Abstract:We detect earthquakes associated with Japan's Ontake eruptions in 2007 and 2014 using the match-and-locate method. Thirty-seven times more events (4949) than the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) catalog (133) and 30 times more events (1880) than the JMA catalog (62) are detected during the eruptions of 2007 and 2014, respectively. The detected earthquakes are further classified into three different types: long-period (LP) events, LP-associated events, and volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes. Both LP and LP-associated events are observed in the two eruptions. We suggest that the observed intense seismicity before both eruptions indicates the rewaking of Ontake volcano and might be used to predict its impending eruption in the long term. The temporal persistence and spatial concentration of LP and LP-associated events may be used to predict the eventual eruption and eruption location, and the maximum magnitude of the LP events may be used as an indicator of eruption magnitude.

Abstract:Volcanic activity generally causes crustal deformation, which sometimes induces groundwater changes, and both of these phenomena are sometimes detected before volcanic eruptions. Therefore, investigations of crustal deformation and groundwater changes can be useful for predicting volcanic eruptions. The Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, has been observing groundwater pressure at Ohtaki observatory (GOT) since 1998. GOT is about 10 km southeast of the summit of Mt. Ontake. During this observation period, Mt. Ontake has erupted twice, in 2007 and in 2014. Before the 2007 eruption, the groundwater pressure at GOT clearly dropped, but it did not change before or after the 2014 eruption. These observations are consistent with the crustal deformation observed by Global Navigation Satellite System stations of the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. The difference between the 2007 and 2014 eruptions can be explained if a relatively large magma intrusion occurred before the 2007 eruption but no or a small magma intrusion before the 2014 eruption.

Abstract:Seismicity at active volcanoes provides crucial constraints on the dynamics of magma systems and complex fault activation processes preceding and during an eruption. We characterize time‐dependent spectral features of volcanic earthquakes at Axial Seamount with unsupervised machine learning (ML) methods, revealing mixed frequency signals that rapidly increase in number about 15 hr before eruption onset. The events migrate along pre‐existing fissures, suggesting that they represent brittle crack opening driven by influx of magma or volatiles. These results demonstrate the power of unsupervised ML algorithms to characterize subtle changes in magmatic processes associated with eruption preparation, offering new possibilities for forecasting Axial's anticipated next eruption. This analysis is generalizable and can be employed to identify similar precursory signals at other active volcanoes.

Abstract:The violent eruption of the Hunga (Tonga) submarine volcano on 15 January 2022 caused a 58 km‐heigh ash plume, catastrophic tsunami, and significant global seismic and infrasound waves. However, the physical mechanism underpinning its multiple‐explosive events remains unclear, and its resolvability relies on the seismic waveform source inversion. The studies of two different point‐source models, the seismic moment tensor (MT) and the single force (SF), have been performed separately for this eruption, which, interestingly, can explain the seismic data adequately. Here, we use a joint inversion of MT and SF to unravel a composite source of an explosion‐like MT and a significant upward force for the first major explosive event. Regarding the direction and magnitude, we propose that the upward force is likely a rebound force in response to the pressure drop on the seafloor because the water body above the volcano was abruptly uplifted by the shallow underwater explosion.

Abstract:SUMMARY Magnetotelluric data from Mount Tongariro have been analysed using an unstructured tetrahedral finite-element inversion code that incorporates topography, which was not included in previous analysis of these data. Incorporating topography adds information, which stabilizes the resistivity inversion modelling, and for the first time allows details of the shallow hydrothermal system and its relationship with the underlying magmatic system to be resolved. Specifically, an electrically conductive zone between 4 and 12.5 km depth marks the underlying magmatic system, which is shown to directly connect via conductive pathways to the area where the most recent phreatic eruptions at Tongariro occurred in 2012. The resultant phreatic eruptions in 2012 August and November showed no new magmatic component to the eruption deposits. Nevertheless, by combining the magnetotelluric resistivity image with relocated seismicity, we can see that seismicity (a proxy for magma ascent) migrated from the top of the magmatic system into the hydrothermal system in the months preceding these eruptions. Magmatic interaction with the extant hydrothermal system likely caused the over pressurization for the phreatic eruption. This work highlights the utility of combining geophysical methods and petrological data to constrain phreatic eruption processes.

