Abstract:The electrical power cable is one of the basic energy carriers for electrical transmission in power grids , whose operation reliability has noticeable impacts on the safety of a power grid .The diagnostic testing contains the diagnostic and locating of the existing fault of electrical power cables , as well as monitoring the electrical cable state to find the existing and potential faults during their operation , which are both very important for improving the operation reliability of the power grids .In this paper , we summarize basic mechanisms of the edging and fault of the electrical power cable and review all kinds of known techniques for electrical power cable diagnostic testing .Based on the pres-ented discussion and recent developments of the smart grids , the development trend and the future challenges of the electrical power cable diagnostic testing are predicted .
Investigation on Steady State Characteristics and Loss Reduction Measures of 220 Kv Power Cables

Abstract:With the rapid development of urbanization in China, power cables have gradually occupied the main position in the urban network, and the loss caused by the power cables in the power transmission has also continually increased. In this paper, the node admittance matrix of a power cable system is firstly constructed based on transmission line theory, thereafter an accurate method for solving the steady-state model of cable system is proposed. Introducing an additional series impedance at the cable joint can have a good loss reduction effect. By comparing the series resistance and reactance for the cable loss reduction characteristics, it is found that the series reactance has better loss reduction characteristics. Compared with the initial loss, when the series reactance value is 10 Ω, the total loss of the power cable is reduced by 88.97%, and no active power is generated. The power loss can be further reduced by the combination of the impedance amplitude and the phase angle. When the impedance is less than 2 Ω, its phase angle should be 60°, and if the impedance is more than 2 Ω, the phase angle should be 90°.

Abstract:A control and signal processing system is designed and implemented for fault detection of cab electric circuit in various types of vehicles.The acquisition,input and processing of analogue and digital signals and the simulation on sensor signals of cab instruments are realized for different detected objects of cab electric circuit respectively.Databases for cab electric circuit and its detecting results are also set up for real time display and subsequent inquiry,including remote inquiry by intranet.The trial operation on cab production line shows that the system functions stable and reliable.

Abstract:Partial discharge (PD) is indicative of insulation defects in power cable joints. Cross-bonding cable joints have a break in the joint shield that interrupts the screen of the jointed cables. It is possible for radio frequency (RF) signals of PD in the joints to emit from the shield break. This paper presents the use of off-the-shelf RF sensors at the shield break for non-intrusive PD detection. Measuring results from a 35 kV XLPE cable joint sample with artificial defects suggest that PD-induced electric and magnetic fields can be detected simultaneously with this approach. Typical pulses measured are limited to approximately 500 ns in duration, and the FFT spectrum of the pulses is mainly distributed at frequencies below 200 MHz. Average pulse magnitude ranging from about 6 to 22 mV can be measured between 10-15 kV. Increasing the measuring distance can cause the measured pulse magnitude to decease exponentially. Additionally, numerical simulations show that reducing the length of the shield break can cause the pulse magnitude recorded at the shield break to decrease gradually. The presented approach can potentially be used for cost-effective and non-intrusive detection of PD in cross-bonding cable joints.

Abstract:The power supply reliability of the urban distribution networks is being challenged by cable faults. Owing to the complex factors, such as system neutral, fault condition, and DG integration, it is difficult to detect and locate the fault cable. In this paper, the equivalent circuit model of the distribution cable is firstly created by considering the multi-conductor couplings. The mathematical relation of the amplitude differences between zero-sequence currents and those flowing in cable sheaths and armors at the local end of the healthy and fault cables are then derived in theory. Finally, according to the network topology and measurement locations, a novel method for identifying the fault cable section is proposed by using the defined space-measurement matrix. The simulation model of a real urban distribution network is established in PSCAD/EMTDC. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method are validated. The results demonstrate that the method is barely affected by the neutral grounding mode, fault initial condition, and distributed generation (DG) penetration level.

Abstract:Partial discharge (PD) detection and analysis plays a crucial role for acceptance testing and condition monitoring of power cables. Various aspects are related to PD in power cables from theory to practice. This paper first summarizes the PD mechanism and models used for PD analysis in power cables. Afterwards, PD detection is addressed in the aspects of off-line test, on-line test, and sensors. PD analysis is discussed in detail. Specifically, related quantities and algorithms for PD analysis are outlined. PD characteristics with affecting factors, e.g., dielectric type, load, and applied voltage are discussed. Experience on PD development trend with measurements in field is analyzed. Based on the comprehensive review, challenges of PD detection and analysis along a power cable are proposed.

