Abstract:The authors put emphasis on the statistic and analysis of seismic-electrical abnormal rectangle pulsation signals and volcano data worldwide from 1991 to 1999. The worldwide seismic-electrical and volcano data are transformed into appropriate statistic models, which are sdl(i), sd2(i), sml(i), sm2(i), ved(i) and vem(i). Correlation coefficients, which are Rxdl,ved(m), Rsd2,ved (m),Rsml,vem (m),Rsm2,vem(m) between signal models and volcano eruption models are calculated and tested. The results show that there is relationship between the seismi-electric abnormal rectangle pulsation signals and volcano eruptions.

Abstract:The violent eruption of the Hunga (Tonga) submarine volcano on 15 January 2022 caused a 58 km‐heigh ash plume, catastrophic tsunami, and significant global seismic and infrasound waves. However, the physical mechanism underpinning its multiple‐explosive events remains unclear, and its resolvability relies on the seismic waveform source inversion. The studies of two different point‐source models, the seismic moment tensor (MT) and the single force (SF), have been performed separately for this eruption, which, interestingly, can explain the seismic data adequately. Here, we use a joint inversion of MT and SF to unravel a composite source of an explosion‐like MT and a significant upward force for the first major explosive event. Regarding the direction and magnitude, we propose that the upward force is likely a rebound force in response to the pressure drop on the seafloor because the water body above the volcano was abruptly uplifted by the shallow underwater explosion.

Abstract:There is evidence of tremor triggering by seismic waves emanating from distant large earthquakes. The frequency content of both triggered and ambient tremor are largely identical, suggesting that this property does not depend directly on the nature of the source. We show here that the model of plate dynamics developed earlier by us is an appropriate tool for describing tremor triggering. In the framework of this model, tremor is an internal response of a fault to a failure triggered by external disturbances. The model predicts generation of radiation in a frequency range defined by the fault parameters. Thus, although the amplitude and duration of a tremor burst may reflect the "personality" of the source, the frequency content does not. The model also explains why a tremor has no clear impulsive phase, in contrast to earthquakes. The relationship between tremor and low frequency earthquakes is discussed.

Abstract:Tsunami monitoring and early warning systems are mainly established to deal with seismogenic tsunamis generated by sudden seafloor fault displacement. However, a global tsunami triggered by the 2022 Tonga volcanic eruption promoted the need for tsunami early warning and hazard mitigation of non-seismogenic tsunamis in coastal countries. This paper studied the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of historical volcanic tsunamis and summarized high-risk areas of volcanic tsunamis. The circum southwestern Pacific volcanic zone, including the Sunda volcanic belt and the Indo-Australian plate, is a concentrated area of active volcanoes and major volcanic tsunamis. In addition, the challenges associated with adapting seismogenic tsunami techniques for use in the context of volcanic tsunamis were elucidated. At the same time, based on historical records and post-disaster surveys, typical historical volcanic tsunami events and involved mechanisms were summarized. The results show that a majority of volcanic tsunamis may involve multiple generation mechanisms, and some mechanisms show geographical distribution characteristics. The complexity of volcanic tsunami mechanisms poses challenges to tsunami early warning by measuring tsunami sources to evaluate the possible extent of impact, or using numerical modeling to simulate the process of a tsunami. Therefore, a concise overview of the lessons learned and the current status of early warning systems for volcanic tsunamis was provided. Finally, a conceptual scheme of monitoring systems for volcanic tsunamis based on historical volcanoes, real-time volcanic eruption information and sea level data, as well as remote sensing images, was presented.

Abstract:Abstract Submarine volcanic eruptions can induce major local and regional tsunami hazards through varied source mechanisms. Large‐scale experiments of tsunamis generated by submarine volcanic eruptions are conducted to study the cylindrical wave generation and propagation in a three‐dimensional wave basin. A unique volcanic tsunami generator (VTG) was deployed at the bottom of the wave basin to generate volcanic tsunamis with repeatable and controlled source parameters. The physical modeling is based on the generalized Froude number defined with the VTG velocity and the near source water depth. The pneumatically driven vertical stroke motion generates leading elevation waves in the wave basin. The tsunami waves generated by the VTG are measured with a wave gauge array. The wave maker performance is characterized by the dimensionless leading wave amplitudes and periods. The experimental data show the variations of the leading wave amplitude, period, and celerity along the radial propagation distance. The generated cylindrical waves belong to the weakly nonlinear wave regime in the near field with decaying wave amplitude along radial propagation. The attenuation rate of the leading wave exceeds the range from the linear wave theory in runs with higher Froude numbers. The dimensionless leading wave period increases with the dimensionless propagation distance due to the dispersion relation. Empirical equations for the characteristic wave parameters such as amplitudes and periods are derived. The experimental results contribute to the understanding of volcanic tsunami generation processes and may serve rapid volcanic tsunami hazard assessments as well as the advancement and validation of numerical models.