Search for Reliable Precursors: A Case Study of the Seismic Quiescence of the 2000 Western Tottori Prefecture Earthquake

Abstract:How to search for reliable precursors is one of the key problems of the study on earthquake forecast. In this paper a method is presented to judge whether or not a precursor is reliable. Before a potential anomaly can be nominated as a reliable precursor, it should pass or be proved by the following tests or analyses: whether or not it is an artificial anomaly, whether or not it correlates with an investigated event, whether or not it is a random anomaly. As a case study, I have investigated the reliability of seismic quiescence for an M = 7.3 earthquake, which occurred in the western region of Tottori prefecture, Japan, on 6 October 2000. The earthquake data (1975–2000) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) were used in this study. After analyzing the completeness of the catalog and removing aftershocks, a statistical method, which is called the RTL (region‐time‐length) algorithm and takes into account the information of magnitude, occurrence time and location of earthquakes, was applied to the above preprocessed earthquake data. A clear seismic quiescence anomaly was detected before the 2000 western Tottori prefecture earthquake. Close investigation indicated that the above anomaly is not due to artifacts of the selections of model parameters. After quantifying the anomaly and making statistical analysis over the whole investigated spatiotemporal domain, reasonable correlation between the above anomaly and the main shock in 2000 was recognized. The stochastic test using synthetic randomized catalogs showed the above anomaly is unlikely due to chance. Thus the above seismic quiescence anomaly before the 2000 main shock should be a significant and reliable precursor and the research method revealed in this study can enhance the reliability of precursors.
Time‐Resolved Trigger Processes Leading to the Plinian Eruptions at Sakurajima Volcano, Japan

Abstract:Abstract Mafic magma recharge of crustal reservoirs and subsequent magma mixing has been considered a direct trigger of volcanic eruptions. However, although recharge frequently occurs in many active volcanoes, it rarely leads to an eruption immediately, making its role as a trigger ambiguous. Sakurajima volcano, Japan, has vigorously erupted three times since the 15th century following a common process; mixed magmas after recharge were once stored in a shallow, thick conduit before each eruption (conduit pre‐charge). We reconstructed the magma migration with a high time resolution by diffusion modeling on orthopyroxene and magnetite. Orthopyroxene phenocrysts recorded prolonged diffusive re‐equilibration timescales of years or more after recharge‐and‐mixing. Magnetite, which has the fastest elemental diffusivity among the phenocrysts examined, predominantly lacks zoning. This demonstrates that the mineral phase was re‐equilibrated with surrounding magma and homogenized via elemental diffusion after the final magmatic perturbation, implying the final repose of the shallow pre‐charged magma body for more than several tens of days. After this shallow stagnation period, the Plinian magmas began to ascend and reached the surface within 55 hr. Mass balance calculations show that crystallization‐driven vesiculation upon pre‐charge can produce overpressure sufficient to cause an eruption. The Sakurajima cases demonstrate the hierarchical timescales of trigger processes leading to the explosive eruptions.

Abstract:Infrasonic and seismic tremor are signals released by active volcanoes. These signals play a crucial role in monitoring volcanic activity and providing insights into volcanic dynamics and hazards. Between December 2020 and February 2022, Mount Etna was characterized by an intense eruptive period, during which monitoring efforts were employed to investigate the characteristics and source signals. Our work focuses on analyzing volcanic tremors in both seismic and infrasound signals to understand their behavior and relationship with the volcano’s dynamics. In particular, the interval 14‐21 February 2021, comprising 4 lava fountain episodes, was taken into account. Concerning the data analysis, amplitude, spectral content, seismic volcanic tremor and infrasonic explosion‐quakes source locations have been computed. The results reveal that the seismic amplitude is closely related to emitted magma volume during the lava fountains. The study finds that most of the energy in volcanic tremors is concentrated below 5.0 Hz. During eruptive episodes, both seismic and infrasound signals exhibit lower frequencies, with variations between different stations due to propagation effects. Finally, two different source mechanisms of the seismic tremor were suggested: i) flow of gasses through a shallower permeable solid layer is likely to be responsible for the generation of volcanic tremor during non‐eruptive periods; ii) magmatic flows along the shallow plumbing system and the consequent impact of particles on the walls of the conduit during eruptive periods.

