Abstract:Professor Yu Wu-jin's new book Practice and Freedom and his study on philosophy of practice show the fundamental thesis of philosophy of practice:love of wisdom and love of freedom.Since the Cultural Revolution,the understanding of practice in Chinese academia has experienced four phases led by four prominent scholars respectively:Ai Si-qi regards practice as the activity of transforming the objective world and freedom as conscious compliance with necessity;Li Ze-hou proposes the subject-object framework of philosophy of practice;Gao Qing-hai uses a practical view to transcend the philosophical paradigm of "materialism-idealism";and Yu Wu-jin takes the responsibility of revealing the free essence of practice.Professor Yu views Kant as a bridge to Marx.By explicating the distinction made by Kant between "practice complying with natural concept" and "practice complying with free concept",he connects Marx's concept of practice with freedom in ontological sense and reveals a kind of theoretical foundation with most legitimacy for the unaccomplished enlightening undertaking and political freedom of Chinese society.Although various ideological dogmas and academic jargon have been covering the related projects of practice and thinking resources,Professor Yu has been persevering in thinking for the freedom of practice.This shows a philosopher's wisdom,conscience and courage.
