Abstract:The interaction between Mo species and a conventionally microsized and particularly nanosized HZSM-5 support was studied by high-resolution multinuclear solid-state NMR techniques. As proved by 27Al and 29Si MAS as well as CP/MAS NMR investigations, this interaction was so strong that the framework aluminum of both microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites could be extracted. With increasing Mo loading, more nonframework aluminum, resonanced at ca. 30 ppm, appeared in the 27Al MAS NMR spectrum of the Mo-loaded nanosized HZSM-5 catalyst. Meanwhile, this strong interaction led to the formation of more new Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines on the nanosized HZSM-5 support than on the microsized HZSM-5 support. The appearance of Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines resulted in fewer active catalysts for the methane dehyro-aromatization. The results of 1H MAS NMR using perfluorotributyl amine as a probe molecule demonstrated that Mo species preferentially reacted with the silanols and nonframework AlOH on the external surface of microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites. In addition, impregnated Mo species remained predominantly on the external surface of the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite, although there was a possibility that they might migrate into the lattice channels of the microsized HZSM-5 zeolite. The migration of some Mo species into the zeolite channels might be beneficial for the conversion of methane to aromatics in the absence of oxygen.

Abstract:Acidity plays a vital role in methane conversion by co-feeding method, which is one of the best strategies to improve the utilization and gentle the reaction conditions of methane. In this work, Zn, Ni, Mo, La, Ga, Fe and Co-impregnated ZSM-5 zeolites have been prepared with the same substitutions to variate the acidities and tested in co-aromatization of methanol with methane. It is demonstrated that the new medium-strong acid sites formed by metal and strong acid sites are the key role to activate methane in co-reaction. Zn-modified ZSM-5 catalyst is preferred to exhibit the best methane conversion of 12%, whose aromatic selectivity increases from 27.2% to 52.2% compared with that of HZSM-5. Besides, the addition of methane further improves the production of high-valued aromatics compared with methanol to aromatics (MTA) reaction.

Abstract:The effect of preparation method. Mo content, pretreatment conditions, space velocity, reaction temperature on the preformance of methane aromatization under oxygen-free conditions over HZSM-5 supported Mo catalyst has been studied, the effect of carbon deposition on catalyst after reaction and regeneration by carbon burning with O2 was investigated. It was found that the initial activity of catalysts prepared by grinding technique was higher than that of catalysts prepared by impregnating technique, but the activity of the former decreased quickly with reaction time increased, and decreased obviously after regeneration, while the activity of the latter was similar to that of fresh catalysts. The catalyst with Mo content of 3. 5%��4. 0% showed the best aromatization activity. Decreasing space velocity and increasing reaction temperature improved the aromatization activity. With reaction time increased, the selectivity for ethylene enhanced while selectivity for benzene decreased. Furthermore, XPS results suggested that the most of Mo6+ in the catalysts prepared by impregnating method dispersed in the framework of HZSM-5 zeolite and those of grinding method dispersed on the surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, the carbon content on the catalyst surface increased rapidly, and Mo6+ in the ground catalysts was reduced to Mo0 after reaction for 4 h. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that molybdena carbene with configuration of MoO3 = CH2 is an initial product of methane aromatization reaction.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of Mo/H[B]ZSM-5 has been investigated for methane non-oxidative aromatization and compared with that of a Mo/H[Al]ZSM-5 catalyst. It is found that the non-oxidative aromatization of methane proceeds only in the presence of weak acidic sites without the participation of strong acidic sites. Coke is found to be the main cause of the rapid decrease in the activity of Mo/H[B]ZSM-5 catalysts.

