Abstract:The copolymer emulsion of polyurethane-acrylate-vinyltriethoxysilane(KH570) was prepared with sodium laurylsulfate and OP-10 as emulsifiers by pre-emulsion process.The structure of copolymer and latex particle morphology were characterized by IR and TEM.The influence of amount of KH-570,temperature and pH value on copolymerization rate was discussed.The results showed that the copolymer contains siloxane groups and the latex particles ranged from 50～100 nm.The conversion rate decrease with increase of the quantity of KH-570 and decrease of the temperature.Incorporation of KH-570 can improve the water resistance of the coatings film significantly.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent researches and developments on surfactants in latex paints.Special attention is put on the use of emulsifiers in latex polymerization and latex paints. The important roles of emulsifiers in polymer latex and latex paint system and the competitive adsorption between surfactants in paint formulations are discussed. The advantage of polymerizable surfactants as emulsifier is points out and development and application of polymerizable surfactants are introduced.

Synthesis and properties of alkoxysilane-modified acrylic latex via miniemulsion polymerization

Abstract:A series of stable alkoxysilane-modified acrylate latexes with various alkoxysilane fractions were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. A small fraction of alkoxysilane side groups were incorporated into acrylic main chains via copolymerization. The hydroxyl oligomer alkoxysilane was grafted to the main chains via the condensation reaction of the hydroxyl groups with hydrolyzed alkxoysilane groups. It was found that: (1) γ-methacryl oxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPMS) was a better alkoxysilane comonomer than vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) in terms of colloid stability during polymerization and the hydrophobic property of the resulted polymer coating; (2) when MPMS was used, the colloid stability was very good either during polymerization or in storage; (3) the oligomer alkoxysilane was grafting onto with a grafted degree around 50%; (4) the oligomer alkoxysilane dramatically increased the hydrophobic property of the resulted coating. The water contact angle increased from 75° to 95° with 10% (mass) oligomer alkoxysilane and further up to 105° with 20% (mass) oiligomer alkoxysilane.

Abstract:Polymer latexes have been widely used in paints, adhesives, binders, paper coatings, textile finishes, pharmaceuticals, floor polishes, printing inks, etc. because of the reduced volatile organic compound emissions afforded by these water-based systems. Rosin has excellent properties of corrosion, moisture, insulation, emulsifying and thickening. The rosin is introduced into polymer latexes to produce polymer latex modified with rosin via blending or copolymerization methods, which not only broadens the use of deep-processing of rosin, but also widens the scope of application of polymer latexes. The research progress of polymer latexes including water dispersible polymers modified with rosin was reviewed. The tendency of polymer latexes modified with rosin is brought forward.

The methods of producing this kind of pressure-sensitive adhesive and their advantages and disadvantages in recent years are summarized. The advantages of adding silicone monomer, adhesive resin, active emulsifier or core-shell polymerization are discussed. At last, the emphasis and prospect of emulsion acrylate pressure-sensitive adhesive in the future are prospected.

Abstract:Two kinds of polyacrylate emulsions modified with fluorine-containing emulsion were prepared by the emulsion mixing method (I) and in-situ emulsion polymerization (II) to improve polyacrylate emulsion properties. The analysis investigates the effects of initiator feeding methods, the kinds of emulsifier and the amount of fluorine-containing emulsion on the stability of the reaction system, monomer conversation and the glass transition temperature of the emulsion films. The water absorption and the hardness of two emulsion films were measured. The results indicate that (1) there is an obvious improvement on the hardness and water absorption of the film based on the mixed emulsion only at high fluorine content in the fluorine-containing emulsion, and (2) the improvement was quite high even for low fluorine content in the fluorine-containing emulsion using method II.

