Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel kind of magneto-optical (MO) isolators based on series-coupled race-track resonators. The perturbation theory is used to calculate the non-reciprocal phase shift (NRPS) induced by the MO effect. The numerical result indicates that the isolation is greatly enhanced by the box-like spectra of series-coupled resonators. Optical isolation ratio for the first, second, and third order devices are 7.8, 21, and 36.2 dB, respectively. (C) 2015 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:Optical isolators, devices that only allow unidirectional light propagation, constitute an essential building block for photonic integrated circuits. For near-infrared communications wavelengths, most current isolator designs rely on the incorporation of magneto-optical (MO) materials to break time-reversal symmetry, such as iron garnets or magnetically substituted semiconductors. MO garnets form the backbone of traditional bulk isolators, but suffer from large lattice and thermal mismatch with common semiconductor substrates, which has significantly impeded their integration into on-chip optical isolators. Materials innovations over the past few years have overcome these barriers and enabled monolithic deposition of MO oxide thin films on silicon using techniques such as pulsed laser deposition and magnetron sputtering. On-chip optical isolator devices with polarization diversity in the telecommunication band have been demonstrated based on these materials. This article reviews the latest technological breakthroughs in MO oxide material growth as well as device design and integration strategies toward practical implementation of on-chip optical isolation.
Enhancing the magneto-optical effects in low-biased gyromagnetic media via photonic doping.

Abstract:Enhancing nonreciprocal light-matter interaction at sub-wavelength scales has attracted enormous attention due to high demand for compact optical isolators. Here, we propose a significant enhancement of the magneto-optical effect in low-biased gyromagnetic media via photonic doping. Magnetic particles immersed in a gyrotropy-near-zero medium act as dopants that largely modify the macroscopic gyromagnetic effects as well as the gyroelectric ones. Around the resonance frequency, the gyromagnetic activity is largely increased and even exceeds unity, thus providing a photonic band in which the wavenumber of one circularly polarized wave becomes purely imaginary. The sign of gyromagnetic activity flips at two chiral modes, and an equivalent switching of the external bias is revealed. A proof-ofconcept low-biased planar isolator is designed with a thickness of only 1/28 wavelength and a degree of isolation achieving as high as 0.94. This methodology is robust against disturbance of the biased magnetic field and can be flexibly extended to other frequencies, thus offering a promising platform to achieve giant optical isolation with infinitesimally intrinsic magneto-optical effects and reduced sizes. Abstract:On-chip optical isolators constitute an essential building block for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here, we experimentally demonstrated a magneto-optical isolator monolithically integrated on silicon featuring 3 dB insertion loss and 40 dB isolation ratio, both of which represent significant improvements over state-of-the-art. The isolator is also fully passive and operates under a simple unidirectional magnetization scheme. Such superior performance is enabled through a three-way combination of a strip-loaded waveguide design, a compositionally optimized chalcogenide glass as the light guiding medium, and low-loss taper structures created via gray-scale lithographic processing. The device represents an important step toward a practical solution for on-chip isolation in PICs.

Abstract:We designed a simple on-chip integrated optical isolator made up of a metal-insulator-metal waveguide and a disc cavity filled with magneto-optical material to enhance the transverse magneto-optical effect through the coin paradox spin-orbit interaction (SOI). The simulation results of the non-reciprocal transmission properties of this optical structure show that a high-performance on-chip integrated optical isolator is obtained. The maximum isolation ratio is greater than 60 dB with a corresponding insertion loss of about 2 dB. The great performance of the optical isolator is attributed to the strong transverse magneto-optical effect, which is enhanced by the coin paradox SOI. Moreover, the enhancement of the transverse magneto-optical effect through the coin paradox SOI is more substantial for smaller azimuthal mode number n. Benefiting from this, the transverse magneto-optical effect remains strong in a wide wavelength range. Additionally, a smaller cavity has a stronger transverse magneto-optical effect in the same wavelength range. Our research provides a new perspective for creating highly integrated magneto-optical devices.

