Abstract:We use a partially Gutzwiller projected BCS d-wave wave function with an antiferromagnetic-weighting factor to study the ground-state phase diagram of a half-filled Hubbard-Heisenberg model in a square lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping t and a diagonal hopping t('). The calculations are carried out by using variational Monte Carlo method which treats the Gutzwiller projection explicitly. At large on-site Coulomb interaction U, the ground state is antiferromagnetic. As U decreases, the ground state becomes superconducting and eventually metallic. The phase diagram is obtained by extensive calculations. As compared to the strong effect of U/t, the phase boundaries turn out to be less sensitive to t(')/t. The result is consistent with the phase diagram in layered organic conductors and is compared to the earlier mean-field result based on the Gutzwiller approximation.

Abstract:We present a numerical study on ground state properties of a one-dimensional (1D) general Hubbard model (GHM) with particle-assisted tunnelling rates and repulsive on-site interaction (positive-U), which describes fermionic atoms in an anisotropic optical lattice near a wide Feshbach resonance. For our calculation, we utilize the time evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm, which is an extension of the density matrix renormalization group and provides a well-controlled method for 1D systems. We show that the positive-U GHM, when hole-doped from half-filling, exhibits a phase with coexistence of quasi-long-range superfluid and charge-density-wave orders. This feature is different from the property of the conventional Hubbard model with positive-U, indicating the particle-assisted tunnelling mechanism in GHM brings in qualitatively new physics.
From Hubbard model to t-J-U model: a canonical transformation formalism, the metal-insulator transition and mean-field state

Abstract:We prove that the t-J-U model can be deduced from the Hubbard model at a large but finite U by a canonical transformation. We argue that the system may have a metal-insulator transition at a critical on-site Coulomb interaction whose value, however, is smaller than that in previous calculations in which the kinetic energy has a double counting. In a mean field theory and a special choice of the parameters, we show that the metallic state may be equivalent to the gossamer superconducting state proposed by Laughlin recently.

Abstract:We use a renormalized mean-field theory to study the Gutzwiller projected Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer states of the extended Hubbard model in the large U limit or the t-t '-J-J ' model on a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. At small t(')/t, the frustration due to the diagonal terms of t ' and J ' does not alter the d(x)(2)-y(2)-wave pairing symmetry, and the negative (positive) t '/t enhances (suppresses) the pairing order parameter. At large t '/t, the ground state has an s-s wave symmetry. At the intermediate t '/t, the ground state is d+id or d+is wave with time reversal symmetry broken.
Effective theory and emergent $SU(2)$ symmetry in the flat bands of attractive Hubbard models

Abstract:In a partially filled flat Bloch band electrons do not have a well defined Fermi surface and hence the low-energy theory is not a Fermi liquid. Neverethless, under the influence of an attractive interaction, a superconductor well described by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) wave function can arise. Here we study the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of a generic Hubbard model with a flat band. We obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the flat band physics by eliminating higher lying bands via perturbative Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. At first order in the interaction energy we recover the usual procedure of projecting the interaction term onto the flat band Wannier functions. We show that the BCS wave function is the exact ground state of the projected interaction Hamiltonian and that the compressibility is diverging as a consequence of an emergent $SU(2)$ symmetry. This symmetry is broken by second order interband transitions resulting in a finite compressibility, which we illustrate for a one-dimensional ladder with two perfectly flat bands. These results motivate a further approximation leading to an effective ferromagnetic Heisenberg model. The gauge-invariant result for the superfluid weight of a flat band can be obtained from the ferromagnetic Heisenberg model only if the maximally localized Wannier functions in the Marzari-Vanderbilt sense are used. Finally, we prove an important inequality $D \geq \mathcal{W}^2$ between the Drude weight $D$ and the winding number $\mathcal{W}$, which guarantees ballistic transport for topologically nontrivial flat bands in one dimension.

