Evaluation of Digital Photography Application in Color Matching of Porcelain Restorations

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the function of digital photos in improving cosmetic effect of individual ceramic restoration of anterior teeth.Methods Ninety patients for individual anterior ceramic restorations were divided randomly into 3 groups.Conventional color match,conventional color match plus digital photography and technician color match were applied respectively for different group.After cementation,the cosmetic evaluation of each restoration was made separately both by the patient and by the dentist.The chromatic aberration values between the restoration and the homonymous tooth were measured at the same time.The data were analyzed to compare the difference among three color matching methods.Results The color match effects were similar in terms of patient satisfaction,restoration surface texture,color variation,incisal translucency,and surface character,in the conventional color matching plus digital photography group and the technician color matching group,and both were better than the conventional color matching group.But there was no significant difference in contour,hue and chromatic aberration between these three groups.Conclusion Digital photography could improve the patient satisfaction and the cosmetic effect of anterior restoration in surface texture,color variation,incisal translucency,and surface character.But,the digital photography could not transmit more exact color information.