Abstract:On-chip optical isolators constitute an essential building block for photonic integrated circuits. Monolithic magneto-optical isolators on silicon, while featuring unique benefits such as scalable integration and processing, fully passive operation, large dynamic range, and simple device architecture, had been limited by their far inferior performances compared to their bulk counterparts. Here we discuss our recent work combining garnet material development and isolator device design innovation, which leads to a monolithic optical isolator with an unprecedented low insertion loss of 3 dB and an isolation ratio up to 40 dB. To further overcome the bandwidth and polarization limitations, we demonstrated broadband optical isolators capable of operating for both TM and TE modes. These results open up exciting opportunities for scalable integration of nonreciprocal optical devices with chip-scale photonic circuits.

Abstract:This paper presents an optical waveguide isolator based on two-mode interference (TMI) couplers, by utilizing the magneto-optical nonreciprocal phase shift (NPS). The operating principle of this device is to utilize the difference between the nonreciprocal phase shifts of the two lowest-order modes. A two-dimensional (2D) semi-vectorial finite difference method is used to calculate the difference between the nonreciprocal phase shifts of the two lowest-order modes and optimize the parameters. The proposed device may play an important role in integrated optical devices and optical communication systems.

Abstract:Integrated optical isolators have been a longstanding challenge for photonic integrated circuits (PIC). An ideal integrated optical isolator for PIC should be made by a monolithic process, have a small footprint, exhibit broadband and polarization-diverse operation, and be compatible with multiple materials platforms. Despite significant progress, the optical isolators reported so far do not meet all these requirements. In this article we present monolithically integrated broadband magneto-optical isolators on silicon and silicon nitride (SiN) platforms operating for both TE and TM modes with record high performances, fulfilling all the essential characteristics for PIC applications. In particular, we demonstrate fully-TE broadband isolators by depositing high quality magneto-optical garnet thin films on the sidewalls of Si and SiN waveguides, a critical result for applications in TE-polarized on-chip lasers and amplifiers. This work demonstrates monolithic integration of high performance optical isolators on chip for polarization-diverse silicon photonic systems, enabling new pathways to impart nonreciprocal photonic functionality to a variety of integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:The integrated optical isolator is an essential building block in photonic integrated chips. However, the performance of on-chip isolators based on the magneto-optic (MO) effect has been limited due to the magnetization requirement of permanent magnets or metal microstrips on MO materials. Here, an MZI optical isolator built on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) without any external magnetic field is proposed. A multi-loop graphene microstrip operating as an integrated electromagnet above the waveguide, instead of the traditional metal microstrip, generates the saturated magnetic fields required for the nonreciprocal effect. Subsequently, the optical transmission can be tuned by varying the intensity of currents applied on the graphene microstrip. Compared with gold microstrip, the power consumption is reduced by 70.8%, and temperature fluctuation is reduced by 69.5% while preserving the isolation ratio of 29.44 dB and the insertion loss of 2.99 dB at1550 nm.

Abstract:A simple design approach was presented to avoid the polarization dependence of magneto-optical(MO) waveguide by analyzing the nonreciprocal phase shift in order to widely spread the application of optical isolators,circulators and other nonreciprocal devices into the integrated photonic circuit.A higher refractive index region at one side of the MO core waveguide was involved laterally to break the symmetry of the field distribution.Then the polarization independence of nonreciprocal waveguide was realized.The analysis combined perturbation method and finite difference method shows that the relative derivation between TE and TM mode is lower than 1% while the width of the square single-mode waveguide is larger than 0.7 μm.The advantages in size,fabrication tolerance and design flexibility of the structure may facilitate the nonreciprocal optical device.