Abstract:Doping a Mott insulator gives rise to unconventional superconducting correlations. Here we address the interplay between d-wave superconductivity and Mott physics using the two-dimensional Hubbard model with cellular dynamical mean-field theory on a $2\times2$ plaquette. Our approach is to study superconducting correlations from the perspective of a cluster quantum impurity model embedded in a self-consistent bath. At the level of the cluster, we calculate the probabilities of the possible cluster electrons configurations. Upon condensation we find an increased probability that cluster electrons occupy a four-electron singlet configuration, enabling us to identify this type of short-range spin correlations as key to superconducting pairing. The increased probability of this four-electron singlet comes at the expense of a reduced probability of a four-electron triplet with no significant probability redistribution of fluctuations of charges. This allows us to establish that superconductivity at the level of the cluster primarily involves a reorganisation of short-range spin correlations rather than charge correlations. We gain information about the bath by studying the spectral weight of the hybridization function. Upon condensation, we find a transfer of spectral weight leading to the opening of a superconducting gap. We use these insights to interpret the signatures of superconducting correlations in the density of states of the system and in the zero-frequency spin susceptibility.

Abstract:Using the recently introduced multiloop extension of the functional renormalization group, we compute the magnetic, density, and superconducting susceptibilities of the two-dimensional Hubbard model at weak coupling and present a detailed analysis of their evolution with temperature, interaction strength, and loop order. By breaking down the susceptibilities into contributions from the bare susceptibility and the individual channels, we investigate their relative importance as well as the channel interplay. In particular, we trace the influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations on the $d$-wave superconductivity and provide an analytical understanding for the observed behavior.

Abstract:One- and two-dimensional attractive Hubbard models in the presence of magnetic field h are studied in a wide range of on-site interaction strength U, temperature T and electron concentration n by means of the generalized self-consistent field (GSCF) approach with renormalized chemical potential. Pairing, the smooth crossover from the BCS regime into the Bose condensation state and the inhomogeneous superconductivity with the non-uniform order parameter are investigated. The excitation spectrum, the momentum distribution function and thermodynamic properties, including the concentration of double occupied sites, the kinetic energy, and the chemical potential, are calculated. The numerical calculations are found in a good agreement with the Bethe-ansatz results and quantum Monte-Carlo calculations in a wide range of system parameters U, n and h. The GSCF theory correctly displays the separation of the energy gap from the order parameter (crossover) as n or |U| decrease. The concentration of double occupied sites and the bound electron pairs n pair are calculated and we found a simple relationship between the order parameter and n pair , valid for the arbitrary U and all n in any dimension. The developed GSCF approach in magnetic field suggests a smooth transition into the inhomogeneous superconducting state.
Exact results of the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model

Abstract:We present analytical results of the fundamental properties of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model with a repulsive interaction. The new model results with arbitrary external fields include: (I) using the exact solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations of the Hubbard model, we first rigorously calculate the gapless spin and charge excitations, exhibiting exotic features of fractionalized spinons and holons. We then investigate the gapped excitations in terms of the spin string and thek-Λstring bound states at arbitrary driving fields, showing subtle differences in spin magnons and chargeη-pair excitations. (II) For a high-density and high spin magnetization region, i.e. near the quadruple critical point, we further analytically obtain the thermodynamic properties, dimensionless ratios and scaling functions near quantum phase transitions. (III) Importantly, we give the general scaling functions at quantum criticality for arbitrary filling and interaction strength. These can directly apply to other integrable models. (IV) Based on the fractional excitations and the scaling laws, the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid (SILL) with only the charge propagation mode is elucidated by the asymptotic of the two-point correlation functions with the help of conformal field theory. We also, for the first time, obtain the analytical results of the thermodynamics for the SILL. (V) Finally, to capture deeper insights into the Mott insulator and interaction-driven criticality, we further study the double occupancy and propose its associated contact and contact susceptibilities, through which an adiabatic cooling scheme based upon quantum criticality is proposed. In this scenario, we build up general relations among arbitrary external- and internal-potential-driven quantum phase transitions, providing a comprehensive understanding of quantum criticality. Our methods offer rich perspectives of quantum integrability and offer promising guidance for future experiments with interacting electrons and ultracold atoms, both with and without a lattice.

