Abstract:The progress on new types of agitated apparatus for polymer devolatilization was reviewed, while the key issues on the development of new devolatilization devices were analyzed. The characteristics of flow field,mixing,film forming and surface renewal are the key factors to strengthen the mass transfer process. Developing highly efficient and self-cleaning devices for polymer devolatilization is the major prospect in this field. The applications of computational fluid mechanics (CFD) simulations on transfer process in such devices were also discussed. Finite element method combined with mesh superposition technique(MST) and finite volume method combined with dynamic mesh technique have been used to deal with problems such as complex geometric blades and fins,twin-shaft rotating motion,tiny gaps within engaged areas and so on. Gas-liquid interface can be precisely tracked by means of volume of fluid(VOF) multiphase flow model. The film forming and surface renewal characteristics can be investigated,which contributes to learn more about the mass transfer mechanism. CFD numerical simulation offers a new idea for designing highly efficient devices for polymer devolatilization.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to investigate the film flow on rotating wheel for a horizontal twin-shaft reactor. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) model combined with the sliding mesh method was chosen to simulate the film formation process. The mechanism on a rotating wheel distinguishes itself from that on a regular solid disk. Bounded film with only one gas-liquid interface and unbounded film with two gas-liquid interfaces coexist due to the presence of an open window under certain operation conditions. The unbounded film inside open window is significantly thinner and returns more rapidly to the liquid pool. The minimum rotating speed for unbounded film formation decreases when the liquid viscosity increases. The open window on the rotating wheel can enhance the film flow and surface renewal, due to the interaction and transition between the unbounded film inside the open window zone and the bounded film on the ring and spoke zones, but this intensification is limited for highly viscous polymers. Abstract:Polyolefins, widely used for packaging, construction, and electronics, facilitate daily life but cause severe environmental pollution when discarded after usage. Chemical recycling of polyolefins has received widespread attention for eliminating polyolefin pollution, as it is promising to convert polyolefin wastes to high-value chemicals (e.g., fuels, light olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons). However, the chemical recycling of polyolefins typically involves high-viscosity, high-temperature and high-pressure, and its efficiency depends on the catalytic materials, reaction conditions, and more essentially, on the reactors which are overlooked in previous studies. Herein, this review first introduces the mechanisms and influencing factors of polyolefin waste upcycling, followed by a brief overview of in situ and ex situ processes. Emphatically, the review focuses on the various reactors used in polyolefin recycling (i.e., batch/semi-batch reactor, fixed bed reactor, fluidized bed reactor, conical spouted bed reactor, screw reactor, molten metal bed reactor, vertical falling film reactor, rotary kiln reactor and microwave-assisted reactor) and their respective merits and demerits. Nevertheless, challenges remain in developing highly efficient reacting techniques to realize the practical application. In light of this, the review is concluded with recommendations and prospects to enlighten the future of polyolefin upcycling.

Abstract:Advances of the key technique and research program for p-xylene oxidation reactor in polyester industry were reviewed. The characteristics of p-xylene oxidation reaction in liquid phase, the chemical engineering features of oxidation reactor and the research and development strategies of oxidation reactor were discussed. Gas-liquid dispersion, liquid-liquid mixing and solid particles suspension should be considered during reactor design. The future development trends was also analyzed.