Abstract:The effects of reaction temperature, pretreatment method and Cr loading on methane aromatization over Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst under non-oxidizing condition were investigated. The results indicate that when Cr/Mo molar ratio is 0.07, the CH4 conversion and aromatics selectivity reach 11.6% and 97-2% respectively. Raising temperature is beneficial to the CH4 conversion and a 15.8% of CH4 conversion is obtained at 1 023 K. The catalyst pretreated with N2 is better than that with H2 and CH4. The NH3-TPD-MS results show that the Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst has more sites of strong acidity and mid-strong acidity than Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. The results of decomposition of isopropanol show that the surface acidity on Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 is increased at high temperature. This might be one of the reasons that the activity for methane aromatization is increased over Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:Combining the H-1 MAS NMR, XPS, XRF and TG measurements with the catalyst evaluation, the effect of silanation of HZSM-5 zeolite on the catalytic performance of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in methane dehydro-aromatization was investigated. The results showed that the silanation of HZSM-5 zeolite resulted in not only the removal of the external acid sites but also the dealumiantion of HZSM-5 zeolite, which led to an improvement in the catalytic performance of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in the methane dehydro-aromatization owing to the suppression of formation of carbon deposited on Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:Mo/HZSM-5 is a typical catalyst for methane dehydro-aromatization in the absence of oxygen. The catalyst was prepared with impregnation method in previous studies. In this paper, mechanical mixing, solid reaction and microwave methods were used for Mo/HZSM-5 preparation. In addition, the catalytic performance of the catalyst for methane dehydro-aromatization was investigated. Compared with impregnated Mo/HZSM-5 sample, the catalyst samples prepared with mechanical mixing, solid reaction and microwave methods show higher selectivity for aromatics and lower selectivity for coke. BET, XRD and NH3TPD experimental results exhibited that the location of Mo species is heavily dependent on the preparation method. It is suggested that the Mo species located on the external surface of the zeolite is more efficient for methane dehydro-aromatization, and at the same time suppresses the coke formation.

Abstract:There has been a general agreement that methane aromatization catalyzed by Mo/HZSM-5 is a promising route for producing aromatics in an oxygen-free atmosphere. A series of catalysts was prepared by microwave heating, the oxidation state, and location of the Mo species were analyzed by XRD, and the surface distribution of catalysts and form by carbon deposit of catalysts after reaction were studied by TEM. Methane aromatization was an endothermic equilibrium-controlled reaction, and the high temperature was required to yield meaningful conversions into aromatics during the reaction. The size of Mo species was 20-30 nm. The form of carbon deposit in methane aromatization was the hollowed carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:The effect of oxygen on aromatization of methane over Mo/HZSM-5 zeolite was studied. It was found that there exists a threshold value of the oxygen concentration. The durability of Mo/HZSM-5 zeolite in aromatization of methane is greatly improved by the added oxygen when the oxygen concentration is lower than the threshold value; otherwise, the total oxidation of methane takes place. The Mo/HZSM-5 samples after aromatization of methane in the presence of oxygen was characterized by UV-Raman spectroscopy and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS). It was disclosed that the amount of coke, the carburization degree of molybdenum species and the wavelength of a band at 520 similar to 580 nm in the LIFS of Mo/HZSM-5 zeolite decrease monotenously with the rising of oxygen concentration. It was suggested that the variation of the LIFS band with the oxygen concentration originates from the difference in the caburization degree of molybdenum species. The band at similar to580 nm in LIFS is tentatively assigned to MoOxCy/HZSM-5 and the band at 520 nm to MoO3/HZSM-5. So MoOxCy/HZSM-5 can be suggested to be the active phase for aromatization of methane over Mo/HZSM-5 in the presence of oxygen.

Abstract:TEOS as the exotic silicon source was used to modify HZSM-5 zeolite by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a vapor phase flow system. Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts prepared by using silicon-modified zeolite showed higher activity and stability than those prepared by using non-modified HZSM-5 zeolite in methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions. The effect of silanation on the acid sites and the interaction between the Mo species and the acid sites have been studied by using FT-IR, NH3-TPD and 1H MAS NMR. The exotic silicon species not only selectively covered and eliminated almost all of the Brönsted acid sites on the external surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, but also affected the internal Brönsted acid sites, which are close to the channel openings. This results in an obvious decrease in the number of Brönsted acid sites per unit cell. In the MDA reaction, the Brönsted acid sites provided active sites not only for the polymerization and aromatization of the active intermedia, but also for the formation of carbonaceous deposits, which is a crucial factor leading to the deactivation of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. Only a small fraction of Brönsted acid sites, ca. 0.6 per unit cell, was required to accomplish the aromatization, and the superfluous free Brönsted acid sites would cause severe carbonaceous deposits under non-oxidative condition at a temperature as high as 973K.

