Abstract:Advances in the use of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) have opened up a wide range of applications in the field of nanotechnology. The knowledge of the properties of PMMA has contributed a lot to the recent boosts in the synthesis, modification, and applications of the polymer. However, there is a need to condense these developments in the form of an article for better understanding and easy access. This review highlights the fundamental physical properties of PMMA, coupled with experimental evidence of its essential chemistry, such as solubility, hydrolysis, grafting, combustion reactions, reactions with amines, and thermal decomposition. The recent developments in the applications of PMMA in biomedical, optical, solar, sensors, battery electrolytes, nanotechnology, viscosity, pneumatic actuation, molecular separations, and polymer conductivity were also revealed.

Region-selective Metalization of Poly(methylmethacrylate) Surface Based on UV/ozone Surface Modification

Abstract:Poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) has been widely used in the fields of optical instruments, aviation and auto industry, construction industry, advertising and decoration industry due to its optical transparency, low cost, low toxicity, and less fragile property. Recently it has been exploited to fabricate microfluidic chips. Region-selective metallization of PMMA surfaces are frequently required to improve the surface properties of PMMA and to integrate micro metal devices in PMMA microfluidic chips. This article presents our recent study on region-selective metalization of PMMA by means of UV/O-3-based surface modification in combination of region-selective electroless plating. Deep UV-lights, ozone, and deep UV-lights in cooperation with ozone were compared with respect to the efficiency of hydrophilization of the PMMA surface. It was observed with water contact angle measurements that only synchronized deep UV and ozone treatment can turn the PMMA surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic effectively. Attenuated total reflection fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that polar moieties such as carboxyl groups were generated on the UV/O-3 treated areas. These polar moieties served as the anchors for further chemical reactions including amination of the carboxyl groups with ethylenediamine, adsorption of chloraurate anion onto the amine groups, and reduction of the Au(III) in the chloraurate anion to Au(0) by borohydride. These reactions led to the formation of the catalysis center of gold nano-particles on the UV-irradiated areas, which is indispensable for region-selective electroless plating. After optimization of the experimental conditions, a novel method for preparation of micro metal devices on PMMA surface has been established. With the printed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film serving as the primary photo mask, the achievable resolution of the prepared micro metal patterns was 50 mu m or less. The deposited metal films adhered to the PMMA surface so strongly that they could hardly be tore off with adhesive tapes. Micro gold electrodes, micro gold electric heaters, micro copper electrodes, etc. were demonstrated to be prepared on PMMA surfaces, and their physical and electro-chemical properties were characterized.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is particularly useful for microfluidic chips with the features of low price, excellent optic transparency, attractive mechanical and chemical properties, ease of fabrication and modification, biocompatibility, etc. During the past decade, significant progress in the PMMA microfluidic chips has occurred. This review, which contains 120 references, summarizes the recent advances and the key strategies in the fabrication, modification, and application of PMMA microfluidic chips. It is expected that PMMA microchips should find a wide range of applications and will lead to the creation of truly disposable microfluidic devices.

Abstract:A wide range of polymers are commonly used for various applications in prosthodontics. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is commonly used for prosthetic dental applications, including the fabrication of artificial teeth, denture bases, dentures, obturators, orthodontic retainers, temporary or provisional crowns, and for the repair of dental prostheses. Additional dental applications of PMMA include occlusal splints, printed or milled casts, dies for treatment planning, and the embedding of tooth specimens for research purposes. The unique properties of PMMA, such as its low density, aesthetics, cost-effectiveness, ease of manipulation, and tailorable physical and mechanical properties, make it a suitable and popular biomaterial for these dental applications. To further improve the properties (thermal properties, water sorption, solubility, impact strength, flexural strength) of PMMA, several chemical modifications and mechanical reinforcement techniques using various types of fibers, nanoparticles, and nanotubes have been reported recently. The present article comprehensively reviews various aspects and properties of PMMA biomaterials, mainly for prosthodontic applications. In addition, recent updates and modifications to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of PMMA are also discussed.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is widely used in orthopedic applications, including bone cement in total joint replacement surgery, bone fillers, and bone substitutes due to its affordability, biocompatibility, and processability. However, the bone regeneration efficiency of PMMA is limited because of its lack of bioactivity, poor osseointegration, and non-degradability. The use of bone cement also has disadvantages such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) release and high exothermic temperature during the polymerization of PMMA, which can cause thermal necrosis. To address these problems, various strategies have been adopted, such as surface modification techniques and the incorporation of various bioactive agents and biopolymers into PMMA. In this review, the physicochemical properties and synthesis methods of PMMA are discussed, with a special focus on the utilization of various PMMA composites in bone tissue engineering. Additionally, the challenges involved in incorporating PMMA into regenerative medicine are discussed with suitable research findings with the intention of providing insightful advice to support its successful clinical applications.

