Abstract:The iron and steel production industry entails high resource and energy consumption and generates a serious amount of waste and pollution. The need to conserve energy and reduce emissions underlines the importance of correctly and comprehensively evaluating the iron and steel industrial systems. Properly evaluating the utilization levels of resources and energy is one of the important tasks. In this publication I introduce a thermodynamic exergy analysis method to analyze and evaluate iron and steel industrial systems. The utilization levels of resources and energy are evaluated by comparing the result of the exergy calculation for the traditional production chain and for the material and energy recycling eco-industrial chain. The systemic problems are thus revealed and measures for improvement are proposed, providing a theoretical basis for planning and construction of iron and steel eco-industrial parks. ©2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Green metallurgical technology, as an environmentally friendly and efficient metallurgical method, is increasingly becoming a global research focus in the metallurgical industry. This paper reviews the definition, essence, historical evolution, significance, and application fields of green metallurgical technology, and deeply analyzes the current development status, major achievements, and challenges faced by green metallurgical technology worldwide. On this basis, the paper discusses the innovative directions and emerging technologies of green metallurgical technology and introduces its practical applications in the steel industry, non-ferrous metal smelting, and environmental protection with specific examples. Finally, the paper looks ahead to the future development trends of green metallurgical technology, analyzes policy support and industrial prospects, and emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and technology exchange. The research aims to provide references and lessons for promoting the development of green metallurgical technology.

Abstract:As a basic raw material industry, metallurgical industry is crucial for national economy and defense construction. Its development level reflects the industrialization process of a country. The metallurgical industry currently faces multiple constraints in terms of resource, energy, and environment. To address these constraints, green metallurgy is the only way and can create a sustainable development mode for future development of the metallurgical industry in China. Considering the background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, domestic and international dual circulation, as well as supply-side structural reforms, we analyze the current status and development trend of steel and nonferrous metals in China and abroad, and review the development status of metallurgical technologies. Moreover, we examine the innovative development of green metallurgy from the perspective of resource, energy, and environment, and summarize several major problems. Based on the prediction and potential analysis, we present the major strategic demand for green metallurgy and propose the following countermeasures: enhancing the strategic position of the metallurgical industry, developing disruptive technologies for waste-free metallurgy, deploying major innovation projects regarding resource and energy substitution as well as control of environmental pollution and carbon emission, implementing green metallurgy policy and standards, and creating an innovative talent training system and science popularization platforms.

Abstract:The iron and steel industry is the leading industry supporting China's industrial sector. Currently, there is less assessment work on green and low-carbon technologies for the iron and steel industry. This study clarifies the overall strategy of technology assessment by researching the relevant theories and methods of technology assessment. The study further establishes a scientific and reasonable comprehensive assessment index system of green and low-carbon technologies for the iron and steel industry from the aspects of technology index, economy and promotion, and application, including factors such as 11 indexes, the amount of energy saving, carbon dioxide emission reduction, and the resource recovery rate by utilising analytical and comprehensive methods and combining with the characteristics of the technologies. By analysing and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the commonly used assessment methods, the entropy weighting method, grey correlation analysis method, and TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution) method are combined and optimised to construct a comprehensive assessment model. The Latin hypercube sampling method is also introduced to analyse the technical parameters in combination with the evaluation model. Finally, fourteen iron and steel green and low-carbon technologies were selected for case assessment and uncertainty analysis of technical parameters, and it was found that the comprehensive assessment result of gas combined cycle power generation technology was optimal. After determining the weights of each assessment indicator through the entropy weighting method, it is concluded that the technical performance indicator > economic indicator > promotional indicator. A comparative analysis of the results under the three preference decisions concludes that technical performance is the main obstacle to improving the comprehensive assessment score of the technology, followed by the economics of the technology. Finally, the uncertainty analysis of the technical parameters shows that the fluctuation of the technical parameters not only affects the performance of the technology, but also affects the weights of the indicators and the comprehensive evaluation results of the technology.

Abstract:It's systematically analyzed that energy efficiency optimization technology has been applied in the field of steel industry. The fundamental principal of energy optimization technology is reasonably matching the quality and price of energy as well as energy-dominated systematic energy efficiency management system. Specific measures of energy optimization have been put forward, which include taking high efficiency utilized technology such as energy saving from the original, the production process and recycling of waste heat and waste energy etc., integrating and configuring energy in an optimized way of high efficiency and excellent quality, fully realizing the function of different energy in order to optimize the utilization sequence of energy, and improving the energy medium system by themselves. Finally it is clearly pointed out that the steel industry should pay more consideration about the great deal of energy system which they have used now and an ideal energy evaluation methodology and standard should be built as soon as possible if they want to take full usage of the real role and function of energy in all aspects.