Abstract:Power cables are an important carrier for the transmission of electrical energy in power systems. For the safe operation of power systems, online monitoring and evaluation of the operational status of power cables is vital. This paper reviews the recent research status of online monitoring of multiple parameters in power cables, including temperature, vibration, stress, partial discharge, sheath current, dielectric loss and DC component. Various different methods for assessing the condition of power cables are also reviewed and the latest research advances in multi-parameter intelligent operation and maintenance techniques for power cables are summarised. Although considerable progress has been made in condition online monitoring and evaluation in terms of measurement methods, measurement accuracy and fault location, there are still many shortcomings that require further research, including the reliability of the long-term operation of sensors, the accuracy, sensitivity and anti-interference performance of sensors, the effectiveness of data acquisition and transmission and the accuracy of fault location methods. Existing challenges and prospects for the development of research into online monitoring of power cables are presented.

Abstract:Multiple potential defects in cables cannot be detected and localized due to the low detection sensitivity of the time-domain reflectometry (TDR) method, as well as the cross-term interference problem of the time- and frequency-domain reflectometry method. A new method for fault detection in underground power cables is proposed based on the spectrum of propagation function. First, the propagation characteristics of various frequency signals in cables are analyzed to identify the causes of local irregularities in the spectrum of the propagation function (SPF) resulting from defects. Furthermore, the locations of defects are successfully identified using the integral transform algorithm. As broadband impedance spectroscopy (BIS) cannot accurately measure the input impedance of a 163 m cable for defect detection, the spectrum of propagation function is more suitable for long-distance cables. Finally, cables of 50, 66, and 163 m lengths are examined for mechanical damage and thermal aging defects. The fault localization error is within 0.21%, providing a technical reference for fault detection of underground cables.

Abstract:Abstract With the widespread application of stable high-voltage power cables, cable failures have gradually become the main source of major accidents in the process of power transmission. The most easily damaged part is the cable joint. Since the cable joints are made on site, it is easy to introduce high-voltage cable defects and cause insulation failures. Therefore, the defect detection of high-voltage voltage joints is particularly important. In order to promote the process of urbanization, ensure people’s life quality and personal safety, the popularization of high-voltage cables is an inevitable trend. However, difficulties will be encountered in the detection of cable joint faults. To improve the detection efficiency, relatively extensive research has been carried out on the detection of high-voltage cable joints at home and abroad. Based on the high-speed light sensing and pressure wave method, the online detection method of cable joint defects proposed in this paper has accurate, fast, convenient and non-contact online detection features.

Abstract:Power cable undertakes the important task of power transmission. In recent years, the use of power cables is increasing, and its safe and reliable operation is very important to ensure the stable operation of distribution system. However, the cable is deeply buried in the ground, so it is difficult to find the problem in time and reliably in ordinary daily inspection. In recent years, the number of cable faults has increased greatly, and the fire failure caused by the explosion of cable intermediate joint accounts for more than 80%. Taking a typical large-scale fire accident of distribution cable as an example, this paper deeply analyzes the prominent problems existing in the installation process of cables and accessories, line protection configuration, operation and maintenance of cable operation environment. The case has high learning value and significant guiding significance. It basically covers the prominent problems in technology, process and management of current distribution cable. Through in-depth analysis of the case, targeted and reliable solutions are proposed, which can effectively improve the operation level of distribution network.

Abstract:Fiber optic communication is the primary communication method in large backbone power communication networks. The fiber optic network is carried on power communication optical cables, making the reliability of power communication optical cables greatly influence the communication service quality of the fiber optic network. When a fiber optic cable fault occurs, it is essential to detect and rectify it promptly. OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) is a commonly used tool for fiber optic cable fault detection. It is based on the backscattering fiber sensing technology and can measure the optical power curve that reflects the status of the fiber optic link. To determine whether a fiber optic cable has a fault and identify its location from the OTDR curve, analysis of the OTDR curve is necessary.This study focuses on event detection algorithms based on OTDR analysis and analyzes and verifies the two-point method and wavelet analysis method using Matlab. The two-point method locates events based on the slope changes in the curve, but it is susceptible to noise interference. On the other hand, the wavelet analysis method locates events based on the amplitude of the signal's high-frequency coefficients, offering higher positioning accuracy. The selection of wavelet basis and scale is crucial in signal wavelet analysis. This study combines the characteristics of OTDR curves and selects appropriate wavelet bases and scales. The experimental results show that this analysis method can accurately locate fault points and has practical application value.

