Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff base complexes, (C10H6N2)CNNCRFc, (C10H6N2)CNC6H4NCRFc and (C10H6N2)CNC6H4C6 H4NCRFc (R: H, CH3), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, UV, MS and 1H NMR). The single-crystal X-ray structure is presented for (C10H6N2)CNNCHFc (1). The cyclic voltammograms of complex 1 have shown reversible one-electron oxidation and two-step one-electron reduction.

Abstract:The binuclear ferrocene derivative, Z-1, 2-dimethyl-1, 2-bis (m-ferrocenylphenyl)e hene (Z-DDFP) has been isolated from the mixture of the coupling reaction of m-ferrocenylacetophenone (m-FAP) by the low-valent titanium salts obtained from zinc/titanium tetrachloride in THF. The single crystal X-ray structure of the complex as benzene solvate has been determined and found to be triclinic with cell constants a=7.748(5), b=10.600(7), c=18.550(4)A, α=97.565(5)°, β=98.551(8)°, γ=90.318(8)° and V=1494.2A3. The structure was refined by [least-squares method for 5151 independent reflections with I>3σ(I) to a final R=0.0363 and Rw=0.0523. The two cyclopentadienyl rings in each ferrocenyl unit are approximately parallel. The two phenyl rings are significantly twisted by 66.80° from each other in the stable configuration. Both the ferrocenyl units on the same side of the C=C double bond are not co-planar with a mean dihedral angle of 96.28°. The structural analysis shows that the chain linking two central iron atoms is about 18A, significantly close to those found in some biological models.

Abstract:N-o-Methylphenylferrocenesulfonamide was synthesized from the reaction of ferrocenesulfonyl chloride with o-toluidine. The structure was determined by single-crystal diffraction. Crystal data: monoclinic, P21/c, with unit cell dimensions of a=10.436(2), b=12.377(3), c=12.6431(3) Å, and β=107.42(1)°, V=1558.1(6) Å3, Z=4. The most stable structure of the complex in theory was obtained by the Hartree–Fock SCF of gaussian 98W, and the two results have been compared.

Abstract:Two ferrocene derivatives, namely, 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene and 1,2,1′,2′-bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene, were synthesized in a four-step reaction sequence starting from ferrocene. Friedel–Crafts acylation of ferrocene using succinic anhydride gave mono- or bis(3-carboxypropinoyl)-ferrocene depending on the stoichiometry of succinic anhydride. The reduction of the keto groups to methylene followed by ring-closing using trifluoroacetic anhydride gave 1,2-(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene or 1,2,1′,2′-bis(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene. The diastereomeric mixture of the latter diketones was separated using column chromatography, characterized via single-crystal X-ray analysis, and assigned its stereochemistry. Reduction of the keto groups to methylene under Clemmensen conditions gave homoannular mono- or bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene derivatives. The molecular structure of 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene revealed that the ipso carbon atoms of the cyclopentadienyl group are 0.023(3) Å farther away from Fe(II) compared to the remaining three carbon atoms. Both complexes exhibit lower half-wave oxidation potentials than ferrocene, possibly due to the electron-releasing effects of the tetramethylene bridges.

Abstract:Fifteen new ferrocene derivatives containing 1H-1,2,4-triazole moiety were synthesized in various yields by the condensation of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde with 1-aryl-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazo-1-yl)-propen-1-ones in toluene. Their structures have been confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR, MS and elemental analysis. In addition, the crystal structure of 41 was determined. Abstract:Two new ferrocene derivatives N-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe1) and N-(2-hydroxy-5-chlorophenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe2) have been synthesized to study the effect on electronic, optical and charge transfer properties while changing the electron donating group with electron withdrawing group. The synthesized compounds were characterized by different spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–Vis, (^{mathrm {1}}hbox {H NMR}), (^{mathrm {13}}hbox {C NMR})) and spectrometric (EI) techniques. The geometries for ground and excited states were optimized by density functional theory (DFT/B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) and time-dependent DFT (TD-B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) levels, respectively. The absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra were estimated using TD-B3LYP and TD-wB97XD functionals and 6-31G** basis set for C, H, N, O and LANL2DZ for Fe atoms in dichloromethane.

Abstract:In this study, four ferrocenyl indenyl derivatives, C9H7–C≡C–Fc (1), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–Fc (2), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–C≡C–Fc (3), and C9H7–Ph–C≡C–Fc (4) (where C9H7=indenyl; Fc=C5H5FeC5H4; Ph=C6H5), have been synthesized by Sonogashira and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, and FT-IR, 1H, 13C-NMR, and MS spectroscopic methods, respectively. The molecular structures of 1, 2, and 4 were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Two molecules appeared in the crystal structure of 4, and they interact through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The electrochemical redox potential differences in 1–4 were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and calculations.

