Abstract:The largest coefficient (in absolute value) of a cyclotomic polynomial $\Phi_n$ is called its height $A(n)$. In case $p$ is a fixed prime it turns out that as $q$ and $r$ range over all primes satisfying $p<q<r$, the height $A(pqr)$ assumes a maximum $M(p)$. In 1968, Sister Marion Beiter conjectured that $M(p)\leq (p+1)/2$. In 2009, this was disproved for every $p\ge 11$ by Yves Gallot and Pieter Moree. They proposed a Corrected Beiter Conjecture, namely $M(p)\leq 2p/3$. In 2009, Jia Zhao and Xianke Zhang posted on the arXiv what they thought to be a proof of this conjecture. Their work was never accepted for publication in a journal. However, in retrospect it turns out to be essentially correct, but rather sketchy at some points. Here we supply a lot more details. \par The bound $M(p)\le 2p/3$ allows us to improve some bounds of Bzdęga from 2010 for ternary cyclotomic coefficients. It also makes it possible to determine $M(p)$ exactly for three new primes $p$ and study the fine structure of $A(pqr)$ for them in greater detail.

Abstract:For a fixed prime p, the maximum coefficient (in absolute value) M(p) of the cyclotomic polynomial Φpqr(x), where r and q are free primes satisfying r>q>p exists. Sister Beiter conjectured in 1968 that M(p)≤(p+1)/2. In 2009 Gallot and Moree showed that M(p)≥2p(1−ϵ)/3 for every p sufficiently large. In this article Kloosterman sums (‘cloister man sums’) and other tools from the distribution of modular inverses are applied to quantify the abundancy of counter-examples to Sister Beiter’s conjecture and sharpen the above lower bound for M(p).

Abstract:Zhao established a curious congruence, i.e., for any prime p≥3,∑i+j+k=pi,j,k>01ijk≡−2Bp−3(modp). In this note we prove that for any prime p≥3 and positive integer r,∑i+j+k=pri,j,k∈Pp1ijk≡−2pr−1Bp−3(modpr), where Pn denotes the set of positive integers which are prime to n.

Abstract:Borwein and Choi conjectured that a polynomial $P(x)$ with coefficients $\pm1$ of degree $N-1$ is cyclotomic iff $$P(x)=\pm \Phi_{p_1}(\pm x)\Phi_{p_2}(\pm x^{p_1})\cdots \Phi_{p_r}(\pm x^{p_1p_2\cdots p_{r-1}})$$ where $N=p_1p_2\cdots p_{r}$ and the $p_i$ are primes, not necessarily distinct. Here $\Phi_p(x):=(x^p-1)/(x-1)$ is the $p-$th cyclotomic polynomial. In \cite{1}, they also proved the conjecture for $N$ odd or a power of 2. In this paper we introduce a so-called $E-$transformation, by which we prove the conjecture for a wider variety of cases and present the key as well as a new approach to investigate the conjecture.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:Abstract For $c \in \mathbb {Q}$ , consider the quadratic polynomial map $\varphi _c(z)=z^2-c$ . Flynn, Poonen, and Schaefer conjectured in 1997 that no rational cycle of $\varphi _c$ under iteration has length more than $3$ . Here, we discuss this conjecture using arithmetic and combinatorial means, leading to three main results. First, we show that if $\varphi _c$ admits a rational cycle of length $n \ge 3$ , then the denominator of c must be divisible by $16$ . We then provide an upper bound on the number of periodic rational points of $\varphi _c$ in terms of the number s of distinct prime factors of the denominator of c. Finally, we show that the Flynn–Poonen–Schaefer conjecture holds for $\varphi _c$ if $s \le 2$ , i.e., if the denominator of c has at most two distinct prime factors.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:Zhao (2003a) first established a congruence for any odd prime p>3, S(1,1,1;p)≡−2Bp−3 (mod p), which holds when p=3 evidently. In this paper, we consider finite triple harmonic sum S(α,β,γ,p) (mod p) is considered for all positive integers α,β,γ. We refer to w=α+β+γ as the weight of the sum, and show that if w is even, S(α,β,γ,p)≡0 (mod p) for p≥w+3; if w is odd S(α,γ,γ,p)≡rBp−w (mod p) for p≥w, here r is an explicit rational number independent of p. A congruence of Catalan number is obtained as a special case.

Abstract:Let $ \mathbb{F}_q $ be the finite field of $ q $ elements, and $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ its extension of degree $ n $. A normal basis of $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ over $ \mathbb{F}_q $ is a basis of the form $ \{\alpha, \alpha^{q}, \cdots, \alpha^{q^{n-1}}\} $. Some problems on normal bases can be finally reduced to the determination of the irreducible factors of the polynomial $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $, while the latter is closely related to the cyclotomic polynomials. Denote by $ \mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1) $ the set of all distinct monic irreducible factors of $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $. The criteria for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)|\leq 2 $\end{document} have been studied in the literature. In this paper, we provide the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = s, $\end{document} where $ s $ is a positive integer by using the properties of cyclotomic polynomials and results from the Diophantine equations. As an application, we obtain the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = 3, 4, 5. $\end{document}

Abstract:In this paper, explicit determination of the cyclotomic numbers of order l and 2 l , for odd prime l ≡ 3 (mod 4), over finite field 𝔽_q in the index 2 case are obtained, utilizing the explicit formulas on the corresponding Gauss sums. The main results in this paper are related with the number of rational points of certain elliptic curve, called “Legendre curve”, and the properties and value distribution of such number are also presented.

