Abstract:We optimize the novel configuration of a hybrid fiber amplifier - Raman assisted-fiber-based optical parametric amplifier (R-FOPA),in which the parametric gain and Raman gain profiles are combined to achieve a flat composite gain profile. The pump powers and the fiber length in the hybrid amplifier are effectively optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) scheme. The optimization results indicate that the R-FOPA can achieve a 200-nm flat bandwidth spectrum with the gain of 20 dB and ripple of less than 4 dB.

Transmission Performance Analysis of Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers for Wdm System

Abstract:A numerical analysis is presented on the long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system employing fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) cascades based on one-pump FOPA model with Raman Effect taken into account. The end-to-end equalization scheme is applied to optimize the system features in terms of proper output powers and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in all the channels. The numerical results show that—through adjusting the fiber spans along with the number of FOPAs as well as the channel powers at the terminals in a prescribed way—the transmission distance and system performance can be optimized. By comparing the results generated by different lengths of fiber span, we come to the optimal span length to achieve the best transmission performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison among the long-haul WDM transmission systems employing different inline amplifiers, namely, FOPA, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Fiber Raman Amplifier (FRA). FOPA demonstrates its advantage over the other two in terms of system features.

Abstract:We designed a multidefect nonlinear superstructure fiber (SF) to serve as the gain medium of optical parametric amplification. In both theoretical derivation and simulation results, the signal amplification proved to achieve enhancement at certain frequencies where the local field intensities were increased or the slow group velocities of the modes were greatly slowed down on the band edges to offset the negative effect raised by large wave vector mismatching.

Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated a novel signal-pump double-pass distributed Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) by using a three-port optical circulator as a reflective mirror. This unique RFA architecture not only doubles the amount of dispersion compensation, but also enhances the pumping efficiency. In comparison with the conventional signal-pump single-pass scheme, the proposed RFA has a 2.0-dB gain improvement and a 3.7-dB equivalent noise figure suppression, measured at 1598 nm. The proposed RFA may find wide applications in long-haul transmission and optical networks, where dispersion compensation is of great concern. Abstract:A broadband two-pump optical parametric amplifier with ultra-flat gain spectra is proposed in a single-section highly nonlinear fiber. By elaborately setting the dispersions and pump wavelength space, a gain over 250nm with 0.02-dB uniformity is obtained. The pump polarizations and fiber length can be changed, achieving polarization-insensitive or higher gain, while the flatness and bandwidth of gain curve remain the same.

Abstract:The performance of bi-directionally pumped Raman amplifiers based on single fiber and dispersion-managed fibers (SF-RA/DMF-RA) is analyzed and compared through the ratio of SNR (R SNR ) of RA to EDFA transmission lines. The results show that for different span length (80∼120km), optimal forward pumping ratio keeps unchanged, but optimal net gain increases for longer spans. The higher R SNR and insensitivity of OSNR to some random parameters make DMF-RA valuable and practical for terrestrial long span transmission systems.

Abstract:The key remaining technological challenge to the realization of further power scaling for high-power fiber laser systems is overcoming the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect. In past years, chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings (CTFBGs) have been demonstrated to be a simple and effective way to suppress SRS in high-power fiber amplifiers. However, the weak reflection at the Bragg wavelength could be strongly amplified, which not only limits the power and efficiency but also degrades the beam quality. We report here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the influence of the residual Bragg reflection of CTFBGs on SRS suppression in high-power fiber laser systems. Two groups of CTFBGs with different Bragg reflection wavelengths are fabricated and used for the comparison experiments. Test results show that the CTFBGs of longer Bragg wavelengths have a better suppression effect, in particular, at a higher power level. By further moving the Bragg wavelength of a CTFBG out of the Raman gain spectral range, a better suppression effect and a promotion in laser efficiency could be achieved, which is very useful for further power scaling.

Abstract:By using the coupled steady-state equations, we have numerically studied the characteristics optimization of Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) in a signal/pump double-passes-the-gain-medium scheme. The simulation results are in very good agreement with those of experimental data. Given a constant pumping power, the length of dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) in a RFA could be determined. The optimum design shows that the best length of the DCF is at around 3.8±0.2km in our study. This could provide both the highest signal output power and the lowest noise figure among all conditions we choose.

Abstract:We report a microstructure-fibre-based parametric amplification experiment in telecom band with ultra-high gain slope. A peak on-off gain of 52.3 dB is achieved using 25 m high nonlinear microstructure fibre (MF) and only 5.3 W pump power. The parametric gain slope is up to 580 dBW−1km−1. From the experimental data, the linear coefficient of the MF is estimated to be about 66.7 W−1km−1. The experiment shows the great potential of MFs in practical fibre parametric amplifiers.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel signal/pump double-pass Raman fiber amplifier using fiber Brag gratings (FBGs). In order to compensate the dispersion slop mismatch among channels in lightwave system, FBGs embedded in different positions along dispersion compensated fiber are used to control the travel length of each WDM signal. Gain equalization can be achieved by optimizing the reflectivity of each FBG. Maximum output power variation among channels is less than +/- 0.5 dB after appropriate optimization. Finally, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system using 40-Gb/s x 8 ch non return-to-zero (NRZ) signal transmission in a 100-km transmission fiber is simulated to confirm the system performance. Using proposed dispersion compensation method, it may lead to 2 dB improvement in Q value. Such kind of RFA may find vast applications in WDM system where dispersion management is a crucial issue. Abstract:A simple method is provided for the performance comparison of the Raman-amplified optical-fiber transmission systems. The results show that, compared with conventional hybrid-Raman-amplification systems, the maximum transmission distance can be increased by about 10% and 30% separately, and the input signal power can be decreased by about 6 dB for bidirectional-pumping all-Raman-amplification systems based on uniform or dispersion-managed transmission fibers.