Quantitative Assessment of Temporal Changes in Subaqueous Hydrothermal Activity in Active Crater Lakes During Unrest Based on a Time-Series of Lake Water Chemistry

Abstract:Regular sampling of lake water has been performed at many volcanoes to assess the state of volcanic activity. However, it is not clear whether the absolute concentrations or, instead, rate of changes in concentrations are more suitable for such assessments. In this study, we show that temporal changes in concentrations of an element in lake water are described by a simple differential equation, assuming changes in lake volume and chemical processes are negligible. The time constants (63% response time for changes in the chemical concentration in lake water) have a wide range varying between 20 and 1,000 days for the studied volcanoes in Japan, meaning it takes a long time to assess volcanic activity based on the absolute concentration of an element. In order to assess the volcanic activity in a shorter time period, based on a time-series of lake element concentration data, we developed a numerical model to calculate temporal changes in the steady-state concentration, which is proportional to the elemental concentrations of the bulk hydrothermal fluid injected from subaqueous fumaroles and hot springs. We applied our method to Yugama crater lake at Kusatsu–Shirane volcano, Japan, and quantitatively evaluated temporal changes in the hydrothermal input from 1964 to 2020. As a result, we detected changes in the Cl concentrations of the bulk hydrothermal input that were associated with unrest including the phreatic eruption in 1976 and earthquake swarms in 1989–1992 and 2014–2020. The future concentration in the lake water can be predicted from the most recent steady-state concentrations. Comparing the predicted concentration curve with the concentration obtained from lake water samples, it is possible to quickly assess whether the concentration of the bulk hydrothermal input has increased/decreased or remained constant.

Abstract:The time series of PALSAR-2 and Sentinel-1 images reveal inflation at the volcanic flank and contraction at the crater for approximately 5 months before the 2017 eruption of Shinmoe-dake volcano, Japan. While the observation of inflation at the volcano's flank is ubiquitous, few studies have reported crater contraction preceding an eruption. The flank inflation stopped after the 2017 eruption, while the contraction at the crater continued until the 2018 eruption. We found that a pipe-shaped deformation source above sea level best fits the observation preceding the 2017 eruption. Suppose the flux of ejected materials constrains the conduit radius during the previous 2011 eruption. In that case, the amount of deformation of the pipe-shaped deformation source, whether open or closed at its top, is too large to be realistic. Although constraining the conduit radius from the eruption flux overestimates the pressure change of the pipe-shaped deformation source, water-saturated fractures along the volcanic conduit could extend the effective conduit radius of the pressure source. We propose one potential scenario for the mechanism of the crater contraction preceding volcanic eruptions based on the combination of compaction due to cooling by ambient groundwater and material withdrawal within the conduit. The groundwater inflows from the ambient aquifer through cracks in the porous conduit wall, which are generated by conduit expansion during the magma ascent. Decoupling from the conduit wall due to a decrease in volume of the material promotes material instability and crater contraction. The interaction between the groundwater and the magma triggers the 2017 eruption of Shinmoe-dake volcano, as previous studies have reported.

Regional Seismic Information Entropy for Detecting Precursors of Earthquake Activation

Abstract:Here a method is presented for detecting precursors of earthquakes from time series data on earthquakes in a target region. Regional Entropy of Seismic Information, a quantity representing the average influence of an earthquake in the target region to the diversity of clusters to which earthquakes distribute, is introduced. Based on a rough qualitative model of the dynamics of land crust, it is hypothesized that the saturation after the increase in the Regional Entropy of Seismic Information precedes the activation of earthquakes. On the open earthquake catalog, this hypothesis is validated. This temporal change turned out to correlate more with the activation of earthquakes in Japanese regions, by one to two years precedence, than the compared baseline methods.