Abstract:SOI (silicon-on-insulator) is a new material with a lot of important perform- ances such as large index difference, low transmission loss. Fabrication processes for SOI based optoelectronic devices are compatible with conventional IC processes. Having the potential of OEIC monolithic integration, SOI based optoelectronic devices have shown many good characteristics and become more and more attractive recently. In this paper, the recent progresses of SOI waveguide devices in our research group are presented. By highly effective numerical simulation, the single mode conditions for SOI rib waveguides with rectangular and trapezoidal cross-section were accurately investigated. Using both chemical anisotropic wet etching and plasma dry etching techniques, SOI single mode rib waveguide, MMI coupler, VOA (variable optical attenuator), 2×2 thermal-optical switch were successfully designed and fabricated. Based on these, 4×4 and 8×8 SOI optical waveguide integrated switch matrixes are demonstrated for the first time.

Abstract:Non-reciprocal photonic devices, including optical isolators and circulators, are indispensible components in optical communication systems. However, the integration of such devices on semiconductor platforms has been challenging because of material incompatibilities between semiconductors and magneto-optical materials that necessitate wafer bonding, and because of the large footprint of isolator designs. Here, we report the first monolithically integrated magneto-optical isolator on silicon. Using a non-reciprocal optical resonator on an silicon-on-insulator substrate, we demonstrate unidirectional optical transmission with an isolation ratio up to 19.5 dB near the 1,550 nm telecommunication wavelength in a homogeneous external magnetic field. Our device has a small footprint that is 290 µm in length, significantly smaller than a conventional integrated optical isolator on a single crystal garnet substrate. This monolithically integrated non-reciprocal optical resonator may serve as a fundamental building block in a variety of ultracompact silicon photonic devices including optical isolators and circulators, enabling future low-cost, large-scale integration.

Abstract:Non-reciprocal photonic devices are essential components of classical optical information processing. It is interesting and important to investigate their feasibility in the quantum world. In this work, the quantum properties of an on-chip silicon nitride (SiN)-based magneto-optical (MO) isolator were studied using a single-photon non-reciprocal dynamical transmission experiment. The measured isolation ratio for single photons achieved was 12.33 dB, which proved the functionality of our on-chip isolator. The quantum coherence of the passing single photons was further verified using high-visibility quantum interference. Our work will promote on-chip isolators within the integrated quantum circuits and help introduce novel phenomena in quantum information processes.

The research developments in the State Key Laboratory on Integrated Optoelectronics (China) are also presented.

Abstract:Broadband optical isolators and circulators are highly desirable for wavelength -division multiplexing, light detection, and ranging systems. However, the silicon -integrated optical isolators and circulators reported so far have a limited isolation bandwidth of only several nanometers, due to waveguide and material dispersion. In this paper, we report the development of broadband magneto -optical isolators on silicon nitride waveguides. We proposed a general method of dispersion compensation to achieve a constant phase difference between reciprocal and nonreciprocal phase shifts in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer over a wide frequency range. This method enabled a theoretical 30 dB isolation/circulation bandwidth of more than 240 nm, which covers the S, C, L, and U bands. The fabricated devices showed a maximum isolation ratio of 28 dB, crosstalk of - 28 dB, high 20 -dB isolation bandwidth of 29 nm (3.48 THz), and a relatively low loss of 2.7 dB in the wavelength range of 1520-1610 nm. By further heating the reciprocal phase shifter based on the thermo-optic effect, the experimental 20 dB isolation bandwidth of the device increased to 90 nm (11.03 THz). This method has also been applied to the design of broadband, low -loss isolators, and O/C dual -band isolators/circulators. Our work experimentally demonstrated broadband -integrated optical isolators and circulators on silicon, paving the way for their use in optical communication, data communication, and LiDAR applications. Abstract:We report monolithically integrated magneto-optical isolators, circulators on SiN with 30 dB isolation ratio, -28 dB cross-talk, 54 nm 20 dB isolation bandwidth, and 2.7 dB insertion loss. Compact magneto-optical phase shifter arrays with VπL=0.3 V·cm were also developed, allowing the development of MHz speed optical phased arrays on SiN.
