Abstract:To review the long procedure of China's informationization efforts and take a sample of its status quo, CEO & CIO China, in perfect cooperation with the Research Team of CIO Leadership Power, Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, carries out a year-long survey of large scale. Through case study, the research aims at investigating roles of informationization playing in 9 major industries of China, including consumer good manufacture, electronics & telecommunications equipment manufacture, heavy-machinery manufacture, financing & banking, retailing & circulating, logistics, and aviation, healthcare, government and telecommunications, thus getting better understanding of the evolutional phases and application levels of informationization in China. We find in the survey that working focus of information system building and road of its development varies between industries. Roles played by informationization are different too. In those highly dynamic and information-intensive industries with fierce competition and well-developed market economy, informationization is of better use. Informationization platform of leading enterprises stimulates other corresponding ones within the same industrial chain to follow suit. As a world manufacture center, China has a higher level of informationization application in manufacture industries, which tallies with its status. On the contrary, for service industries, they are facing tremendous pressure from their oversea counterparts, particularly in financing & banking, telecommunications, and aviation which used to be relative industrial monopoly. They need some in-house driving force for informationization to achieve transition and speed up development For those industries that are closely linked with people's daily life, such as retailing, hospitals and government agencies, they also place informationization on the agenda. Therefore, it is very important to study development levels, differences and roles of informationization in various industries, so as to understand limits and trends of informationization in industries and work out strategies and policies for informationization development in organizational levels.