Abstract:Film formation characteristics in a horizontal twin-shaft rotating disk reactor for polymer devolatilization have been investigated by means of experiment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Volume of fluid (VOF) model has been used to simulate the film formation process and predict the film thickness distribution on the rotating disks, validated experimentally by electrical conductance method. The mechanism for the film formation in twin-shaft rotating disk reactor is different from that in single-shaft reactor, due to the effect of overlapping zone between two adjacent disks. There are two kinds of films generated in the reactor. The free film, greatly affected by the liquid viscosity and rotating speed, shows the similar characteristics with that in the single-shaft reactor. The scraped film, generated by overlapping zone, is much thinner and more uniform than the free film for highly viscous liquid. Compared with the viscosity and the rotating speed, the disk clearance plays a more significant role in determining the thickness and the shape of the scraped film. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The gas-solid vertical single helical ribbon agitated reactor is widely used in the polypropylene industry. The gas flow and mass transfer determine the heat transfer capacity and product quality. In this work, the pressure drop was measured below and above minimum fluidization velocity (umf). Then, the axial and radial dispersion coefficients (DL and DR) were estimated below umf by measuring the step residence time distribution and the stationary radial tracer profiles, respectively. Pressure analysis show the agitation significantly reduces the bed pressure drop, changing the fixed bed below umf and bubbling bed above umf to an agitated bed with a periodic voidage. The DL was proportional to the gas velocity, with little influences of the stirring speed. The radial tracer profiles show the bed is divided by the inner diameter of the helical ribbon into the peripheral ascending region and the central descending region, without gas exchange between them. Furthermore. the tracer profiles in the descending region are classified into two types. For type I, the DR, calculated by the plug flow model with radial dispersion, is proportional to the gas velocity, with little effects of stirring speed. Type II shows uniform profiles due to the deflection of the gas flow toward the low pressure area at the inner diameter of helical ribbon. The causes of the two types are explained by the relative size of particle circulation and gas flux. These two flow regimes are quantitatively clarified with an empirical correlation of Re and Fr as flow regime transition boundary, namely dispersed plug flow and perfect mixing flow. With lower Re and higher Fr, it changes from dispersed plug flow to perfect mixing flow.

Abstract:A deep understanding of hydrodynamics and film formation characteristics is a prerequisite for the design of twin-shaft kneaders. In this work, the hydrodynamics and film formation characteristics of a self-cleaning twin-shaft kneader are investigated using computational fluid dynamics method. Because of the intermeshing interaction and scratching action of the kneader rods, both bounded films and free films coexist in the kneader. Since both shafts rotate clockwise, more liquid is accumulated in the left cylinder. The liquid level of the left cylinder is higher which reduces the film formation rate of the left zone. The film formation rate in the right zone is 1.3-1.8 times that of the left zone and overlapping zone. The differences between the left and right cylinders would cause inconsistent devolatilization performances. To reduce the negative effects of asymmetric level, a static kneading rod is used to reduce the liquid level of the left zone and increase the film formation rate by 15%. We notice that adding a static kneading rod reduces the power consumption by 10%-30% compared with increasing the rotating speed to the same film formation rate. It could be an efficient method for polymer devolatilization.

Abstract:The devolatilization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the viscous liquid like polymers was necessary but of great challenge caused by the high viscosity. In this work, different packing structures were manufactured in a rotating packed bed (RPB), including the stainless steel wire mesh packing (SMP), 3D-printed column packing (PCP), 3D-printed mesh packing with circular fibers (PMP-C), and 3D-printed mesh packing with drop-shaped fibers (PMP-D). The devolatilization performance of the RPB was investigated with the acetone-silicon oil working system. Results indicated that modifying the fiber shape of packing effectively intensified the devolatilization in the RPB. The removal efficiency (η) and volumetric mass transfer coefficient (KLa) of the PMP-D were dramatically larger than the other three packings. Compared the PMP-D with the traditional SMP, the maximum η was enhanced from 40% to 50%, and the increment of KLa was 50% on average. The correlations to predict KLa were established, and the deviations from the experimental results were less than ± 20%.

Abstract:Chemical product engineering represents an emerging discipline rooted to chemical engineering. Its core content of research lies in precision production of chemical structures. Polymer products contain complex structures at multiple scales. Polymerization processes, to a large extent, determine polymer chain microstructures and morphologies. In the recent years, we developed various polymerization processes and produced polymers having precisely designed chain microstructures. These polymer products showed high performances and superior material properties in targeted applications. Our methodology employs kinetic modeling combined with reactor technologies, based on extensive mechanistic research on polymerization mechanisms. In controlled/living radical(co)polymeri-zation, we developed a novel model-based computer-programed semi-batch copolymerization technology that allows unprecedented precise control over end-to-end copolymer composition of individual chains. In catalytic polymerization of olefins, we developed a reactor technology for in-situ production of polyolefin alloys. This paper provides a brief summary of the recent advances in the polymer product engineering researches.

