Abstract:Abstract Volcano sector collapse and pyroclastic density currents are common phenomena on active volcanoes and potentially a fatal source of tsunami waves which constitute a serious hazard for local as well as distant coastal population. Several examples in recent history, warn us on the urgent need to improve our mitigation counter-actions when tsunamis have volcanic origin. However, instrumental record of tsunami generated by mass movement along a volcano flank are still rare and not well understood yet. Small tsunamis (≤1 m) induced by pyroclastic density currents associated to violent explosions of Stromboli volcano were recorded in near-source conditions (<1.6 km). We show how tsunami waveform remains unaltered regardless of the two orders of variability in the landslide volume and dynamics. This unprecedented record is also providing the lesson to develop unconventional warning strategies necessary when the tsunamigenic source is expected to be very close (<10 minutes) to densely populated coasts and with a limited time to issue an alert based on simulation of wave propagation and inundation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to explore the impacts of volcanic flank collapses and pyroclastic density currents on tsunami generation, and improve the prediction and early - warning capabilities for volcano - sourced tsunamis through measured data. Specifically: 1. **Tsunamis triggered by volcanic flank collapses and debris density currents**: - Volcanic flank collapses and pyroclastic density currents are common phenomena in active volcanoes. These events may trigger deadly tsunamis and pose a serious threat to the population in coastal areas. - Although tsunamis triggered by earthquakes account for the majority (about 80%), tsunamis caused by volcanic activities (about 10%) have caused huge destruction in certain historical events. For example, the partial collapse of Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia in 2018 triggered a tsunami as high as 10 - 30 meters, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths. 2. **Characteristics of tsunami waveforms under near - source conditions**: - The author recorded small - scale tsunamis (≤1 meter) generated during two violent eruptions of Stromboli volcano in 2019. These tsunamis were recorded at a place less than 1.6 kilometers away from the volcano. - The study found that although there are two - order - of - magnitude changes in landslide volume and dynamics, the tsunami waveform remains unchanged. This finding is of great significance for developing inshore tsunami early - warning strategies, especially when the tsunami source is very close to the densely populated coast (<10 minutes). 3. **Comparison between numerical simulation and measured data**: - The author used numerical models and measured data for comparison to verify the stability of tsunami waveforms and periods under different landslide volume and dynamic conditions. - The results show that tsunami waveforms and periods are not affected by landslide geometry, impact location and Froude number, which provides a theoretical basis for rapid assessment of tsunami risks. 4. **Tsunami characteristics under near - field conditions**: - Tsunami waveforms under near - field conditions are usually symmetrical, and the widths and amplitudes of positive and negative pulses are similar, which conforms to the characteristics of Stokes waves. - By analyzing the Froude number and relative sliding thickness of tsunami waves, the author deduced a linear relationship between tsunami height and landslide volume, which is of great value for rapid assessment of tsunami risks. ### Summary Through a detailed study of tsunamis generated during two violent eruptions of Stromboli volcano in 2019, this paper reveals the impacts of volcanic flank collapses and debris density currents on tsunami generation. The research results not only deepen the understanding of the generation mechanism of volcano - sourced tsunamis but also provide important scientific basis for developing more effective tsunami early - warning systems.