Abstract:Geysers are episodic features with variable eruption intervals that range from minutes to years. Although many previous studies on geysers have focused on subsurface properties and processes such as plumbing geometry and recharge process, it is known that erupting fluid column exhibits short-term behaviors such as individual water jets from the vent. In the present study, we conducted observations at Onikobe geyser, NE Japan, a relatively small geyser (geysering well) erupting water up to ~6–8 m every ~10 min and observed the erupting fluid column using a thermal infrared camera and an acoustic sensor. We succeed in tracking the water jets by analyzing spatio-temporal distributions of the temperatures detected by the thermal infrared video, which clearly shows the eruptions at Onikobe geyser are not completely stationary but rather a series of intermittent jets with a short period interval of <1 s. We estimate the exit velocity by fitting a ballistic model under the air drag condition of inertial resistance to the jet trajectory. The exit velocity and the averaged gas volume fraction of the erupting fluid are estimated to be ~4–79 m/s and ~ 0.93–0.96, respectively. The exit velocity is ~30 m/s during the first bursts, then it rapidly increases to ~50–80 m/s for ~15 s, and then decreases to ~20–30 m/s until ~10 s before the eruption ends. Time series analyses of the thermal and acoustic records during an eruption indicate harmonic spectra with integer multiple peaks. The fundamental frequency showing ~4 Hz at the beginning gradually decreases to ~2 Hz for ~15 s, keeps almost constant in the following 30 s, and then slightly increases near the end of the eruption. These harmonic spectra may be caused by a resonance mechanism, non-linear fluid motion, and/or subsurface two-phase flow. We discuss the case of a closed organ-pipe resonance in a subsurface crack and attribute the frequency decrease to a decrease in the water level in the conduit (an increase in the length of the resonating liquid-vapor column) and/or a decrease in the gas volume fraction of the liquid-vapor mixture in the conduit. Since such harmonic characteristics are observed at other geysers, further simultaneous observation of the short-period oscillations on the jet column proposed in this study with seismic observations of harmonic tremor may provide an improved understanding of geyser subsurface phenomena.

From sink to volcanic source: Unravelling missing terrestrial eruption records by characterization and high‐resolution chronology of lacustrine volcanic density flow deposits, Lake Inawashiro‐ko, Fukushima, Japan

Abstract:Eruption records in the terrestrial stratigraphy are often incomplete due to erosion after tephra deposition, limited exposure and lack of precise dating owing to discontinuity of strata. A lake system and sequence adjacent to active volcanoes can record various volcanic events such as explosive eruptions and subaqueous density flows being extensions of eruption triggered and secondary triggered lahars. A lacustrine environment can constrain precise ages of such events because of constant and continuous background sedimentation. A total of 71 subaqueous density flow deposits in a 28 m long core from Lake Inawashiro‐ko reveals missing terrestrial volcanic activity at Adatara and Bandai volcanoes during the past 50,000 years. Sedimentary facies, colour, grain size, petrography, clay mineralogy, micro X‐ray fluorescence analysis and chemistry of included glass shards characterize the flow event deposits and clarify their origin: (i) clay‐rich grey hyperpycnites, extended from subaerial cohesive lahars at Adatara volcano, with sulphide/sulphate minerals and high sulphur content which point to a source from hydrothermally altered material ejected by phreatic eruptions; and (ii) clay‐rich brown density flow deposits, induced by magmatic hydrothermal eruptions and associated edifice collapse at Bandai volcano, with the common presence of fresh juvenile glass shards and low‐grade hydrothermally altered minerals; whereas (iii) non‐volcanic turbidites are limited to the oldest large slope‐failure and the 2011 Tohoku‐oki earthquake events. The high‐resolution chronology of volcanic activity during the last 50,000 years expressed by lacustrine event deposits shows that phreatic eruption frequency at Adatara has roughly tripled and explosive eruptions at Bandai have increased by ca 50%. These results challenge hikers, ski‐fields and downstream communities to re‐evaluate the increased volcanic risks from more frequent eruptions and far‐reaching lahars, and demonstrate the utility of lahar and lacustrine volcanic density flow deposits to unravel missing terrestrial eruption records, otherwise the recurrence rate may be underestimated at many volcanoes.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Long-period (LP), hybrid and volcano-tectonic (VT) seismicity are important indicators for tracking the evolution of volcanic processes. Here, we propose an unsupervised learning method to classify 5,949 seismic events in Kilauea volcano, Hawai'i, during a 4-month period before the collapse of Pu'u' O'o on 30 April, 2018. The LPs and hybrids exhibit three major episodes, which progressively intensified and had increasing shallow events towards the eruption. The most intense episode starting three weeks before eruption coincides with changes in near-caldera deformation and lava lake elevation in Halema'uma'u, serving as possible immediate precursors. However, the first two episodes imply magma migration was already active months prior to the eruption. The spatiotemporal patterns of abundant hybrids reveal that they are associated with magma movement but mixed with shear-failure or near-surface resonance. Our results provide useful constraints on the magmatic processes in the preparation phase of the Kilauea eruption in 2018.