Abstract:Fluidized bed reactors are widely applied to the production of polyolefin resins. A novel dynamic operation mode of a liquid-containing fluidized bed reactor for ethylene polymerization is proposed. The spatial and temporal scale effects of the condensed liquid on the polymerization reaction conditions and chain structure of polyethylene are investigated by periodically introducing the condensed liquid into the fluidized bed reactor. It is found that the instantaneous yield of polyethylene, instantaneous molecular weight and instantaneous comonomer composition of polyethylene varied along with time in the same direction. The simulation results indicate that the dynamic operation mode of the liquid-containing fluidized bed reactor provides an effective approach to regulating the chain branching distribution of polyethylene.

Abstract:The fluidized bed is widely used in many industrial processes because of its vigorous mixing and heat transfer properties. However, when heat transfer is blocked, the particles are easily melted and agglomerated, and even cause the industrial reactor to shut down. From the point of mechanism analysis, the process of explosive agglomeration is a typical meso-scale problem in the fluidized bed, and there is a complex evolution process between particle fluidization and reactor shutdown. Grasping the regulation of meso-scale structure is one of the major challenges faced by chemical engineering. Thus, in this background, the fluidized bed acoustic emission detection technology, agglomeration fault self-repair technology, and a direct scale-up technique of the fluidized bed mathematical model were invented. These technologies have provided strong reliability for stable operation and have been successfully applied in 14 sets of industrial plants.

Abstract:Rotating packed bed (RPB) has been widely used in absorption, desorption, distillation, oxidation, crystallization, precipitation, polymerization, and production of nanoparticles. RPB utilizes centrifugal acceleration to intensify the mixing and mass-transfer processes. Under high-gravity, molecule diffusions are much faster than under normal gravity. With the centrifugal force generated by rotation, RPBs have considerable high mass-transfer and micromixing performance. However, because of the complexity of fluid flow inside the RPB, the flow experiments do not easily lead to the deeper understanding on the fluid dynamics in an RPB. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics model and two-, three-dimensional physical models have been developed to describe the RPB. Numerical simulation of the fluid flow and pressure drop in dry bed in an RPB using commercial software, Fluent, as a computational platform has been carried out. Different fluid flow rates, rotator speeds and gas flow rates have been systematically investigated. The preliminary simulation results show that the models used to describe the RPB can give rise to better understanding of the flow in an RPB.

Abstract:In this paper, the current hazardous waste disposal methods of heavy organic matter were reviewed and the craft process of molecular distillation technology on distillation residue, recycling and reduction of heavy and dangerous waste organic matter were analyzed. The yield and the influence on product viscosity of molecular distillation separation heavy resid under different technology conditions were studied and the results showed that the technology conditions of molecular distillation separation heavy resid is residual pressure 10 pa, temperature 250 oC, blown film machine speed 230 r/min. the properties of the oil distillated met the national standard of wax oil. The goals of using molecular distillation recycling waste organic matter and heavy resource waste reduction were achieved.

Abstract:Reviewing the development status of the reversed-phase emulsion polymerization system used in the field of oil and gas field development, this paper discusses the polymerization mechanism of reversed-phase emulsion in depth, analyzes five important factors affecting the polymerization process of reversed-phase emulsion, and elaborates on the application of reversed-phase emulsion polymerization system in hydraulic fracturing, acidification acid pressure, water regulation and blockage, tertiary oil recovery, drilling, and oilfield wastewater sewage treatment process. In addition, the future development direction of the reversed-phase emulsion polymerization system is predicted according to the complex process of the reversed-phase emulsion polymerization system. There are many influencing factors, etc., which point out the direction of the next step of development.

Abstract:Advance of highly viscous mixing technique and device in polymer reaction engineering was reviewed. The characteristics and applications of new types of impeller for wide viscosity range, horizontal self-cleaning mixer and other highly viscous mixing equipments were discussed. It was revealed that research and development of newly mixing device helped to the progress of highly viscous polymerization engineering, and self-cleaning reactor/mixer for highly viscous materials having a large freely usable volume was applicable especially for concentrated solution and bulk polymerization.

