Abstract:The electricity generation and organic substances removal performance were investigated with sodium acetate and starch as carbon sources respectively in two chambers microbial fuel cells(MFCs),which were inoculated with anaerobic activated sludge. The results show that power output of MFCs was related to substrates. The maximum output voltage and power density of an MFC with sodium acetate were 0.43 V and 36.03(mW/m~2),and those of an MFC with starch were 0.39 V and 6.32(mW/m~2).It was indicated that the values of maximum output voltage and power density of MFCs with simple substrates were higher than those of MFCs with complex substrates.Run time 288 h,TOC removal rate of 91.15% and NH_3-N removal rate of 90.31% were obtained with sodium acetate, and 83.20% and 86.20% with starch respectively. It was shown that MFCs were capable of disposing organic substances in wastewater effectively, and generating electricity simultaneously.Obvious differences of bacterial morphology in two anode chambers were observed by SEM,bacilli and vibiro were predominance using sodium acetate, but cocci was superiority using starch. It was explored that different substrates in MFCs resulted in different predominant microbial population formed.
