Depression, Anxiety and Their Related Factors in the Spouses of Dementia Patients

Abstract:Objective Depression and anxiety are prevalent in the spouses of dementia patients.This study was to investigate the presence and influencing factors of depression and anxiety in the spouses of dementia patients and help the caregivers to handle emotional disorders of the patients.Methods We collected the data of 90 dementia patients and their spouses as caregivers,and conducted questionnaire investigations among 90 spouses of the patients using self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),self-rating depression scale(SDS) and social support rating scale(SSRS).Results The spouses of the patients scored 42.5 ± 10.92 and 38.6 ± 11.4 on SDS and SAS respectively,and 52.2% of them presented depression symptoms and 42.2% anxiety symptoms,all significantly higher than the normal Chinese(P 0.05).The multiple regression analysis showed that the SDS score of the spouses was correlated positively with the clinical dementia rating(CDR) score of the patients and self-sensation pressure of the spouses,and negatively with the utilization of social support.The SAS score of the spouses was correlated positively with their self-sensation pressure and negatively with external support.Conclusion Depression and anxiety symptoms are popular in the spouses of dementia patients.The depression symptoms of the spouses are mainly attributed to their high self-sensation pressure and insufficient utilization of social support,and the anxiety symptoms chiefly to their high self-sensation pressure and inadequate external support.