Abstract:In the polymer industry, product quality is usually determined by the molecular weight distribution of polymer products. We propose a comprehensive study of polymer product design through dynamic optimization of average molecular weights and the polydispersity index in batch free radical polymerization. After analyzing and validating the modified Stickler-Panke-Hamielec (SPH) model, this paper extends the model to achieve product design with a specified polymer molecular weight distribution for various optimization goals. Conversion maximization under isothermal conditions was studied first. We concluded that dynamic optimization is useful to obtain desired products. However, some specifications of polymer molecular weight distribution cannot be achieved under isothermal conditions. Therefore, optimization with piecewise constant temperature profiles was also studied to extend the range of product specifications. Considering the practical requirement for productivity in engineering applications, reaction time minimization with specified conversion was studied with various temperature profiles. Besides the strategy of optimizing the temperature profile, dynamic optimization of initiator feed profiles is also presented. The results show that polymer product design with a specified polymer molecular weight distribution can be achieved using dynamic optimization of the temperature and initiator profiles in a batch reaction.

Abstract:The boundaries of a target product quality profile of certain failure modes can be exploited to construct the operation window, a process design space (PDS), for the granulation process. The purpose of this study is to implement process design and development for the pulsed spray fluid bed granulation (PSFBG) on a laboratory-scale granulator. This work consists of three parts: (1) implementation of Process Analytical Technology (PAT) combined with multivariate data analysis to monitor the formulation characteristics including moisture content, particle size and granule yield; (2) adoption of a new design of experiments (DoE) method Definitive Screening Design (DSD), with the well-established PAT monitoring tools, to investigate the process response to the intended changes in the critical process parameters (CPPs); and finally, (3) the definition of a PDS for the PSFBG, within which the acceptable performance of the process is guaranteed. The effects of the process parameters (i.e., the inlet air temperature, inlet air relative humidity, binder spray rate, atomization pressure, pulse cycle and pulse width) on granule size were evaluated. Two different failure modes were identified based on the measured target product quality (granule size) profile: risk of bed collapse due to over-wetting and low granulating efficiency. Using the constructed PDS for desired granulation, the expected final granule attributes can be obtained through properly controlling the process trajectory by adjusting the process parameters.

Abstract:This paper deals with a systematic study of bubble-free polymer devolatilization. Experimental degassing tests are combined with a surface renewal analysis. For this purpose, a simplified extruder model is used as representative rotating degassing machine. It is a partially filled agitator vessel with a blade stirrer. A model substance system consisting of highly viscous polydimethylsiloxane as polymer and 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane as volatile allows the experiments to be carried out at ambient temperature. The driving force for the mass transfer is achieved by reducing the partial pressure in the gas phase via an inert gas flow of nitrogen. This allows the specific investigation of the mechanism of film degassing. The temporal decrease in the concentration of volatiles in the polymer solution is measured thermogravimetrically at three different filling levels and three different rotational speeds in a total of 18 test series. At the same time, the free surfaces and renewal times are determined by video recordings and numerical simulations. For this, the free CFD software OpenFOAM is used with a VOF-based free surface solver. The numerical results are validated by the experiments. It is shown that the deviations of the measured mass transfer data from the theoretical predictions of the common surface renewal models depend on the degassing degree. Mixing is the decisive factor which can be taken into account in the form of a corrected model for the design of degassing machines. Furthermore, it is shown that the gas-side mass transfer resistance is not negligibly small in all cases.

Abstract:Controlled/living radical copolymerization (CLRcoP) operated in a batch process is subject to composition drifting and thus produces spontaneous gradient copolymer. The composition distribution along the chain length of individual chains is solely determined by the reactivities of comonomers and the as-synthesized product is uncontrolled. Design of the composition vs. chain length profile provides a new route for developing polymer- materials with tailor-made properties. Presented in this article is a theoretical mainframe used for- the control over- composition distribution along the chain length in atom transfer radical copolymerization. The control is based on a semibatch reactor technology with programmed comonomer feeding rates. Illustrated are three copolymerization model systems with representative reactivity ratios. The targeted composition distribution profiles are uniform, linear gradient, parabolic gradient, hyperbolic gradient, and di-block and tri-block distributions.
