the dry strength of paper（11% higher than that of paper using the single PAE system）, so did the CS/NFC system on wet strength improvement（only 17% higher than that of paper using the single CS system）.
A new recognition of the binding of cellulose fibrils in papermaking by probing interaction between nanocellulose and cationic hemicellulose

Abstract:The paper industry is constantly seeking innovative ways to improve paper quality, increase process efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The unique properties of cationic modification of hemicellulose provide an opportunity to achieve these goals. Herein, eucalyptus hemicellulose was modified with quaternary ammonium groups to yield cationic hemicellulose (CH), which was used to elaborate structural and functional interactions between CH and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). These interactions were quantitatively monitored by a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). We empirically studied bonding motifs between CNFs and hemicellulose by forming films. The degree of substitution (DS) of CH was made between 0.095 and 0.254 by varying the molar ratio of the reaction, leading to a gamut of positive charges in hemicellulose. The adsorption of CH to a CNF surface was related to electrostatic interactions. The high DS of CH had higher adsorption rate and larger adsorption capacity within the CNF-surface, while CH as a reinforcing agent significantly increased the tensile strength of the film by hydrogen bonding, which was 71% higher than that of unmodified hemicellulose. The strong binding between CH and nanocellulose may highlight a platform to develop paper additives and nanocellulose composites for high-value applications.

Abstract:This paper deals with cationic modified cellulose fibrils obtained by reacting the cellulose fibrils with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (EPTMAC). The physical and chemical properties of unmodified cellulose fibrils (UMCF) and cationic modified cellulose fibrils (CMCF) were characterized by SEM, FTIR, degree of substitution, colloid titration, zeta potential, and thermogravimetric analysis. The experimental results showed that, after cationization, surface charge density and zeta potential reversed, thermal stability decreased, and new functional groups appeared, while the surface morphology did not show much difference from the UMCF. With the addition of three kinds of additives (UMCF, CMCF, and cationic starch (CS)) to BCTMP, the addition of UMCF and CMCF had little effect on zeta potential, while the addition of CS changed zeta potential obviously. With the increasing of additive amount, the bulk of paper sheets added CMCF did not change obviously, while the bulk of paper sheets added UMCF and CS decreased rapidly. With regard to physical strength, all the three kinds of additives could improve the tensile index and tear index; the tensile index of paper sheets added CS was higher than that of added UMCF and CMCF, while the tear index of paper sheets added CMCF was the highest among the three additives.

Abstract:Novel eco-friendly strength agent has inspired much attention of researchers. Herein, the PEI-KH560 prepared by PEI (polyethyleneimine) and KH560 (γ-glycidyl ether propyl trimethoxysilane) was added in the pulp suspension to enhance the paper performance. The results showed that the m(PEI):m(KH560) ratio and PEI's molecular weight were closely related with the paper strength and hydrophobicity. The SEM morphology of paper surface showed that the fiber-fiber crosslinking reached the tightest, at the optimal m(PEI):m(KH560) ratio and PEI's molecular weight. The results showed that when the Mw (molecular weight) of PEI was 10,000 and the m(PEI):m(KH560) ratio was 1:2, the PEI-KH560 presented the best strengthening performance on the paper strength and hydrophobicity. Dry tensile index and wet tensile index could reach 29.9 N·m/g and 1.37 N·m/g after adding the PEI10000-KH560 in pulp suspension before the paper formation. Further, the effect of process conditions (temperature, time, the addition amount, and pulp concentration) on the strength and hydrophobicity of paper network structure was investigated, after adding PEI-KH560 into the pulp suspension. It was of great significance for studying the mechanism between the chemical structures of PEI-KH560 and paper performance, which provided valuable theoretical practice on the preparation of novel strength agent.
Lignin Inter-Diffusion Underlying Improved Mechanical Performance of Hot-Pressed Paper Webs

Abstract:Broader use of bio-based fibres in packaging becomes possible when the mechanical properties of fibre materials exceed those of conventional paperboard. Hot-pressing provides an efficient method to improve both the wet and dry strength of lignin-containing paper webs. Here we study varied pressing conditions for webs formed with thermomechanical pulp (TMP). The results are compared against similar data for a wide range of other fibre types. In addition to standard strength and structural measurements, we characterise the induced structural changes with X-ray microtomography and scanning electron microscopy. The wet strength generally increases monotonously up to a very high pressing temperature of 270 °C. The stronger bonding of wet fibres can be explained by the inter-diffusion of lignin macromolecules with an activation energy around 26 kJ mol-1 after lignin softening. The associated exponential acceleration of diffusion with temperature dominates over other factors such as process dynamics or final material density in setting wet strength. The optimum pressing temperature for dry strength is generally lower, around 200 °C, beyond which hemicellulose degradation begins. By varying the solids content prior to hot-pressing for the TMP sheets, the highest wet strength is achieved for the completely dry web, while no strong correlation was observed for the dry strength.

Abstract:Pre-extraction of hemicelluloses prior to pulping and conversion of the extracted hemicelluloses to other byproducts will provide additional revenue to the traditional pulp and paper industry. The effect of hemicelluloses pre-extraction with dilute sulfuric acid on the properties and bleachability of aspen (Populus tremuloides) chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) was investigated. The acid pre-extraction significantly reduced refining energy consumption to a given freeness. However, at the same freeness, the acid pre-extraction resulted in the reduction of bulk, tensile index, and zero-span breaking length, fewer long fibers and more fines, but an increase of the Scott bond strength. Alkaline peroxide bleaching can compensate the strength loss, but the bleachability of pulps with acid pre-extraction was lower than that of the control.
Improved Dispersion Of Bacterial Cellulose Fibers For The Reinforcement Of Paper Made From Recycled Fibers

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) can be used to improve the physical properties of paper. However, previous studies have showed that the effectiveness of this improvement is impaired by the agglomeration of the disintegrated BC fibers. Effective dispersion of BC fibers is important to their reinforcing effects to paper products, especially those made of recycled fibers. In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose, xylan, glucomannan, cationized starch, and polyethylene oxide were used to improve the dispersion of BC fibers. With dispersed BC fibers, the paper made of recycled fiber showed improved dry tensile strength. The best improvement in dry tensile index was 4.2 N.m/g or 12.7% up, which was obtained by adding BC fibers dispersed with glucomannan. Glucomannan had the highest adsorption onto BC fibers, i.e., 750 mg/g at 1000 mg/L concentration, leading to the best colloidal stability of BC fiber suspension that had no aggregation in 50 min at 0.1 weight ratio of glucomannan to BC. TEMPO-mediated oxidation of BC was effective in improving its colloidal stability, but not effective in improving the ability of BC fiber to enhance paper dry tensile index while the wet tensile index was improved from 0.89 N.m/g to 1.59 N.m/g, i.e., similar to 80% improvement.