Abstract:Two ferrocene-isocoumarin conjugated molecules, methyl 3-ferrocenyl-1-oxo-1H-isochromene-6-carboxylate () and 3,8-bisferrocenylpyrano[3,4-g]isochromene-1,6-dione (), have been synthesized through the acid-prompted regioselective oxidative cyclization from dimethyl 2-(ferrocenylethynyl)terephthalate () and dimethyl 2,5-bis(ferrocenylethynyl)terephthalate (), respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, together with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, shows that the ferrocene-isocoumarin conjugated compounds display better coplanarity than the corresponding ferrocenylethynyl terephthalates. All the compounds exhibit characteristic MLCT, ICT and π-π* transitions in the UV-visible range in solution, and and show higher oscillator strength of the absorption than and , which are verified by time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) theoretical calculations. The electrochemical properties are studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), which are also in accord with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The title compound, [Fe(C5H5)(C18H32N)],was synthesized by the amination of ferrocenecarbaldehyde. In the complex, the two cyclopentadienyl (Cp) rings are almost parallel with a dihedral angle of 1.36 (8)degrees, and are separated by a centroid-centroid distance of 3.299 (2) angstrom. In the crystal, adjacent molecules are linked into a one-dimensional supramolecular structure via weak C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions between the Cp ring H atom and the Cp ring.

Abstract:Condensation of aminomethylferrocene (1) and substituted benzaldehydes resulted in aldimines 2a–c which followed by reduction with sodium borohydride to give 3a–c. N-methylation of 3a–c with HCHO/NaCNBH3/HOAc led to 4a–c. Treatment of 4a–c with sodium palladium tetrachloride in the presence of sodium acetate afforded cleanly cyclopalladated 5a–c in which configurations consisted of the RNRC, SNSC. The preferable activation of CFerrocenyl–H bond over CPhenyl–H bond was also observed. All compounds 2–5 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and 1H NMR. In addition, the molecular structure of 5c was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The possible mechanism for the formation of 5 was also discussed.

Abstract:A novel ferroenyl pyrrolizidine derivative containing cyano groups, 2-(4-methylphenyl)-3-ferrocenyl-4,4-dicyanpyrrolizidine (C26H25FeN3 , Mr=435.34), was synthesized in moderate yields via a facile 1.3-dipolar cycloaddition in refluxing toluene and its crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in monoclinic, space group P21/c with a=10.3792(10), b=11.4485(11), c=19.1243(15), β=109.496(4)°, V=2142.2(3)3, Dc=1.350 g/cm3, μ(MoKα)=0.721 mm-1 , Z=4, T=113(2)K, F(000)=912, the final R=0.0586 and wR=0.1664.

Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff-base complexes, [(C10H6N2)CN(C6H4)nNC(CH3)FcC(CH3)NC6H4) nN(C10H6N2)] (n = 0, 1, 2), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as the starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, vis). The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes have shown reversible one-electronic oxidation and reduction. The derivatives can quench the luminescence of Ru(bpy)3P2+ efficiently, with quenching rate constants of ca 109 mol−1 s−1 dm3 and the quenching process is a bimolecular energy transfer process.

Abstract:The synthesis, oxidation reactions and transition metal complexes of a new ferrocenyl-bisphosphine, [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2] (1), are described. The reaction of bis(dichlorophosphino)ferrocene with four equivalents of ethynylmagnesium bromide resulted in the formation of 1 in 76% yield. The reaction between 1, aqueous H2O2 or elemental sulphur produced bis(oxide) and bis(sulfide) derivatives, [Fe{C5H4P(E)(C≡CH)2}2] (2 E = O, 3 E = S). Reaction of 1 with [Ru(η 6-p-cymene)Cl2]2 yielded a diruthenium complex [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2{RuCl2(η 6-p-cymene)}2] (4). Treatment of 1 with [M(COD)Cl2] (M = Pd, Pt) resulted in [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2{MCl2}] (5 M = Pd, 6 M = Pt). Equimolar reactions between 1 and CuX produced binuclear complexes, [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2{CuX}2] (7 X = Cl, 8 X = Br, 9 X = I).

Abstract:Two novel Fc-MPT conjugated compounds, 3-(ferrocenylethynyl)-10-methylphenothiazine (1) and 3,7-bis(ferrocenylethynyl)-10-methylphenothiazine (2), have been synthesized by Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that 2 displays better coplanarity between the Fc and MPT subunits. The crystal packing reveals that 1 stacks in the same direction between the neighboring molecules by the S center dot center dot center dot H-C (of the Fc moiety) hydrogen bonds, while 2 stacks in an inverse fashion between the adjacent molecules, not only by the S center dot center dot center dot H-C (of the MPT moiety) hydrogen bonds but also by pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Both complexes show MLCT, ICT, and pi -> pi* transitions in the UV-visible range in solution, and 2 has a tremendous bathochromic shift and shows a higher oscillator strength of the absorption, which has been verified by TDDFT theoretical calculations. DFT calculations explain the electrochemistry of the two complexes and show that the larger conjugative effect in 2 leads to the smaller HOMO-LUMO gap (E-g). The differences between 1 and 2 indicate that the structural and conjugative effects have great influence on the electronic properties of the molecules.