Abstract:Tensile strengths of PMMA specimens with adhesive joints made by four kinds of bonding technologies (conventional bonding, quick bonding, ultraviolet light polymerization bonding and ultraviolet light polymerization bonding with heat treatment) were tested.The Weibull distribution theory was used to evaluate the dispersion of tensile strength data.The results show that Weibull distribution function can well describe strength distributions.Average strength of specimens by quick bonding technology was higher and the dispersion of strengths was lower.The bonding coefficient was obtained to be 0.83.Besides, the bonding process consumed less time.So the quick bonding technology is more suitable for bonding of PMMA structures in large engineering.

Abstract:The alkyl-terminated poly(hexamethyleneguanidine hydrochloride) (PHMG-L), which is antibacterial by physical membrane rupture, was selected as the functional gene, a nonleaching antimicrobial polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was developed by the melting grafting reaction between the random copolymer P (MMA-co-MAH) containing 5.0 wt% maleic anhydride (MAH) and the PHMG-L. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra, energy spectrometer, atomic force microscope, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analyzer, UV–visible spectrophotometer confirmed that P(MMA-g-PHMG) had been successfully prepared, and the grafting efficiency was at 67.1%–70.7% while 1.0–3.0 wt% PHMG-L was added. Furthermore, P(MMA-g-PHMG) was compatible with PMMA, and partially enriched on the surface of the mixture. The inhibition rates of antimicrobial PMMA with 3.0 wt% PHMG-L against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached 99.9%, and the nonleaching characteristic ensured the safety and long-term antimicrobial property. The antimicrobial PMMA also possessed excellent heat resistance and transparency. This study provides a green and promising approach for the industrial fabrication of antimicrobial PMMA.

The effects of nano-silver loaded zirconium phosphate on antibacterial properties, mechanical properties and biosafety of room temperature curing PMMA materials

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) frequently features in dental restorative materials due to its favorable properties. However, its surface exhibits a propensity for bacterial colonization, and the material can fracture under masticatory pressure. This study incorporated commercially available RHA-1F-II nano-silver loaded zirconium phosphate (Ag-ZrP) into room-temperature cured PMMA at varying mass fractions. Various methods were employed to characterize Ag-ZrP. Subsequently, an examination of the effects of Ag-ZrP on the antimicrobial properties, biosafety, and mechanical properties of PMMA materials was conducted. The results indicated that the antibacterial rate against Streptococcus mutans was enhanced at Ag-ZrP additions of 0%wt, 0.5%wt, 1.0%wt, 1.5%wt, 2.0%wt, 2.5%wt, and 3.0%wt, achieving respective rates of 53.53%, 67.08%, 83.23%, 93.38%, 95.85%, and 98.00%. Similarly, the antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli registered at 31.62%, 50.14%, 64.00%, 75.09%, 86.30%, 92.98%. When Ag-ZrP was introduced at amounts ranging from 1.0% to 1.5%, PMMA materials exhibited peak mechanical properties. However, mechanical strength diminished beyond additions of 2.5%wt to 3.0%wt, relative to the 0%wt group, while PMMA demonstrated no notable cytotoxicity below a 3.0%wt dosage. Thus, it is inferred that optimal antimicrobial and mechanical properties of PMMA materials are achieved with nano-Ag-ZrP (RHA-1F-II) additions of 1.5%wt to 2.0%wt, without eliciting cytotoxicity.