Seismicity prior to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes

Abstract:We report precursory seismic patterns prior to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, as measured by four different methods based on changes in seismicity that can be used for earthquake forecasting: the b-value method, two methods of seismic quiescence evaluation, and an analysis of seismicity density in space and time. The spatial extent of precursory patterns differs from one method to the other and ranges from local scales (typically, asperity size) to regional scales (e.g., 2 degree x 3 degree around the source zone). The earthquakes were preceded by periods of pronounced anomalies, which lasted in yearly scales (1.5 years), or longer (> 3 years). We demonstrate that a combination of multiple methods detected different signals prior to the Kumamoto earthquakes. This indicates great potential to reduce the hazard at possible future sites of earthquakes relative to long-term seismic hazard assessment. We also found that the seismic quiescence in a regional scale area, detected by using the two methods of seismic quiescence evaluation, was a common precursor to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes and 2015 Off Satsuma Peninsula earthquake. The result allows us to interpret both events as the onset that occurred at a section along the tectonic line from the Okinawa Trough through the Beppu-Shimabara graben.

Abstract:The 15 January 2022, eruption at Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) volcano started shortly after 4:00UTC. There had been noted unconfirmed precursory events. We analyzed seismometer data recorded in Fiji and Futuna, the closest stations operated during the eruption and located over 750 km away. We extracted Rayleigh waves and estimated their powers and source directions, assuming retrograde particle motions. We found a Rayleigh wave from the HTHH's direction about 15 min before the eruption onset. The arrival time difference of the Rayleigh wave between the two stations was consistent with that of the M5.8 earthquake during the eruption located beneath the HTHH. Referring to other seismic signals and satellite images, we concluded that the Rayleigh wave was the most significant eruption precursor with no apparent surface activity. Including our findings and results of previous studies, we propose a scenario of the beginning of the caldera‐forming eruption.

Abstract:We propose a new method for real-time uncertainty monitoring of earthquake and volcano source models using data from the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and explore its application concerning observation station placement. The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan operates two main types of GNSS earth observation network system (GEONET) coordinates for crustal deformation monitoring on different time scales: post-processing analysis values and real-time GEONET analysis system for rapid deformation monitoring (REGARD). REGARD uses the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method termed real-time automatic uncertainty estimation of a coseismic single rectangular model using GNSS data (RUNE) for single rectangular fault model estimation to handle uncertainty. Thus far, no GNSS monitoring system can automatically detect transient crustal deformation events, such as volcanic activity and earthquake swarms, on timescales of a day or less. We extended RUNE and developed a core program for a new monitoring system for earthquake and volcanic source models and their uncertainties. Our program achieved automatic and stable MCMC utilization for rectangular fault, dike, Mogi, and spheroid models by increasing the computational speed, improving search efficiency, and adjusting hyperparameters. The program automatically determines the standard deviation of the likelihood function assuming a normal distribution with weights for each observation station. The calculation time was within 15 s for 1 × 10 6 samples on a standard 1U server. We assessed the reliability of the developed method using synthetic and observed GNSS data from the 2015 Sakurajima volcanic event. The results were consistent with the assumed model and previous studies and indicated an advantage in automatically quantifying uncertainty in a short computation time. Based on MCMC samples, we developed a new visualization algorithm to indicate areas on a map in which the number of observation stations should be expanded. We assessed the reliability using data from the 2023 Noto Peninsula earthquake [M j 6.5]. The results indicate that the algorithm is helpful in studying the placement of stations. The above model extensions and their application are essential to achieve a rapid quantitative understanding of disaster events near urban areas and for utilizing this information in emergency response activities.