Abstract:A novel effective Hamiltonian in the subspace of singly occupied states is obtained by applying the Gutzwiller projection approach to a generalized Hubbard model with the interactions between two nearest- neighbor sites. This model provides a more complete description of the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. The system is not necessarily in a ferromagnetic state as temperature approaches zero at any doping level. The system, however, must be in an antiferromagnetic state at the origin of the doping-temperature plane. Moreover, the model exhibits superconductivity in a doped region at sufficiently low temperatures. We summarize the studies and provide a phase diagram of the antiferromagnetism and the superconductivity of the model in the doping-temperature plane here. Details will be presented in subsequent papers.
The Extended Bose Hubbard Model on the Two Dimensional Honeycomb Lattice

Abstract:We study the extended Bose-Hubbard model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice by using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present the ground state phase diagrams for both the hard-core case and the soft-core case. For the hard-core case, the transition between $\rho=1/2$ solid and the superfluid is first order and the supersolid state is unstable towards phase separation. For the soft-core case, due to the presence of the multiple occupation, a stable particle induced supersolid (SS-p) phase emerges when $1/2<\rho<1$. The transition from the solid at $\rho=1/2$ to the SS-p is second order with the superfluid density scaling as $ \rho_{s} \sim \rho-1/2 $. The SS-p has the same diagonal order as the solid at $ \rho=1/2 $. As the chemical potential increasing further, the SS-p will turn into a solid where two bosons occupying each site of a sublattice through a first order transition. We also calculate the critical exponents of the transition between $\rho=1/2$ solid and superfluid at the Heisenberg point for the hard core case. We find the dynamical critical exponent $z=0.15$, which is smaller than results obtained on smaller lattices. This indicates that $ z $ approaches zero in the thermodynamic limit, so the transition is also first order even at the Heisenberg point.

Abstract:We extend and apply a recently introduced quasi-particle functional renormalisation group scheme to the two-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbour hopping and away from half filling. We confirm the generation of superconducting correlations in some regions of the phase diagram, but also find that the inclusion of self-energy feedback by means of a decreasing quasi-particle weight can suppress superconducting tendencies more than anti-ferromagnetic correlations by which they are generated. As a supplement, we provide sample results for the self-energy in second-order perturbation theory and address some conceptual matters.

An exact formula for the optical conductivity of the two dimensional Hubbard model and its application to the cuprate superconductors

Abstract:Understanding the origin of electron incoherence is believed to be the first step toward the resolution of the mysteries of the high-T$_{c}$ cuprate superconductors. Such electron incoherence manifests itself most evidently in the non-Drude form of the optical absorption spectrum of the system. The spectral weight transfer related to such dissipative response, which is absent in conventional Fermi liquid metal, has direct consequence on the dc transport property of the system. However, a theoretical study of the optical conductivity of a strongly correlated model is a formidable task. Here we present an exact formula for the optical conductivity of the 2D Hubbard model from the low energy effective theory perspective. We show that the optical conductivity in Matsubara frequency of the 2D Hubbard model can be represented as the ensemble average of the optical conductivity of non-interacting systems in the background of fluctuating local moment. We find that such an ensemble average can be done exactly with a sign-problem-free Monte Carlo simulation if we assume the widely adopted Millis-Monien-Pines spin susceptibility for the fluctuating local moment. For thermal fluctuation of the local moment, our formula can be used to calculate directly the optical conductivity in real frequency which can be compared with the result of optical measurements in the cuprate superconductors.

Two-dimensional extended Hubbard model: doping, next-nearest neighbor hopping and phase diagrams

Abstract:Using the strong coupling diagram technique, we investigate the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice. This approach allows for charge and spin fluctuations and a short-range antiferromagnetic order at nonzero temperatures. The model features the first-order phase transition to states with alternating site occupations (SAO) at the intersite repulsion $v=v_c$. In this work, we show that doping decreases $v_c$. For a nonzero next-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$, less mobile carriers produce a stronger fall in $v_c$. For half-filling and $t'=0$, we consider phase diagrams for a fixed temperature $T$, on-site $U$, and intersite repulsions. The diagrams contain regions of SAO, Mott insulator, and several metallic states distinguished by their densities of states. Two of them are characterized by a dip and a peak at the Fermi level. The dip originates from the Slater mechanism for itinerant electrons, while the peak to bound states of electrons with localized magnetic moments. The existence of these two metallic regions in the phase diagram is a manifestation of the Pomeranchuk effect. The boundary between these regions reveals itself as a kink in the curve $v_c(T)$ and as a maximum in the $T$ dependence of the double occupancy $D$. Our calculated $D$ for different values of $v$, $U$, and $T$ are in semiquantitative agreement with Monte Carlo results.