Abstract:ABS T R A C T Poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) is a polymer material with increasing applications in buildings as an alter-native to glass. Compared with glass, PMMA is lightweight, has high light transmittance, and has no risk of self-explosion. PMMA can be bonded to form large components without visible connections through bulk polymerization. PMMA used in construction (construction PMMA) is not toughened by the directional stretching process, which makes it different from the directional PMMA used in aerospace. This study aimed to explore the mechanical properties of construction PMMA. First, uniaxial tensile tests of the base coupons (without bonding areas) and bonding coupons (with bonding areas) at different temperatures (-40 to 60 degrees C) were conducted, and uniaxial compressive tests were conducted at the same temperatures. Thereafter, predictive formulae were proposed to describe the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of construction PMMA under tension and compression, and a reduction factor for the ultimate strength of the bonding coupon was proposed. Subsequently, an exponential stress-strain relationship was proposed to describe the mechanical behavior of construction PMMA at different temperatures, which exhibited better accuracy. Finally, the capacity tests of the two PMMA beams were conducted. Finite element models of the test beams were established using the proposed stress-strain relationship. The accuracy of the proposed stress-strain relationship was verified by comparing the results of the finite element analyses and the test.

Abstract:Bone tumors are invasive diseases with a tendency toward recurrence, disability, and high mortality rates due to their grievous complications. As a commercial polymeric biomaterial, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement possesses remarkable mechanical properties, injectability, and plasticity and is, therefore, frequently applied in bone tissue engineering. Numerous positive effects in bone tumor treatment have been demonstrated, including biomechanical stabilization, analgesic effects, and tumor recurrence prevention. However, to our knowledge, a comprehensive evaluation of the application of the PMMA cement in bone tumor treatment has not yet been reported. This review comprehensively evaluates the efficiency and complications of the PMMA cement in bone tumor treatment, for the first time, and introduces advanced modification strategies, providing an objective and reliable reference for the application of the PMMA cement in treating bone tumors. We have also summarized the current research on modifications to enhance the anti-tumor efficacy of the PMMA cement, such as drug carriers and magnetic hyperthermia.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used in implantable medical devices; however, PDMS is not a completely biocompatible material for electronic medical devices in the bladder. To identify novel biocompatible materials for intravesical implanted medical devices, we evaluated the biocompatibility of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) by analyzing changes in the levels of macrophages, macrophage migratory inhibitory factor (MIF), and inflammatory cytokines in the bladder. A ball-shaped metal coated with PMMA or PDMS was implanted into the bladders of rats, and after intravesical implantation, the inflammatory changes induced by the foreign body reaction were evaluated. In the early period after implantation, increased macrophage activity and MIF in the urothelium of the bladder were observed. However, significantly decreased macrophage activity and MIF in the bladder were observed after implantation with PMMA- or PDMS-coated metal in the later period. In addition, significantly decreased inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 β , IL-6, and TNF- α were observed with time. Based on these results, we suggest that MIF plays a role in the foreign body reaction and in the biocompatible packaging with PMMA for the implanted medical devices in the bladder.

