Compare the difference between the filter paper and absorbent paper points in collecting GCF

Abstract:Objective To compare the difference of absorbent paper points and whatman 3# strip filter paper in collecting GCF and aim of selecting the suitable sampling material.Methods Absorbent paper points were used as experimental group and whatman 3# strip filter paper as control group. The papers were cut into 10×2mm rectangle manually. In vitro study. The serum was added onto the two materials with incremental volume. The procedure was repeated four times with the same volume. The relationship between the weight and volume, as well as the difference among recovery rates of four components in the elution were analyzed. In vivo study, GCF samples from periodontal patients were collected with 3 days interval by using the two materials respectively. The weight and volume of the samples were calculated and contents of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the interleukin-1β(IL-1β) in the elution were compared.Results In vitro study, no statistically significant difference (P〉0.05) was shown between the two groups in the recovery rates of the four components. In vivo study, no statistically significant difference (P〉0.05) was shown between two groups in GCF weight and contents of IL-6 and IL-1β in the elution. High correlation (r=0.959) was found between two groups in GCF weight.Conclusion The paper points can be applied as an easy and accurate sampling method which may be a substitute for whatman filter paper in clinical GCF collection.