Abstract:Infrasonic and seismic tremor are signals released by active volcanoes. These signals play a crucial role in monitoring volcanic activity and providing insights into volcanic dynamics and hazards. Between December 2020 and February 2022, Mount Etna was characterized by an intense eruptive period, during which monitoring efforts were employed to investigate the characteristics and source signals. Our work focuses on analyzing volcanic tremors in both seismic and infrasound signals to understand their behavior and relationship with the volcano’s dynamics. In particular, the interval 14‐21 February 2021, comprising 4 lava fountain episodes, was taken into account. Concerning the data analysis, amplitude, spectral content, seismic volcanic tremor and infrasonic explosion‐quakes source locations have been computed. The results reveal that the seismic amplitude is closely related to emitted magma volume during the lava fountains. The study finds that most of the energy in volcanic tremors is concentrated below 5.0 Hz. During eruptive episodes, both seismic and infrasound signals exhibit lower frequencies, with variations between different stations due to propagation effects. Finally, two different source mechanisms of the seismic tremor were suggested: i) flow of gasses through a shallower permeable solid layer is likely to be responsible for the generation of volcanic tremor during non‐eruptive periods; ii) magmatic flows along the shallow plumbing system and the consequent impact of particles on the walls of the conduit during eruptive periods.

Abstract:Tsunamis generated by volcanic eruptions have risen to prominence since the December 2018 tsunami generated by the flank collapse of Anak Krakatau during a moderate eruption and then the global tsunami generated by the explosive eruption of the Hunga volcano in the Tongan Archipelago in January 2022. Both events cause fatalities and highlight the lack in tsunami warning systems to detect and warn for tsunamis induced by volcanic mechanisms. Following the Hunga Tonga—Hunga Ha'apai eruption and tsunami, an ad hoc working group on Tsunamis Generated by Volcanoes was formed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. Volcanic tsunamis differ from seismic tsunamis in that there are a wide range of source mechanisms that can generate the tsunamis waves and this makes understanding, modelling and monitoring volcanic tsunamis much more difficult than seismic tsunamis. This paper provides a review of both the mechanisms behind volcanic tsunamis and the variety of modelling techniques that can be used to simulate their effects for tsunami hazard assessment and forecasting. It gives an example of a volcanic tsunami risk assessment undertaken for Stromboli, outlines the requirement of volcanic monitoring to warn for tsunami hazard and provides examples of volcanic tsunami warning systems in Italy, the Hawaiian Island (USA), Tonga and Indonesia. The paper finishes by highlighting the need for implementing monitoring and warning systems for volcanic tsunamis for locations with submarine volcanoes or near-shore volcanoes which could potentially generate tsunamis.

Abstract:Volcanic activity can cause regional earthquakes before or during an eruption, while violent earthquakes are capable of changing static and dynamic stress-fields that may consequently accelerate or trigger volcanic eruption. It is thus important to consider the volcano and regional earthquake as an integrated system, which has implications for disaster prevention and may enable early warning. In this work, two magnetotelluric (MT) profiles were deployed across the active volcanic and seismic region in the northern Hainan Island, China. Data were inverted to generate a three-dimensional resistivity structure beneath the two profiles. The resistivity model shows a shallow (< 5 km) low-resistivity (< 10 Ωm) zone corresponding to Paleogene and Neogene sediments, and two conductors (10–30 Ωm) at depths of 5–12 km. The conductors in the middle-upper crust are attributed to the accumulation of high-salinity fluids supplied by deeper magmas. The north-south trending small earthquakes (< M3) are mainly distributed in high-resistivity basement, independent of the volcanic plumbing system, which are attributed to small-scale rupture in higher tensile rocks. The volcanic plumbing system appears to extend below the Qiongzhou Earthquake (M7.5 in 1605), indicating the possibility of distal volcano-tectonic earthquake.

Abstract:Magma formed by partial melting of the deep-earth materials, upwelling to the surface, causes a volcanic eruption, which is one of the major ways for the earth to release its energy. Explosive eruptions can affect the local climate and environment for several months by its tephra covering the entire atmosphere, even burying a city at one moment; on the contrary, effusive eruptions may only contain lava oufflowing from its vent, during which people can observe it not far away. The energy released during one eruption depends on its eruption style, which is controlled largely by the volatile content. Volcanic eruptions may contain various eruption styles. This paper introduces the most common ones and discusses the possibility how they can transform to each other, revealing that the volatile content has played an important role on controlling the eruption styles and then offer some ways of degassing. In addition, several commonly applied methods to calculate the volatile content have been described. Among them the method which uses the clinopyroxene phenocryst to calculate the water content of the primitive magma may get generally accepted in the future.
Generation mechanism of the 26 s and 28 s tremors in the Gulf of Guinea from statistical analysis of magnitudes and event intervals

