Abstract:The iron and steel production industry entails high resource and energy consumption and generates a serious amount of waste and pollution. The need to conserve energy and reduce emissions underlines the importance of correctly and comprehensively evaluating the iron and steel industrial systems. Properly evaluating the utilization levels of resources and energy is one of the important tasks. In this publication I introduce a thermodynamic exergy analysis method to analyze and evaluate iron and steel industrial systems. The utilization levels of resources and energy are evaluated by comparing the result of the exergy calculation for the traditional production chain and for the material and energy recycling eco-industrial chain. The systemic problems are thus revealed and measures for improvement are proposed, providing a theoretical basis for planning and construction of iron and steel eco-industrial parks. ©2009 IEEE.

Abstract:As a basic raw material industry, metallurgical industry is crucial for national economy and defense construction. Its development level reflects the industrialization process of a country. The metallurgical industry currently faces multiple constraints in terms of resource, energy, and environment. To address these constraints, green metallurgy is the only way and can create a sustainable development mode for future development of the metallurgical industry in China. Considering the background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, domestic and international dual circulation, as well as supply-side structural reforms, we analyze the current status and development trend of steel and nonferrous metals in China and abroad, and review the development status of metallurgical technologies. Moreover, we examine the innovative development of green metallurgy from the perspective of resource, energy, and environment, and summarize several major problems. Based on the prediction and potential analysis, we present the major strategic demand for green metallurgy and propose the following countermeasures: enhancing the strategic position of the metallurgical industry, developing disruptive technologies for waste-free metallurgy, deploying major innovation projects regarding resource and energy substitution as well as control of environmental pollution and carbon emission, implementing green metallurgy policy and standards, and creating an innovative talent training system and science popularization platforms.

Abstract:Green metallurgical technology, as an environmentally friendly and efficient metallurgical method, is increasingly becoming a global research focus in the metallurgical industry. This paper reviews the definition, essence, historical evolution, significance, and application fields of green metallurgical technology, and deeply analyzes the current development status, major achievements, and challenges faced by green metallurgical technology worldwide. On this basis, the paper discusses the innovative directions and emerging technologies of green metallurgical technology and introduces its practical applications in the steel industry, non-ferrous metal smelting, and environmental protection with specific examples. Finally, the paper looks ahead to the future development trends of green metallurgical technology, analyzes policy support and industrial prospects, and emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and technology exchange. The research aims to provide references and lessons for promoting the development of green metallurgical technology.

Abstract:For the realization of a sustainable society, the number of environmentally friendly products introduced in the recent decades has increased in iron and steel products. Such products are compatible with environmental regulations, are preferable from the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) viewpoint and save energy when used in the final products because of their improved properties. Hydro‐forming technology simplifies the production process, of automotive parts and reduces the parts' weight, contributing to an improvement in the fuel consumption rate of automobiles. In the steel‐refining process, reduction of slag emission is a key issue and is accomplished by improvements in dephosporization efficiency and the recycling of the refining slag as in the multiple refining converter (MURC) process. Electromagnetic casting reduces the number of defects in hot coils produced from the slab cast by its application and has the possibility of eliminating the slab surface treatment, which saves energy. Control of non‐metallic inclusions and segregation are now utilized for the generation of steel properties more suitable for environmental concerns. Hydrogen gas generation by using coke oven gas and waste plastic recycling by using a coke oven also contribute toward creating a sustainable society.

Abstract:The technology of ferrous metals is well established. The use of iron and steel, in particular, is considerable and widespread. However, the processing of these materials is resource intensive and generates considerable pollutants, despite continual development. To maintain the use of these popular and versatile materials in the future will necessitate an increased attention to reductions in the consumption of natural resources and power, and greater sensitivity to the environment. This paper presents guidelines for ecological design of engineering product and processing of iron and steel in order to encourage greater processing and recycling efficiencies. It also describes the use of life-cycle analysis as a technique to assess the impact of change on society. The techniques are illustrated through the application of automobile manufacture and use. It goes further to stress the importance of relevant education in the principles of edodesign as fundamental to the effective implementation. The paper concludes with recommendations for the future.

Abstract:Currently, green development and sustainable development have become a global consensus. In March 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the sixth comprehensive assessment report Climate Change 2023, which pointed out that greenhouse gas emissions are currently at the highest level in human history, and the global temperatures has been about 1.1 higher than that before industrialization. In July, 2023, the government of China also emphasized that the construction of ecological civilization in China has entered a critical period with carbon emission reduction as the focus. According to the survey, the steel industry in China has the highest carbon emission in manufacturing industry, and it is also one of the most important areas for China to deal with climate change. Based on the basic principle of blast furnace iron making, this paper first analyzes the causes of high emissions in the steel industry, and draws the conclusion that hydrogen metallurgy technology must be developed to achieve low-carbon development; Then, depending on different energy endowments, the differences in metallurgical technology between China and other countries are analyzed, and brief conclusions and suggestions are given on the basis of analyzing the challenges faced by low-carbon development of Chinas steel industry. This study provides insights into the importance of hydrogen metallurgy technology and enhance our understanding of how to achieve low-carbon development in Chinas iron and steel industry.