But green technology is still at its forming and developing stage, and there are many difficulties and questions in its practice and popularization. Abstract:Chinese steel industry has made significant progress on reducing fresh water consumption and CO2/SO2/COD (chemical oxygen demand)/dust emissions, and improving comprehensive utilization of solid waste. Some steel companies have become topped worldwide. However, due to the large output quantity of crude steel, the whole steel industry is still a huge source of pollutants. At present, environmental protection standards are encountering challenges of lack of technical support, taxation policy and other issues. Steel industry is currently facing enormous environmental pressure. The development trends of environmental protection technologies were studied by summarizing different development stages. To realize the development targets, the industry needs to carry out its research with independent intellectual property rights, develop comprehensive management systems and establish ecological chain with other industries. This can not only raise the level of environmental protection in a broader range, but also improve the energy efficiency of iron and steel plants and increase added value of waste utilization. Finally, 23 environmental protection technologies were proposed and 4 new environmental protection practices were studied.

Abstract:The iron and steel industry is the largest carbon emitter in China’s manufacturing sector and one of the most important fields in the country’s response to climate change. This paper aims to explain the current situation, technological pathways, and future direction of green and low-carbon development of the iron and steel industry. According to the carbon emissions of the iron and steel industry, this paper analyzes the relationship between steelmaking technologies and carbon emissions, as well as the transformation trend of the world’s iron and steel industry, finding that China’s iron and steel industry faces both opportunities and challenges. Steel scrap recycling and electric furnace steelmaking technologies, re-electrification, hydrogen metallurgy, resource recycling and by-products, and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) are the main technologies tailored to the transformation pathways, and the optimization of energy consumption structure is an important direction for future development. Therefore, this paper believes that clean energy, as a guarantee for carbon mitigation, will play an increasingly important role in the process towards achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals (the “dual carbon” goals), in addition to the transformation of metallurgical technologies.

Abstract:The green and low-carbon transformation of the iron and steel industry stands as a pivotal cornerstone in the development of China. It is an inevitable trajectory guiding the future of industry. This study examined the energy consumption and carbon emission trends in the iron and steel industry. Variations under different scenarios were analyzed while emphasizing production control, changes in production structure and energy efficiency improvement. The analysis integrated the extreme energy efficiency model. This study proposed methods to enhance energy efficiency in the iron and steel industry. The costs of energy efficiency improvement and production structure changes were assessed using marginal energy saving and abatement cost curves. The findings showed that the carbon emission reduction contribution of crude steel production decline is the highest, while energy efficiency improvement technology offers the smallest, whose contribution, however, is substantial and cannot be overlooked by 2030. Energy efficiency improvement in the Chinese iron and steel industry results in an average unit energy saving and abatement cost of 27.0 yuan. It results in a total abatement cost of 21.02 billion yuan and a potential abatement of 780 Mt. Considering abatement potential, altering production structure offers significantly higher cumulative abatement compared to energy efficiency improvement technology. This is because the per unit abatement cost of production structure change is 702.7 yuan. However, this high cost poses a challenge to widespread adoption. The integration of the iron and steel industry into the carbon trading system necessitates reinforcing market constraints and expediting process adjustments. These steps are crucial to achieving the green and low-carbon transformation of the industry.

Abstract:The steel industry is a major source of CO 2 emissions, and thus, the mitigation of carbon emissions is the most pressing challenge in this sector. In this paper, international environmental governance in the steel industry is reviewed, and the current state of development of low‐carbon technologies is discussed. Additionally, low‐carbon pathways for the steel industry at the current time are proposed, emphasizing prevention and treatment strategies. Furthermore, the prospects of low‐carbon technologies are explored from the perspective of transitioning the energy structure to a “carbon–electricity–hydrogen” relationship. Overall, steel enterprises should adopt hydrogen‐rich metallurgical technologies that are compatible with current needs and process flows in the short term, based on the carbon substitution with hydrogen (prevention) and the CCU (CO 2 capture and utilization) concepts (treatment). Additionally, the capture and utilization of CO 2 for steelmaking, which can assist in achieving short‐term emission reduction targets but is not a long‐term solution, is discussed. In conclusion, in the long term, the carbon metallurgical process should be gradually supplanted by a hydrogen–electric synergistic approach, thus transforming the energy structure of existing steelmaking processes and attaining near‐zero carbon emission steelmaking technology.

Abstract:The development of China's iron and steel industry (ISI) is an important indication of China's industrialization. This paper analyses the industry from the perspectives of historical retrospect, international comparison and sustainable development. We find that China's ISI has made huge progress at the technical level. During the same period of time its over-consumption of resources and impact on the environment has dropped. However, compared with other main developed steel producers, there is still a big gap. Besides, its openness is still much lower than those of other countries.