Abstract:The earth is a dynamic planet with abundant vibrating processes. Besides the earthquakes, volcanoes and other activities, there is a special type of sources called persistent localized microseismic source (PL) with long-period almost harmonic signals and fixed location. The 26 s (0.038 Hz) and 28 s (0.036 Hz) tremors in the Gulf of Guinea are two typical PL sources in the world, but their generation mechanisms are still enigmatic. Moreover, understanding behaviors of these two sources helps to reduce their interference to ambient noise tomography. We implemented an algorithm to detect events in the PL signals for the past 30 years, and then performed statistical analysis of magnitude-cumulative number (M-N) and interval time-number (T-N). We found that the magnitude distribution is similar to the Gutenberg-Richter relation (G-R relation or power law) and the distribution of interval between events is consistent with a Poisson process. We propose that the two sources are probably related to underground complex crack networks featuring fractal characteristics, and are dominantly driven by temporally random dynamic processes. However, ocean swell might affect the 26 s source occasionally while the primary microseism seems to modulate the two PL sources.

Abstract:The tsunamigenic potential of underwater volcanic eruptions is not well understood, even though eruption-generated tsunamis can be devastating. To address how erupted steam bursts from underwater volcanoes generate tsunamis, we present the experiments, using pressurized steam injected vertically into a water tank. Results over various eruption conditions identify three eruption regimes, namely, shallow-, intermediate-, and deep-water eruptions, according to the combined effects of water depths, source strengths, and source durations. The transition between shallow and intermediate eruptions is characterized by critical depths maximizing tsunami wave heights, while the transition between intermediate and deep eruptions is characterized by containment depths inhibiting surface disturbances. Water depth and source intensity are the dominant factors controlling maximum wave amplitudes, more so than aspects of jet duration and condensation. These experiments and supporting dimensional analysis improve our understanding of how underwater volcanic eruptions form tsunamis, while also providing a complete dataset for advancing tsunami generation models.

Abstract:Seismicity at active volcanoes provides crucial constraints on the dynamics of magma systems and complex fault activation processes preceding and during an eruption. We characterize time‐dependent spectral features of volcanic earthquakes at Axial Seamount with unsupervised machine learning (ML) methods, revealing mixed frequency signals that rapidly increase in number about 15 hr before eruption onset. The events migrate along pre‐existing fissures, suggesting that they represent brittle crack opening driven by influx of magma or volatiles. These results demonstrate the power of unsupervised ML algorithms to characterize subtle changes in magmatic processes associated with eruption preparation, offering new possibilities for forecasting Axial's anticipated next eruption. This analysis is generalizable and can be employed to identify similar precursory signals at other active volcanoes.

Abstract:Episodic Tremors and Slip (ETS) are highly susceptible and sensitive to external stress perturbations. The tidal and remote triggering phenomena of tremors are well-documented globally, however, the significance of the delayed triggering mechanism remains elusive. In this paper, the possibilities of the tremor modulation by the Lamb waves induced from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption (SW Pacific) on 15 January 2022 have been explored. The increasing activity of tremors after eruption has been explored at the study region of Cascadia subduction zone where such tremor do not correlate with tidal stress perturbations or remote triggering by far-off or near-by earthquakes. The increasing tremor activities are observed during the propagation of the Lamb wave cycles (L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 ) and more interestingly during inter-ETS period. From the seismic waveform analysis, we observe two coherent packets of teleseismic energy on 15 January 2022, which corresponds to arrival of surface and Lamb waves, respectively. The delayed triggering of tremors may be linked either with the teleseismic surface waves or Lamb waves from the volcanic explosion, or both. Although we cannot rule out coincidence, the delayed triggering by Lamb waves appears to be consistent with magnitude-dependent time delay and 2-D coupled pore pressure induced diffusion model.

Abstract:The source of underground nuclear explosions is usually regarded as a symmetric sphere source.However this model can not fully explain the characteristics of the seismic waves generated by the underground nuclear explosions.Through studying of theories and seismic waves generated by the underground explosions,some scholars have summarized some important assistance earthquake source mechanism models to explain the non-symmetry source,such as the wave-conversion source model,the spall model and the release of tectonic strain model.These models successfully explain some important questions,such as the mechanism of the generation of the Lg waves by underground nuclear explosions.This study presents the background and the theoretical basis of these models in detail.

