Abstract:Novel oligomeric intumescent flame retardants, poly(amino phosphonate ester)s (PAPEs), containing both phosphorous and nitrogen, were synthesized by reacting diethyl phosphite with two different polyschiff bases obtained from the reaction of diamines with dialdehyde. The target PAPEs (designated as PAPE-d and PAPE-e, respectively) were characterized by 1H NMR, 31P NMR, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Thermal stability and flammability of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/PAPE blends with various PAPE content were investigated by TGA, limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94) and microscale combustion colorimeter (MCC). The results indicate that PAPEs effectively improve the flame retardancy of EVA. The EVA/30%PAPE-e blend has a LOI value of 28, and its peak heat release rate (PHRR) value in MCC measurement is reduced by 36%. At the same time, the EVA/PAPE blends also have high yield of residual char, indicating that PAPEs are effective charring agents. Scanning electron microscopy observations of the residues of the EVA/PAPE blends show the existence of compact char layer on the surface of the residues, which is responsible for the improvement of the flame retardancy of EVA. Abstract:The copolymer emulsion of polyurethane-acrylate-vinyltriethoxysilane(KH570) was prepared with sodium laurylsulfate and OP-10 as emulsifiers by pre-emulsion process.The structure of copolymer and latex particle morphology were characterized by IR and TEM.The influence of amount of KH-570,temperature and pH value on copolymerization rate was discussed.The results showed that the copolymer contains siloxane groups and the latex particles ranged from 50～100 nm.The conversion rate decrease with increase of the quantity of KH-570 and decrease of the temperature.Incorporation of KH-570 can improve the water resistance of the coatings film significantly.

The important roles of emulsifiers in polymer latex and latex paint system and the competitive adsorption between surfactants in paint formulations are discussed. The advantage of polymerizable surfactants as emulsifier is points out and development and application of polymerizable surfactants are introduced.

Abstract:Periodic copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol (EVA) were synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of a series of structurally symmetric α,ω-diene monomers that containing two vinyl acetate (VAc) units, followed by exhaustive hydrogenation and subsequent hydrolysis. This synthetic methodology provided a new type of EVA copolymer with defined sequence and ever highest VA content via ADMET. These polymer samples were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), NMR, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-fight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF-MS). Thermal properties of EVAc and EVA copolymers were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). EVAc copolymers exhibited two-stage decompositions on TGA traces and displayed a glass transition on DSC thermograms. Meanwhile, the EVA copolymers showed glass transition stages and sharp melting peaks on DSC thermograms, with the Tm values being comparable to that of high density polyethylene (HDPE).

Abstract:In this paper, the urea-formaldehyde(UF) resin was modified with ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer(EVA), and the modified resin was mixed with stone powder to prepare the composite materials. The results showed that with increasing the EVA amount in UF resin, there were no significant changes of pH value and viscosity, but the free formaldehyde content was proportional to the amount of EVA. After adding EVA, the bonding strength of the composite material did not obviously increase, the highest values of the bonding and impact strength were 3.71 MPa only and 1.54 KJ/m , respectively; the hardness of composite material was somewhat increased, but the change was small. So what, the addition of EVA emulsion increased to a certain extent the toughness and strength of the composite material, but the margin was small. The modification effect of composite material with EVA was not remarkable as with PVF.

Abstract:A new type of graft copolymer EVA-g-PU was prepared;the grafting of polyether- polyurethane prepolymer onto EVA backbone was confirmed by FTIR and ~(13)C-NMR characterization. Mechanical testing showed that the tensile strength and elongation at break of EVA-g-PU was far supe- rior to neat EVA.Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA) showed that the storage modulus of EVA-g-PU increased with increasing PU prepolymer content.Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) testing showed that the introduction of PU prepolymer also increased the thermal stabilities of EVA-g- PU copolvmers.

Abstract:Polyethylene wax micro-emulsion was prepared from polyethylene wax 6 100 by high temperature and high-pressure method in hermetic conditions.Influences of HLB number and dosage of emulsifier,emulsification time,temperature,pH,stirring speed and cooling conditions on the properties of polyethylene wax emulsion were investigated.Furthermore,the morphology,particle size and distribution of the emulsion were analyzed by field emission-transmission electron microscope(FE-TEM) and laser dynamic light emission device(DLS).The results showed that the optimum emulsification condition was: HLB number was 14.8,the dosage of compound emulsifier was 6.4%,and the wax was emulsified at 130 ℃ for 40 min with 60 r/min of stirring speed under pH 8.The polyethylene wax ultrafine micro-emulsion with more than 40% of solid content,50 nm of average particle size,good stability and dispersibility could be obtained under the optimum condition.The softness and fullness of the fabric treated with this kind of ultrafine micro-emulsion was obviously improved.Frictional resistance of the fabric surface could be reduced,and the tailoring properties of the fabric could also be greatly improved.

Abstract:Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), a crucial elastomeric resin, finds extensive application in the footwear industry. Conventional chemical foaming agents, including azodicarbonamide and 4,4'-oxybis(benzenesulfonyl hydrazide), have been identified as environmentally problematic. Hence, this study explores the potential of physical foaming of EVA using supercritical nitrogen as a sustainable alternative, garnering considerable interest in both academia and industry. The EVA formulations and processing parameters were optimized and EVA foams with densities between 0.15 and 0.25 g/cm3 were produced. Key findings demonstrate that physical foaming not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances product quality by a uniform cell structure with small cell size (50-100 μm), a wide foaming temperature window (120-180 °C), and lower energy consumption. The research further elucidates the mechanisms of cell nucleation and growth within the crosslinked EVA network, highlighting the critical role of blowing agent dispersion and localized crosslinking around nucleated cells in defining the foam's cellular morphology. These findings offer valuable insights for producing EVA foams with a more controllable cellular structure, utilizing physical foaming techniques.

