Abstract:Polypyrrole microcontainers with morphology like bowls and balls with diameters of only several micrometers were synthesized through an electrochemical polymerization route. In this process, the liquid organic monomer was dispersed in a neutral aqueous solution as microdroplets by sonication and then the droplets assembled onto the surface of an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrode modified with six bilayers of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS). Polymerization of the outmost layers of the droplets resulted in the formation of well-ordered microcontainers on the working electrode surface in a number density of about 106unitscm−2.

Abstract:Polypyrrole microcontainers with morphology like bowls, cups, and bottles have been electrochemically generated by direct oxidation of pyrrole in the aqueous solution of P-naphthalenesulfonic acid (beta-NSA). The well-ordered microcontainers stand upright on the working electrode surface in a density of 2000-8000 units cm(-2). Their morphological features can be simply controlled by electrochemical polymerization condition, and the results have a good reproducibility. The growth process of microcontainers was studied by scanning electron microscopy. A "soup bubble" growth mechanism was postulated and confirmed by electrolysis of water using a polypyrrole film-coated electrode. The walls of the microcontainers were made of polypyrrole in the oxidized (conductive) state according to the results of Raman and infrared spectroscopies. Electrochemical studies demonstrated that the PPy film with microcontainers had a large surface area which resulted in high film/electrolyte double-layer capacitive charges.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks are a class of crystalline porous polymers formed by linking organic units into periodically aligned skeletons and pores. Here we report a strategy for wiring these frameworks with conducting polymers via wall engineering and polymerization. We anchored each edge site with one pyrrole unit, which is densely packed along the z direction yet protruded from pore walls. This assembly enables the polymerization of pyrrole units to form polypyrrole and creates a new polypyrrole chain conformation. The resultant framework constitutes six single file polypyrrole chains in each pore and develop spatially segregated yet built‐in single molecular wires with exceptional stable polarons. Hall effect measurements revealed that the materials are p‐type semiconductors, increase conductivity by eight orders of magnitude compared to the pristine frameworks, and achieve a carrier mobility as large as 13.2 cm2 V–1 s–1. Our results open an avenue to π electronic frameworks by interlayer molecular wiring with conducting polymers.

Abstract:Bilayer actuators consisting of a layer of aligned PPy microtubules with the length of 15 mu m and a layer of compact PPy film with the thickness of 15 pm have been fabricated. The actuators can bend to an angle much larger than 90 degrees at an actuation rate of similar to 100 degrees s(-1) under a driving potential of 0.8 V versus Ag/AgCl. The microtubule layers of both type actuators are "sticky", and can capture Or trap polystyrene microparticles from their dilute dispersions. Moreover, the captured particles can be extensively released by sonication or partly released by electrochemically reducing the actuators in the aqueous electrolytes. On the basis of extensive investigations including controlling the conditions of electrochemical actuation and the redox states of PPy microtubules, adjusting the particle size and composition, possible mechanisms for capturing and releasing microparticles were proposed.

Abstract:One-dimensional conducting polymer nanostructure arrays could provide short ion transport paths, thus delivering superior chemical/physical performance and having large potential as intelligent switching materials. In this work, in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy is employed to monitor the self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays in template-free electrochemical polymerization. The specific spreading behavior of pyrrole micelles on the conductive substrate is important to large-area self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays and the insight into self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays is discussed. Moreover, compared with unoriented nanostructured polypyrrole, the conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays possess enhanced electrical and electrochemical performances.
Hollow Microstructures of Polypyrrole Doped by Poly(styrene Sulfonic Acid)

Abstract:Microstructures with hollow interiors, such as microspheres, microcrocks, microbowls, and micropumpkins, were prepared through the direct electrochemical oxidation of pyrrole in an aqueous solution of poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA). Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the microstructures possessed hollow interiors. The addition of polymeric doping ions made the skins of the microstructures very smooth, and several novel structures were observed. The morphology of the microstructures was simply modulated through changes in the electrochemical conditions. Raman and Fourier transform infrared characterizations indicated that the microstructures were made of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) doped by polymeric anions of poly(styrene sulfonate), and X-ray diffraction showed that the microstructures were amorphous. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that PPy-PSSA composite films with microstructures had higher thermal stability than pure PPy, PPy-coated PSSA microspheres, and naphthalene sulfonic acid doped PPy microstructures. Furthermore, PPy-PSSA composite films with microstructures showed cation-exchange behavior during the redox process in aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate. Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy) micro- and nanowires were synthesized through electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole in the aqueous solutions of 1-pyrenesulfonic acid (PSA), in which PSA acted as both surfactant and dopant. Macroscopic studies (SEM and TEM) indicated that the PPy wires have diameters of 120–500nm and length of several micrometers. Electrochemical investigation demonstrated that the PPy wires have much stronger electrochemical activity than the conventional flat PPy film because of their higher specific surface area. Furthermore, the PSA doped PPy wires showed strong emission in an aqueous dispersion. A possible micelle guided formation mechanism has been proposed and investigated.
Fabrication Of Polypyrrole Hollow Y-Junction And Capsule Using Azo-Dye Templates