Abstract:In recent years, cable faults increases year by year with the widespread use of power cable lines, among which, cable joint defects become one of the most important factors affecting the safe and stable operation of transmission cables. Recently, a switch protection work of the 110kV cable line 131 tripped, resulting in power cables change and its three T-connection lines power failure. After the troubleshooting the author found that there are defects in the intermediate of No. 1 connector well cable. In this paper, a detailed introduction about this accident of cable equipment is made and the cause is analyzed in-depth. The study found that there are some problems in the design and installation of the cable joint weld joint. Due to many this type of cable lines run in power grid, and at the same time to avoid such equipment defects in new project, the corresponding suggestions based on the cause analysis and the accident situation was put forward, which is beneficial to eliminate safety hazards in time and ensure the stable operation of the cable lines.

Abstract:Power cable defect detection and location is a crucial aspect in power asset maintenance. Impedance spectrum measurement can be used as a non‐destructive tool for cable monitoring. Defects from overheating and moisture ingress are investigated by the authors, and it is shown that multi‐type cable defects can be detected and located by this methodology. With both electromagnetic analysis and experimental investigation, the relation between impedance variation and the dielectric permittivity is studied to reveal the method's mechanism. An approach to implement such impedance measurement online is proposed and its perspectives in terms of sensitivity is investigated by field scale tests. It is shown that 2% impedance variation due to defect should be detectable. Field scale tests show perspectives for online application with signal coupling through a high‐frequency current transformer with focus on the differences in waveforms obtained from the impedance measurements.

Abstract:Cables play an extremely important role in the transmission of electrical energy and communication signals in modern large-scale electrical systems. Early cable insulation defects often cause cable insulation breakdown, leading to permanent insulation damage. However, it is often very difficult to accurately detect these potential local defects. This paper proposes a novel non-destructive detection method for cable defect based on broadband impedance spectroscopy. Firstly, a simulation model of cable impedance spectrum is established. The correlation between impedance parameters and cable defects is well analyzed, and the influence of different defect locations on the cable impedance spectrum is studied. The effect of frequency spectrum on the accuracy of fault location is also analyzed. Finally, several cables of different lengths are simulated and the results show that this method has great spatial resolution within 0.3% for cables from several meters to hundreds of meters. It indicates that this non-destructive default location method has great potential in field application of cable diagnosis.

Abstract:In order to improve the practice in maintenance of power cables, this paper proposes a novel traveling-wave-based fault location method improved by unsupervised learning. The improvement mainly lies in the identification of the arrival time of the traveling wave. The proposed approach consists of four steps: (1) The traveling wave associated with the sheath currents of the cables are grouped in a matrix; (2) the use of dimensionality reduction by t-SNE (t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding) to reconstruct the matrix features in a low dimension; (3) application of the DBSCAN (density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) clustering to cluster the sample points by the closeness of the sample distribution; (4) the arrival time of the traveling wave can be identified by searching for the maximum slope point of the non-noise cluster with the fewest samples. Simulations and calculations have been carried out for both HV (high voltage) and MV (medium voltage) cables. Results indicate that the arrival time of the traveling wave can be identified for both HV cables and MV cables with/without noise, and the method is suitable with few random time errors of the recorded data. A lab-based experiment was carried out to validate the proposed method and helped to prove the effectiveness of the clustering and the fault location.

Abstract:Abstract Because of the frequent occurrence of power cable fault, rapid and accurate fault diagnosis is an important subject in this field. In this paper, the DR detection cases of cables and related components with different voltage levels are described and analyzed based on the research work of radiographic detection carried out by our research group in the field of cables and their accessories in the recent three years. The results show that the technology can effectively detect and analyze the internal damage of cable outer breaking point, the ablative defect of cable buffer layer, the size and position deviation of cable joint. Due to the large number of cable layers and material types, the paper also gives some solutions to the problem of shielding copper core and some examples of abnormal image identification. Cable ontology, cable joints and other accessories produced by different manufacturers have certain structural differences due to numerous processes and procedures. It is necessary to continue to carry out research on DR testing for cable engineering structural parts of different types, establish relevant standard comparison atlas and provide reference for the application of DR technology in the field of cable testing.
