Abstract:The performances of radio-over-fiber (RoF) link with fixed incident optical power on photodetector (PD) are improved through carrier suppression method. Firstly, a precise analytical model is proposed to quantify the relationship between the improvement of link gain, noise figure (NF), spur-free dynamic range (SFDR) and the carrier suppression ratio x, in which, the modulation index m is fully considered for the first time to our knowledge. Then the optimum optical carrier-to-sideband ratio (CSR) for RoF link performances in both double-sideband and single-sideband modulation is obtained from the optimum x for the link performances. Finally the experiments with the carrier subtraction method realized by Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) are carried out and the experimental results show good agreement with the simulation ones.

Abstract:A numerical analysis is presented on the long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system employing fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) cascades based on one-pump FOPA model with Raman Effect taken into account. The end-to-end equalization scheme is applied to optimize the system features in terms of proper output powers and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in all the channels. The numerical results show that—through adjusting the fiber spans along with the number of FOPAs as well as the channel powers at the terminals in a prescribed way—the transmission distance and system performance can be optimized. By comparing the results generated by different lengths of fiber span, we come to the optimal span length to achieve the best transmission performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison among the long-haul WDM transmission systems employing different inline amplifiers, namely, FOPA, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Fiber Raman Amplifier (FRA). FOPA demonstrates its advantage over the other two in terms of system features.

Abstract:The Faster-Than-Nyquist(FTN)signaling-based scheme is a high spectral efficiency transmission scheme for largecapacity optical communication systems.This paper reviews the latest FTN signaling-based transmission schemes in the world,such as cascaded multi-modulus blind equalization FTN,digital FTN and Soft Output FTN(SOFTN).The cascaded multimodulus blind equalization FTN can effectively suppress noise and inter-channel crosstalk,the digital FTN can effectively simplify the system structure and the SOFTN has the highest spectral efficiency.It analyzes and compares in detail their performances and principles,which can be used as the basis for the design of future long-range large-capacity fiber-optic communication systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the high-speed free-space optical (FSO) transmission over 1 km using 20 Gbit/s advanced coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals. The constellation diagram and the bit error rate (BER) are measured. The receiving sensitivity of the FSO transmission is about-23.9 dBm at the BER of 3.8x10(-3).

Abstract:With the development of the space exploration and satellite communications, the data transmission at broadband and long distance are in increasing demand. To enhance the signal transmission capability from the satellite to the earth over deep space, multiple radars from distributed ground stations at cooperative mode might be a promising solution. Broadband beamforming with high efficiency over long distance fiber optic transmission links is investigated in the paper. To achieve phase stable transmission for broadband signal, fast active optical compensation is adopted by phase locking each fiber optic link with a separate wavelength to discriminate the time jitter induced phase variation. By matching the time delays between the different channels, the signal-noise ratio (SNR) of the beamformed broadband signal is improved significantly. In the experiment, a root mean square (RMS) of time delay variations of 0.86 ps and Allan deviation of $1.74\times 10 ^{-13}$ for the carrier transmission in the phase locked fiber link over 120 km is achieved, and broadband fiber optical beamforming with data rate over 2 Gbit/s is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:Two fiber Bragg grating based techniques are proposed to reduce the fiber dispersion effect on the RF power penalty in ROF system. One is to realize the vestige sideband modulation by the narrow-band fiber Bragg grating, and the other is to use the chirped fiber grating to compensate the fiber dispersion. The transmission performance of the ROF system under both these techniques and the traditional double sideband modulation are experimentally measured and compared. The results show that the dispersion effect is effectively reduced by these two techniques and hence the transmission performances are greatly improved.

Abstract:In the design of fiber links for both continental and transoceanic optical communication systems, the optimization of span length is of high importance from both performance and cost perspectives. In this work, the maximization of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is investigated by optimizing the span length in wideband (up to 4.5-THz) Nyquist-spaced optical fiber communication systems. A simple and accurate closed-form expression of the optimal span length is provided, and a quick estimation of SNR is also described for practically feasible and cost-effective span length values.

Abstract:As the capacity and the transmission distance of medium-reach optical fiber communication systems continue to increase, it is a major trend in demanding lower optical link budgets while maintaining the quality of signal transmission. We experimentally compared the transmission performance of the Kramers-Kronig (KK) and the coherent receivers in a 20-Gbaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) system over a -thousand-kilometer standard single-mode fiber (SMF) link. Experimental results show that the KK receiver requires lower cost and simpler structure, and behaves similarly with the coherent receiver in the transmission under 1260 km, despite higher transmitted power and computational complexity.

Channel Characterization of IRS-assisted Resonant Beam Communication Systems

Abstract:To meet the growing demand for data traffic, spectrum-rich optical wireless communication (OWC) has emerged as a key technological driver for the development of 6G. The resonant beam communication (RBC) system, which employs spatially separated laser cavities as the transmitter and receiver, is a high-speed OWC technology capable of self-alignment without tracking. However, its transmission through the air is susceptible to losses caused by obstructions. In this paper, we propose an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted RBC system with the optical frequency doubling method, where the resonant beam in frequency-fundamental and frequency-doubled is transmitted through both direct line-of-sight (LoS) and IRS-assisted channels to maintain steady-state oscillation and enable communication without echo-interference, respectively. Then, we establish the channel model based on Fresnel diffraction theory under the near-field optical propagation to analyze the transmission loss and frequency-doubled power analytically. Furthermore, communication power can be maximized by dynamically controlling the beam-splitting ratio between the two channels according to the loss levels encountered over air. Numerical results validate that the IRS-assisted channel can compensate for the losses in the obstructed LoS channel and misaligned receivers, ensuring that communication performance reaches an optimal value with dynamic ratio adjustments.

Abstract:The optical fiber communication network is the important infrastructure for the modern information society. Thanks to the reduction of fiber loss, the improvement of transceiver devices by electro-optical-electrical conversion, the development of modulation technology and the introduction of digital signal processing, the capacity of optical fiber transmission has been greatly improved. In recent years, due to the large capacity demand of data-centers and the next-generation wireless communication, metro and short-range transmission scenarios below 100 km have attracted lots of attention based on direct detection. The historical evolution of optical fiber communication systems was firstly reviewed, then the limiting factors in the direct detection system were analyzed. Furthermore, the principle and system configuration of one-dimensional to four-dimensional self-coherent technology were introduced, and finally, the low-cost evolution trend of the optical coherent transmission system was prospected.

Abstract:Coherent optical fiber systems can achieve long-distance, large-capacity and high data-rate transmissions. The system performance of communication systems is generally evaluated with regard to the data capacity and the transmission reach. In this work, the performance of multi-channel (up to C-band) Nyquist-spaced coherent optical communication systems has been assessed in terms of achievable information rates, transmission distances and signal-to-noise ratios, considering different influencing factors, such as nonlinearity compensation, signal input power and modulation format. Numerical simulations and enhanced Gaussian noise (EGN) model have been carried out for different modulation formats including quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM), 64-QAM and 256-QAM. It is found that in C-band (151-channel) Nyquist-spaced systems, the achievable information rates at the transmission distance of 6000 km are 19.3 Tbit/s for dual-polarization QPSK (DP-QPSK), 30.9 Tbit/s for DP-16QAM, 32.0 Tbit/s for DP-64QAM and 32.2 Tbit/s for DP-256QAM, respectively, when electronic dispersion compensation is applied only. Such achievable information rates can be increased up to 38.3 Tbit/s for DP-16QAM, 47.2 Tbit/s for DP-64QAM and 47.8 Tbit/s for DP-256QAM, respectively, when the nonlinearity compensation is employed.