Abstract:Complete reduction of Mo species interacting strongly with a HZSM-5 zeolite support in methane is difficult, and the reduction product, MoCxOy, is a key active species in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) under nonoxidative conditions. Pretreatment in H2 at 623 K could lead to topotactic transformation of the Mo species from hexagonally close packing (hcp) to face-centered cubic (fcc) structures; the fcc MoCxOy species are more active and more stable than the hcp MoCxOy in MDA. After initial H2 pretreatment at 623 K, followed by a CH4-treatment, the Mo species on a MoO3/HZSM-5 catalyst prepared by mechanical mixing was reduced and carburized to form fcc α-MoC1−x species on the extra surface of the zeolite. Methane molecules activated by the α-MoC1−x were converted mainly into carbon deposits instead of benzene. Both the most active Mo species and the neighboring Brönsted acid sites are essential in obtaining a perfect catalyst in the reaction of MDA.

Abstract:The influence of Zn content, reaction temperature and pretreatment conditions on a Zn-modified Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst for methane aromatization were studied. It was found that the addition of Zn promoted the reaction. Methane conversion of 10.9% and aromatics selectivity of 96.7% were obtained with a Zn/Mo molar ratio of 0.03 and N 2 pretreatment at 973 K. The results of isopropanol decomposition, NH 3 -TPD and TG-DTA suggest that the addition of Zn decrease the acidity of the catalyst, which may be the reason for the high activity on the Mo-Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:The effects of particle size of HZSM-5 zeolite and silicon sources for preparation of HZSM-5 on the reaction performance of methane dehydro-aromatization over Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst were studied by changing the synthesis conditions and systems. The results showed that the catalytic performance of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in which the HZSM-5 was synthesized via soluble water-glass was better than that of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in which the HZSM-5 was synthesized via silica sol. H-1 MAS NMR measurements revealed that the amount of Bronsted acid sites in the former is more than that in the latter. In addition, by using the HZSM-5 zeolite with smaller particle size, the corresponding Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst shows better catalytic stability.

Abstract:The dehydro‐aromatization of methane over a Mo‐modified penta‐sil type high‐silica zeolite containing phosphoric and rare earth oxide (abbreviated as Mo/HZRP‐1) was investigated. As a modification of HZSM‐5, HZRP‐1 is also a good support for the preparation of Mo‐based zeolite catalysts, and is active for methane dehydro‐aromatization. Mo/HZRP‐1 catalysts are more active at high Mo loadings compared with Mo/HZSM‐5 catalysts. 27 Al MAS NMR spectra of Mo/HZRP‐1 reveal that there are two kinds of framework Al in HZRP‐1. It is suggested that only the tetrahedral coordinated Al atoms in the form of Al–O–Si species in the zeolite, in the proton forms, are responsible for the formation of aromatics.
Study on Bifunctionality of Mo/HZSM-5 Catalysts for Methane Dehydro-Aromatization under Non-oxidative Condition

Abstract:The optimum Mo/(H + ) ratio per unit cell of the active precursors in Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts for methane dehydro-aromatization, measured by 1 H MAS NMR, was found to be about 1 when adjusting the acid sites by altering either the SiO2/Al2O3 ratios or the Mo loading. This implies that a concerted interaction between the Mo species and the Bronsted acid sites probably features the bifunctionality of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. On the other hand, it was found that the driving force for Mo species to move into the HSZM-5 zeolite channels and the interaction between the Mo species and the Bronsted acid sites are closely and proportionably related with the amount of Bronsted acid sites per unit cell.