Abstract:Novel polypyrrole (PPy) hollow micrometer-sized Y-junctions and capsules were selectively prepared via in-situ polymerization. The rod junctions or particles of benzyl orange (BO) precipitates were used as reactive templates which were obtained by adding HCl or FeCl3 to BO aqueous solution, respectively. PPy formed on the surface of the templates and the templates could be removed easily by routine washing with water for BO-HCl or by direct self-degradation for BO-FeCl3. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that, the PPy hollow Y-junctions and capsules with morphologies similar to those of templates were obtained after templates removal. The effects of pH, the speed of the oxidant addition and the reaction temperature on morphology of the PPy microstructures were investigated and the special hollow structures could be observed always under the appropriate conditions. It was found that more PPy Y-junctions or capsules were obtained when the polymerization rate was decreased either by controlling the speed of oxidant addition or the reaction temperature, implying that the formation of PPy micro/nanostructures by this BO template method is a relatively slow process. Moreover, the structure and property of the PPy microstructures have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques and electric conductivity measurements.

Abstract:A polypyrrole microbowl with dimensionally confined graphene is fabricated through electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole with a gas bubble template and reduction of graphene oxide in situ. The unique assembly of graphene within the polypyrrole microbowl presents much enhanced sensor performance, which will be attractive as a micro detection system, in which only a few microliter sample solution is needed.

Abstract:Wire-, ribbon-, and sphere-like nanostructures of polypyrrole have been synthesized by solution chemistry methods in the presence of various surfactants (anionic, cationic, or nonionic surfactant) with various oxidizing agents [ammonium persulfate (APS) or ferric chloride (FeCl3), respectively]. The surfactants and oxidizing agents used in this study have played a key role in tailoring the nanostructures of polypyrrole during the polymerization. It is inferred that the lamellar structures of a mesophase are formed by self-assembly between the cations of a long chain cationic surfactant [cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or dodeyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)] and anions of oxidizing agent APS. These layered mesostructures are presumed to act as templates for the formation of wire- and ribbon-like polypyrrole nanostructures. In contrast, if a short chain cationic surfactant octyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) or nonionic surfactant poly(ethylene glycol) mono-p-nonylphenyl ether (O pi-10) is used, sphere-like polypyrrole nanostructures are obtained, whichever of the oxidizing agents mentioned above is used. In this case, micelles resulting, from self-assembly among surfactant molecules are envisaged to serve as the templates while the polymerization happens. It is also noted that, if anionic surfactant sodium dodeyl surfate (SDS) is used, no characteristic nanostructures of polypyrrole were observed. This may be attributed to the doping effect of anionic surfactants into the resulting polypyrrole chains, and as a result, micelles self-assembled among surfactant molecules are broken down during the polymerization. The effects of monomer concentration, surfactant concentration, and surfactant chain length on the morphologies of the resulting polypyrrole have been investigated in detail. The molecular structures, composition, and electrical properties of the nanostructured polypyrrole have also been investigated in this study.

Abstract:Two types of ionic liquid (IL) based surfactants bearing a terminal pyrrole moiety were synthesized, and used as both structure-directing agents and monomers to prepare mesostructured silica with densely packed pyrrole units within channels via a hydrothermal synthesis procedure. A systematic study was carried out to address the influence of the relative concentration of the IL and the type of head group and counter ions on the mesostructure. As a main result, it was found that both the prepared imidazolium- and pyridium-based surfactants displayed a significantly strong tendency towards formation of a highly ordered two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal mesostructure in a broad range of conditions with excellent reproducibility. In situ polymerization of the pyrrole groups closely packed in the central region of the formed silica pore channels led to the desired mesostructured silica with well-distinct aligned polypyrrole (PPy) molecular wires in channels, which are clearly visible under TEM after the removal of silica framework. It is found that, due to the spatial confinement of the silica framework, the encapsulated PPys are elongated and straight, leading to longer conjugation length.