Hidden earthquakes unveil the dynamic evolution of a large-scale explosive eruption

Abstract:<p>Volcanic eruptions progress by co-evolving the fluid and solid systems. The fluid mechanics can be observed through the evolution of plumes and ejecta. How does the solid evolve? When does the conduit open? When does it close? Seismology can potentially tell us about these processes by measuring the failure of the solid rock. However, such inferences require detection of earthquakes during an explosive eruption. Standard earthquake detection methods often fail during this time as the eruption itself produces seismic noise that obscures the earthquakes. In this work, we address this problem by applying both a supervised and unsupervised search techniques to the existing catalog of the 2008 Okmok Caldera eruption to find brittle failure signals during the continuous eruptive sequence. We were able to detect >4500 new earthquakes using the 419 events previously located by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). A spatiotemporal analysis of the occurrence of earthquakes during the eruption reveal interesting observations: Seismic bursts during the eruption are not synchronized with the exhalation of large ash and steam plumes, suggesting that the dynamics of the eruption are controlled by a clog-and-crack mechanism; most of the Caldera co-eruptive seismicity that is not located at the focus of the eruption occurs under the intra-Caldera cones, showing the activation of their hydrological system due to a system-wide pressurization; the end of the eruption is marked by a large burst of small, deep earthquakes trending SW-NE, possibly related to a propagating lateral dike similar to those observed in other basaltic calderas; the magnitude distribution of seismicity through time shows that the largest earthquakes in the bursts do not happen at the beginning of the sequence like in typical mainshock-aftershock sequences. Furthermore, high precision earthquake relocations highlight a ring-fault structure inside of Okmok Caldera which is thought to be acting as the pathway for fluids to the surface.</p>
Vulcanian eruptions at Sakurajima Volcano: geophysical data, numerical modelling, and petrological evidence

Abstract:We investigated the magma conduit system beneath three active craters that have repeatedly generated Vulcanian eruptions at Sakurajima Volcano, Japan, by analysing seismic, infrasound, and tilt data. The hypocentres of the earthquakes associated with the Vulcanian eruptions are distributed separately at shallow depths of approximately 0.5 km beneath the craters. Infrasound indicated that the swelling of the crater floor starts approximately 0.2 s after the occurrence of earthquakes and that the eruption starts about 0.3 to 0.5 s later. During an eruption, tilt vectors at a station approximately 2.7 km far from the active craters indicated a deflationary trend directed toward one of the three active craters. A 1-D conduit flow simulation indicated pressure build-up at a depth of 0.4–1.0 km beneath the crater, consistent with previously reported pressure sources during eruptions detected by geodesy. Volcanic lapilli emitted from the three craters have the same chemical composition; hence, Vulcanian eruptions of all three studied craters originate from a common magma source.

Abstract:The eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano, Indonesia, on 22 December 2018 induced a destructive tsunami (the Sunda Strait tsunami), which was recorded by four nearby tidal gauges. In this study we invert the tsunami records and recover the tsunami generation process. Two tsunami sources are obtained, a static one of instant initial water elevation and a time-dependent one accounting for the continuous evolution of water height. The time-dependent results are found to reproduce the tsunami recordings more satisfactorily. The complete tsunami generation process lasts approximately 9 min and features a two-stage evolution with similar intensity. Each stage lasts about 3.5 min and elevates a water volume of about 0.13 km(3). The time, duration and volume of the volcano eruption in general agree with seismic records and geomorphological interpretations. We also test different sizes of the potential source region, which lead to different maximum wave height in the source area, but all the results of time-dependent tsunami sources show the robust feature of two stages of wave generation. Our results imply a time-dependent and complex process of tsunami generation during the volcano eruption.
