Abstract:Objective: To explore the contribution of current and 24 hour recalled pain ratings in assessing conditions of chronic neuropathic pain patients. Methods: 130 patients were asked to rate their current pain and pain at its worst, least and average during past 24 hours. We described the extent to which the various pain ratings contributed to overall pain interference and depression. Results: Hierarchical regression showed that past-24-hour worst pain, average pain, current pain and past-24-hour least pain made an additional 4.4%,4.2%,2% and 0.3% of the variance in predicting pain interference when the other ratings were controlled.Past-24-hour average pain, least pain and worst pain made an additional 2.4%,0.6% and 0.1% of the variance in predicting depression mood while no contribution from current pain. Conclusion: Ratings of past-24-hour average pain, rather than current pain, might better reflect the overall experience of pain and its impact on function and mood in chronic neuropathic pain patients.
