Development,Reliability and Validity of the Chinese version of Buss & Perry Aggression Questionnaire

Abstract:Objective Revise and assess the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of Buss & Perry aggression questionnaire(AQ-CV).Methods The AQ-CV,which was translated and revised based on the results of previous studies,was administered in multi-stage,stratified random samples of 602 rural residents and 546 urban residents aged 18 years or older,and 628 university students.Community respondents with a middle education or higher were randomly assigned to either complete the instrument on their own or to have the instrument administered by an interviewer,and university students(who all self-completed the scale) were randomly assigned to complete the instrument anonymously or to sign the instrument.The test-retest reliability was assessed in 503 rural residents,256 urban residents,and 308 university students who were re-administered the questionnaire 5 to 8 days after the first administration.Results The internal consistency of overall sample and the five subscales including physical aggression,verbal aggression,anger,hostility and self-aggressiom were good to excellent(Cronbach's alphas 0.60 ～ 0.89) and the test-retest reliability was also good(intraclass correlation coefficients 0.57 ～ 0.81).There were significant differences in the AQ-CV scores among the three groups and between the respondents with and without prior active suicidal ideation(P < 0.05).However,There were no significant differences between community respondents who self-completed the scale and those administered the scale by an interviewer,or between students who anonymously completed the scale and those who signed the questionnaire(P > 0.05).Conclusions The reliability and validity of the AQ-CV are satisfactory in communities and universities.