Abstract:Recently, thermoplastic polymers have become popular materials for microfluidic chips due to their easy fabrication and low cost. A polymer based microfluidic device can be formed in various fabrication techniques such as laser machining, injection molding, and hot embossing. A new bonding process presented in this paper uses a 2.5% (w/w) polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) solution as an adhesive layer to bond dissimilar polymers-PMMA to polycarbonate (PC)-to enclose the PMMA microfluidic channels with PC. This technique has been successfully demonstrated to bond PMMA microchip to PC film. This paper presents bonding strength using a shear strength test and a crack opening method in addition to the fluidic leakage inspection.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) based bone cement has been clinically used extensively in orthopedics for arthroplasty and kyphoplasty, due to its biocompatibility and excellent primary fixation to the host bone. In this focused review, we discuss the use of various fillers and secondary chemical moieties to improve the bioactivity and the physicochemical properties. The viscosity of the PMMA blend formulations and working time are crucial to achieving intimate contact with the osseous tissue, which is highly sensitive to organic or inorganic fillers. Hydroxyapatite as a reinforcement resulted in compromised mechanical properties of the modified cement. The possible mechanisms of the additive- or filler-dependent strengthening or weakening of the PMMA blend are critically reviewed. The addition of layered double hydroxides with surface functionalization appears to be a promising approach to enhance the bonding of filler with the PMMA matrix. Such an approach consequently improves the mechanical properties, owing to enhanced dispersion as well as contributions from crack bridging. Finally, the use of emerging alternatives, such as nanoparticles, and the use of natural biomolecules were highlighted to improve bioactivity and antibacterial properties.
Fabrication and Characterization of PMMA/MWCNTs Composite Materials

Abstract:In order to improve the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as reinforcement through in situ polymerization method to prepare PMMA/MWCNTs composites by changing the reaction time, polymerization temperature and the content of MWCNTs. The effects of different reaction conditions on the properties of the composites were studied. The results show that the mechanical properties, thermal/electrical conductivity and thermal stability of the composites are improved compared with the PMMA matrix. The tensile strength of the composites is increased by up to 24%. The bending strength of the composite material increases from 20.41 to 68.04 MPa, and the maximum increase is 233%. Meanwhile, when the content of MWCNTs is 3 wt%, the thermal conductivity of the composite is 0.335 W/(m-K), which increases by 138%, and the electrical conductivity is 3.94 S/m. The thermal stability of the composite has been significantly enhanced. The modified PMMA will be widely used in medicine, communications, electronics and other fields.

Abstract:Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the dominant acrylic that is widely used to produce partial and complete dentures. Denture fractures are caused by fatigue owing to repetitive masticatory, flexural and impact loads produced by dropping. The mechanical properties of dentures have been developed by reinforcing with various agents like rubbers, fillers and fibers. Progressively, novel dental materials reinforcement tactics have been developed following the advancement in Nano dentistry. Nonetheless, the issue pertaining to the superior mechanical properties of the PMMA still exists albeit it's biocompatible and aesthetic properties. In recent years, the nanostructure materials have received much attention due to their high surface area to volume ratio that boosts interaction and delivers new biological, physical, and chemical characteristics. Many studies have evaluated the usage of nanotubes and nanofiber in dental composites, however, the data estimating the reinforcement issue of nanotubes and nanofibers in PMMA have been scarce. This article is aimed to review the progress related to the development of mechanical properties of denture base materials in addition to the latest advances and prospective developments for PMMA acrylic resins reinforcement. Embedded 3D printing and pressurized thermo-curing of PMMA for medical implants

Abstract:Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a synthetic polymer commonly used for medical implants in cranioplasty and orthopedic surgery owing to its excellent mechanical properties, optical transparency, and minimal inflammatory responses. Recently, the development of 3D printing opens new avenues in the fabrication of patient-specific PMMA implants for personalized medicine. However, challenges are confronted when adapting medical-grade PMMA to the 3D printing process due to its dynamic viscosity and nonself-supporting characteristics before cured. In addition, the intrinsically exothermic polymerization of MMA brings about bubble generation issues that reduce its mechanical performance harshly. Therefore, in this study, an embedded 3D printing methodology followed by pressurized thermo-curing is proposed and developed: a granular alginate microgel is designed for serving as a supporting matrix when jamming formed between the granules to structurally support the extruded precursor filaments of PMMA-MMA ink during both 3D printing and post-curing; moreover, the autoclave reactor enclosing the alginate matrix and as-sculpted PMMA structures is utilized to generate temperature-dependent pressure, which serves for suppressing the bubbles and solidifying the polymerized MMA during the post-curing process. The 3D printed PMMA is comparably matchable to traditional PMMA castings in terms of their microstructures, density, thermal properties, mechanical performance and biocompatibility. In the future, the proposed embedded 3D printing platform combined with the special post-curing method has great potential for a customized and cost-effective fabrication of patient-specific, complex and functional PMMA implants.