Abstract:Layered organic superconductors are on the verge of the Mott insulator. We use the Gutzwiller variational method to study a two-dimensional Hubbard model including a spin exchange coupling term as a minimal model for the compounds. The ground state is found to be a Gossamer superconductor at small on-site Coulomb repulsion U and an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at large U, separated by a first order phase transition. Our theory is qualitatively consistent with major experiments reported in organic superconductors.
Fermi surface evolution of the 2D Hubbard model within a novel four-pole approximation

Abstract:We present a novel solution of the 2D Hubbard model in the framework of the Composite Operator Method within a four-pole approximation. We adopt a basis of four fields: the two Hubbard operators plus two fields describing the Hubbard transitions dressed by nearest-neighbor spin fluctuations. We include these nonlocal operators because spin fluctuations play a dominant role in strongly correlated electronic systems with respect to other types of nonlocal charge, pair and double-occupancy fluctuations. The approximate solution performs very well once compared with advanced (semi-) numerical methods from the weak-to the strong-coupling regime, being by far less computational-resource demanding. We adopt this solution to study the single-particle properties of the model in the strong coupling regime, where the effects of strong short-range magnetic correlations are more relevant and could be responsible for anomalous features. In particular, we will focus on the characterization of the Fermi surface and of its evolution with doping.

Dynamical Expansion of the Doped Hubbard Model

Abstract:We construct a new (1) slave spin representation for the single band Hubbard model in the large- limit. The mean-field theory in this representation is more amenable to describe both the spin-charge-separation physics of the Mott insulator at half-filling and the strange metal behavior at finite doping. By employing a dynamical Green's function theory for slave spins, we calculate the single-particle spectral function of electrons, and the result is comparable to that in dynamical mean field theories. We then formulate a dynamical expansion for the doped Hubbard model that reproduces the mean-field results at the lowest order of expansion. To the next order of expansion, it naturally yields an effective low-energy theory of a model for spinons self-consistently coupled to an model for the slave spins. We show that the superexchange is renormalized by doping, in agreement with the Gutzwiller approximation. Surprisingly, we find a new channel of exchange interactions which survives in the infinite limit, as a manifestation of the Nagaoka ferromagnetism.

Mean Field Study of Superconductivity in the Square Lattice $t$-$J$ Model with Three-Site Hopping

Abstract:It remains an open question whether the two-dimensional single-band pure Hubbard model and its related pure $t$-$J$ model truly capture the superconducting order in cuprates. Recent numerical studies on this issue have raised a notable disparity in superconducting order between the pure Hubbard model and the pure $t$-$J$ model. Inspired by these, we investigate the role of the three-site hopping term in $d$-wave superconductivity, such a term is usually neglected in the effective Hamiltonian of the Hubbard model, though its amplitude is of the same order as the superexchange coupling $J$ in the $t$-$J$ model. Our slave-boson mean-field solution demonstrates the suppression of $d$-wave superconducting order by incorporating the three-site hopping term, consistent with numerical observations by the density matrix renormalization group. This suppression could be understood as a result of competition between superexchange interaction and three-site hopping, the former favors $d$-wave pairing while the latter favors $s$-wave pairing. We also discussed its role in quasiparticle dispersion and boson-condensation temperature. Our findings may offer an alternative understanding of the recent numerical contrasting findings in the strong coupling regime: the absent or weak superconductivity in the pure Hubbard model, while the robust superconductivity in the $t$-$J$ model without including the three-site hopping term.

Abstract:To date, the Hubbard model and its strong coupling limit, the t-J model, serve as the canonical model for strongly correlated electron systems in solids. Approximating the Coulomb interaction by only the on-site term (Hubbard U-term), however, may not be sufficient to describe the essential physics of interacting electron systems. We develop a more complete model in which all the next leading order terms besides the on-site term are retained. Moreover, we discuss how the inclusion of these neglected interaction terms in the Hubbard model changes the t-J model.
