Abstract:In this paper we establish a formula, expressing the generalized Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index in terms of eta invariants of domain-wall massive Dirac operators, without assuming that the Dirac operator on the boundary is invertible. Compared with the original Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, this formula has the advantage that no global spectral projection boundary conditions appear. Our main tool is an asymptotic gluing formula for eta invariants proved by using a splitting principle developed by Douglas and Wojciechowski in adiabatic limit. The eta invariant splits into a contribution from the interior, one from the boundary, and an error term vanishing in the adiabatic limit process.

Abstract:In this talk, we review the heat kernel approach to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on closed manifolds, as well as the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary. We also discuss the odd dimensional counterparts of the above results. In particular, we describe a joint result with Xianzhe Dai on an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:The author presents an alternate proof of the Bismut-Zhang localization formula of ηinvariants, when the target manifold is a sphere, by using ideas of mod k index theory instead of the difficult analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau. As a consequence, it is shown that the R/Z part of the analytically defined ηinvariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional closed spin manifold can be expressed purely geometrically through a stable Chern-Simons current on a higher dimensional sphere. As a preliminary application, the author discusses the relation with the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer R/Z index theorem for unitary flat vector bundles, and proves an R refinement in the case where the Dirac operator is replaced by the Signature operator.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the eigenvalue problem of Dirac operator on a compact Riemannian manifold isometrically immersed into Euclidean space and derive some extrinsic estimates for the sum of arbitrary consecutive $n$ eigenvalues of the square of the Dirac operator acting on some Dirac invariant subbundles. As some applications, we deduce some eigenvalue inequalities on the compact submanifolds immersed into Euclidean space, unit sphere or projective spaces and further get some bounds of general Reilly type. In addition, we also establish some universal bounds under certain curvature condition and on the meanwhile provide an alternative proof for Anghel's result. In particular, utilizing Atiyah-Singer index theorem, we drive an upper bound estimate for the sum of the first $n$ nontrivial eigenvalues of Atiyah-Singer Laplacian acting on the spin manifolds without dimensional assumption.

Relative eta invariant and uniformly positive scalar curvature on non-compact manifolds

Abstract:On complete non-compact manifolds with bounded sectional curvature, we consider a class of self-adjoint Dirac-type operators called Dirac-Schrödinger operators. Assuming two Dirac-Schrödinger operators coincide at infinity, by previous work, one can define their relative eta invariant. A typical example of Dirac-Schrödinger operators is the (twisted) spin Dirac operators on spin manifolds which admit a Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature. In this case, using the relative eta invariant, we get a geometric formula for the spectral flow on non-compact manifolds, which induces a new proof of Gromov-Lawson's result about compact area enlargeable manifolds in odd dimensions. When two such spin Dirac operators are the boundary restriction of an operator on a manifold with non-compact boundary, under certain conditions, we obtain an index formula involving the relative eta invariant. This generalizes the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem to non-compact boundary situation. As a result, we can use the relative eta invariant to study the space of uniformly positive scalar curvature metrics on some non-compact connected sums.

Abstract:For a compact spin manifold M isometrically embedded into Euclidean space, we derive the extrinsic estimates from above and below for eigenvalues of the square of the Dirac operator, which depend on the second fundamental form of the embedding. We also show the bounds of the ratio of the eigenvalues. Since the unit sphere and the projective spaces admit the standard embedding into Euclidean spaces, we also obtain the corresponding results for their compact spin submanifolds.

Abstract:The construction of topological index maps for equivariant families of Dirac operators requires factoring a general smooth map through maps of a very simple type: zero sections of vector bundles, open embeddings, and vector bundle projections. Roughly speaking, a normally non-singular map is a map together with such a factorisation. These factorisations are models for the topological index map. Under some assumptions concerning the existence of equivariant vector bundles, any smooth map admits a normal factorisation, and two such factorisations are unique up to a certain notion of equivalence. To prove this, we generalise the Mostow Embedding Theorem to spaces equipped with proper groupoid actions. We also discuss orientations of normally non-singular maps with respect to a cohomology theory and show that oriented normally non-singular maps induce wrong-way maps on the chosen cohomology theory. For K-oriented normally non-singular maps, we also get a functor to Kasparov's equivariant KK-theory. We interpret this functor as a topological index map.

Abstract:Index theory for Lorentzian Dirac operators is a young subject with significant differences to elliptic index theory. It is based on microlocal analysis instead of standard elliptic theory and one of the main features is that a nontrivial index is caused by topologically nontrivial dynamics rather than nontrivial topology of the base manifold. In this paper we establish a local index formula for Lorentzian Dirac-type operators on globally hyperbolic spacetimes. This local formula implies an index theorem for general Dirac-type operators on spatially compact spacetimes with Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions on Cauchy hypersurfaces. This is significantly more general than the previously known theorems that require the compatibility of the connection with Clifford multiplication and the spatial Dirac operator on the Cauchy hypersurface to be selfadjoint with respect to a positive definite inner product.

Abstract:The present paper gives calculations in detail to prove several special cases of Atiyah-Singer theorem through supersymmetric $\sigma$-models. Some technical tricks are employed to calculate the determinants of fluctuation operators of the path integrals. An intuitive and geometric argument is applied to overcome the complicated calculation on spin fields twisted by gauge fields.

Abstract:For a bounded open set Omega in a complete oriented Riemannian n-manifold and a positive finite Borel measure mu with support contained in the closure of Omega, we define an associated Dirichlet Laplacian Delta_mu by assuming the Poincare inequality. We obtain sufficient conditions for the Laplacian to have compact resolvent and in this case, we prove the Hodge theorem for functions, which states that there exists an orthonormal basis of L^2(Omega,mu) consisting of eigenfunctions of Delta_mu, the eigenspaces are finite-dimensional, and the eigenvalues of -Delta_mu are real, countable, and increasing to infinity. One of these sufficient conditions is that the L^infty-dimension of mu is greater than n-2. The main tools we use are Toponogov's and Rauch's comparison theorems. We prove that the above results also hold for measures without compact support, provided the Riemannian manifold is of bounded geometry. We study the condition the L^infty-dimension of mu is greater than n-2 for self-similar and self-conformal measures. Results in this paper extend analogous ones by Hu et al., which are established for measures on R^n.