Abstract:An approach to improve the pump-to-signal transfer efficiency of the fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with the Bragg wavelength at 1550.1nm is introduced between two high nonlinear fibers (HNLFs) to reduce the first-order idler wave, which lead to the alteration of the relative power and relationships between the involved waves. And the output power of the signal is approximately 10dB increased compared with the absence of the FBG.

Abstract:The generation of unwanted higher-order Raman effects is the main factor restricting the power scaling of Raman fiber amplifiers (RFAs). This phenomenon arises from an interplay of physical processes, including stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), four-wave mixing (FWM), and the intricate temporal and spectral dynamics. Tapered fibers have demonstrated excellent nonlinear effects suppression characteristics due to the varying core diameter along the fiber, which is widely used in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers. In this paper, a comprehensive numerical investigation is conducted on the core-pumping tapered fiber RFAs considering Raman-assisted FWM. The higher-order Raman power in the tapered fiber is always kept at a low level, showing a weak Raman-assisted FWM effect. A numerical investigation is conducted to study the impact of the tapering ratio, the lengths of the thin part, tapered region, and thick part on the higher-order Raman threshold of RFAs. Furthermore, the impact of phase mismatch variations caused by changes in the seed wavelength, on the output signal power and nonlinear effects is analyzed. This paper presents, for the first time, a study on core-pumped RFAs using tapered fibers, providing a novel perspective on enhancing the power of RFAs.

Abstract:Suppression of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is an important technology for realization of fiber parametric amplification. Phase modulation is employed in the early literatures to meet this purpose. A new method is proposed that a secondly phase modulation is applied on a modulated optical source. Based on this technique, by adding a 365 MHz phase modulation to the 2 GHz phase modulated laser source, the stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold is improved from 10 dBm to 23.5 dBm. Continuous wave (CW) pump optical parametric amplification is demonstrated experimentally in a 1450 m-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF), with the nonlinear coefficient γ=11.9 W -1km -1, dispersion slope S=0.0155 ps/(nm2·km). Using an external cavity laser (ECL) as the signal, 26 nm bandwidth (gain10 dB) and 24 dB maximum gain for small signal are obtained.

Abstract:We report, for the first time to our knowledge, an optically powered wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) communication system with distributed parametric amplification in the dispersion-shifted fiber. The parametric pump for the amplification of WDM signals also acts as the power supply for the receiver component. The proposed scheme is also a potential candidate for the "last mile" transmission. Successful musical signal transmission has been demonstrated. Additionally, four channels of 10-Gb/s WDM signals are used to get more precise performance evaluation of the system. The power penalties of less than or equal to 1.35 dB at a bit-error rate of 10(-9) are achieved for all WDM channels in the presence of 10-dB parametric gain.

Abstract:An efficient optimal algorithm, named SAA-PA in brief, based on the simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) and the Powell algorithm (PA) for the PCF-based Raman amplifiers (PCF-RA) design has been applied for the first time, in order to achieve the flat Raman gain characteristics. The pump spectra (wavelengths and powers) have been optimized to achieve low gain ripple (GR) over C+L band. The PCF considered to study the RA has the following parameters: Lambda=4 mu m, d/Lambda=0.625, Sixty signals (1540-1600 nm) spaced at 1 nm are launched to the PCF of 10-km length with an input power of -10 dBm/ch. Various pump wavelengths and power distributions have been considered with the aim to reduce the gain ripple as much as possible. Simulation results show that the lowest GR of 0.72 dB with a peak gain of 8.03 dB in an 10 km ULL-PCF can be attained over C+L band. Also, it has been easily found that, when the gain and bandwidth are approximately the same, the lowest GR decreases with the addition of pump number, i.e., the GR are 1.27, 1.11, 0.85, and 0.72 dB for 3, 4, 5, and 6 backward pumps, respectively. All this shows that PCF is an appropriate candidate for high gain Raman amplifier.

Abstract:Kilowatt-level high efficiency all-fiberized Raman fiber amplifier based on pure passive fiber is proposed for the first time in this paper. The laser system is established on master oscillator power amplification configuration while a piece of graded-index passive fiber is utilized as stokes shifting as well as gain medium, which is entirely irrelevant to rare-earth-doped gain mechanism. When the pump power is 1368.8 W, we obtained 1002.3 W continuous-wave laser power at 1060 nm with the corresponding optical-to-optical efficiency of 84%. The beam parameter M2 improves from 9.17 of the pump laser to 5.11 of the signal laser through the amplification process, and the brightness enhancement is about 2.57 at maximum output power as a consequence of the beam clean-up process in the graded-index fiber. To the best of our knowledge, we have demonstrated the first kilowatt-level high efficiency Raman fiber amplifier based on pure passive fiber with brightness enhancement.