Abstract:This article discusses the problem of generating internal waves during explosive eruptions of underwater volcanoes. The importance and novelty of such studies are associated with the emerging data on the observation of internal waves during a volcanic eruption in the Tonga Archipelago in 2022 reported in Zhang and Li [“Oceanic internal waves generated by the Tongan volcano eruption,” Acta Oceanol. Sin. 41(8), 1–4 (2022)]. Using Le Méhaute's parametric model originally suggested to calculate surface waves, internal waves in the ocean with a constant buoyancy frequency are calculated. Internal waves are trains of different modes, the parameters of which were found for different ratios between the radius of the equivalent source and the depth of the basin. Even at relatively small distances from the source (tens of km), wave amplitudes changeover time periods consisting of several days, which confirms the possibility of delineating the tsunami source by internal waves.

Volcanic Micro-Earthquake Classification With Spectral Manifolds in Low-Dimensional Latent Spaces

Abstract:Micro-earthquakes are frequently associated with volcanic activity and are vital indicators of volcanic processes. These minor seismic events occur within or near volcanic systems, yielding valuable insights into subsurface activities. Geologists meticulously record and analyze these events to monitor volcanoes and forecast eruptions. While recent years have seen several studies proposing automated detection and classification systems of seismic events, approaches based on Manifold Learning techniques could be beneficial in terms of information interpretability and transfer learning to other Machine Learning tasks. This paper presents a novel approach employing audio features and psychoacoustic scales to represent micro-earthquakes at Cotopaxi and Llaima Volcanoes, and these representations are then transformed into low-dimensional latent spaces. We implemented a multi-class classification system for events generated by these volcanoes, incorporating feature selection techniques based on audio-inspired features. This approach enhances the detection of volcanic phenomena triggering eruptions and improves interpretability. Our results indicated high accuracy, with rates of 94.44% for Llaima Volcano and 95.45% for Cotopaxi Volcano when utilizing mutual information to select the most relevant features. Spectral Roll-off Point and Spectral Flux dominate in classifying events for both volcanoes. These findings suggest that low-dimensional latent spaces, particularly when utilizing spectral features, can be a promising foundation for developing transfer learning schemes in general, and new multi-class classification systems in particular, for detecting volcanic micro-earthquakes.

Abstract:Abstract Volcano sector collapse and pyroclastic density currents are common phenomena on active volcanoes and potentially a fatal source of tsunami waves which constitute a serious hazard for local as well as distant coastal population. Several examples in recent history, warn us on the urgent need to improve our mitigation counter-actions when tsunamis have volcanic origin. However, instrumental record of tsunami generated by mass movement along a volcano flank are still rare and not well understood yet. Small tsunamis (≤1 m) induced by pyroclastic density currents associated to violent explosions of Stromboli volcano were recorded in near-source conditions (<1.6 km). We show how tsunami waveform remains unaltered regardless of the two orders of variability in the landslide volume and dynamics. This unprecedented record is also providing the lesson to develop unconventional warning strategies necessary when the tsunamigenic source is expected to be very close (<10 minutes) to densely populated coasts and with a limited time to issue an alert based on simulation of wave propagation and inundation.

Abstract:ABSTRACTA multidimension source model for generating broadband ground motions with deterministic 3D numerical simulations is proposed in this article. In this model, the source is composed of several superimposed layers, and the total seismic moment is assigned to these layers in different proportions. Each layer exactly fills up the seismic fault and is uniformly divided into subsources with size decreased progressively to reflect different levels of rupture details. Hence, the proposed multidimension source model may consider the realistic rupture process of an earthquake, that is, the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of source parameters, and generate broadband ground motions. To verify this source model, the 1994 Northridge earthquake is simulated with four multidimension source models, based on different source inversion results. The amplitudes, durations, and spectral characteristics of the observed ground motions of the 1994 Northridge earthquake are respectably reproduced in a range of frequencies up to 5 Hz. In addition, a scenario earthquake is also simulated with four multidimension source models, with different synthetic rupture process. The simulated ground motions of the scenario earthquake are generally in good agreement with the Next Generation Attenuation-West 2 ground-motion prediction equations. This demonstrates that it is promising to simulate realistic broadband ground motions of strong earthquakes with a proper source description and realistic Earth models.

Abstract:The application of deep‐learning‐based seismic phase pickers has surged in recent years. However, the efficacy of these models when applied to monitoring volcano seismicity has yet to be fully evaluated. Here, we first compile a data set of seismic waveforms from various volcanoes globally. We then show that the performances of two widely used deep‐learning pickers deteriorate systematically as the earthquakes' frequency content decreases. Therefore, the performances are especially poor for long‐period earthquakes often associated with fluid/magma movement. Subsequently, we train new models which perform significantly better, including when tested on two data sets where no training data were used: volcanic earthquakes along the Cascadia subduction zone and tectonic low‐frequency earthquakes along the Nankai Trough. Our model/workflow can be applied to improve monitoring of volcano seismicity globally while our compiled data set can be used to benchmark future methods for characterizing volcano seismicity, especially long‐period earthquakes which are difficult to monitor.