Abstract:The metal industry (MI) is the largest energy consumer and producer of environmental pollution within the industrial sector in China. This paper investigated the sustainability of China's metal industry since the 21th century through an overview and an analysis of green total-factor productivity (GTFP) of this sector. The results showed the following: (1) since the beginning of the 21th century, the scale of China's MI expanded rapidly. However, the rapid development of this sector relies on an extensive mode that has triggered off a series of resources and environmental problems. The promotion of green development in this sector becomes urgently. (2) The GTFP of China's MI increased from 2000 to 2015, and technological progress (or technological innovation) was the key driver. The GTFP growth of the mining and processing of ferrous metal ores occurred due to technological progress and efficiency improvements. In other industries, the GTFP growth mainly resulted from technological progress/innovation. (3) The industries involved in the mining and processing of ferrous and nonferrous metal ores were on the state of increasing returns to scale, the returns to scale of the smelting and pressing of nonferrous metals and the manufacture of metal products transformed from increasing to constant, and the returns to scale of the smelting and pressing of ferrous metals experienced three states: increasing, decreasing, and constant.

Abstract:Production of metals stands for 40% of all industrial greenhouse gas emissions, 10% of the global energy consumption, 3.2 billion tonnes of minerals mined, and several billion tonnes of by-products every year. Therefore, metals must become more sustainable. A circular economy model does not work, because market demand exceeds the available scrap currently by about two-thirds. Even under optimal conditions, at least one-third of the metals will also in the future come from primary production, creating huge emissions. Although the influence of metals on global warming has been discussed with respect to mitigation strategies and socio-economic factors, the fundamental materials science to make the metallurgical sector more sustainable has been less addressed. This may be attributed to the fact that the field of sustainable metals describes a global challenge, but not yet a homogeneous research field. However, the sheer magnitude of this challenge and its huge environmental effects, caused by more than 2 billion tonnes of metals produced every year, make its sustainability an essential research topic not only from a technological point of view but also from a basic materials research perspective. Therefore, this paper aims to identify and discuss the most pressing scientific bottleneck questions and key mechanisms, considering metal synthesis from primary (minerals), secondary (scrap), and tertiary (re-mined) sources as well as the energy-intensive downstream processing. Focus is placed on materials science aspects, particularly on those that help reduce CO2 emissions, and less on process engineering or economy. The paper does not describe the devastating influence of metal-related greenhouse gas emissions on climate, but scientific approaches how to solve this problem, through research that can render metallurgy fossil-free. The content is considering only direct measures to metallurgical sustainability (production) and not indirect measures that materials leverage through their properties (strength, weight, longevity, functionality).
Impact of hydrogen metallurgy on the current iron and steel industry: A comprehensive material-exergy-emission flow analysis

Abstract:The development of hydrogen metallurgy holds enormous significance in facilitating the low-carbon and environmentally sustainable transition of iron and steel industries. However, there is a lack of research on the impact of implementing hydrogen metallurgy on the downstream process and even the whole process. To fill this research gap, a model that considers specific internal reactions of steelmaking process was developed utilizing the bottom-up approach. Subsequently, by integrating the hydrogen metallurgy process with the traditional long process and short process, the energy intensity, exergy intensity and carbon emission intensity were quantitatively analyzed from multiple viewpoints. The results of the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) exhibit a degree of similarity, with an increase in directly reduced iron (DRI) addition, resulting in an insufficient heat and an increase in process energy consumption, exergy loss, and carbon emissions. But there are also some subtle differences, such as oxygen consumption. Following the integration of hydrogen metallurgy, the energy intensity and exergy intensity of the BF-BOF process increase 11.984 kgce/t-CS and 3.083 × 10 2 MJ/t-CS, respectively. However, the carbon emission intensity decreased by 46.514 kg/t-CS. The integrated Chinese-style short process has the lowest carbon emission intensity of 879.664 kg/t-CS at 40% DRI and 60% scrap. Nevertheless, the energy intensity and exergy intensity have increased by 27.383 kgce/t-CS and 42.012 × 10 2 MJ/t-CS respectively compared to their initial values. It is noteworthy that the process of hydrogen production plays a significant role in mitigating the exergy intensity and carbon emission intensity.

Abstract:The metallurgy industry consumes a considerable amount of coal and fossil fuels, and its carbon dioxide emissions are increasing every year. Replacing coal with renewable, carbon-neutral biomass for metallurgical production is of great significance in reducing global carbon consumption. This study describes the current state of research in biomass metallurgy in recent years and analyzes the concept and scientific principles of biomass metallurgy. The fundamentals of biomass pretreatment technology and biomass metallurgy technology were discussed, and the industrial application framework of biomass metallurgy was proposed. Furthermore, the economic and social advantages of biomass metallurgy were analyzed to serve as a reference for the advancement of fundamental theory and industrial application of biomass metallurgy.

