Anxiety,depression and its related factors in the spouse of stroke patients

Abstract:Objective:The stroke event's occurrence will have the serious pressure to the stroke patients and their spouses.This paper aims to investigate anxiety,depression and its related factors of stroke patients' spouses,identificate determinants of the spouse's anxiety and depression which will help to target caregiver interventions.Methods:Data on patients and their spouses were collected prospectively in 140 stroke survivors.Questionnaires were performed in 140 spouses using self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),self-rating depression scale(SDS),and social support rating scale(SSRS).Results:The mean score in SAS and SDS of the spouses were 38.3±10.9 and 41.1±10.9 respectively,which were higher than domestic norm(P<0.01).There were 40.7% anxiety symptoms and 44.3% depression symptoms,which were higher than normal. The multiple regression analysis showed that,SDS in the spouses were related with the modified Rankin Scale(mRS),the spouse's age,score of self-sensation pressure of the spouse;SAS in the spouses were related with the modified Rankin Scale(mRS),employment,external support and,score of self-sensation pressure of the spouse;The exteral support and employment were negatively correlated to the level of anxiety.Conclusion:Anxiety and depression symptom are popular in the spouses of patients with stroke,the affected factors of the spouse's depression mainly included that higher score of modified Rankin Scale of the patients,older age,and higher score of self-sensation pressure.The affected factors of the spouse's anxiety mainly included that higher score of modified Rankin Scale of the patients,unemployment,higher score of self-sensation pressure and lower external support level.
