Abstract:The Chinese people on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits use the same modern standard Chinese as the communication tool,but there is big difference on the translation of the same foreigner’s names.This problem seems to be a pure language one.It’s the inevitable phenomenon of different Chinese characters when the Chinese people on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits choose phonetic symbols to translate foreigners’ names.In fact,this is not a problem of pure character usage.It deeply reflects Chinese people’s language psychology and the delicate psychological difference on the attitude of the Chinese people on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits toward the traditional Chinese culture and the exotic ones.The transliteration characters used on the foreigners’names in Taiwan richly embody the mentality of great kingdom in the traditional Chinese culture with the features of egocentric and ownership of all.With the fading of traditional Chinese culture,the transliteration characters used on the foreigners’names on the mainland of China embody an open multi-variant cultural mentality.