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an important thermoplastic polymer and a versatile lithographic resist. However, the low heat resistance and low dry-etch resistance seriously restricts the application of PMMA in high-end devices and advanced nanolithography. Herein, methyl methacrylate (MMA) was copolymerized with two comonomers 1-adamantyl methacrylate (AdMA) and 1-acryloyloxy-3-hydroxyadamantane (HAdMA), and a series of copolymers P(AdMA-co-MMA) and P(HAdMA-co-MMA) with different contents of HAdMA were prepared. The UV–Vis, ellipsometer, DSC, TG, and TG–MS techniques were employed to investigate the effects of adamantyl and hydroxyadamantyl substituents on the optical and thermal properties of PMMA. The introduced hydroxyadamantyl not only significantly enhanced the refractive index, but also maintained the high transparency and low dispersion of PMMA. The glass transition temperature and thermal stability of PMMA were also greatly improved by the hydroxyadamantyl. The initial decomposition temperature of PMMA increased from 160 to about 260 °C after introducing 5% HAdMA. HAdMA was more effective than AdMA in improving the optical and thermal properties of PMMA. The novel P(HAdMA-co-MMA) copolymer has overcome the shortcomings of traditional PMMA and is anticipated to significantly broaden its range of applications.

Application of solubility parameters in the preparation of PMMA with permanent antistatic, high toughness, and excellent optical properties

Abstract:In this paper, a novel kind of PMMA copolymer, P(MMA-co-MAA-co-SPMA), with permanently antistatic, high toughness, and high transparent properties, was synthesized via radical copolymerization. Herein, we selected the appropriate compatibilizer α-methacrylic acid (MAA) and release agent (lauryldiethanolamine) through the calculation of solubility parameters for industrial mass production. What is more, the polymer's molecular weight was increased by improving the polymer's synthesis process. The structure and properties of the obtained copolymer were characterized. With 0.6 wt% of the 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMA), the copolymer exhibits nearly unchanged transparency with neat PMMA, and its unnotched impact strength reaches 16 kJ/m2. The surface resistance of the copolymer could be reduced to 1010 Ω, which could be considered as antistatic materials. Finally, the antistatic mechanism was analyzed. The main reason is that the hydrophilic group absorbs water to form a conductive layer on the surface, and 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMA) is an ionic monomer that can form ion channels in water molecules, further accelerating the leakage of accumulated electrostatic charges and improving the antistatic properties of the copolymer. The method of selecting compatibilizers and release agents through solubility parameters provides more opportunities for the development of PMMA with excellent comprehensive performance.

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has been widely applied in the semiconductor field due to its excellent specialties of transparency and durability, but impurities in the polymerization process result in electric leakage and are tough to remove even during high-temperature baking. In this study, a near-room-temperature supercritical CO2 fluid (NRT-SCF) treatment method is adopted to purify PMMA and improve its insulating properties. Residual solvent and initiators in PMMA films can be easily taken away by supercritical CO2 fluid at near-room-temperature to enhance the electric characteristics. An Al/PMMA/Mo metal-insulator-metal device is fabricated to investigate the improvement in PMMA quality. The leakage current of the device can be decreased more than 10-fold and its capacitance can also become more stable after NRT-SCF treatment. The current conduction mechanism is transformed from Hopping conduction to Schottky emission. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test results confirmed that defects like butyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide in PMMA films have been reduced a lot based on material analysis. The findings of this study lead to the hopeful prospect that supercritical CO2 fluid technology can greatly promote the insulating properties of PMMA and offer more potential applications for PMMA in wider fields.