Abstract:In this study, three different kinds of waterborne polyacrylate emulsions were synthesized with different hard, soft, and hydroxyl‐containing functional monomers by semi‐continuous seed emulsion polymerization. Moreover, the synthesized acrylic emulsions were used as binders for water‐based inks and the best recipe was selected out. Our work will provide an idea of acrylic emulsions for water‐based inks binders. The urge to protect the deteriorating ecosystem is compelling us to develop environmental‐friendly materials. In this paper, three different kinds of waterborne polyacrylate emulsions were synthesized with different hard, soft and hydroxyl‐containing functional monomers by semi‐continuous seed emulsion polymerization. Moreover, the influences of different monomers on the performances such as viscosity, adhesion, surface tension, particle size, stability, and contact angle were also investigated. Attractively, conclusions were deduced that with the growth of the monomer's alkyl chain length, the viscosity gradually increases and the surface tension gradually decreases. On the other hand, different functional monomers also have effect on the properties of the synthesized acrylic emulsions. Then the synthesized water‐based acrylic emulsions were used as binders for water‐based inks, the adhesion as well as initial dryness were tested and the recipe for water‐based ink with better performances was selected out. Our work maybe ignites a spark for the designation of acrylic emulsions for water‐based inks binders.

Abstract:The progress of study on synthesizing SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion was reviewed.The major topic concerns some kinds of SiO2 materials and the synthetic mechanisms and methods of SiO2/Polymer nanocomposite emulsion.SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion can be prepared through electrostatic interactions,adsorption intermedium,grafting and coupling mechanism.Blending,sol-gel,emulsion polymerization and dispersion polymerization are the common ways to prepare this nanocomposite emulsion.Futher more,the study emphases,developable directions and applications of the SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion in the fields of paints,adhesive and plastic modifying were summarized.
Preparation of Polyacrylate Emulsion with High Adhesion Properties by Adding Modified Silica Sol

Abstract:Polyacrylate emulsions can be used as adhesives. However, low water resistance and insufficient adhesion have restricted their application. In this study, polyacrylate/silica composite adhesives were prepared by emulsifier-free polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results confirm that modified silica is successfully introduced into the emulsion. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimeter indicate that with the increase of modified silica sol content, the thermal stability of the composite film is improved. When modified silica sol content increases from 0 to 8 wt %, the water contact angle increases from 74° to 98°, and the water sorption rate decreases from 16.5 to 7.8%. Moreover, with the addition of modified silica sol, the peel strength and tack of the modified latex changed slightly. Still, the shear strength on paper materials ranges from 148 min to over 1000 min when the content of modified silica sol reaches 8 wt %. The results show that adding modified silica sol can enhance the adsorption interaction between adhesive and paper material, effectively improving latex adhesive properties.

Hydrophobicity of Polyacrylate Emulsion Film Enhanced by Introduction of Nano-SiO₂ and Fluorine

Abstract:This study proposes to utilize modified Nano-SiO₂/fluorinated polyacrylate emulsion that was synthesized with a semi-continuous starved seed emulsion polymerization to improve the hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and UV-Vis absorption of polyacrylate emulsion film. To verify the proposed method, a series inspection had been conducted to investigate the features of the emulsion film. The morphological analysis indicated that Nano-SiO₂ was surrounded by a silane molecule after modification, which can efficiently prevent silica nanoparticles from aggregating. Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that modified SiO₂ and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) were successfully introduced to the copolymer latex. The particle size of latex increased with the introduction of modified Nano-SiO₂ and DFMA. UV-Vis absorption spectra revealed that modified silicon nanoparticles can improve the ultraviolet shielding effect obviously. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy illustrated that the film⁻air interface was richer in fluorine than film section and the glass side. The contact angle of modified Nano-SiO₂/fluorinated polyacrylate emulsion containing 3 wt % DFMA was 112°, slightly lower than double that of polyacrylate emulsion, indicating composite emulsion films possess better hydrophobicity. These results suggest that introducing modified Nano-SiO₂ and fluorine into polyacrylate emulsion can significantly enhance the thermal stability of emulsion films.

Abstract:Fluorine-containing acrylate has the characteristics of good film forming and loose network structure, and exhibits the characteristics of low surface energy, water and oil repellency, rust resistance, high thermal and oxygenation resistance. The research progress in fluorine-containing acrylate polymer and the structures of its water and oil repellency were introduced in detail. The numbers of carbon in fluorine-containing acrylate polymer and its influence to the capability were also summed. And we give a brief sum-up to its common methods of characterization and applications.