Abstract:Via melting graft reaction, a new type of graft copolymer EVA-g-PU was synthesized. The characterization of Fourier transform infrared and 13C -nuclear magnetic resonance indicated that the polyether-polyurethane prepolymer was grafted on the EVA main chain successfully. Differential scanning calorimetry testing showed that the melting temperature increased with the increase of PU prepolymer content. The enhanced storage modulus of EVA-g-PU was characterized by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The enhanced degree in the storage modulus of EVA-g-PU increased with the increase of PU prepolymer content. Thermal gravimetric analysis testing showed that thermal stabilities of EVA-g-PU increased with the increase of PU prepolymer content.

Abstract:It is necessary to modify polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) before using it as separation membrane because of its excessive swelling. In this paper,modification methods of PVA are reviewed,including crosslinking, grafting,blending,hybridization and substitution;their advantages and disadvantages are listed;and some comments are given for problems in modification methods. The application of modified PVA membrane is presented in detail. The development and application of PVA pervaporation membrane with excellent hydrophilicity and PVA membrane with high conductivity and low methanol permeability for fuel cell are prospected,respectively.
Surface modification through gradient morphology control of polymer blends

Abstract:Ethylene-vinyl acetate(EVAc) copolymer was melt-grafted with hydroxy ethylmethacrylate(HEEA) and acrylamide (AAm), then blended with polypropylene(PP) in this study. It was found that both PP/EVAc-g-HEMA and PP/EVAc-g-AAm formed a gradient phase structure during annealing, as same as that of a PP/EVAc blend. The formation of the gradient phase structure resulted in accumulation of the dispersed phase on the sample surface. With the dispersed phase EVAc as a carrier, the grafted polar groups were transported onto the surface of the blend sample while forming an EVAc gradient dispersed phase. Due to the hydrogen bonding between the polyurethane (PU) paints and the polar groups grafted on to the EVAc, the coating adhesion was greatly improved and the peeling strength of the coating reached a high value of 800 g/cm without further treatment of the sample surface. Thus, the gradient phase structure control of blends is an effective way of material surface-modification of materials.
Fabrication of Novel Polymer Composites from Leather Waste Fibers and Recycled Poly(Ethylene-vinyl-acetate) for Value-Added Products

Abstract:This investigation was focused on evaluating the utilization of Leather-waste, i.e., "Leather Shavings", to develop "Poly(ethylene-vinyl-acetate)" (EVA) based "polymer matrix composites". Composites with the highest ratio of 1:1 were developed using a rolling-mill, which was then subjected to hot-press molding for value-added applications, notably in the "floor-covering", "structural", "footwear", and "transportation domain". The specimens were examined for evaluating the "physico-mechanical characteristics" such as, "Compressive and Tensile, strength, Abrasion-resistance, Density, tear-resistance, hardness, adhesion-strength, compression, and resilience, damping, and water absorption" as per standard advanced testing techniques. Raising the leather-fiber fraction in the composites culminated in considerable enhancement in "physico-mechanical characteristics" including "modulus", and a decline in "tensile-strain" at "fracture-breakage". The thermo-analytic methods, viz. TGA and DSC studies have evidenced that substantial enhancement of thermo-stability (up to 211.1–213.81 °C) has been observed in the newly developed PMCs. Additionally, the DSC study showed that solid leather fibers lose water at an endothermic transition temperature of around 100 °C, are thermo-stable at around 211 degrees centigrade, and begin to degrade at 332.56-degree centigrade for neat recycled EVA samples and begin to degrade collagen at 318.47-degree centigrade for "leather shavings/recycled EVA polymer composite samples", respectively. Additionally, the "glass transition temperature" (Tg) of the manufactured composites was determined to be between −16 and 30 °C. Furthermore, SEM and EDAX analysis have been used to investigate the morphological characteristics of the developed composites. Micrograph outcomes have confirmed the excellent "uniformity, compatibility, stability and better-bonding" of leather-fibers within the base matrix. Additionally, the "Attenuated-total-reflection" (ATR-FTIR) was carried out to test the "physicochemical chemical-bonding", "molecular-structure", and "functional-groups" of the "base matrix", and its "composites" further affirm the "recycled EVA matrix" contained additives remain within the polymeric-matrix. An "X-ray diffraction study" was also conducted to identify the "chemical-constituents" or "phases" involved throughout the "crystal-structures" of the base matrix and PMCs. Additionally, AFM analysis has also been utilized to explore the "interfacial adhesion properties" of mechanically tested specimens of fabricated polymeric composite surfaces, their "surface topography mapping", and "phase-imaging analysis" of polymer composites that have leather-shavings fibers.

Abstract:As one of polymer modified asphalts (PMAs), epoxy asphalt (EA) has been extensively used in the pavement of steel bridge deck due to its excellent performances. Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) is one of most used polymer modifiers in PMAs. EA/EVA blends were prepared with the addition of EVA in asphalts. The effects of EVA on the morphology evolution of EA were investigated by laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the rotational viscosity, thermal stability and mechanical properties of EA/EVA blends were studied. LSCM observed that epoxy resin was the continuous phase and EVA-asphalt was the disperse phase in EA/EVA blends. The presence of epoxy crosslinking network destroyed the physical interaction between EVA and asphalts. Both LSCM and SEM observations found that smaller and well-distributed EVA-asphalt particles formed in EA/EVA blends with lower EVA loadings. However, EVA-asphalt particles distributed inhomogeneously in the blends with higher EVA loadings. The addition of EVA increased the viscosity of the neat EA. Moreover, the presence of EVA improved both thermal stability and mechanical properties of the neat EA.