Abstract:Mo/HZSM-5 and Cu–Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts for the non-oxidative aromatization of methane have been prepared by microwave heating method. The effects of Mo loading, the molar ratio of Cu/Mo and preparation method on the catalytic performance of catalysts were studied. The results were compared with those for the methane aromatization over catalysts prepared by conventional heating. Both two kinds of catalysts have the maximum methane conversion when the Mo loading is 6%. The catalysts prepared by microwave heating exhibited higher selectivity to benzene than that prepared by conventional heating. The addition of metal Cu to Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst prepared by microwave heating enhanced the lifetime of catalyst, and gave rise to a little increase in methane conversion. The molar ratio of Cu/Mo influenced the methane conversion, and the maximum value was attained when Cu/Mo=0.05, whereas no significant influence on the benzene selectivity was observed with the increase molar ratio of Cu/Mo. N2 adsorption results showed that the catalysts prepared by microwave heating have the larger surface area and the similar pore volume compared with the catalysts prepared by conventional heating. This fact revealed that the more Mo species located on the outer surface of catalysts prepared by microwave heating is the main reason why they have better catalytic performance. XRD analysis indicated that the Mo species are highly dispersed on HZSM-5 zeolite. The addition of Cu influenced the dispersion. The actual active phase Mo2C can be identified on the catalyst surface after reaction. TEM analysis revealed the carbonaceous deposition to have the form of carbon nanotube after reaction, with a uniform size range of 10–20nm. TG analysis indicated that carbonaceous deposition on the catalysts prepared by microwave heating is lower than that by conventional heating, and the metal Cu further prompts the stability of catalyst. Most of the carbonaceous deposition on catalysts prepared by microwave heating is formed at low temperature and it is easy to burn-off. Coke accumulation at high temperature is the main reason of catalyst deactivation. The carbonaceous deposition formed on the catalysts for non-oxidative aromatization of methane is different from those formed on the catalysts for partial oxidation of methane.

Abstract:The aromatization of methane over a Mo/HZSM‐5 catalyst was carried out in the presence of oxygen. It is shown that the addition of a small amount of oxygen is beneficial to improve the durability of the catalyst. UV‐Raman spectra disclose that the carbonaceous deposits formed on the HZSM‐5 are mainly polyolefinic and aromatic, while that on the Mo/HZSM‐5 is mainly polyaromatic. The small amount of O 2 added may partly remove the coke deposits on the active sites and keep the catalyst as MoO x C y /HZSM‐5, thus resulting in an improvement of the catalytic performance of the Mo/HZSM‐5 catalyst.

Abstract:The effects of HZSM5 Si/Al ratio, cobalt additive and HCl-acidified pretreatment on methane conversion and selectivity to aromatics have been investigated for non-oxidative conversion of methane to aromatics. The HZSM5 (E) with low Si/Al ratio (Si/Al=20) has better methane conversion and benzene selectivity than HZSM5 (D) (Si/Al=55). The synergistic effect is exhibited in 3% Mo-1% Co-HCl/HZSM5 (E) catalyst, on which a high methane conversion of 10.7% can be achieved, in comparison with 5.3% methane conversion on 3% Mo/HZSM5 (E). The catalysts have been characterized by XPS and the reaction mechanism is discussed.
Non-oxidative aromatization of methane by using propane as co-reactant over Mo-Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst

Abstract:The non-oxidative conversion of methane (C-1) into aromatic hydrocarbons by using propane (C-3) as co-reactant over x%Mo+6%Zn/HZSM-5 catalysts was studied. C, conversion was very high, reaching 29%-35%. Selectivity of aromatic products reaches above 80% at 873 K and GHSV=3 L/(g (.) h) with n(C-1)/n(C-3)=1.0. The excellent conversion of C-1 ( 34.8%) was obtained over 0.7%Mo+6%Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst at 873 K and n(C-1)/n(C-3)=1.0. The effects of time-on-stream and n(C-1)/n(C-3) on C-1 and C-3 conversion and the products distribution were analyzed in order to obtain information about C-1 incorporation into the aromatic products and the evolution of different species. C, incorporation was conclusively confirmed by the mass spectral analyses of aromatic products produced in a run with (CH4)-C-13, which shows a significant C-13 enrichment in the C6H6+, C7H8+ and C8H10+ fragments. The methane activation could result from its hydrogen-transfer reaction with alkenes. This process was hoped to provide a novel route for the chemical utilization of natural gas and refinery gas.