Abstract:Finite or scarce metal supplies, rising demand, declining ore grades, and prospects of creating a climate-friendly metallurgical industry pose both a challenge and an opportunity to revitalize metals production through sustainable technology, innovations, and informed public policies. The rapid rise in metal consumption, faster than the population growth, challenges both the supply-demand balance and international environmental goals. Depletion of green technology critical metals, with known metal reserves unlikely to last more than half a century, emphasizes the need for increased substitutions, recycling, and reuse efforts. In the past, organized research and serendipity empowered us to innovate manufacturing processes and develop new alloys that fulfilled important societal needs. However, a renewed emphasis on metals research and development is required to meet new and future challenges where the use of critical metals is optimized, and metal sustainability is taken into account. While green technologies offer hope for a cleaner future, scale-up concerns and higher costs of these metals inhibit their widespread use. Current mitigation strategies fall short of Paris Agreement goals, but using advanced high-strength steels could significantly cut total steel usage and greenhouse gas emissions. Ensuring long-term reliance on metals necessitates finding a delicate balance between the challenges facing the metals industry and the multitude of technical and political factors important for their resolution. Engaging and educating the younger generation, particularly Generation Z, policymakers, and industry leaders, is necessary to effectively map out a path forward to revitalize the metals industry.

Abstract:The iron and steel industry is the largest carbon emitter in China’s manufacturing sector and one of the most important fields in the country’s response to climate change. This paper aims to explain the current situation, technological pathways, and future direction of green and low-carbon development of the iron and steel industry. According to the carbon emissions of the iron and steel industry, this paper analyzes the relationship between steelmaking technologies and carbon emissions, as well as the transformation trend of the world’s iron and steel industry, finding that China’s iron and steel industry faces both opportunities and challenges. Steel scrap recycling and electric furnace steelmaking technologies, re-electrification, hydrogen metallurgy, resource recycling and by-products, and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) are the main technologies tailored to the transformation pathways, and the optimization of energy consumption structure is an important direction for future development. Therefore, this paper believes that clean energy, as a guarantee for carbon mitigation, will play an increasingly important role in the process towards achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals (the “dual carbon” goals), in addition to the transformation of metallurgical technologies.

Abstract:With the continuous industrialization and urbanization in China, the energy saving, emission reduction and environmental protection have become increasingly significant issues to be addressed in modern society. As a carbon-intensive and energy-intensive industry, the iron and steel industry faces great pressure especially in the context that China has pledged to peak its carbon emission by 2030. Nowadays the output of pig iron and crude steel in China has accounted for half of global capacity and during the production of these products, substantial solid wastes including iron tailings, blast furnace slags and steel slags have been discharged. The timely and efficient disposal of these three kinds of solid wastes has been severe problems and consequently, numerous strategies and technologies have been developed. These routes could be generally divided into the large-scale extensive utilization style and the small-scale high-value utilization style. In this study, these routes were first systemically reviewed and the fundamental principles were analysed and then the promising strategies were summarized and predicted. Upon reasonable treatment, these solid wastes could not only reduce the environmental impact but also contribute to valuable resources for modern industry.

Abstract:The steel sector currently accounts for 7% of global energy-related CO2 emissions and requires deep reform to disconnect from fossil fuels. Here, we investigate the market competitiveness of one of the widely considered decarbonisation routes for primary steel production: green hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore followed by electric arc furnace steelmaking. Through analysing over 300 locations by combined use of optimisation and machine learning, we show that competitive renewables-based steel production is located nearby the tropic of Capricorn and Cancer, characterised by superior solar with supplementary onshore wind, in addition to high-quality iron ore and low steelworker wages. If coking coal prices remain high, fossil-free steel could attain competitiveness in favourable locations from 2030, further improving towards 2050. Large-scale implementation requires attention to the abundance of suitable iron ore and other resources such as land and water, technical challenges associated with direct reduction, and future supply chain configuration.

Abstract:Current energy conservation and emissions reduction strategies in iron and steel industry were reviewed. Since foundry industry is one of the major source of energy consumption and pollution emission (especially CO2), issues concerning energy-saving and emission-reduction have been raised by governments and the industry. Specialists from around the world carried out multidimensional analyses and evaluation on the potentials in energy conservation and emissions reduction in iron and steel industry, and proposed various kinds of analyzing models. The primary measures mainly focus on the targeted policies formulation and also on clean and high-efficient technologies development. The differences and similarities in energy conservation and emission reduction in foundry industry between China and other countries were discussed, while, the future development trend was also pointed out.