Abstract:Binomial coefficients and central trinomial coefficients play important roles in combinatorics. Let $p>3$ be a prime. We show that $$T_{p-1}\equiv\left(\frac p3\right)3^{p-1}\ \pmod{p^2},$$ where the central trinomial coefficient $T_n$ is the constant term in the expansion of $(1+x+x^{-1})^n$. We also prove three congruences modulo $p^3$ conjectured by Sun, one of which is $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{p-1}k\binom{2k}k((-1)^k-(-3)^{-k})\equiv \left(\frac p3\right)(3^{p-1}-1)\ \pmod{p^3}.$$ In addition, we get some new combinatorial identities.

Abstract:We promote the recent research by Akiyama and Kaneko on the higher-order derivative values $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)$ of the cyclotomic polynomials. This article focuses on Lehmer's explicit formula of $\Phi_n^{(k)}(1)/\Phi_n(1)$ as a polynomial of the Euler and Jordan totient functions over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then we prove Akiyama-Kaneko's conjecture that the polynomials have a specific simple factor.

Opposing Average Congruence Class Biases in the Cyclicity and Koblitz Conjectures for Elliptic Curves

Abstract:The cyclicity and Koblitz conjectures ask about the distribution of primes of cyclic and prime-order reduction, respectively, for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. In 1976, Serre gave a conditional proof of the cyclicity conjecture, but the Koblitz conjecture (refined by Zywina in 2011) remains open. The conjectures are now known unconditionally "on average" due to work of Banks--Shparlinski and Balog--Cojocaru--David. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the cyclicity conjecture for primes in arithmetic progressions (AP), with relevant work by Akbal--Güloğlu and Wong. In this paper, we adapt Zywina's method to formulate the Koblitz conjecture for primes in AP and refine a theorem of Jones to establish results on the moments of the constants in both the cyclicity and Koblitz conjectures for AP. In doing so, we uncover a somewhat counterintuitive phenomenon: On average, these two constants are oppositely biased over congruence classes. Finally, in an accompanying repository, we give Magma code for computing the constants discussed in this paper.

Abstract: We pose many conjectures involving primes and quadratic forms, which might interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Below are five typical examples: (i) For any positive integer, there is an integer k=0,...,n such that n+k and n+k^2 are both prime. (ii) Any integer n>11 can be written as p+q with p, p+6, 6q-1 and 6q+1 all prime. (iii) For each n=6,7,... there is a prime p<n such that 6n-p and 6n+p are both prime. (iv) Any integer n>3 can be written as p+q, where p is a prime with p-1 and p+1 both practical, and q is either prime or practical. Also, every even number n>8 can be written as p+q+r, where p is a prime with p-1 and p+1 both practical, q is a prime with q-1 and q+1 both practical, and r is a practical number with r-1 and r+1 both prime. (v) Any positive rational number can be written as $m/n$, where $m$ and $n$ are positive integers with $p_m+p_n$ a square (or with $\pi(m)\pi(n)$ a positive square, or with $\varphi(m)$ and $\sigma(n)$ both squares).

Abstract:Given a positive integer $n\ge 2$, let $D(n)$ denote the smallest positive integer $m$ such that $a^3+a(1\le a\le n)$ are pairwise distinct modulo $m^2$. A conjecture of Z.-W. Sun states that $D(n)=3^k$, where $3^k$ is the least power of $3$ no less than $\sqrt{n}$. The purpose of this paper is to confirm this conjecture.

Abstract:Let E be an elliptic curve defined over Q with complex multiplication. For a prime p, some formulas for a(p) = p + 1 - #E(F-p) are given in terms of the binomial coefficients. We show that the equality a(p) = r holds for some fixed integer r if and only if a certain quadratic polynomial represents the prime p. In particular, for E : y(2) = x(3) + x, a(p) = 2 holding for an odd prime p if and only if p is of the form n(2) + 1 and for E : y(2) = x(3) - 11x + 14, a(p) = 2 holding for an odd prime p if and only if p is of the form (4n)(2) + 1; a(p) = -2 holding for an odd prime p if and only if p is of the form (4n + 2)(2) + 1. In some CM cases the Lang-Trotter conjecture and the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture are equivalent.

Abstract:The classical modular polynomials $\Phi_\ell(X,Y)$ give plane curve models for the modular curves $X_0(\ell)/\mathbb{Q}$ and have been extensively studied. In this article, we provide closed formulas for $\ell$ nontrivial coefficients of the classical modular polynomials $\Phi_\ell(X,Y)$ in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the modular invariant function $j(z)$ for a prime $\ell$. Our interest in the formulas were motivated by our conjectures on congruences modulo powers of the primes $2,3$ and $5$ satisfied by the coefficients of these polynomials. We deduce congruences from these formulas supporting the conjectures.
